SAFETY
RIP CURRENTS
Rip currents can be hazardous to even the strongest swimmers who are caught in a rip and who do not understand what is going on, and who may not have the necessary water skills, may panic, or exhaust themselves by trying to swim directly against the flow of water. If caught in a rip current, DO NOT PANIC! To escape a rip current – swim parallel to the shore, do not try to swim against the current. If the current is too strong, let it carry you farther away from shore. It will eventually weaken. Then swim back to shore at an angle away from the current.
BEACH WARNING FLAGS
DOUBLE RED: Water Closed
RED: High hazard, high surf and/or strong currents
YELLOW: Medium hazard, moderate surf and/or currents
GREEN: Low hazard, calm conditions, exercise caution
PURPLE: Dangerous marine life

past May and next was The Break; we plan to spend quite a bit of time between the two. We have shows lined up at Paddy O’Leary’s as well. We’re coming to a party near you.
The A/V Club What band/bands are you currently playing with? The A/V Club When and where did you start playing music? I grew up in Pensacola. I joined my first band in high school and have pretty much been in a band ever since. I started out playing the local venues and got hooked on performing live. I’ve been doing the cover band thing for the past 7 years, on and off, playing mostly on Pensacola Beach and Downtown Pensacola. I sing and play guitar in The A/V Club; this band has huge potential. (Ryan) In July of 2017, Corey (aka C, drums and vocals) and Ryan (R, vocals and guitar) met through a mutual friend. C brought in Vic (V, bass and accent) and we started jamming almost every weekend. After months of begging, C and V finally managed to convince long-time friend Binks (B and/ or Z, but that’s another story, lead guitar) to join our outfit. We snagged our first gig at The Islander this
What is your favorite style/genre to play? We play a wide variety of covers with lots of tight harmonies and wild guitar solos; anything from Black Sabbath to White Stripes with plenty of grey area in between. You can definitely hear blues, rock, and funk influences in our collective style. It’s a good thing. Personally, I like anything grungy blasting through a tube amp; dirty, upbeat, blues rock. I even built my own microphone from a soup can and spare parts to fit my style. It gives a nice vintage vibe to our sets. (Ryan) Any recordings / TV spots that you have done? I’m sure there’s something on the YouTube, but nothing professional yet. We hope to start recording soon. What is a website or online source where people could watch or listen to you? We update Facebook and Instagram on the regular. Website is in the works. What are some upcoming shows for the month of July in the Pensacola Downtown or Beach areas? We’ve got some private events in July, but we’re always adding more dates. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for up-to-date info. We’ll be spending a lot of our time working on new material.
The A/V Club can be found at The Break on Pensacola Beach on Sunday, July 1st, 4pm-8pm. Make sure to check them out on Facebook and Instagram for more dates coming up. here

Gulf Coast Locals When did you first open and who are the owners? We started playing around with this idea back in 2015, but really got our start in the Spring of 2016. The owners are Kasi and Ashton Calvin, a husband-wife team. We both have graphic design background, and a deep love for the city of Pensacola. How did you get into the business? Both of us have worked for small businesses pretty much our entire adult lives, and have always loved the idea of buying local. The problem is, not a lot of people think or know about up and coming local businesses. We both know a lot of people from different areas, age groups, and lifestyles, so we figured we could help promote small businesses here in town. We have also enjoyed seeing the
progress the city has made over the past few years, and want to be an active part of that. We created a “Local” brand based off of the pelican statues around Pensacola, and people loved it. The brand lets people know who we are, and finances the operation, but our ultimate goal is promoting and consulting and working with small businesses here in town. Where did you get the inspiration for your store? Pelicans have become a symbolic sort of mascot for Pensacola, so we wanted to incorporate that with our own design. And of course, everyone loves being a “Local” and is proud to represent that. Therefore, Gulf Coast Locals was born. What are your future goals?
Gulf Coast Locals www.GulfCoastLocals.com 30.3°N+87.1°W here
- Pensacola Beach | www.herepublications.com
We would like to eventually have a whole group of Local merchants to work with. We would like to consult, market, promote, and partner with entrepreneurs to make the city a better place. Any time we can get out and interact with the public is great, and we hope to eventually start doing more work with nonprofits, especially in the realm of preparing our children for the future. This includes teaching them beach etiquette (see our children’s book - Penny Saves the Day), kindness, and also just early childhood education in general. After all, today’s children are the future of this planet and this city. What makes your store stand out among other? We are an online based store, but do pop up events throughout
the year. We work with Orileys Irish Pub downtown and Captn funs on Pensacola beach and set up our booth and sell our merchandise. We are also excited to offer custom jobs, be it a special designed local shirt, work uniforms, or just outfitting a bachelorette party. What are your favorite specials? We got our big start last year when we released a blue angels themed blue and gold Local shirt. We sold out several times, with a final total of about 250 shirts. That was amazing. We have a new Blue Angel edition shirt this year, and hope that it will be a big hit also. We also have a permanent special online of adding a “dealers choice” shirt to any order for just $10, and you also get a free sticker or koozie with any purchase!

