And of course I love me some fashion, so when I learned that the online fashion retailer, AlexaPope. com was created by three ladies from right here in Nova Scotia, I was addicted right away. SKYBOX BARBERY & SALON LOCATION 1235 Barrington Street Phone: 902.406.7326 Web: www.skyboxhaircuts.com Email: dan@skyboxhaircuts.com

HOURS Monday: 10-5 Tuesday&Wednesday: 10-6 Thurs&Friday: 10-8 Saturday: 10-5

Meet

Daniel O’Grady Why did you decide to start Skybox Barbery & Salon? As a guy, we provide a place where you can get a hair cut and shave in an environment that doesn’t feel like you’re back in the 50s. I played with that idea; added a contemporary twist and a guy themed atmosphere. And I always wanted a beer when I engaged these activities... Skybox Barbery & Salon was born. Also, with an almost 7 yearold running around I need to start a legacy for him. What is your background? Education, Work Experience? I’m a home brew, school and all. Working full-time at Emera as a beaner. Do you have any partners? Two other guys own two similar spots

About

Skybox Barbery & Salon When did Skybox Barbery & Salon Open? June 2013. What makes Skybox Barbery & Salon different than other salons? Cool and classy. We provide a masculating environment that also has a women’s

eye for the finer details of life. Oh, and free beer. How many people does Skybox Barbery & Salon employ? 3 and looking to add another. Do you have a specific clientele? Men? Women? Cater to men, but fullservice for women as well. We see a lot of university and young & older professionals.

What do you want our readers to know about Skybox Barbery & Salon? New and growing, looking to expand both the concepts (Skybox Barbery & Salon, and Skybox Hair Cuts) in the Maritimes and then spread west. Interesting parties welcomed. What services does Skybox Barbery & Salon offer? All the traditional

barber services: clippers and straight blade shaves. And all women styling services: cuts and colours. What is your general price range compared to other salons? We’re competitive to every where in the city but offer more in a new and cool environment. How many locations are in Nova Scotia and Canada? 3

called Skybox Hair Cuts with more of a sports theme, community feel to their locations. We market our two concepts as a similar brand with different demographics. I also do work with Bubba Rays and The Locker Room promoting each others interests. What roles do you play at Skybox Barbery & Salon? Completely behind the scenes. While the girls are out front clipping, I’m cooking the books out back. But I act as the face for PR and marketing initiatives. How do you know Dylan? Outside of being best friends for years and roommates for a time, Dylan likes to assume ownership to my sons dog, London, and highjack her for a few days often bringing her home 5 pounds lighter and covered in sh*t.

LAST OF THE OLD KIND

MARKETING AND RICKSHAWS Downtown Halifax (spring garden & Argyle) Thurs. Fri. Sat. nights & events.

Meet

Dylan Sagar Why did you decide to open a Rickshaw business? Rickshawing is the best summer job to have in Halifax. No question. I knew that I would always want to do this and just noticed to much opportunity for marketing going to waste. I was done with talking about

About

Last of the Old Kind When did the company open? We officially registered as a corporation in Feb. but the first two rickshaws were built last summer by and old friend Curtis LeLacheur, (with his 1 year old daughter and pregnant fiancee calling him every 12 minutes) as well as myself.. We have 4 full time staff, 2 part time, with 13 runners. (including PEI)

how it could be made better, and just did it. What is your background? Education, Work Experience? Grew up in Tatamagouche, (and if you don’t know where that is your missing out!) Moved on to the military, had a variety of sales jobs in Can/US, all the while attending SMU for a crim and religion degree.. then back to smu again to start a management/ entrepreneurship degree.. then basically got tired of all the theory and talking and decided to pull the trigger. Do you have any partners? Yes, Tara Linton is the organizer behind the scenes keeping us on track and accounting for everything that happens. Shalisha Pikel makes it all look sexy, designing our logo, taking photographs of our team and managing our social media. What roles do you play in the company? Train the new runners, close marketing deals, build rickshaws, loads of signatures, paperwork etc. Basically whatever can not be outsourced I do. The staff and runners have been essential to having such a successful

Where is the most popular rickshaw location? Argyle st. is my real office. Friday/Saturday night you can’t go wrong. You can tell who’s going to the Toothy Moose, (they are the best customers) and we make damn sure before we drop them off there, to be the most entertaining part of their night. Are you open during the winter season? We are, you can catch us in Nassau (Bahamas) doing what we do best. Let us know if you are coming! We will do it big with you.

pilot season. I am incredibly fortunate to have these people around me. How do you know Dan? Dan was one of my first good friends I made when I came to Halifax. We hold joint custody over a whimpy little dog, London. (aka Onion) I am the cool ice cream country trips dad. He’s homework dad.

With the Halifax laws that are prohibiting rickshaws to be in the boardwalk, will this effect business? The boardwalk was home to rickshaws for a long time. Last of the Old Kind is the only company in Halifax that meets their requirements. However, we are still in discussions/drafting up paperwork to get us down their officially. How much does it cost to use the service? The million dollar question! The one question everyone wants to know.. Well here it is; You will have to

spot the red carts (and maybe a pink one) and find out for yourself! ;0) What do you want our readers to know about the business? We are growing rapidly and (thanks to Tara) effectively. We will be looking for not just for runners, but also motivated people who can join our marketing team as we expand into Ontario next year.

