Frisky Dolphin Sunset Oyster Bar & Grill Michael Hall - Co-Owner

Owners Kevin Hausfeld and Michael Hall had been mulling over the idea of opening a bar and restaurant for many years. At first they were looking in the downtown area, but that changed when they met Greg Gordon who owns Sabine Marina. Greg Gordon owned the building at Sabine Marina with a huge deck that overlooks Little Sabine Bay and boasts some of the best sunsets in the area. After viewing this sunset, Kevin and Michael were hooked. They decided to open a casual atmosphere restaurant where people and families could come get some delicious food after a long day at the beach. Friskey Dolphin specialize in seafood such as Oysters - raw, steamed, baked and fried, along with Crab, Shrimp and

local Redfish menu items, but also have many other items for people who may not like seafood such as Nachos, Chicken Tenders, the Island’s best Philly Cheese Steak. The owners decided from the beginning to procure ingredients a level above what most restaurants serve. It costs the owners more, but the Frisky Dolphin’s customers say it is definitely worth it. The Frisky Dolphin has live entertainment Friday – Sunday and serves the Island’s Best Breakfast on the weekends with $2.50 Bloody Marys and Mimosas. Come enjoy the Frisky Dolphin voted Best New Restaurant by Best of the Bay and VIP Pensacola Magazine and Best Outside Bar by VIP Pensacola Magazine.

When did you first open and who are the owners/head chef? We opened Friskey Dolphin in December of 2016. The owners are Kevin Hausfeld and Michael Hall. The head chef is Todd Henderson. How did you get into the business? Mike & Kevin had been kicking the idea around for about 15 years, and the opportunity came up with a location on the beach. We both love to cook and have been successful in other businesses, so the timing just seemed right. Where did you get the inspiration for your restaurant? Mostly the inspiration had been floating around in Kevin’s mind for years. His father owned a seafood restaurant when we were kids, and that just stuck with him. Both of their favorite foods are seafood as well, so it just seemed natural. Future goals? Our future goals are to do our best to get this right, every time, and for every customer. It is a challenge that may not be possible, but we have to give it our best shot and to teach our staff to do the same. It is possible that we may expand later and further down the road. What makes your restaurant stand out among other? We try to do what we do,

the best that we can. We use ingredients that cost us more, so that we can try and provide a better experience to our customer. For example, for our breads on the po’boys, french dips, and cheese steak sandwiches, we use bread from Amorosa in Philly because it just tastes better. It costs 4 to 5 times as much, but you can really taste the difference. We also try to be picky about the seafood that we purchase. We want to serve the best product that we can, for a reasonable price. What are your favorite specials? We have specials every day of the week (weekdays). From .60 raw oysters and .60 chicken wings, to $1 baked oysters and fried mullet, we love them all. What events do you regularly have or any special events for the month of April? During the spring we do Karaoke every Friday night out on the deck. We have large speakers and lights, and we are right on the water, so the singers feel like they are center stage. We also have live music every Saturday afternoon and night, and we mix it up on Sunday’s… from Dj’s to solo/duo acoustic type music, to full bands.

DRINK

Paddy O’Leary’s Irish Pub Seamas Hunt & Gary Humphrey - Owners

When did you first open and who are the owners/manager? Gary Humphrey and I opened Paddy O’Leary’s on Pensacola Beach in March of 2000. How did you get into the business? Gary and I went to Ireland for my brother’s wedding and upon return we decided the Pensacola area needs a real Irish Pub. We still remain the only Irish pub on Pensacola Beach. Where did you get the inspiration for your bar? After our trip to Ireland, we really wanted to bring the feel of a traditional Irish Pub to Pensacola Beach. We decided on using a lot of wood in our pub, including the hand crafted wooden bar. What are your Future goals? To continue to operate as an authentic Irish pub giving the residents of Pensacola Beach

as well as our annual visitors a little taste of Ireland. What makes your bar stand out among other? We are one of the only pubs in the area to have Guinness on tap and I can guarantee that we’ll pour the best pint in town. We also serve Irish Carbombs which have quickly become a local favorite as well as our house drink - The Paddywacker. What events do you regularly have or any special events for the month of April? We have live music every Friday and Saturday Night featuring some of the area best bands. You can catch The Full Monte here every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month as well karaoke on Tuesday nights and open mic on Wednesday nights.

