Casino Nova Scotia Atlantic Canada’s Entertainment Destination Casino Nova Scotia, Atlantic Canada’s entertainment destination is the place to go if you’re looking for a great entertainment experience. Attracting visitors from around the world, the casino offers every entertainment experience imaginable, including: live entertainment, dining, and of course numerous gaming options such as slots, blackjack, poker, craps, baccarat, and roulette. Here are some of the team members who create a great entertainment experience:
Spencer Wyse Spencer joined the team in November 2011. He is full of energy and has an extensive background in bartending and customer service. According to Spencer, “When I’m at work it’s all about having fun, especially with my guests. I love interacting with people and making sure they have an enjoyable and memorable evening - I want them to come back.” In 2012, Spencer saw an opportunity to create more
excitement on the gaming floor by creating his own bar. Employees and guests fittingly named the bar “Spencer’s Place,” which has become a very popular spot for guests to hang out on Friday and Saturday evenings. Spencer likes to play around while at work and will sometimes put on a little show for his customers with his bottle juggling. It’s important to Spencer that he makes each guest interaction personable and unique.
Karen Murdock Showgirls add the sparkle and glam, bringing smiles to guests’ faces and lasting memories in photographs. Lead showgirl, Karen Murdock joined the team in 2009. She always makes sure the casino is always well represented at special events. Overall the casino has about 25 showgirls and guys (although mostly girls). The showgirls and guys have a range of jobs to do such as, hosting, posing for photos, unveiling new games, but most importantly they’re always the life of the party. As Karen says, “We’re lucky to be involved in so many events. Casino Nova Scotia hosts a variety of events and they ‘re always mixing up the crowds. We have done everything from the Halifax Pride Parade to the Halifax Firefighters’ Feel the Heat and always have a blast. We also get to be involved with many of the Casino’s VIP and Guest Appreciation events which are always fun because we get a lot of positive feedback from guests and people really enjoy taking pictures next to a real live showgirl!”
Angela Bourgeios Angela is the dealer extraordinaire! This gal deals eight different table games (how cool is that?) including Blackjack, Let It Ride, Texas Hold’em, Mississippi Stud and Poker. Angela says poker is her favourite game to deal, “I just love the game. It’s a different game structure to the many games at the casino. In poker the players play against each other whereas in the other table games guests play against the house. It makes for a different guest interaction.” Angela has been a dealer at the casino for 11 years, joining the team in 2002. She had just finished school studying to be a legal assistant, to bide
her time she attended a casino job fair, was hired and has been at the casino ever since. She say’s what keeps her around are, “her fellow employees, favourite customers, and well, the money’s pretty good.”

