healthy living
Healthy Living BY RICKY GOODALL
What is the best method of exercise for losing fat? In terms of losing fat exercise can be broken down into three basic categories; cardio, weight lifting and high intensity interval training (HIIT). For many years cardio training such as running or swimming has been believed to be the most effective method for fat burning but new research suggests otherwise. HIIT training, which consists of high output exercise in short bursts with short breaks has the biggest effect on burning fat with weight lifting being a close second. This is due to the hormonal response our body goes through from the exercise through a combination of glucose transporter hormones which become most present during this type of exercise and also from excess post-exercise oxygen
consumption or EPOC. These two hormonal processes keep our body burning calories for hours after exercise and also help us metabolize nutrients such as carbohydrates more efficiently to be stored in our muscle cells rather than fat. HIIT exercise programs are easy to find with a little research or you can consult a personal trainer for more information.

Are you currently touring? I’m always touring! The name of my tour is called ‘My Career’, and its been going on for 16 years! As a one man ‘group’, I can be on tour all the time and apply myself wherever I may be needed as long as I’m available.
Do you always tour alone or are you ever with other musicians or DJs? Yes, I’m mostly touring solo

Coming into junior high he joined the school band where he learned to play the Euphonium (a small tuba) under bandleader Gary Adams. This formal bit of training was all Skratch Bastid needed to know he had a strong connection with music, “although I played basketball in high school I really integrated with the local hip hop scene with Buck 65 and Sixtoo. I started to make some strong hip hop ties,” says Skratch.

What advice would you give to beginners who are just starting out? Practice, practice, practice. Share. Have fun and be a part of the party.
Who are your favourite DJs? Jazzy Jeff, Cosmo Baker, Kid Koala, David Rodigan. There are so many!
What has been your favourite tour? I am the global ambassador for the Red Bull Thre3Style DJ Competition, and this past November Toronto hosted the 4th annual World Finals. It was one week of pure inspiration: from legends in the game, to up and coming DJs from around the world. It’s a great event to be a part of, year in, year out.
If you weren’t DJing what do you think you would be doing?
Who were your early influences? Buck 65, Mix Master

healthy career has challenges but you just need to overcome them. My challenge is educating people on the art and craft of proper DJing in a field with many cheaper solutions. It’s important that people understand the value of a DJ.
What do you usually start with when preparing for a set? I think of my crowd and I envision what the crowd will be like and based on my experiences. I might start with what worked previously and make my set based on what I used then combined with music that has come up since then or new ideas that I’ve developed.
How do you handle mistakes during a set? Keep it moving.
What is the best part about being a DJ? I would say sharing

Skratch Bastid is the Global Ambassador and judge for the Red Bull Freestyle Competition while playing 100 plus shows a year and promoting his very own series of barbeques. The question remains – will these shows hit the road and arrive in Halifax this year? Keep your nose to the air!

GEMINI The focus is on relationships and travel to meet friends or lovers. Rules are important, but you may want to break them.
SCORPIO
This is an exciting if rather edgy day, when there is a lot of enthusiasm about the future. Unpredictable journeys are on the agenda.
You may need to draw on your inner resources to deal with the conversation today, as some people can be inordinately provocative.

AQUARIUS This could be a quiet New Year’s Eve, not least because those you are close to need time to make big changes. There is a lot of mutual support.
VIRGO This is a good day for an exciting family shopping expedition. If you have kids, there is an atmosphere of excitement. Rules are made to be broken.
