SAFETY
RIP CURRENTS
Rip currents can be hazardous to even the strongest swimmers who are caught in a rip and who do not understand what is going on, and who may not have the necessary water skills, may panic, or exhaust themselves by trying to swim directly against the flow of water. If caught in a rip current, DO NOT PANIC! To escape a rip current – swim parallel to the shore, do not try to swim against the current. If the current is too strong, let it carry you farther away from shore. It will eventually weaken. Then swim back to shore at an angle away from the current.
BEACH WARNING FLAGS
DOUBLE RED: Water Closed
RED: High hazard, high surf and/or strong currents

lage, St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands and tasted a drink they called “Bushwacker.” The drink was so tasty that the owner decided to try it out on the customers back home at the Shaker. After much experimentation with various ingredients, the Shaker came up with its own recipe for the Bushwacker.
The Sandshaker Lounge and the Bushwacker Pensacola Beach—known for sugar white sand, clear blue water—and Bushwackers!!! Indeed, the tales run rampant of tourists from afar who have journeyed to our beach, lured only by the (almost) world renowned Sandshaker Bushwacker. The Bushwacker has been the signature drink of the Sandshaker (a.k.a. “Shaker” and “Home of the Original Bushwacker”) for over 30 years. The Shaker began selling Bushwackers in 1975 and since that time, this rich, creamy, chocolately concoction continues to be the top selling drink at the Shaker. Here’s some historical facts about how the Bushwacker originated on Pensacola Beach…
The Bushwacker was an immediate hit at the Shaker. Originally the drinks were individually made in a blender, but they sold so well that the Shaker bartenders had trouble keeping up with the orders. After going through a lot of blenders (not to mention a number of bartenders), in 1980 a frozen drink machine was installed that made big batches. One of the main ingredients in the Shaker’s Bushwacker is “Kahlua” (a top quality coffee liqueur). In addition, today as it was back in 1975, there is no “pre-mixing”… all Bushwacker batches at the Shaker are made by hand. The rum is added to the frozen drink last… you can choose “80 proof” or “high-test 151”… or you can drink it without any rum at all! Banana and Strawberry Bushwackers are also popular and are made by adding fresh fruit to the regular recipe. There is really no end to the variations the Shaker bartenders can come up with to add their “special touch” to the Original Bushwacker!!
It all started back in 1975 when the Shaker’s previous owner visited Sapphire Beach Vil-

Slight Return Slight Return is a project started by Sidney (Pip) Pipkin in 2016. The band has always featured some of the local area’s finest musicians including Sean Peterson (bass), Chris Ozuna (drums) Scott George (guitar and vocal) Joshua Carre (bass), and many other local greats, but the line up was finalized with 5 amazing musicians that have developed undeniable chemistry. The band’s vision is outside the traditional box that requires a “frontman.” Slight Return features three “frontmen” that work as a cohesive unit to bring each of their styles and roots to the table for every gig, and that combined with one of the best bass and drummer duos in the panhandle makes for one hell of a show. Call them a cover band, but they play the music that inspires them as artists in their own way, and their improvisational instrumentals take audiences on a new journey every night. Pip Pipkin’s Mississippi Blues roots are fused with his love of psychedelic rock and a touch of jazz that create his unique approach to the guitar. His love of Hendrix, JJ Grey, Jim Morrison and Jeff Buckley inspire his earthy vocal style. Pip is assistant worship leader and guitar instructor for Community Life Church, and has

