Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

A symbol is a formal representation which refers to a certain dynamic object. In the sign, the relationship between the form and content could be arbitrary and immaterial. As opposed, diagram does not represent dynamic objects nor the metric and geometric quality of the construct. It rather describes the spatial correlation and time dimension to the architecture in a precise, simplistic, and defined way. Diagram is a type of operative graph that helps understand the dimension relationship between the space of graph and the concrete space.

<complete render vie>

It is conceived as a series of undulating lines constituting bands and forming part of the structure that is reminiscent of a contour drawing. The new Summer House is organized as four bands of structure beginning with a bench level attached to the ground, a second band of three C-shaped walls crowned by a third and fourth level which forms a roof that cantilevers a tree-like canopy over the smaller footprint.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

Locating in a mountainside of London, Barkow Leibinger’s experimental architecture Serpentine Summer House provides natural, recreational space for family and visitors. In a rather small human scale, the building connects better with the user by setting all the sitting area in separated arcs outwardly facing, offering various panoramic views of the park. Reciprocally, different views of the pavilion are shown to visitors from all sides. This naturally forms multiple entrance and by visually connecting users from outside and inside, the spatial condition blurs and make it a warmly welcoming space.

Week Two

Isometric

Insert title of your Isometric here. In this isometric, generic white matte material is employed in the rendering process, cast with warm yellow light and contrasting cold tone shadow, to accentuate the organic form. In order to emphasize its fluidity quality of plywood material, various line weights are used in different spatial intersection. For example, thicker line weight is used to show the profile of the plywood board to show its undulating lines constituting bands. There are absolute boundaries and implied threshold created by the roof structure creating a gradient of thresholds. Also, some informal functional area such as the semiprivate space enclosed by two division wall offers sound and visual barrier with the exterior world. The purpose of the space is in a quite explicit manner. Circulation of this pavilion is rather a direct one, because of the similarity of each functional spaces, visitors would choose to either stay in one spot or wander around the pavilion in the exterior space. The key concept of the precedent study is about the logic of generating a structure from loops of ribbons, or just as simple as coiling paper bands in your hands round and round then stacking the material upon itself. The architect discovers this interesting paper folding technique and magnified it into an architecture construct. In terms of the materials itself, the Summer House is constructed with plywood skin on a steel tube frame, materials intrinsically in harmony with the looping geometry of the structure.

Week Two Diagrams

Circulation Diagram

Threshold (Permibility)

The middle level shows the circulation range which is radially outwards.

The threshold is defined by how much of the user are in contact with the building illustrated by the gradient of color. Absolute boundary and implicit boudary are also taking into account.

The lower level shows the overlapping circulation paths which are majorly coming from one direction.

6

Appendix

Process

1. Tracing out the middle guide line based on the given architectural drawing.

2. To make sure the seats and bench supports are seamlessly connected, I dulplicated the bench line and redivided them using arches.

3. Putting curves in the right height level.

4. Adjusting each control points to line up the guide lines with four elevation drawing. (It was found that the original elevations are contradictory, so I used assumption to place these guide lines.)

7

Appendix Process

5. Completed guide curves in isometric view. For the overhanging roof, I mannualy calculated the width of the bands and displaced the curves in respective location.

6. Lofting surface bewteen two curves.

7. Completed surface in isometric view.

8. Using “Offset command, different thicknesss are applied to each components of the pavillions

8

Appendix

Process

9. Triming the intersecting volumes of the seats and bench.

10. Setting lights for render according to the local climate.

Plan view for threshold diagram in relation to the architecture.

Plan view of the circulation diagram in relation to the architecture.
