spor If you haven’t already been, you’ve probably heard about the newly opened Senate Sports Tavern & Eatery. The new sports bar has a real local feel and offers an authentic experience on sports and pub fare. This past week we stopped by the Tavern to see what all the hype is about at this new local hotspot. Here’s our interview with Steve Ryan one of the partners at The Senate:

When someone walks through our doors they are hit with a laid back, warm feel. We care about what we represent and we want our customers to see that.

facesmagazine.ca august 2007 May 2013 | facesmagazine.ca

What made you and your partners decide to open the Senate Sports Tavern & Eatery? Besides being an athlete, I think it’s safe to say any guy that loves sports dreams of opening a sports bar. For us it seemed as though we were constantly settling or going somewhere that wasn’t an actual sports bar when we wanted to take in a game and although the landscape has changed over the past few months my friends and I always found it surprising at the lack of choice when going out to watch a game downtown. Johnny, Rob and myself have talked about something like this for years and when the opportunity presented itself we couldn’t resist. We have never felt that Ottawa sports fans had a place to call home - this is what we set out to achieve and we hope people see that. How did you come up with your name? That one was all Josee. We were bouncing

around a couple different options and this one just seemed to fit. It was important to us that it had an Ottawa feel and this felt right with the sports and political touch. What is unique about this sports bar, why would someone come here over

any other bar? We are an authentic Canadian sports tavern. We don’t want to be just another sports bar with a bunch of TVs. Anyone can buy some sports pictures, hang them and open a sports bar. When someone walks through our doors

they are hit with a laid back, warm feel. We care about what we represent and we want our customers to see that. We feel we have put together something truly unique, something that makes a statement and makes it known that this is an Ottawa sports bar rich with sports culture. From Spezza’s 200th goal stick to Val Belchers game-used Rough Riders helmet donated by his son Layne there are little pieces of sports influence everywhere you look. Speaking of TVs it looks like you have that covered pretty well? You could say that – We have twelve 50’’ screens inside and two outside all with dedicated digital boxes. This allows us to offer a different game on each screen which is great for those busy game nights. Nothing is worse than when you go somewhere and you’re told you can’t get what you’re looking for because it is connected to another TV across the bar. What should people expect when it comes to food? We take great pride in our menu. It was important to us to offer good food all the while providing exceptional value. All items on our menu, with the exception of the steak dinner and duck confit, are $14 and under. We offer classic pub fare with a focus on sandwiches and burgers but with items like the turducken and the quinoa salad there is a little something for

everyone! What do you have planned for the summer? This summer should be super exciting! We just released our daily specials that will run throughout the summer. We have $2.50 Spice box shots on Mondays, Tavern Tuesdays ($7 Domestic quarts), Mini Pitchers on Wednesdays, $11 burgers on Fridays as well as two steak dinners and a bottle of wine for $50. We also have 1/2 priced wings on Sunday. Do you have a patio? Yeah! Not only do we have a front patio but a side patio that’s set up with a backyard feel and seats up to 50 people. It has two 50’’ screen TVs which makes for a sweet spot to watch any game! Do you have anything else planned for the future that you’d like to mention? We’re planning a whole lot of fun events. Aside from running a shuttle to all Sens games (including the playoffs), we will be running NFL road trips this year, a Ball Hockey Tournament in August as well as our 1st annual golf tournament. For more information on these upcoming events you can like them on facebook, follow them on Twitter @thesenatetavern or visit them at www.thesenate.ca

Izakaya

Izakaya | 339 Elgin St. Tell us about the atmosphere at Izakaya. Izakaya combines a fun and vibrant atmosphere with a very cozy and approachable setting. Our friendly, professional servers along with our mouthwatering menu create a dining experience that won’t be forgotten. On weekends, we have a DJ to kickstart your evening with a dynamic lounge ambiance. What are some of the “must haves”? Some of our signature dishes include the Slaw for 2, which has over twenty different fresh ingredients such as cabbage, cucumber, mango, red pepper, fried wanton noodles and a kimchi vinaigrette... our Pumpkin Soup, as well as our Tamarind Braised Shortrib dish that just melts in your mouth. Neil Gowe, our Somellier, has created a tongue-tickling cocktail list for the summer. My favourites are the Thai-One-On and the Tiki Dreams for Two - it comes with two straws and an umbrella! Our $10 Bar Rail Triples are also very popular!! What special events are coming

up at Izakaya? We are hosting our third BONZAI BRUNCH on Sunday May 26th. The idea is to enjoy a delectable brunch to get over your Saturday night, and then turn it into a party that takes you straight into Sunday evening. It is an event that happens once a month and is a party you do not want to miss. It includes a delicious, quality brunch, welcome cocktail, DJ, ceasar bar, bottle deals and much more. To join in on the fun, be sure to book your tables in advance by calling 613-797-7667. Will surely fill up quickly again.

