WEEK 9 READING: TITLE OF READING

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) Durer’s rules define perspectival projection as “a planar, transparent intersection of all those rays that fall from the eye onto the object it sees“. It defines that all perpenduculars meet at the central vanishing point and parallels in any directions share a vanishing points. In addition, the vanishing point lies on the horizontal lines if parallels are on the same horizontal plane.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

Homegenous space is a mathematical idea of metric space of Euclidean geometry, it is fully rational, infinite and static. It is a space “ produced by construction“ and it is seen by a “single and immobile eye“. It is contrasted against visual and tactical space.

I duplicated and rotated the old-quad to indicate the grid-like structure in this infinite world. They are all highly intertextured and each cell (old-quad) represents a subspace of the just / unjust world with a justise scale from 0 to 1.

All the movement and timeline are parallel to highlight the rigid and systematic ruling way of this world. Although the whole world spans infinitely in three dimensions, each cell (old-quad) is confined in its own thresholds as a loop.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 Symmetry is always regarded as a symbol of perfection in classical art painting. Here, I used symmetry to indicate that this is a seemingly just world. Windows are remained unseen in this perspective, and so does the tunnel to another world. By only leaving the presence of window frame, the idea of “hidden cities“ is conveyed. The lighting is sourced from a distant vanishing point, drawing the audience attention to the depth of field. In this perspective, human activity becomes subordinated to the construct of architecture.

In this scene, all the windows are fully observable allowing to showcase more characters’ interactions as well as part of the world behind. I kept the symmetry from perspective 1 to make a connection of two scene. The lightings remain unchanged because I really like its dramatic effect, but the overall brightness will be adjusted in later stages to render different tensions. This is not a conventional composition. I tried to simulate a dynamic scene with a mobile viewer.

6

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2 The background image is symmetrical in a horizontal plane. The repetition of columns elements is designed to lead the audience to image infinite old-quad behind this scene. All the light beams are emitted from the centre of the scene, again accentuating the symmetry. The traffic is hinted at by the presence of old style elevator and train, this will also be the platform that Macro Polo is standing on to view the world. I depicted Trial of Phryne in the middle of the field -- Phryne the defendant has to reveal her body to be acquitted of a charge. This reflects the flaws in the ancient law systems just as the world has absolute just and unjust side. A minor character from the “unjust“ world in the left corner, his presence connects two scenes together. In this world, there is no notion of time. A woman dressed in a more contemporary style is about to get on board of the train indicating that she is a spacetime traveller from a distant cell. A serpent is placed in the front ground as a symbol of lust.

Most of the painting is from the theme of Divine Comedy. I really like the figures in the collection of painting as they depict the most fundamental human nature, which in my opinion is just beastliness. All humans are naked because they returned to the brute state of barbarism. Just and unjust parties fight together to win the autonomy of this world. I centred my characters around windows to produce a tight composition and to show the high relevance bewteen the present world and neighbor worlds. Then I filled the space with fire to show the fierce contest, also it can be interpretated as hell-fire. By glancing into the window, piles of dead bodies and body parts are shown in the shade, this is a sarcasm device to express that all will reach the same end despite their virtue or clanger. A man is lean on the window as there is a emgering war as well.

WEEK 4 READING: TITLE OF READING Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: IWhat is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) Autographic practices are those that “depend for their authenticity upon the direct contact of the author“, whereas allographic practices “exist on many copies and can be produced without the direct intervention of the author“. The latter is subject to the change in their representation, due to the variations in understanding and interpreting notations. For example, paintings are autographic and musics are allographic.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) Because the establishing representational techniques are incapable of reflecting the technological tranformation of the society, as it was designed to capture stable and fixed objects.

FINAL DRAWINGS Hidden Cities 5: BereniCe Zhuohui (Joyce) Huang, 870604

They say Italo Calvino never describes a pictorial city to the reader, instant, he constructed a field letting the reader fill the gaps between literature with their imagination based on their experiences.
