Describe the atmosphere at Bubba Rays. The atmosphere at Bubba Rays Sports Bar is electric. There is no better place to watch the game. Working the FIFA World Cup this summer, and four years ago has been an amazing experience. People come from far and wide to support their countries and show true patriotism. It’s a good day at work when I see grown men cry happy tears. What’s you fav item on the drink menu? There’s nothing as refreshing as a nice cold subzero Coors light on tap. If you weren’t serving you’d be? Slaving over my own business. It’s my dream to open a small Eco resort on the water
somewhere in Nova Scotia. What is a must-have drink at Bubba Rays? All of our cocktails and martinis are good but I’ll let you in on a secret. Gary’s Whiskey Sour and Hawkin’s Long Island Iced Tea are the best in town! Ssshhhh it didn’t come from me! If you could serve one celebrity who would it be and what would you serve them? Tom Brady. Anything he wants. Popular nights/ happy hours to go to Bubba Rays? Thursday is Wing Night. Cheap wings starting at 5pm. Pitchers of Coors light and Canadian are on special all day everyday. Personally Football Sundays are my favourite.

Alex MacLean’s Amazing Achievements Alex MacLean is a young and ambitious 22-year-old entrepreneur who is the owner and founder of Halifax’s East Coast Lifestyle, a successful company that sells t-shirts, sweater, socks and more. Each article of clothing or paraphernalia has an anchor and reads East Coast Lifestyle. The apparel is extremely popular not only in Halifax, but around the world! Even major celebrities have been sighted wearing East Coat Lifestyle apparel including over 60 NHL players such as Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Brad Marchand and
Faces Magazine asks
Alex MacLean Do you think East Coast Lifestyle will remain a Canadian business? It is fully trademarked in the United States and Australia so right now I am trying to grow it internationally with all of the supportive Canadians behind the movement. My goal is to put Atlantic Canada on the map!
Do you design all the clothing yourself or do you outsource help? I’ve done most of the designs myself from the original anchor logo to our new custom fabrics. I’ve brought on a female designer to improve our women’s line so be sure to see our apparel diversify. When did you realise this was going to be a profitable business? As soon as people were requesting different products and travelling

the world repping the gear proudly. It makes me very proud to see people come together and rep their coast with East Coast Lifestyle. Did you ever imagine East Coast Lifestyle to be this successful? I thought it was a good brand name and today I’m absolutely amazed at the support behind it. I love to hear the stories and journeys people go on while wearing ECL, cant thank everyone enough.

Jonathan Drouin. Other entertainers including Mac Miller, Classified, Waka Flocka Flame, Cody Johns, DVBBS, Kim Coates and many more are sporting the popular brand. Alex MacLean was born and raised in Halifax, but moved to the valley after high school to pursue business at Acadia, which is where East Coast Lifestyle was born. He was in an entrepreneurship class at Acadia with 8 students where the class was asked to invent something for a graded project. “I have always loved the east coast and believe there is a special unique lifestyle that we live as east coast’ers so wanted to create a clothing line for people to be proud of where they come from. I still remember when I asked my father for $800 to purchase my first 30 hoodies. My friends bought the first 30 and I used the profits to purchase
Do you have any new projects in the works? Whether it’s with East Coast Lifestyle or a different company/idea? We have some serious news to release very soon but its confidential right now, so be sure to watch our social media for the news to release in July. We also just released our summer collection on our website so be sure to check that out also!
If you weren’t the CEO and Founder of East Coast Lifestyle what do you think you would be doing? I’m an entrepreneur so I would bet that id be working on another venture trying to start something up from the bottom up. Its fun to watch something grow from zero into your biggest dreams. Where do you see East Coast Lifestyle in 10 years? In 10 years I hope ECL is as big as it is in Canada in the

I still remember when I asked my father for $800 to purchase my first 30 hoodies. My friends bought the first 30 and I used the profits to purchase 60 hoodies. Since then we have sold over 175,000 units.... 60 hoodies. Since then we have sold over 175,000 units in our first year of business and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store.” East Coast Lifestyle currently employs just under 10 staff and MacLean does the majority of this business on his cell phone, United States and Australia. Thankfully those two countries have very popular “east coast” destinations so I’m hoping they will tap into our brand as well. Do you have any advice of aspiring entrepreneurs? Work hard, play hard. Don’t take life too seriously and make sure to enjoy the ride. Always be sure to stop, take a minute and think about what your doing so you can appreciate it as much as you can.
“I use social media to grow the brand and showcase our newest threads. One day an office will come around but for now I want to travel and experience the world,” he explained. The company is a Canadian brand and is mainly manufactured in Canada.
What is one thing you want our readers to take from this article? This brand started with an initiative to sell 30 hoodies and get a good grade in a class at university. Anything is possible when you get passionate about your work so make sure whatever you do in your life you enjoy it so you never have to work a day in your life.
MacLean explained that there can be an issue in getting some fabric colours that are only available in areas outside of Canada but they always try to stay local and keep their products Canadian made whenever possible.
Want to join the East Coast Lifestyle Movement? You can purchase the apparel online at www.eastcoastlifestyle.ca/ and also at selected Pseudio stores. Bold and Colourful Clothing from
Conni Zafiris shopzafira.com | lf @zafiraapparel | A @shopzafira
Conni Zafiris is a young and vibrate 26-year-old fashion designer that has recently started her own “bold and fearless” Canadian clothing line called Zafira Apparel. Born and raised in Halifax, Zafiris was living in Montreal when she decided to move back to Halifax in May 2013 to focus on growing her business here. Zafiris knew she wanted to be a clothing designer when she “started reworking second hand clothing about seven years ago, creating new designs from old clothes. This turned into a little business and I realized I really loved the design process and sewing,” she explains. Three years later she started the fashion design program at LaSalle College in Montreal and her passion took off from there! Zafiris describes her clothing as “Bold colours and fearless prints.” She explains “The Zafira woman is confident, adventurous and looking to stand out. Fearless in her exploration of fashion but looking for something practical to wear along her journey.” Right now Zafiris only does women’s clothing but has done men’s bow ties in the past. “I am looking to add a few men’s accessories to my fall collection!” she exclaims.
12 | Faces Magazine | July 2014
Zafiris designs everything herself. “I do everything from the trend research and sketching, choosing the fabrics, drafting the patterns to cutting and sewing the prototypes. I help in the production process where needed but most of the sewing is done by contracted seamstresses,” explains Zafiris. “We are proudly made here in Nova Scotia.” In five years Zafiris says she would like to be “a successful online business and have customers shopping Zafira all over the world. I want to be designing my own textile prints. I would also eventually love to have a full men’s line.” The prince range for the Spring/Summer ‘14 collection is roughly $50 for some of the basic shirts to $170 for one of their more extravagant dresses like the “garden gown.” Looking to purchase clothes from the Zafira Apparel? You can buy clothing through their online website www.shopzafira.com and through their popup shop events that Zafiris holds. Follow them on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for up to date details on where they’ll be popping up next and the latest pieces!