The Fun Store Richard Hicks - Owner
When did you first open? I opened the first Fun Store in 2007 on Highway 98 in Navarre, our next store on Navarre Beach in 2008, and what became the main store on Pensacola Beach in 2010. We even had another location for 3 years at Paradise Inn. We have now consolidated to the one location on Pensacola Beach where we continue to expand and grow. Focusing on our one location at Soundside Market. We have some great neighbors and business is booming for us all. It is a great place to come to eat at one of the 4 restau-
rants or visit the salon next door How did you get into the business? I was working out of my house doing contract work and always wanted to be outside instead of sitting behind the computer. I originally opened as a bike, skate, and water sports retailer and then went into the rental business afterwards. We continue to rent and sell Where did you get the inspiration for your store? My daughter was my inspiration. She was eight when

I opened the store and she would sit in the store and play for hours. It was really a FUN time, Now she is in college and works some when she’s home to visit.
What are your favorite specials? Our four hour rentals are a real good price point. On all of our equipment, the longer you rent it, the cheaper it gets by the hour/day.
What are your future goals? We plan to continue to grow our rental fleet of bikes, scooters, golf carts, paddle boards, beach wheelchairs and kayaks and are always keeping our eyes out for new opportunities. What makes your store stand out among other? We are open 12 months a year, while some of the other companies close down for the winter months. We have a little bit of everything in our store including being the only full service bike shop on Pensacola Beach and the Gulf Breeze area. We also continue to grow our kite inventory, having the largest kite selection on the beach.
What events do you regularly have or any special events for the month of July? Summer! Summer is our busy season and we are open 8:30 until 7, seven days a week. Come out to the beach and see us for some fun!!!

people seem to crave our caramel apples. However, our in house chocolates is a year around specialty. Whether it is the homemade peanut butter bar, dark chocolate covered caramel, or hand dipped chocolate covered strawberries, you sure to find something that can be your personal favorite.
we opened two years ago. The way things are going, a second location could be in the cards one day. What makes your store stand out among other? While our store is small, our selection is big. We cook our Fudge, Caramel, Pralines, and Toffee in house using 100% cane sugar and premium ingredients. Or handmade and hand dipped chocolate treats also feature top of the line Callebaut Belgium Chocolate. It’s this attention to quality and our homemade specialities that allow us to provide a unique, one of a kind experience. We know some people like the traditional hard candies and gummies too, so we we also carry a wide array of traditional and hard to find candy. We love it when people come in and find products they haven’t seen in years. Of course you can’t forget about the ice cream on a summer day.
What events do you regularly have or any special events for the month of July? Our team loves to create special items for holidays, and the 4th of July is no exception. We will have lots of patriotic specials. We also do custom orders for events such as weddings, birthday parties and even large dinner parties. For example, we once made fish shaped fudge and treats for a 300 person ocean themed event. There really is no limit to what we can create on request. Check out rental space, cooking classes and special tasting events happening upstairs at SoGourmet!
What are your favorite specials? Bubba’s favorite is always the hand dipped chocolate covered rice crispy treats, he prefers the milk chocolate over the dark chocolate. When he is in town we have to make extra just for him. But we have so many great treats it is hard to say what is most popular. Ice cream is super popular in the summer, but once we get to the fall here - Downtown Pensacola | www.herepublications.com

Bubba’s Sweet Spot When did you first open and who are the owners? Bubba’s Sweet Spot is a joint venture between PGA Tour golfer Bubba Watson and Quint and Rishy Studer. We opened up on Palafox Street in the heart of downtown Pensacola on July 1, 2016. Our goal is to help make Pensacola the greatest place in the world to live by providing visitors with a great experience one customer at a time. How did you get into the business? Bubba Watson and the Studers are committed to the revitalization of downtown Pensacola and they were looking to add a fun family friendly destination to compliment the expanding restaurant and retail scene. Once the idea of opening a candy and icecream shop was suggested everyone instantly agreed it was the perfect fit. For Bubba is was particularly
special because he had always wanted to start a candy store, and opening one in his hometown of Pensacola was truly a dream come true. Where did you get the inspiration for your store? Our team visited candy and ice cream stores all over the country looking for inspiration, but our goal wassimple. We wanted to build a place that kids would love while reminding adults that it is OK to have a little fun. The bright colors and stripes in the store are meant to convey a sense of fun. What are your future goals? We are always working to improve the store and constantly adding new and different products is part of our DNA. That commitment seems to resonate with our customers who have become very loyal since