LISTEN

was a long time ago, in the 60s. Some of those kids went on to play with famous bands/performers. We were blessed to find each other that early, and as teenagers, traveled and played behind some famous acts. What is your favorite style/genre to play? That’s a hard question. I think it was BB King who once said, “There are only 2 kinds of music, good and bad.” So, I find something to like in every genre. I have written in several genres, to include jazz, pop, rock, country, blues, etc. My favorites are probably funk/ R&B and melodic pop/rock.

Bill Dossey of

Lektric Mullet What band/bands are you currently playing with? Currently, I am playing with Lektric Mullet, and very proud to be doing so. Those guys (Randy Whitaker, Ricky Lee Phelps, David Glencoe and Kyle Lehning) are excellent musicians, and a couple of the guys (Ricky and Kyle) are past Grammy winners and multiple award winners. In the past I have done everything from solos to fronting an 11 piece R&B group. In my life, music it the singly most dominate element of human culture. When and where did you start playing music? I was 16 and living in Indiana when I got into my first band. My God, that

Any recordings / TV spots that you have done? With Jim Stewart, we finished the first CD (Meanwhile Back at the Ranch) in 1995. Jim is a marvelous musician. Then I did the solo CD Sunset Island here in 2004. That CD was so successful I was shocked! I believe it lead to all the other things I have done locally. Followed that with the CD Where Did I Go Wrong in about 2008, which included about a dozen great musicians. Now I simply finish a tune in my studio and post it on FB for folks to hear. What is a website or online source where people could watch or listen to you? Well, my earlier things are available on You Tube, and of course about 100 sites like Apple iTunes, CD Baby, Spotify, etc. The latest tunes can be heard on my Facebook page. What are some upcoming shows for the month of June in the Pensacola Downtown or Beach areas? I will be playing with Lektric Mullet this Sunday (June 3rd and 17th) at the Sandshaker on Pensacola Beach. We usually play there every 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month. Most other shows are private or the timing is unsure. I also like to go down to Paddy O’Leary’s on Pensacola Beach and sit in with Full Monte every chance I get.

Bill Dossey can be found playing with Lektric Mullet on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month(June 3rd and 17th) at the Sandshaker on Pensacola Beach. here

SHOP

Pensacola Beach Boardwalk The Pensacola Beach Boardwalk is located on The Sound side of Pensacola Beach, just to the north of Ft Pickens Road. Whether you are a local or a visitor, the boardwalk is the perfect place for shopping, dining, live entertainment or meeting up with some friends for a drink during sunset at one of its many bars and restaurants. The Shell, located at the main entrance to the boardwalk, regularly hosts live music and special events during the warmer months of the year. The powder white sand and blue waters of Santa Rosa Sound provide the perfect backdrop to take in the whole experience. The boardwalk provides a central hub for some of the best shopping

that the beach has to offer. From the large beach stores to the small and unique boutiques, the shopping on the boardwalk has something for the entire family. Quietwater Beach, known to the locals as “Mom’s Beach”, provides a safe area for small children with it’s calm and shallow water. Public picnic areas are also located in this area, but get there early as they usually fill up quickly. There are several ways to access the boardwalk other than the perking lot. Pensacola Beach’s free trolly service stops there as well as the Portofino ferry. There are also two public docks to tie your boat up to as you enjoy the day.

SAFETY

RIP CURRENTS

Rip currents can be hazardous to even the strongest swimmers who are caught in a rip and who do not understand what is going on, and who may not have the necessary water skills, may panic, or exhaust themselves by trying to swim directly against the flow of water. If caught in a rip current, DO NOT PANIC! To escape a rip current – swim parallel to the shore, do not try to swim against the current. If the current is too strong, let it carry you farther away from shore. It will eventually weaken. Then swim back to shore at an angle away from the current.

