Oktoberfest Unique Canadian Version of a Great German Tradition

Magazine Directory

Faces MAGAZINE Editor in Chief Justin MacKinnon

Food, Fun, Froth, Frauleins Und Fantastich Musik! The festival captures the spirit of Oktoberfest with a local Ottawa area twist. By combining great local beer brewed specifically for the festival, local food vendors offering delicious Germanic and Canadian fare and local musical entertainment, it’s a uniquely Canadian version of a great German tradition. This year we’re pleased to have Big Rig Brewery, Hogsback Brewing Company and Broadhead Brewery providing the “froth”. Special surprises will be popping up all over the place. Last year one of Canada’s long running and popular TV series “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” joined in on the celebrations to tape segments for a future episode. From Humble Beginnings to Eastern Ontario’s Premier Heritage Bavarian Festival. Oktoberfest Ottawa came from humble beginnings. What started as a one-night dinner fundraiser 5 years ago, has now turned into a must-not-miss event for the people of Ottawa and surrounding areas. President Dwight Brown along with Andrew Inderwick, John Beard, Jason Robinson and Darren Stevens have nurtured Oktoberfest Ottawa Inc. into a not-for-profit, volunteer driven organization that has grwon into Eastern Ontario’s premier heritage Bavarian festival Ticket Information at www.oktoberfestottawa.com @oktoberfestott Facebook: Oktoberfest Ottawa

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH Sonny juane of Ottawa's premiere bartending school

BartenderOne

Ottawa@BartenderOne.com | 613.699.7663 | BartenderOne.com/Ottawa

“ “

Bartender One is one of the few bartending schools run by people that actually own and operate bars and restaurants.

06 | Faces Magazine | September 2013

What is BartenderOne? BartenderOne is Ottawa’s premiere bartending school. We provide full courses and certifications for those interested in becoming bartenders as well as consumer workshops for people who want to learn about mixology for personal use. Why do you think learning about Bartending / Mixology has become so popular? I think people like Bartending because it’s a transferrable skill set. You can go to almost any country in the world and work as a Bartender. Graduating students have worked at places like the Calgary Stampede, resorts and cruise ships. Some students have even trav-

eled the globe working as a Bartender. Some people may decide they want to make Bartending a career. I know some Bartenders that make more money than some first year engineers or lawyers (without the student debt!). For some students they look at Bartending as a second job to work evening or weekends. Their view is, instead of paying to go out they get paid to be out. For those just interested in learning about Bartending/Mixology on a casual level I would say it’s because of the introduction of things like the Food Network the desire to learn more about mixology and culinary arts has increased. Learning about food and drink has become incredibly popular.

Our Workshops are the best balance of education and entertainment.

Why did you start BartenderOne in Ottawa? If you were to talk to any bar or restaurant owners and managers they would say one of the biggest issues they have is finding qualified staff. I myself have experienced this issue first hand. There are many people out there that have the personality and desire but not the experience. At BartenderOne we help provide the training and the knowledge to prepare students so that they are more ‘Job Ready’ when they decide to apply to the hospitality industry. How does BartenderOne differ from other schools? BartenderOne is one of the few bartending schools run by people that actually own and operate bars and restaurants. This unique perspective ensures that the content being taught is both relevant and current in todays Hospitality Industry. BartenderOne classes are held in active bars not labs or classrooms like

other schools. Our goal is to provide the best reality based training possible and minimize the gap between what’s taught and what actually happens in the real world. All students who successfully graduate from BartenderOne Ottawa are guaranteed an internship at one of the following locations: • Liquor Store Party Bar • Industry Room • The Drink • Whiskey • Pub101 • Great Canadian Cabin • My Condo • Pier21 • Fat Tuesdays • Velvet Room • Cornerstone (This list is constantly growing as we develop and foster relationships through training with other bars and restaurants.)

Can you tell us more about your Mixology Workshops? Our Workshops are the best balance of education and entertainment. More and more we’re seeing the lines of Culinary Arts and Mixology becoming blurred. Concepts normally reserved for cooking are being introduced into mixology and visa versa. Our Workshops are perfect for people who are interested in learning about mixology and are often attended by individuals or couples looking for a fun and interesting experience. Do you do anything with Groups? Definitely. Since our launch in Ottawa we’re seeing a lot more interest in doing group events like bachelor / bachelorette parties and corporate team building events. People love doing events and activities where they can both learn something and enjoy a unique experience.

Our goal is to provide the best reality based training possible and minimize the gap between what’'s taught and what actually happens in the real world.

Classes & Workshops

Bartender 101 (3 days) Description: If you have ever wanted to be able to mix drinks like the professionals, this introductory bartending program will teach you to make the most popular and current cocktails, martinis, and shooters requested in bars today. You train with an industry leading Mixologist, in an actual working bar with the professional tools and equipment. With 27 unique tasting experiences, you will have firsthand knowledge of the preparation, appearance and taste of today’s top beverages. Also included in this program are red wines, white wines and champagne. Upon graduation you will have the knowledge and confidence necessary to make great drinks! MasterClass Certification (5 days) Description: This course is precisely designed to deliver real world results to students who have never bartended before. Unlike other traditional Bartending Schools that are predominantly focused on the memorizing of recipes that bartenders simply don’t make any more, BartenderOne Masterclass Certification is a reality based program designed to satisfy the needs of managers who hire bartenders today. Mixology Schools that deliver just drink recipes are only giving a small part of what you need to know about being a bartender.

