THE LOTTERY The money from the Dare to Dream Lottery will fund the needed extensions and renovations for the Bryony House shelter, as well support programs and services. Ticket sales for the early bird draw ends on May 30 and the draw will happen at the house on June 20. The $1.2 million dollar home comes fully furnished. Other prizes include six vehicles, six trips for two and $100,000 in cash prizes. There are a limited number of tickets available. ABOUT BRYONY HOUSE Bryony House has provided a safe refuge for women escaping intimate partner violence for the past 35 years. A nonprofit organization, Bryony House has 24 beds and provides 24 hour emergency services. Each year, approximately 470 women and children stay there, and counsellors answer more than 2,500 distress calls. Bryony House was formed in 1978. Before that time, no formal services for abused women and children existed in Halifax.

04 | Faces Magazine | April 2014

Laurie Ehler How did I get involved with Bryony House? I have been the Executive Director of Bryony House for the past seven years. How did you and Kris come into contact and come up with the idea of the dream home? I approached another person, Maria Sancho, to come on board to help us with a capital campaign to build an extension to the shelter to better serve the women and children who come stay with us. Maria knew Kris who was a contractor. We spoke about our idea and she was instantly interested in helping us with a project. Maria and Kris came up with the idea of doing a lottery for Bryony House. It’s been a crazy experience for all of us since no one had experience in running a lottery. Kris and Maria’s passion and energy have kept this going. Tell us a bit about the Bryony House and how women are able to get into contact with you. Bryony House is a 24-bed shelter. Each year, approximately 470 women and children stay with us and 2,500 distress calls are answered. Our dedicated counsellors are there to answer the 24-hour distress line, provide individual/group supportive counselling, public education, advocacy and referrals. An important part of our work is to break the cycle of violence. Women who contact us come from many walks of life, socio-economic classes and cultural backgrounds. What they have in common is that they are in, or are fleeing, an abusive intimate relationship. Women can call us at 422-7650 at any time if they need shelter services or just to get advice and information. We are here to help. We also have a community outreach program. Call 429-9003.

Kris Martin The Lottery The purpose of this lottery is to raise enough funds to renovate the shelter for women as well as add some space. The shelter needs upgrades and renovations. The structure is old and electrical and plumbing needs to be upgraded and updated. There is a need for added space that will offer more beds as well as more services to women and children. Furthermore, I plan to partner with the Bryony House to create some second stage communal living, supportive and affordable units to be able to accommodate mothers and children coming out of abuse and violence. Right now there are very few options available for women with children. Why Kris got involved I got involved in this project because someone had to, because I have a mother and a daughter, because I want to do something about it and because I am a woman. I believe there is a strong need for the community and private enterprises not only to get involved but to invest. There is something called social responsibility. We are all paying for this through our tax dollars. When a woman leaves her partner under such difficult circumstances, her heart is broken, her brain is shaking...her body sometimes beaten...there is a lot of damage. Appropriate housing, shelter, is of outmost importance. It can save us all a lot of moneys spent in Health Care and Social Programs and it creates hope.

BUBBA RAY’S

Terri McWatters

Daily Dose of

Duckworth Canadian Snowboarder Alex Duckworth By Katie Conklin

Describe the atmosphere at Bubba Ray’s? I would say its a fun and energetic atmosphere. People hanging out with friends watching and cheering on their teams.

Alice from Alice in wonderland. I take life as one big adventure always stopping to explore and meeting people along the way.

What’s your fav item on the food menu at Bubba Ray’s? A buffalo chicken sandwich with sweet fire sauce.

if you could serve one celebrity who would it be? what would you serve them? Justin Timberlake, I would serve him the breakaway martini. He just seems like a fun, martini drinking kind of guy.

What is a must-have drink when coming to Bubba Ray’s? An ice cold sub zero Coors light draft

Craziest thing to happen while you were bartending? Xzibit casually coming in for lunch on a Sunday afternoon

if you weren’t bartending you’d be ....? In the consignment clothing business.

Popular nights / happy hours to go to The Locker Room? Thursday nights are our wing nights and Saturday nights are always good.

What fictional character best describes your personality?

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to recreate the feeling I had at the top of the Halfpipe competing for Canada.

Faces Magazine asks

Alex Duckworth Who has been your major influence? Sarah Conrad and Trevor Andrew have been a huge influence as other Nova Scotian snowboarders who put this part of the country on the map in snowboarding circles. What is the best part about being a professional snowboarder? Being outside every day and constantly discovering new places

are the reoccurring themes that keep me involved in this lifestyle. Being part of a style-based sport is also very cool. I’ve really loved watching the sport evolve over the past ten years. Did you ever think you would be going to the Olympics? The Olympics have definitely been on my mind for a while. When you chose to be competitive in your sport and you make it onto the National Team, the Olympics sort of default as the ultimate goal. I think anyone who subscribes to this

Horoscopes ARIES

LIBRA

After the recent excitement it is good to think about security and consolidation. Strong opinions, especially at home, tend to dominate the scene.

This is an excellent time for intimacy and people do their best to make you feel secure. On the financial front, more money comes your way.

PISCES

You are extremely receptive to the ideas of others at the moment, and fortunately you can trust your friends and advisors completely at the moment.

It is a pleasure to share some of you ideas and dreams with other people. You have a way of putting things that is really convincing.

AQUARIUS It feels good to be at home or with the family, and the next couple of days can be a real pleasure… especially if you don’t have to go out to work.

CAPRICORN People are very sure of themselves and partners in particular are willing to argue their case. You’ll probably end up coming around.

SAGITTARIUS Don’t expect everyone to agree with you… you can’t be right all the time. Sometimes it is better to take a risk than to play safe.

SCORPIO Partners and people generally are supportive and motivated to stick to tried and tested ideas. If they do that, neither you nor they can go wrong.

VIRGO

LEO You feel extremely strongly about your ideas for the future, and express them forcefully. Influential people can help, but they need to feel secure.

CANCER If you plan to implement a new professional angle, then it is good to have the support of friends and other organizations. Great success is on the way.

GEMINI You are attracted to the quiet life and prefer to get on with your work undisturbed. A minor examination needs to be well prepared for.

TAURUS The moon enters your sign which means that stability and security are uppermost on your list of priorities. Still, people seem to want to discuss everything.