Leaving Impressions with

LUXX Interiors www.luxxinteriors.ca

In many cases, budding entrepreneurs start their company in the comfort of home with the hopes of expanding worldwide, but not in this case. Robyn McCarthy, a native Haligonian travelled across the world to Vietnam where she pursued her career as an interior decorator.

I wanted to grow and learn the art of interior decorating outside of Nova Scotia and gain an alternate perspective, because I knew it would give me the experience and niche that no one else in the province had.

“I always knew I would come back home and continue my career.” McCarthy moved to Vietnam on February 21, 2013 where she was hired by a friend to design her new

12 | Faces Magazine | August 2014

restaurant. “A good friend of mine who lives there invited me to help her work on the designs for her restaurant chains. She knew I needed and wanted more experience in the field. So I jumped to the opportunity and was on a plane 2 weeks later,” she explains. “They encouraged and showed me the way to be discipline enough to be a business owner.” And that’s exactly what she did. During her trip to Vietnam she wasted no time in starting LUXX Interiors and then relocating to Nova Scotia. “The best part about owning my own company is that every day I get up to go to work, I know it’s me following my dream. I get so much satisfaction from doing what I love to do. Once I have completed a project, the best part is seeing the reaction on your clients face when they see it! “ LUXX Interiors offers initial consultations, furniture placement, window treatments and accessory shopping and coordination. McCarthy charges $75.00 an hour for her work, “for example if someone has an average sized living room needing to be decorated it takes roughly 8 hours to complete the job. Starting with the 1 hour consultation, sourcing, furniture placement, colour coordination’s and project assembly/completion.”

McCarthy also owns LUXX Contracting, which is convenient component if a client requires interior decorating aid, as well as renovations. “This really gives me a lot of opportunity to explore my options and prevents any limitation to my vision of the space,” she explains. McCarthy wants our readers to be inspired to follow their dreams. “Don’t let the fear of the unknown keep you from your destiny. I opened LUXX Interiors not just to say I am an entrepreneur, but to say and know that I truly believe in and love what I do. When you are passionate about what you do people can see that, which in turn creates good and positive responses. People will always remember the way you make them feel, and when everyone leaves happy you know you are successful.” “I grew up always wanting to re-arrange every room in the house. I was always asking my parents if I could change the colour of my wall every few months and positioning my bed every possible way throughout my childhood and teenageyears,” McCarthy reminisces. “Now I get to play around with different spaces and themes for a living and I couldn’t be happier!” PHOTOGRAPHY BY NIMA MAZINANI

fun horoscopes

Horoscopes ARIES There is a nice transition as the evening approaches, and it is a time to forget work and celebrate love. Erotic appetites are irresistible.

PISCES

LIBRA After a period during which you have busied yourself with practical things alone, this evening is time to go out, meet people and have a great time!

VIRGO

People successfully clear up practical issues and new help is due to arrive, perhaps in the form of a colleague who is the ideal person to partner with you.

There are a number of issues that need to be tied up in your personal and social life today, but by evening time you are ready to take time off.

AQUARIUS

You are in exceptionally good company right now, and soon you will be joined by yet another creative mind. The battle lines are drawn up.

This evening you can expect someone to turn up on the horizon to make life even more interesting. But keep out of arguments based on ideological beliefs.

CAPRICORN There is a battle of wills and ideologies brewing in your social circle. Peacemakers strive to find a path, but you may not go along with it.

SAGITTARIUS Someone you have been waiting for is about to arrive, and together you can reach any mountaintop. Make time for friends and celebration tonight.

SCORPIO This is a good day to mull over changes in the balance of power. In conflict situations you are about to be outnumbered. Secrecy is advised.

LEO

CANCER This is a good day for tying up loose ends in communication, which will enable you to move on to take advantage of some brilliant financial opportunities.

GEMINI You are ready to disentangle yourself from financial and domestic concerns and start a more outgoing process, when you join forces with a charismatic partner.

TAURUS The evening brings domestic duties which can be extremely enjoyable. A demanding partner can be satisfied in the way nature intended.

We don’t expect to be surprised. We’re hoping for our current demographic to come: “sports Fans of all sports”. Do you see Bubba Rays expanding outside of Nova Scotia or becoming a Franchise one day? Of course the long term vision is to expand your brand and I think it’s definitely in the cards to expand in and outside of Nova Scotia.

We will definitely be having a patio next summer and we will do some very creative things to offer the indoor experience for sports fans outdoors. How will the new bubba rays stand out from other restaurants in the area? We will be delivering the true sports fan experience with a simple recipe, great food, great atmosphere and great service. Our point of difference will also be the 40+ TV’s. Do you expect the demographic to stay the same at the new location?

PAIGE

How did you decide on the location for the new Bubba Rays? This location has been a well-established bar/restaurant for over 30 years. It was a no brainer for us. Its’ a great opportunity to attract the 4,500 people who work in the building every day. We have no shortage of parking, we’re out of the downtown core and we think there’s a real demand for a great sports bar in this area of the city. Any extras at Bubba Ray’s Too? We just ordered a brand new top of the line Shuffle Board from The Billiard Shop on Kempt Rd. We’ve got a pool table, a few arcade games, Buck