BEACH WARNING FLAGS

Fort Pickens Pensacola Beach

Fort Pickens is a pentagonal historic United States military fort on Santa Rosa Island in the Pensacola, Florida, area. It is named after American Revolutionary War hero Andrew Pickens. The fort was completed in 1834 and remained in use until 1947. Fort Pickens is included within the Gulf Islands National Seashore, and as such, is administered by the National Park Service. After the War of 1812, the United States decided to fortify all of its major ports. French engineer Simon Bernard was appointed to design Fort Pickens. Construction lasted from 1829 to 1834, with 21.5 million bricks being used to build it.

Fort Pickens was the largest of a group of fortifications designed to defend Pensacola Harbor. It supplemented Fort Barrancas, Fort McRee, and the Navy Yard. Located at the western tip of Santa Rosa Island, just offshore from the mainland, Fort Pickens guarded the island and the entrance to the harbor. Fort Pickens and offers many recreation opportunities for visitors to enjoy including fishing, swimming, hiking, biking, birdwatching, picnicking, camping, historic structure tours, and ranger-led programs. Visitors must pay an entrance fee to enter the Gulf Islands National Seashore where Fort Pickens is located.

LEARN

Pensacola MESS Hall

When did you first open and who are the owners/instructors? The MESS Hall was founded in 2012 by Dr. Megan Pratt. What led you to starting your organization? The MESS Hall was inspired by the popularity of “Science Saturdays” hosted at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. Where did you get the inspiration for your organization? MESS stands for math, engineering, science, and stuff. We hope to inspire scientific curiosity and critical thinking within our community. What are your future goals? We just hosted the inaugural Gulf Coast Science

Festival in downtown Pensacola, with great success and plans to make it even bigger next year! This summer, visitors to the MESS Hall will find all new exhibits, workshops and MESS Kits to explore. Local science enthusiasts and adults who want to learn more will also enjoy our interactive evening events. What makes your organization stand out among others? The MESS Hall is not your typical science museum, with planned outcomes, and run-of-the-mill exhibits. We aspire to allow visitors to work like real scientists, developing questions and creating experiments, engaging in complex reasoning and learning science just through tinkering.

Aragon Wine Market Charlotte Gordon - Owner

When did you first open? I opened in October of 2008 when the bottom fell out of the economy. People thought I was crazy to open a business during that time period. My own bank wouldn’t even give me a loan. Opening during hard times became a blessing to me. I learned how to survive under harsh conditions from the get go. I’m the sole owner. Where did you get the inspiration for your store? When I was working on my business plan, I visited other wine stores every chance I got. In every city I visited, I searched out wine stores and wine bars. I took what I liked from each visited store and included it in Aragon Wine Market. What Are Your Future goals? We keep expanding here at Aragon Wine Market. One place in particular, Bachannel in New

Orleans, comes to mind. They started as a retail wine store and organically grew into the fantastic place they are now...with food and music. Pepper, the store manager, is quite experienced in event planning so we hope to have more events here in the upcoming months. What makes your store stand out among other? Personal service, no doubt. We get to know our customers and their taste in wine. Often I will be sampling some particular wine with a wine rep and think of a certain customer that I know will like that wine. What events do you regularly have? Our Thursday night wine tastings from 5-7 have become increasingly popular. Occasionally we will have live music and food, but they are always a great time.

challenges. Those men received both wisdom and vocational support from Coach D…whether they wanted it or not! Tens of thousands of lives in the Myrtle Grove and surrounding areas were affected and influenced by the love and care provided Jim and his staff. It was the best years for the Myrtle Grove area; and when Jim retired, the Myrtle Grove area would never be the same. After a short retirement stint, Jim’s soul was stirred again. He recognized the need for sports within his own growing church, and over a period of time, he created a local sports league that rivaled many others on literally a budget of nothing. He loved giving children (and parents) an alternative to the highly competitive larger organizations and it was here that he served the Community one last time; speaking and breathing life into those who were less fortunate both financially and perhaps in talent. While fighting a five year battle with cancer, he never missed a sports season or a chance to minister to those in need. Even on the day of his death, he met with men from the church for a prayer breakfast. But on February 22, 2007, he was called to his final retirement. Even in death, his legacy was felt. Thousands of people locally and abroad showed to pay their final respects at his “retirement party”. His life had touched so many! And 10+ years later, not a week goes by that his family will run into someone who will say how Jim affected his or her life. It is our hopes that through the James C. Downey Community Center, his legacy can continue to thrive and more lives can be touched and given a second chance at the abundant life that Jim wanted to share with everyone. We hope you will celebrate Coach Downey’s life through this venture and help us make an impact on the lives of Myrtle Grove once again! The Jim C. Downey Community Center is a notfor-profit, 501(c)(3) organization whose purpose is to serve people through community engagement. A community center in West Pensacola that fosters inclusive community participation by providing an environmentally sound facility for arts, education, recreation, and celebration.