Workshops (2-2 ½ hour) Description: With the popularity of the Food Network and the use of the Internet the lines between mixology and culinary arts are becoming less and less defined. People are developing a more sophisticated palette and are looking for experiences that can be both be informative and entertaining. Our instructor lead workshops help fulfill that need by providing a program that not only talks about different recipes but also teaches the most current techniques and methods in mixology.

Workshops are great for Bachelor/ Bachelorette Parties or Corporate Events.

The cultural and economic impact of international students in Canada is tremendous.

Students from around the world enrich the educational experience of Canadian students by bringing global perspectives, new cultures and languages to our campuses. According to a July 2012 federal government report, international students pursuing their education in Canada generate 81,000 jobs, nearly $8-billion in spending and more than $445 million in government revenue.

SPENDING

08 | Faces Magazine | September 2013

More than one million Canadians are pursuing an undergraduate education – a record number. In 2011, undergraduate enrollment (full-time and part-time) surpassed one million (1,015,000) for the first time ever. Since 2000, the number of full-time undergraduate students in Canada has grown by nearly 44 percent.

1.3M ADVANTAGE

University graduates routinely earn much higher incomes and experience more stable employment than those without a university education.

During their careers university graduates will typically earn $1.3 million more than those with a high-school education alone. The lifetime income advantage for a bachelor’s graduate over a registered tradesperson or college grad working full-time is $1 million revenue.

4/10

GRADUATE DEBT-FREE Among those students who do graduate with debt, 30 percent owe less than $12,000. For those who graduate with debt, the average amount they owe is $24,600, with a median of $20,000.

Kreesha Turner Canadian musician

Rock and Country music. “There are only a few Canadian acts that get the recognition they deserve in the Canadian market, and often it’s after they’ve blown up somewhere else. There’s obviously a few exceptions, like Classified [who] gets amazing love and support from the Canadian music industry, but sometimes it feels like it’s definitely a harder territory when you’re doing Urban music, than it is in the U.S.” Don’t expect any mini-Kreesha Turners running around with microphones in their hands just yet because the singer is simply enjoying her third year of wedded bliss, insisting “We don’t have any current plans we’re just focused on our careers right now.” Kreesha’s music career is on fire, as the bubbly beauty is currently working on her new album entitled “Evolution Inevitable” which she hints will be due out a few months after its initial single, “Gimme Dat”, is officially released for radio. - Grace Odumo Editor In Chief | 613style.com

“ Now that Edmonton, Alberta native Kreesha Turner is living in L.A, meeting and working with the best of the best in music is easier than ever. That’s not to say that Mrs. Turner never thinks about Canadian music though; Kreesha

looks back at the industry that crowned her as the artist with the most played song on Canadian radio in 2008 (for “Don’t Call Me Baby”) in hopes that it will learn to embrace Urban music with the same open arms that it has for

EXERCISE OF THE MONTH

Single Leg Squat By Jessica Kanstrup - Goodlife Fitness

(1)

(2)

Description: The single leg squat is a challenging and effective exercise which targets the glutes as well as the quads, hamstrings and core stabilizers. How to: Start by standing on one leg, with the opposite leg extended out in front of you. Keep your arms extended out in front as well, to help you stay balanced. Squat down as low as possible on the one leg, shifting your weight to your heel and keeping your core engaged. Return to starting position and repeat. Aim to squat down to at least 90 degrees and continue to progressively go lower as you get better. I suggest using a bench behind you as a guide when first starting off. Repeat for 12 reps - 3 sets each leg.

Italian Week Celebrates 39 Years in Ottawa Italian Week in Ottawa, in it’s 39th year, celebrates the rich diversity of Italian-Canadian community, their heritage of culture, food, music, poetry and the vibrant passions of it’s people. Article / Photos by Giovanni

Italian Week president Claudio Pagani, did not disappoint the city. A little bit of Carpineto to Ottawa featuring music by Compagnia Popularia band direct from Lazio, Italy as they performed for guests that danced and ate at a sold out event held at the Tudor Hall. People boarded a boat to cruise along the Ottawa River and see some historical sites as they danced to the music performed by The Tequila Band. St. Anthony’s Church procession was attended by thousands of people in

the hot weather. This year the Italian Week Person of the Year 2013 is Angelo Andrella, who got his award at 2013 inaugural Italian Week Gala dinner - 460 in attendance this year - which was held at St Anthony’s Soccer Club. This year co-hosts were Vittorio Coco (Chin TV / Radio, Toronto), and Trina Costantini-Powell. The Showtime Party Band, which performed an eclectic mix of classic oldies, disco music, and more current popular songs, made sure everyone was up and dancing all night long.
