Describe the atmosphere at The Argyle I feel the Argyle has two atmospheres; a laid back social environment where you can let loose but it can also be spot for a first date or family dinner depending on when you go. What’s your fav item on the drink menu at The Argyle? My favourite item on the drink menu is the twisted pink lemonade but I always love a good Caesar! If you weren’t bartending you’d be?Traveling for sure What fictional character best describes your personality? Kim Possible haha

What is a must-have drink at The Argyle? We have a great selection of craft beers to choose from; Bulldogs are also a must have drink on the Corona rooftop. If you could serve one celebrity who would it be and what would you serve them? I would serve Beyoncé anything she wants because she’s a queen Popular nights / happy hours to go to The Argyle? Thursday night rooftop patio is of course a big night but we also have live music Friday and Saturday during the day and DJ’s at night all summer long.

Traveling to Thailand and beyond with

Mathew Landry Local hairstylist Mathew Landry decided to tour the world to learn and teach the art of hair styling. Starting at a very young age, Mathew fell in love with hairstyling when he was six years old. It was one of those unforgettable moments for Mathew that left a lasting impression – he has now been in the hair industry for “16 fun years”. He describes the day and moment that he fell in love with his current profession. His father brought him to the local barber shop where he watch amazed as the barber took his big red cutting cape and wrapped it around his dad’s neck. After a quick 25 minutes of awe and stares “Lloyd, the barber picked me up and wrapped that big red

Why did you decide to tour the world? I wanted to learn and get out of my little bubble. I wanted to see and experience different cultures. My first trip was to Greece, after I travelled all over Asia. I was making new hairstyling friends and learning the art of cutting Asian hair… (by

cape around me and gave me the same cut like dad. He even straight blade shaved me. I was instantly hooked.” “This is the true 100 per cent reason I started doing hair. No bullshit no fluff. It started when I was six years old and I remember it like it was yesterday,” Mathew continues. “I remember running out the car at home and going through the house yelling ‘mom mom I know what I want to dooooo when im olderrrr’! She looked at me with a big smile and told me mathew, you know your dad was a hairdresser and that’s how it all began.” Mathew currently works at Totally Yours hair salon on Fenwick Street. He describes it

the way Asian hair is very different to cut then the normal hair you have in nova scotia” I had a lot to learn. After a year of traveling I finally mastered it. Now I’m back. Which countries did you go to? I lived in Thailand and while I was there and I travelled to Cambodia, Singapore, Hong Kong and a few all the little places in between.

has a “great atmosphere and an open concept feel. You can sit, get your hair done and have your dog relax with you. It’s a small family salon with a big city feel.” Now, 16 years later Mathew decided to get out of Halifax

Which county was your favourite? Thailand was amazing and opened my eyes to the difference there is across the world to the way we live here. One major difference is that if you own a salon in Thailand and one of your stylist calls in sick you pick up the phone and call another salon to send a stylist over to replace the other girl. Very different then the way salons are run here. Not as cut throat. It was really fun.

for a year and learn all about hairstyling in other countries. He set out on his journey last July and just came home last month, and what an impression this trip had made.

What did you learn on your trip? Patience, I learned to be patient and I became more forgiving to myself and others. When you travel and experience remote cultures and live life differently than the norm you see people with nothing! No food, no clothing and yet they are smiling at you eager to shake your hand and eager to learn anything. ill you do a trip like this again? Absolutely, travelling

is a part of who I am. My next adventure will either be Italy or South America. Traveling is good and healthy for the soul. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I see myself living in Spain doing hair and sippin’ on good wine and enjoying my life! What advice can you give to aspiring hair stylists? Always be consistent. Take a step back and see what it

Edible Matters

Great Offering a wide variety of rooms and experiential packages, located just minutes from the PEI ferry.

1345 Hammonds Plains Road

FamilyTime. Fun Time.

The delicious Edible Matters is a bakery, restaurant and catering business filled with fresh ingredients and located on the Hammonds Plains Rd where the area was in dire need of a restaurant! “The community was crying to have a restaurant,” says co-owner Ed Webber. Owners Matt and Ed Webber opened their doors in July of 2012 and employ just over 30 staff. They were awarded amongst the top three best new restaurants last year in the Coast Magazine and have been gaining praise and customers ever since! The idea behind the name Edible Matters came from one of their original chefs. “It kind of encompassed what we were trying to achieve in the area. I think the name works on multiple levels, including having our first names in it: Ed and Matt,” laughs Matt. Edible Matters stands out to everyone that walks in, from their helpful staff to their building design, “we made an effort to design an experience for the Hammonds Plains community. This starts with an atmosphere designed for upscale relaxation. We have a window into

our kitchen because we are proud to display the care, effort, and quality of our products to all of our patrons,” explains Matt.

Their menu is full of “wholesome food, and prepared with the finest quality ingredients. They are sourced locally whenever possible. We prepare food the old fashioned way, with next to no prepackaged items,” says Ed.

But it doesn’t stop there! Matt and Ed are hoping to open a local pub in the area due to the community’s continual requests! “We hope to soon have a local pub up and running in the area to add another piece to this puzzle,” says Ed. For fan-favourite bread, eggs benedict, fresh soups and so much more visit Edible Matters at 1345 Hammonds Plains Road, NS, B4B 1P6 and feel free to contact them at 902-4465588, info@ediblematters.com or on social media @ediblematters and Facebook.com/ediblematters
