.................................................................................... What made you want to create Flipburger? We have been working on the idea of flipburger for the past 3 years and wanted to give people a great burger and at a great price with locally sourced products, with no hormones, antibiotics, fresh and premium quality. Chris Tzaneteas and I opened flipburger in June 2012. It’s our creation, and it’s locally owned and designed.

Cooked fresh upon your arrival, you can make your own masterpiece by choosing from a variety of unique toppings or try one of Flip Burger’s innovative signature meals. All burgers are served on buns baked fresh or you can enjoy a ‘naked burger’ served with fresh, crisp greens and garden ripe vegetables. It’s eat-in or take-out, but either way, you’ll be savouring an exceptional dining experience featuring ingredients that are carefully selected, and locally grown and sustainable whenever possible.

• LOCAL BUSINESSES

We call it the “better burger”, every single element of the menu is carefully selected for superior flavor and presentation. It’s real food, prepared fresh and fast, where quality is never compromised and meticulous attention to detail results in a fine dining experience that is healthy, yet still affordable.

Magazine Directory

Do you have a passion for cooking/good food? I do! I’m extremely passionate about all, but I’m over the top when it comes to creating a great burger. Fresh, local, never frozen premium! Come see us during burger week march 20 to 26, our Chef Matt Brewer has come up with a mac & cheese burger topped with locally sourced short rib. Matt believes in the local movement being a hometown chef source as many local ingredient’s as possible with his modern spin on cuisine there’s no limits as to where flipburger can go. What got you into the restaurant business? My Family has always been in the business and I got my passion for the industry from my father and mother What was the first restaurant you owned? The Graduate pub 20 years ago. The location was exactly where downtown flipburger is today! I’ve come full circle, I guess.

THE LOCKER ROOM’S

Talia Derby

Dixon’s Determination becomes his Destiny By Katie Conklin

Describe the atmosphere at The Locker Room? It’s like a giant living room, you feel at home there. Saturday nights remind me of a house party with unlimited beer and good beats. What’s your fav item on the food menu at The Locker Room? Suicide boneless wings, extra wet with a side of ranch What is a must-have drink when coming to The Locker Room? Line Drive. Double or nothing. if you weren’t bartending you’d be ....? Backpacking Southeast Asia. What fictional character best describes your personality? Dory because I am extremely forgetful.

if you could serve one celebrity who would it be? what would you serve them? Beyoncé. I would serve her a fine, antique white wine because she too gets better with age. Craziest thing to happen while you were bartending? I was serving drinks when Canada won the Gold medal for men’s hockey in the 2014 Sochi Olympics. There was so much passion in the crowd that I couldn’t help but celebrate with them. I’ve never seen so many people so happy. It was awesome. Popular nights / happy hours to go to The Locker Room? Thursday is our wing night and Saturday nights there’s always a party in the locker room!

Faces Magazine asks

Stephen Dixon What made you decide to play in the KHL? It’s a really good league. When I had the offer to come I thought it would be a great experience hockey wise and to live in Russia. I’ve enjoyed it so far and hope to be here for a few more years! What is the main different between NHL and KHL? The biggest difference with hockey in

North America and Russia is the size of the ice. The ice rink is a lot bigger in Russia therefore you have a lot more time and space. The game is a lot of puck control and it’s less physical because of the size of the ice. It’s two totally different styles of hockey. Which league do you prefer? I’ve liked all the leagues I played in. The only difference is the travel in different leagues. In Finland and Sweden most of your games are pretty close so you’re sleeping in your own bed at home every night.

Russia is such a big country. When I played in Khabarovsk my first year in Russia it was an eight hour flight to Moscow with a seven hour time change and we’d have our game the next day. It’s basically the same as flying from Halifax to Moscow to put it in perspective.

Profile

I was going to Sweden, a country I really didn’t know much about. But we had a great group of guys on the team and everyone spoke very good English in Sweden, so it made the transition pretty easy. What are some interesting cultural differences in Russia compared to Canada? The society structure seems to be a bit different than Canada. Canada seems to have more of a middle class. Most people

A new restaurant has opened up in Downtown Halifax unlike anything our city has seen. The Action House Bar & Grill’s brilliant concept has been in the making for a few years by owners of the Grafton Conner Group and is finally open! At random times of the day and night approximately three to five items of delicious food and drinks are auctioned off to customers who have the chance to bid. When it’s time for an auction a server stands on a podium, loudly introduce them self and explains how the process works – firing up the crowd! The server starts the bid at a small amount and it just goes up from there. The more customers who bid the more the item go for – just like a real auction. Every table comes with a paddle that is raised to signal a new bid. Sometimes bids get quite competitive, especially for “any of our house made desserts” says Ian Bunting, Manager with Grafton Connor Group. They auction off a variety of items from a large plate of nachos to deep fried cheese curds to share amongst friends.

10 | Faces Magazine | March 2014

Every month the total amount raised from the auction items are donated to a charity, “we choose a different charity each month,” explains Bunting.

fun horoscopes

Horoscopes ARIES

LIBRA

This is a day when unexpected things can happen, affecting your career or personal life. These are changing times, and it is good to be flexible.

Issues affecting home and security become acute again, and it is difficult to establish settled conditions. Some people cannot be relied on.

PISCES

Children or loved ones can be both demanding and unpredictable today, and it is best to set some limits and get them to abide by the rules.

Friends tend to be in a heavy mood today, as unexpected events shake things upi somewhat. You are not inclined to let other people limit you.

AQUARIUS You tend to withdraw into yourself today, searching for resources within. Disciplining your inner life and private time is a good idea.

CAPRICORN The Moon conjoins Pluto and later Venus in your sign, and your mood is both serious and determined in the face of unpredictable behavior from others.

SAGITTARIUS Surprises are in store today, especially on the economic front. There is no escaping some realities, but you would sure like to.

SCORPIO It is no fun to get into an argument with anyone today. People tend to be extreme and dogmatic, so keep your head below the parapet.

VIRGO

LEO There are heavy demands at work, and things are not quite as you expect. Try not to get involved in discussions of principle or ideology.

CANCER You may meet with obstructive people today, but you are not in the mood to be deflected from your dreams. Still, it is good to take them seriously.

GEMINI There may be some anxiety as unpredictable events can affect your emotional or economic security. Ignorepeople who believe in doomsday.

TAURUS Surprising facts can turn some of your preconceptions upside down, and there may be a lot of intellectual pressure on you today. Reject extremist views.