enVie
A Vegan Kitchen
We caught up with Cory Urquhart, co-owner of enVie Vegan Kitchen to discuss the opening of his new restaurant
The atmosphere at enVie is something we would like to think is different from anything else in Halifax. We wanted it to be a very comfortable home-like atmosphere and a place with an open kitchen where people can see how the food is prepared. It’s a small and intimate space. We spent a lot of time in Europe and when people compliment us on the decor and how it makes them feel like they are in another city or country, we know we succeeded in what we wanted to create. On the food side, our chefs work incredibly hard at making the food, preparing things you can’t find anywhere else in Halifax. We also put a lot of effort into plating the food and presenting it to the customer, so it gives off an upscale vibe, but it is a place where you can come with your friends and have some cocktails, or a place where you can have a table for 2 by the window and enjoy a little date night. We also have a big booth that you can reserve for groups of 6-10. The most popular dishes on our menu would probably be the quinoa and mushroom burger served with crispy chickpea polenta fries, or the seitan donair with garlic aioli, or our play on “scallops” which are actually local king mushrooms stems marinated and pan seared then served over kelp noodles. We offer
a lot of gluten free and raw options on our menu, including our desserts which change frequently. Our raw chocolate torte is our most popular dessert item and we usually go through at least a full cake a day. We also do macaroons, coconut ice cream pie, and as I write this the girls in the kitchen are preparing an amazing key lime ice cream, and guess who does the taste tests? THIS GUY. If I could suggest a drink at enVie I would say either the Caprioska or the Corpse Reviver. Ian Cameron from La Frasca came up with our cocktail menu. It’s scary how good these are and how refreshing they are considering we use 2oz of alcohol in all our drinks. If you are a vodka person, the Caprioska would be perfect. If you like Bourbon, try the Corpse Reviver, it will do exactly as the name says - think adult lemonade. We also have a selection of vegan wines, meaning no egg whites are used in the filtering process, and we support local vineyards as well, our Blomidon L’Acadie and Benjamin Bridge Nova 7 are our most popular wines so far. We also have local cider, a gluten free beer option, and local beers from Garrison and Keith’s. Working with your wife is great. People always say never work with your loved one it will tear you apart bla bla bla. Those people dwell on the negatives and worry too much. Me and D are completely opposite people and it works out great. She is the most driven and motivated person I have ever met, and I’m not just saying that so I can get a delicious meal a few times a day. I like to keep things very light and fun and
04 | Faces Magazine | September 2013
make sure people laugh and enjoy themselves while they are eating the delicious food she has thought up and prepared. We have our disagreements for sure, but at the end of the day we always bike home happy and realize we are doing what we love, and showing people you can eat healthy and enjoy our food just as much and hopefully more than anything you’ve tried before. We are at the restaurant from 7am to midnight literally 6 days a week. I think people can appreciate that when they come into enVie. It’s tough to get more hands on than us, we don’t pay people to do our social media, we run our own website, we do our own payroll, we decorated and painted the whole place with the help of the best friends anyone could ever ask for, we got all the loans ourselves and put all of our own money into this. At the end of the day, and I’ve said this many times before, everyone you do business with is a pain in the a** in some kind of way, everyone has their own agenda. So why not get into business with an a** that you love and care about more than anything in the world? We are just 2 people who love to have fun and put smiles on peoples faces. A fictional character that best describes my personality? Foghorn Leghorn. Do a side by side pic and you’ll see why. We use local as much as we can and only use other suppliers when absolutely necessary. We get our burger buns and pitas from Big Life Whole Foods located in the old Brewery Market, our Gluten Free buns come from Odell’s Gluten Free Bakery in the north end, and tofu from Acadiana Soy Products. We get a lot of our local produce from Noggins Farm, grains, organic flours and oils from Speerville Flour Mill, organic nuts and seeds from Prana out of Montreal and our awesome organic greens from Four Seasons. And of course, when we run out of supplies we are heading next door to Local Source who has been there for us since day one, which reminds me, we probably need to pay our tab! Ha!

The cultural and economic impact of international students in Canada is tremendous.
Students from around the world enrich the educational experience of Canadian students by bringing global perspectives, new cultures and languages to our campuses. According to a July 2012 federal government report, international students pursuing their education in Canada generate 81,000 jobs, nearly $8-billion in spending and more than $445 million in government revenue.
SPENDING
10 | Faces Magazine | September 2013
More than one million Canadians are pursuing an undergraduate education – a record number. In 2011, undergraduate enrollment (full-time and part-time) surpassed one million (1,015,000) for the first time ever. Since 2000, the number of full-time undergraduate students in Canada has grown by nearly 44 percent.
1.3M ADVANTAGE
University graduates routinely earn much higher incomes and experience more stable employment than those without a university education.
During their careers university graduates will typically earn $1.3 million more than those with a high-school education alone. The lifetime income advantage for a bachelor’s graduate over a registered tradesperson or college grad working full-time is $1 million revenue.
4/10
GRADUATE DEBT-FREE Among those students who do graduate with debt, 30 percent owe less than $12,000. For those who graduate with debt, the average amount they owe is $24,600, with a median of $20,000.

