lifestyle

Andy Warhol’s personal life has always been much a debate. He was believed to be homosexual as his art often portrayed homoerotic imagery and motifs. Warhol claimed to be a virgin for his entire life. Warhol’s life and work both mocked and celebrated materiality and celebrity. Warhol produced work that can be viewed in two types of way. One, being that alot of his paintings were distorted brand images and celebrity portraits that critiqued a culture obsessed with money and fame. Two, Warhols work can be considered a celebration on consumer goods and the american culture. Andy’s life philosophy, “making money is art and working is art, and good business is the best art.” Robert Mapplethorpe was an American photographer that was known for superb contrast in black in white photography. Mapplethorpe was also to be considered as an gay artist that produced many homoerotic works. Mapplethorpe had two extreme type of styles. The first style was very tasteful and clean that would come out very soft and elegant. The second style came to be more raw and disturbing which actually became controversial in the late 1960’s. This style of photography actually led to the national debate over public funding for artwork.

technical process

Warhol was famous for his screen prints but also used other mediums such as sculpture, photography, videography, drawing, and painting. With silk screen printing Warhol focused alot on production and celebrated repitition. Mapplethorpe shot with multiple types of cameras such as the Polaroid SX-70, and he also shot with a Hasselblad medium-format camera. He would also experiment with a large-format press camera. Other processes that he’d dabble in is combining photographic images printed on linen, and designing his own wooden frames.