The Downey Center is a non-profit corporation operated exclusively for educational and charitable purposes within the meaning of Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, named after Coach Downey. Jim Downey upon retiring from the Air Force, moved to Pensacola where his legend was forged. His goal was to work for the YMCA, but without a college degree, he could not obtain employment there. Jim didn’t even have a high school diploma, so college seemed far-fetched. But this was a challenge that Jim would easily tackle. In fact, while taking classes at the University of West Florida full time, he also took a fulltime job as the Director of the Salvation Army in Pensacola. He quickly put his stamp on the Community, offering sports and leisure programs for the young and old - homeless and helpless. He epitomized the word “Public Servant”. As a Christian man who sought to bring hope to others, he found incredible satisfaction in helping others both spiritually and physically. You may have heard of one local man he helped while there – a young Emmitt Smith. Emmitt started his football career playing in a rec football league that was run by Jim while at the Salvation Army. It was here that he was first affectionately called “Coach Downey” or “Coach D”. Coach D gave his time and energy, many times spending 12+ hours a day working and serving, all while taking classes and ultimately graduating on the Dean’s List from UWF. Just a few years after graduating, he finally fulfilled his dream of working for the YMCA. The Myrtle Grove “Y” (MGY) on Lillian Highway was in desperate need of leadership. It was run down, mismanaged, and overlooked by the more popular Northeast and Downtown “Y”. But that didn’t matter to Coach D. He loved the challenge and within a year or so, the MGY was the crown jewel of Pensacola’s YMCA’s. It was profitable and more impressive, it was full of life! Through the MGY, Jim Contact served the poor and middle class alike. He didn’t Facebook: @dpsnwf.org care who you were – if you needed something, he Call: 850-529-2895 was there to help! one my mother has made for as long as I can remember, and it is amazing. The rest of the pieces sort of fell into place after that. What are your future goals? As a café I would love for us to be known for our great food of course but also our hospitality. We believe that comfort food should be accompanied by a great service and a friendly environment and that is what we strive to provide here at the Aragon Café. I think my main goal is for us to be a “local” treasure. What makes your restaurant stand out among others? What I enjoy most about the café other than the food is the atmosphere. It is a unique space being connected to a barber shop and salon. The

architecture inside the build is very open and inviting. Exposed brick wall and dark stained wood provide unique setting the is enhanced by local artwork and great blues music.

What are your favorite specials? ●Meatloaf Monday - $2 off meatloaf ●Happy Hour - 4pm to 6pm - $1 off Beer and Wine by the Glass / $1 off wings / $5.99 Nachos What events do you regularly have or any special events for the month of June? EAT

The Aragon Café Nicholas Stearns - General Manager

When did you first open and who are the owners/head chef? We first opened our doors on Nov. 20thof 2017. The café is owned by Doug and Alice Campbell. The café is spearheaded by myself as General Manager & Head Chef Cory Ernes. How did you get into the business? The café was never initially in the plan for the downtown expansion. The Campbell’s were looking to expand their Salon and Barber Shop into Pensacola area and originally that is all the space was going to consist of. However they approached me to see if I was interested in becoming a part of the business and what I thought I might like to do. At first we mulled the idea of a coffee shop but I have no real

experience with coffee shops so the idea shifted to something I was familiar with, food service. Where did you get the inspiration for your restaurant? When we finally decided that a café is what we wanted to do, we now needed to make a decision on what we wanted to bring to the table. I have always had a great love for comfort food in particular bbq but I didn’t want a BBQ resturaunt. Doug and I talked back and forth and we felt that we could still bring an element of bbq with out it being our only option and it still be successful. All we had to do was think of other home cooked foods that brought we love. The meatloaf is one such meal, the recipie is inspired by the
