SAFETY
RIP CURRENTS
Rip currents can be hazardous to even the strongest swimmers who are caught in a rip and who do not understand what is going on, and who may not have the necessary water skills, may panic, or exhaust themselves by trying to swim directly against the flow of water. If caught in a rip current, DO NOT PANIC! To escape a rip current – swim parallel to the shore, do not try to swim against the current. If the current is too strong, let it carry you farther away from shore. It will eventually weaken. Then swim back to shore at an angle away from the current.
BEACH WARNING FLAGS
DOUBLE RED: Water Closed
RED: High hazard, high surf and/or strong currents
YELLOW: Medium hazard, moderate surf and/or currents
GREEN: Low hazard, calm conditions, exercise caution
PURPLE: Dangerous marine life

the embodiment of his musical influences.
The Modern Eldorados The Modern Eldorados were formed in 1996 as a vehicle for singer/songwriter Gretsch Lyle’s original brand of classic country music. Raised in a family of musicians, Lyles was heavily influenced by his grandparent’s generation of country greats. Growing up in rural Baldwin County, Alabama he began singing and playing guitar by the age of six and wrote his first song at sixteen. From a very early age he felt the calling to follow in the footsteps of his heroes Marty Robbins, Hank Williams and Johnny Cash. In both sound and style, Gretsch Lyles is
Gretsch and his band, The Modern Eldorados have evolved a sound that taps deep into the roots of traditional country, western swing and the rockabilly style. His songs are said to read like a roadmap tracing the roots of American music. The band has also been described as a “cultural asset and a Mobile music treasure”. The band’s CD “The Rockmart Demos” have been gaining airplay on alt country and Americana stations in the U.S. and Europe. Titles such as “Let’s Have A Rendezvous”, “Tennessee Tonight” and “Coming Back Home To You” bear witness to Gretsch’s versatile singing and song writing. Gretsch’s charismatic persona has even served as inspiration for other artists. “Gretsch and the ‘Ol Silverados” is a single released from New Orleans based rock and roll band, Sweet Pea’s Revenge. Gretsch Lyles and The Modern Eldorados have spent the past fourteen years traveling America’s highways and building a vast fan base. Lyles is also featured in the forthcoming book “Faces Of The South” alongside songwriting legend Steve Earle and “The man who put Johnny Cash in black” - “Clothier to the stars”, Manuel. The band was also recently featured on PBS live concert series “Studio Amped”. The Modern Eldorados live show is more than just a concert. It Is a musical experience dripping with history and full of excitement. With all the conviction of an old time gospel preacher, Lyles delivers his unique brand of witty southern humor. When The Modern Eldorados take the stage, class is in session for a wildly entertaining lesson in authentic American honky tonk. The band is currently in studio recording their new full length album which will be supported by a U.S. and European tour.

Gulf Coast Locals When did you first open and who are the owners? We started playing around with this idea back in 2015, but really got our start in the Spring of 2016. The owners are Kasi and Ashton Calvin, a husband-wife team. We both have graphic design background, and a deep love for the city of Pensacola. How did you get into the business? Both of us have worked for small businesses pretty much our entire adult lives, and have always loved the idea of buying local. The problem is, not a lot of people think or know about up and coming local businesses. We both know a lot of people from different areas, age groups, and lifestyles, so we figured we could help promote small businesses here in town. We have also enjoyed seeing the
progress the city has made over the past few years, and want to be an active part of that. We created a “Local” brand based off of the pelican statues around Pensacola, and people loved it. The brand lets people know who we are, and finances the operation, but our ultimate goal is promoting and consulting and working with small businesses here in town. Where did you get the inspiration for your store? Pelicans have become a symbolic sort of mascot for Pensacola, so we wanted to incorporate that with our own design. And of course, everyone loves being a “Local” and is proud to represent that. Therefore, Gulf Coast Locals was born. What are your future goals?
Gulf Coast Locals www.GulfCoastLocals.com 30.3°N+87.1°W here

We would like to eventually have a whole group of Local merchants to work with. We would like to consult, market, promote, and partner with entrepreneurs to make the city a better place. Any time we can get out and interact with the public is great, and we hope to eventually start doing more work with nonprofits, especially in the realm of preparing our children for the future. This includes teaching them beach etiquette (see our children’s book - Penny Saves the Day), kindness, and also just early childhood education in general. After all, today’s children are the future of this planet and this city. What makes your store stand out among other? We are an online based store, but do pop up events throughout

the year. We work with Orileys Irish Pub downtown and Captn funs on Pensacola beach and set up our booth and sell our merchandise. We are also excited to offer custom jobs, be it a special designed local shirt, work uniforms, or just outfitting a bachelorette party. What are your favorite specials? We got our big start last year when we released a blue angels themed blue and gold Local shirt. We sold out several times, with a final total of about 250 shirts. That was amazing. We have a new Blue Angel edition shirt this year, and hope that it will be a big hit also. We also have a permanent special online of adding a “dealers choice” shirt to any order for just $10, and you also get a free sticker or koozie with any purchase!

WHO LIVED
General Daniel “Chappie” James Jr.
Daniel “Chappie” James Jr. was an American fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force, who in 1975 became the first African American to reach the rank of four-star General. He attended the famous Tuskegee Institute and instructed African American pilots during World War II. He flew combat missions during the Korean War and Vietnam War, and received the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, two Air Force Distinguished Service Medals, two Legion of Merits, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, Meritorious Service Medal and fourteen Air Medals. Daniel James Jr. was born on February 11, 1920, to Daniel and Lillie Anna (Brown) James. Daniel James Sr. worked for the Pensacola city gas company, while his mother, Lillie Anna James, was a high school teacher who established a private school for her own and other black children in Pensacola, Florida. James graduated from the Tuskegee University in 1942, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. James continued civilian pilot training
under the government-sponsored Civilian Pilot Training Program. He then enlisted in the Aviation Cadet Program of the U.S. Army Air Forces on January 18, 1943, receiving his commission as a 2d Lt and pilot wings at Tuskegee Army Airfield, Alabama, on July 28, 1943. He remained at Tuskegee as a civilian instructor pilot in the Army Air Corps later that July. Throughout the remainder of the war James trained pilots for the all-black 99th Pursuit Squadron. After completing P-40 Warhawk training and then B-25 Mitchell training, James served as a B-25 pilot with the 617th Bomb Squadron of the 477th Bomb Group at Godman Army Airfield and then at Lockbourne Army Airfield from January 1944 till the end of the war. General James was widely known for his speeches on Americanism and patriotism, for which he was editorialized in numerous national and international publications. General James died of a heart attack on February 25, 1978, just two weeks after his 58th birthday and three weeks following his retirement from the Air Force. An earlier heart attack had forced his retirement. He was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