Chloe Furness Slice & Co. | The Senate Tell us about the different atmospheres where you serve? I work at Slice and Co. as well as The Senate, two of Ottawa’s newest eateries. While Slice & Co. oozes a very modern yet fun vibe to the world of pizzerias, The Senate offers sport fanatics a very exciting and loyal experience as the sirens go off every time our Senators “shoot and score”! The combination of food and service are outstanding at both locations, accompanied with delicious twists. Each venue shares a promise of an ambiance that is unique, casual and exudes nothing less than a warm feel.

salutation I’d probably say “Did we just become best friends?!” What is something interesting most people don’t know about you? I’ve been drawn to sharks for quite some time. They’re literally the most amazing and mysterious animals on earth. The oceanic white tip shark was once the most prolific animal on our planet. Unfortunately its populations have been decimated by over 99%. I look forward to being blessed with the opportunity to dive with the one animal we fear the most, yet cannot live without.

shop

Tell us something we don’t know about Izakaya? The name “Izakaya” is a compounded Japanese term consisting of “i” (to stay) and “sakaya” (sake shop). In traditional Izakaya’s food is ordered slowly over several courses rather than all at once. Delicately flavoured dishes such as sushi or edamame are ordered first followed with progressively more robust flavours such as yakatori or karage, finishing the meal with a rice or noodle dish to fully satisfy the diner.

If you weren’t serving, what would you be doing? The universe in which creativity resides has always enticed me with boundless enthusiasm. I’d jump into the broad and beautiful world of photography. Whether it’s wildlife, marine, fashion, abstract, or boudoir, photography has always been one of my greatest passions.

sports

Izakaya is our interpretation of this tradition. Coupled with our collective passion for food, wine, cocktails and entertainment, Izakaya is a collection of sensory pleasures.

If you could serve for one celebrity who would it be? What would it be? Hands down, Will Ferrell. The world of comedy would clearly not be the same without him and his ability to say anything and make it so damn hilarious. From Step Brothers to Anchorman, or even Zoolander and his countless appearances on Saturday Night Live, there’s no better curly-headed comedic genius. I would have served him on the set of the new Anchorman sequel, hoping to catch a glimpse of the legend that continues. Then for the final

What fictional character best describes your personality? Since I love driving so much, Herbie would probably describe me best. Minor alterations are never a bad thing, so I’d substitute the Beetle with an Aventador LP700-4 and obviously ditch Lindsay Lohan for let’s say, Danica Patrick. Now we’re talking.

The month begins with some difficulties - perhaps there is an acute problem that needs solving, perhaps one is just too negative about things.

TAURUS APR 20 - MAY 20 Ambitions are in the spotlight and some adjustments to your plan may need to be made. You can look forward to a cozy time after the month’s efforts.

GEMINI MAY 21 - JUN 21 There is a need for a bit of peace and quiet to focus on private matters. It helps to share any worries with someone who cares.

CANCER JUN 22 - JUL 22 Someone close to you experiences some heavy challenges and the atmosphere can be a bit pressured. It is good to give practical assistance.

LEO JUL 23 - AUG 22 At work people may not be very tolerant and it helps to draw a line in the sand. Self-assertion helps the process and wins respect.

VIRGO AUG 23 - SEP 22 Creative tasks and matters connected with children can try your patience and test your ability to make rapid decisions. You reach an understanding.

With considerable stress in the air there is a need to stay grounded and cool. Everything will get solved in the end and you can move on.

Name: Darcy Profession: Physiotherapist Age: My favourite type of music is ‘80s Brit Pop. That is all that I will say. What are you training for? I am currently signed up for a MST 10K race in Kelowna this May, and signed up for the Spartan Trifecta (Sprint, Super and Beast). Although I love my husband and we have a fab relationship a primary motivator is to kick his a$$ during the Spartan Sprint...he is an athletic, 6’3” beast. I want to be able to get up that rope, scale the walls and outrun him. I love you Babe! What were you expecting when you signed up with Coach Styles? I knew it was outdoor training and spartan inspired... I was expecting the sessions not to be your gym rat/road racing training, but to challenge my endurance/strength/stamina/agility/speed/balance, to be pushed out of my comfort zone, to be sore and tired and to feel strong and awesome once it was over. Rest assured I got what I was expecting.

sports How Long have you been training with pit.net? Since Oct, 2012 What is a typical session like with Coach Styles? Classic hate/love relationship. None of it is particularly enjoyable at the moment. There is always a variation of burpees (never for less than a minute), cardio (anaerobic pace), lunges, strength training (more intense than I ever thought I could achieve). If there is a hill, I will sprint/hop it...repeatedly...with a sand bag or a 40lb weight vest. Oh, and there is the Abs from Hell...appropriately named.

That sounds scary, What keeps you coming back? Because I am so much stronger than I imagined. I really love going out of my comfort zone - it is truly where the magic happens. So often Coach has presented a challenge to me, and my first response was, “I don’t think I can do it.” THE MOST AMAZING FEELING is when I go beyond my own mental limits. Race season has not started, but I am so much faster during my training runs and so much stronger. And there is that thing about wanting to cross the finish line before my husband. And who doesn’t want to find her inner Beast? Would you recommend Coach Styles and his training with Pit.net to your friends, co-workers and family? As a busy working mom who has so many obligations in a single day/week, it was a challenge to find time to train. Coach Styles is mobile and will come to you and will find a time that fits your schedule. Two huge barriers to fitness eliminated. He will have you working harder than you ever imagined. He will have you doing things you never thought you would ever do. He will have you stronger and faster than you ever imagined. He will have you looking fitter than you ever imagined. I recommend him to anyone who wants to experience any/all these things.