What is your favorite style/ genre to play? I’m not sure if I have a favorite genre to play; there are just some songs and styles that speak to me. I love the chance to meld songs together; do things people will remember. In and ideal situation, a good mix of rock, fusion, and r&b is what I am aiming for.
Johnny Lee What band/bands are you currently playing with? Currently playing at the piano show in Seville Quarter. I would like to expand with a side project or two down the line. When and where did you start playing music? I started singing at a young age; my mother would get me to sing for her and her friends. She played music in the navy and would have me learn to harmonize with here when she was home. I took some piano lessons when I was young, but being naive about it then, I walked away from it to learn other instruments. Had the chance to play in some smaller bands while I lived in Virginia Beach, even sang with Chaka Khan, but no major traveling bands
Any recordings / TV spots that you have done? I have recorded a ton of music over the years and published some of those pieces. The only issue is, as I’ve become more and more involved with the spectacular level of talent in this area, I’ve pulled some works off of distribution in hopes to do them better and work with more people. I have plans to work with a local band to re-record some of my original work along with creating some new ones. I haven’t worked on many TV spots, but I hope to change that in the very near future. What is a website or online source where people could watch or listen to you? Actually I’m putting the final touches on a new site at the moment. YouTube is a great platform to reach a broad audience and I want to do more with it. I’ve been in so many others peoples videos, I think it’s time I post my own. The site will reach across most social media sites and give me an opportunity to do more personal songs. What are some upcoming shows for the month of July in the Pensacola Downtown or Beach areas? My schedule usually remains the same at the piano show: Wed-Sat 8-2am. Once I have the time to focus on more side projects I’ll have more dates to share. With my birthday being in July, seeing everyone out would mean a lot!

Perfect Plain When did you first open and who are the owners/manager? Perfect Plain was in the works almost two years to the date we opened; November 21, 2017. DC Reeves (our founder and CEO) and Reed Odeneal (Director of Brewing Operations) are our two primary owners. We have several silent financial backers as well. How did you get into the business? I grew up in the bar and restaurant industry and fell in love with the romance of creating unique, memorable experiences for every guest who sits at my bar. Where did you get the inspiration for your bar? Our inspiration derives from many like-minded beer lovers across the country. We wanted to create a space that takes our guests away from Pensacola into a city like Asheville. Breweries like Creature Comforts in Athens, GA was a huge inspiration for how we designed our space. What are your Future goals? Our mis-
sion is to create incredible experiences that make our beer, our brewery and our hometown, Pensacola, unforgettable. Our goals always stem from that mantra and we’re striving every single day to bring that experience to our guests. What are your favorite drink specials? We don’t currently offer any drink “specials.” However, we are always trying to Perfect Our Plain by giving back to our local community in the way of local nonprofits by donating a portion of each beer sale back to the organization. What events do you regularly have or any special events for the month of July? Sundays: 2-4 - Yappy Hour with housemade pup treats baked with our spent grain Mondays: 7-9 - Brew IQ Trivia with Jarrell Hendrix July 23-29: Pensacola Craft Beer Week (more details to follow!)

EAT
Restaurant Iron Alex McPhail - Head Chef When did you first open and who are the owners/head chef? We opened in 2012 at Marcus Pointe Golf Club with Alex McPhail as the head chef. In 2014, we moved to our current location in downtown Pensacola. As our location changed, our ownership evolved into a small group of local investors. How did you get into the business? We saw a need for a fine dining option at Marcus Pointe and were grateful to receive the attention of both the golf course community and Pensacola diners. We were excited to move to the downtown area, where
we’ve had the opportunity to expand our menu and refine our selections. Where did you get the inspiration for your restaurant? Chef Alex worked in New Orleans for almost 7 years working at some of the most prestigious restaurants, like Commander’s Palace & Restaurant August, with some of the most influential chefs. One of the primary driving forces of inspiration for Restaurant Iron is the changing of the seasons. What are your Future goals? We would love to grow and expand throughout the Gulf Coast