Nick Peraino is the founder of Nick and the Ovorols and guitarist/vocalist for Slight Return. Nick has shared the stage with many of music’s finest artists. Notably touring Europe with Sugar Blue (formerly of The Rolling Stones) and international artist and YouTube sensation Joanna Connor. Nick has certainly paid his dues. He earned his degree in Jazz Studies from DePaul University, and his passion for music has lead him all around the USA and Europe. Nick’s Chicago Blues roots fuse nicely with his jazz background, and his ability to create spontaneously is second to none. Nicks vocal is truly unique, and crosses all genres including blues, jazz, gospel, rock, and soul. Marc Hendrix is a native North Carolinian bass player, and has been an active member of the Gulf Coasts’s music scene for close to a decade. Along the way, he has shared the stage with the Tedeschi/Trucks Band, Jason Isbell, and members of the Meters among others. Marc made the switch to bass after an inability to adequately manipulate a bar chord (haha) and with the discovery of Frank Zappa and Phish, he has sought fluency in an eclectic range of styles. Marc cites James Jamerson, Kai Eckhardt, and Oteil Burbridge as his most notable influences. David Sharod has been a professional drummer since the age of twelve and touring since 2004 with various Gospel groups and church ministries. During his

tenure, he has worked with Black Gospel industry veterans such as The Mississippi Mass Choir, Bishop Paul S. Morton, Kirk Franklin, Dorothy Norwood, Dr. Leonard Scott, Pastor Solomon Bozeman, Rance Allen, and Seraphim Worship and Praise. His travels have included Spain, Portugal, Mallorca, France, Switzerland, Italy and South Africa. In addition to being a published producer and songwriter, David Sharod is a sponsored artist with Agner Swiss Drumsticks and has his own signature stick. He continues to play at his local church (Destiny Worship Center in Crestview, FL.), session work, and with Slight Return. Rocky Sleight was Born in San Diego California, where he started his musical career at the young age of 9, playing church service for his father’s congregation. Always drawn to the Blues, R & B, and Funk he listened to and studied Otis Spann, Dr John, James Booker, and Art Nevelle. As a teen, he played his first Professional gigs with ‘The King Biscuit Blues Band’ a pioneering San Diego blues music scene staple for years. Rocky

also played in the house band at the renown club “Funky Quarters” where he shared the stage with Albert Collins, Elvin Bishop, Sons of Chaplin, Mose Allison, Charlie Musselwhite, and many more. Relocating to Lake Tahoe, California he played for the Harrah’s Orchestra, Legends in Concert Show, Sahara Orchestra, The Drifters, The Coasters and many shows and performers that came to the Reno, Tahoe area. While there in Tahoe, he was voted by the The Lake Tahoe Tribune area readers poll “The Best of Tahoe” for best keyboard player, and for his blues band. Here on the gulf coast Rocky utilizes his 3 keyboard stack to create that “wall of sound” that sets this band apart from all the rest. B3 Organ, Piano, Clavinet, Brass, and Flute are just a few of the sounds you’ll groove too, while the energy of the band is infectious, it’s “GOT” to be felt. Keepin’ it funky and tight is the groove with Slight Return!

The Fun Store Richard Hicks - Owner
When did you first open? I opened the first Fun Store in 2007 on Highway 98 in Navarre, our next store on Navarre Beach in 2008, and what became the main store on Pensacola Beach in 2010. We even had another location for 3 years at Paradise Inn. We have now consolidated to the one location on Pensacola Beach where we continue to expand and grow. Focusing on our one location at Soundside Market. We have some great neighbors and business is booming for us all. It is a great place to come to eat at one of the 4 restau-
rants or visit the salon next door How did you get into the business? I was working out of my house doing contract work and always wanted to be outside instead of sitting behind the computer. I originally opened as a bike, skate, and water sports retailer and then went into the rental business afterwards. We continue to rent and sell Where did you get the inspiration for your store? My daughter was my inspiration. She was eight when

I opened the store and she would sit in the store and play for hours. It was really a FUN time, Now she is in college and works some when she’s home to visit. What are your future goals? We plan to continue to grow our rental fleet of bikes, scooters, golf carts, paddle boards, beach wheelchairs and kayaks and are always keeping our eyes out for new opportunities. What makes your store stand out among other? We are open 12 months a year, while some of the other companies close down for the winter months. We have a little bit of everything in our store including being the only full service bike shop on Pensacola Beach and the Gulf Breeze area. We also
