THE TOOTHY MOOSE

Aurelia Carranza

Describe the atmosphere at Toothy Moose. Depends what night of the week you go. Friday’s are great for the country lovers and Saturdays are always bumping. What’s your fav item on the drink at Toothy Moose? I like drinking Coors Light or a gin and tonic. Then some ‘Burt Reynolds on Vacation’ shots! What is a must-have drink when coming to Toothy Moose? A nice cold Coors or Canadian beer… then jagerbombs haha if you weren’t bartending you’d be ....? Gaining field experience in research on invasive species in the Bahamas.

What fictional character best describes your personality? I’d say Ariel from the Little Mermaid. I’m quite fearless and adventurous… which tends to get me into trouble at times but also gets me places. if you could serve one celebrity who would it be? what would you serve them? I know he’s only vine famous but probably Marcus Johns. He’s hilarious and I love people with a sense of humor, best kind out there. Popular nights / happy hours to go to The Toothy Moose? Friday and Saturday nights are always packed with people. Special DJ’s provide awesome music keeping guests and staff happy all weekend! Come check it out if you haven’t already!

Paired Tastings is a new local food and beverage pairing company owned by two young and ambitious girls who want to share their passion and love for wine with Nova Scotians and their guests. Lara Bean and Mari Humeston started Paired Tastings a little over a month ago and have partnered with local companies in use of product to cross promote and support local. Both Bean and Humeston have been in the alcohol and hospitality industry for 10 years and the wine industry for a combined 14 years, “what can we say, we found what we love and stuck with it,” says Bean. Paired tastings offers a wide variety of pairing options using wine and/ or other premium alcohol products and local food. “We do our tastings anywhere from an in home intimate setting to corporate events,” explains Bean. Each tasting event is different, and can be customized to individual needs. However, at a typical event or tasting “guests can expect about 6 wines each paired with its own food from Ratinaud or the Golden Bakery as well as two hosts to educate and lead a fun filled evening. We can tailor tastings to the client’s specifications, so they can expect to get exactly what they want,” says Humeston. “We bring everything

Paired Tastings can be for anyone! They offer different packages, themes and vary by price. “We want our clients and their guests to be completely satisfied and can customize everything from the wine and food to the budget. We will work with clients to customize the perfect event,” says Humeston. They offer a wide range of themes for clients to choose from such as tastings centered around specific regions, to the usual known varietal or unusual varietals. They also offer Bachelor/Bachelorette party packages. “The possibilities are endless!” she continues.

Bean and Humeston love everything about wine from the culture andlimit one coupon per person winemaking process to the people and the endless options. “There is something for everyone! The way wine pairs with food, the way it makes you feel… wait, what don’t we love? We fell in love with wine a long time ago, can you tell?” jokes Bean. “Wine is fun!” Humeston exclaims. “Yes, we educate but we are focused on taking the pretentious stigma out of wine and put the fun back in. Wine was created to be social and pair with food, and that is what we are trying to get back to,” added Bean. Paired Tastings also organizes their own ticketed events so make sure you check their social media to keep informed! What are you waiting for? Visit a Farm – This year head down to Hatfield or Ross Farms and see all the newly born animals. Spring is all about new beginnings!

9

Walk and run – This year head to a deserted beach with your best friend or significant other. We all know once the summer hits these beaches will be packed-full with families! Take advantage of its quiet beauty.

8

Jump in puddles – Its spring in Halifax, which means rain and lots of it! Put on your rain boots and jump in puddles like you did as a kid.

7

Vacation – Plan your spring break vacation with family and friends and have the time of your life!

6

Bake – Make cookies and cupcakes and whip up some spring coloured icing like baby blue, pink and yellow. Make sure to share with all your friends!

5

Enjoy the rain – This year instead of dreading the spring rain, enjoy it! Lie in bed or sit on your porch and listen to the beautiful sounds of rain with a cup of tea.

4

Keep a lookout – With the spring rain and sun around this time of year you are bound to see a rainbow! Keep your camera close for that iconic shot. You never know, maybe this year you will see a double rainbow!

3

Listen to the birds – It’s this time of year you will wake up to the sound of birds chirping. Wake up early one morning and listen to their beautiful songs.

2

Open your windows – although it’s not yet summer, it’s time to air out your home from the winter! Enjoy the spring breezes and smells as they fill your house.

1

Shop –Time to take off your winter boots and buy some cute flats, a new umbrella and a bright coloured raincoat.