healthy living
Healthy Living BY LUKE COREY
Wow, where did the summer go? It’s already September! Luckily, the Fall is one of the nicest times of the year, and is actually my favourite season of them all. Summer vacations are over, the temperature is cooling down, school is starting up again for a lot of you and many people are getting back into their normal routines. From a health perspective, this is an extremely important time of the year. If you’re like most people, you probably indulged a little more often during the summer than you normally do, drank more alcohol, enjoyed more bbq’s and so on. The Fall is your chance to right the ship and get back into a healthier routine. How much should it cost you to get healthy? That is a question I deal with on a daily basis. I have seen first-hand the money that people spend on their health and well-being. Some of it is well-spent, but a lot is needlessly wasted on products or services that we don’t need, or that don’t benefit us in any way. In reality if enough effort is put into learning how to take care of yourself, the cost to get healthy should be nothing! We are lucky to live in a part of the world where we have access to fresh foods, clean water and ample outdoor space. That is really all you need to live a healthy life. We don’t need fancy exercise equipment, or purified water from a stream in the Himalayas. We can want these things, but
we don’t need these things. Believe me, your money can be better spent elsewhere. The first step is to educate yourself on how to live a healthy life. Learn the basics of good nutrition and healthy eating (see previous issues of Faces Health), and implement them into your daily routine. Purchase fresh, wholesome foods and make your meals from scratch. Next, take advantage of the fact that we live in an amazing city where you can go running, hiking, biking and swimming, or play any type of sport that you want, all for free. Stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking water.Yes, tap water is perfectly safe for you. If you are worried, buy a Brita filter and fill up a water bottle. What am I trying to say? I’m letting you know that you can live and maintain a perfectly healthy life for absolutely free! Enjoy your September everyone! I’ll see you in October where we will talk about how to be healthy at school and in the workplace! Email me with any questions or comments you may have. -Luke Corey, BA(H), BScAHN, Registered Dietitian Complete Health and Nutrition E: info@completehealthandnutrition.ca www.completehealthandnutrition.ca

box” to attract customers. Courtney, being Social Media savvy herself, choose to use Instragram, Twitter and Facebook as her ‘promotional’ strategy. She began posting photos of newly arrived merchandise to all three social media tools, and soon discovered that the approach attracted clients. “I sell out of items in a day, thanks to social media,” Courtney enthuses. Courtney discusses Social Media as being one of the reasons for the positive interest in BTHB, the other being the fact that items offered at BTHB are unique and affordable. Everything is under $100 which is rare to find at a privately owned Boutique.
“I find it is important to remember that at one time I was a customer – I put myself as the buyer when I price items. If I wouldn’t personally buy it at that price, I’m not going to mark it at that price.” There’s a lot to remember when returning to school, especially in regards to ‘Back to School Fashion’. No one wants to go to their first Lab, or more importantly their first party wearing the same outfit as someone else. That’s why shopping at exclusive boutiques like Better Than Her Boutique (BTHB), is crucial to finding unique, but more importantly affordable pieces for your Fall wardrobe. Better Than Her Boutique (BTHB) is locally owned by Courtney Jones.
Before opening BTHB Courtney was a teacher. It was during a yearlong post in Nunavut where she constantly urged her students to commit to their dreams, that she found the drive and ambition to follow her own dreams by opening BTHB last November. BTHB is located on the second floor of Spring Garden Place Mall. Since many businesses in Spring Garden Place lack a “street visual” to entice foot traffic, Courtney had to think “outside the

Better Than Her Boutique’s merchandise of clothing and jewelry runs a range of styles from ultraglam cocktail dresses and statement necklaces to frayed denim and midi rings. The clothing and jewelry are practical for everyday life, but add a unique twist. “My personal style is reflected in a lot of items” Courtney says of her stock, which she personally selects from L.A. and brings in new arrivals weekly.
Better Than Her Boutique Ships 32 Prom Dresses to Hall Beach Nunavut A few key traits set Courtney apart from other young entrepreneurs. One is that she still thinks like a teacher. “As a teacher, I had a moral accountability to positively influence the younger generation,” she explains. It may have been that “moral accountability” that prompted Courtney’s most recent charitable endeavor. After collecting prom dress donations from her customers, Courtney (with the help from First Air) shipped

32 Prom Dresses to Hall Beach, Nunavut. They were donated to the 2013 graduating class at Arnaqjuaq School –where Courtney taught Grade 4 for a year. Courtney also volunteered her time and BTHB’s clothing to Charles P. Allen and Dartmouth High Schools’ end-of-year fashion show.
