HOW TO WASH YOUR HAIR PROPERLY Hair washing is confusing. We grew up being taught to wash it every day, and then later we learned you should probably only be sudsing up a couple times a week—and, to be honest, we’re still pretty confused about how to wash your hair correctly when it comes to the actual process of cleansing (the “no ‘poo method” floating around the 22 JOY FEELINGS!
internet certainly isn’t helping things). Using the correct techniques can make a world of difference in your hair’s health, bounce and shine—but if you’re making some common mistakes, you could be damaging your lovely locks without even realizing it.
1. Start with a rinse Just like your laundry needs a rinse cycle before you add detergent, hair should be thoroughly wet before you add your shampoo. “Hot water will open the cuticle, which is good for removing any dirt or product trapped in the hair,” says White. Another bonus: “When your hair is rinsed in warm water, it loosens the oils through the scalp and opens the cuticle so it is able to absorb the oil” in your conditioner, says Saviano. 2. If you have long hair, condition first 23 JOY FEELINGS!
Yes, really! “If you have hair beneath the shoulders, protect fragile ends from drying out and further damage by running a small amount of conditioner through them and lightly rinsing, before any shampooing. This will not only keep ends healthy, it will fill any holes in the cuticle with moisture, making it smoother and boosting shine,” says White. 3. Lather up — but only at the scalp “You only need to shampoo the hair at the scalp, particularly at the nape,” Saviano says. White agrees. “The best way to lather up is from roots to ends. The hair closest to the scalp is the youngest and will
inevitably be the oiliest, while the end of the hair is the oldest and usually driest, most fragile part of the hair.” Don’t use more shampoo than you need; both Saviano and White say that a quarter-sized amount of shampoo is enough. If your hair is particularly long or thick, go ahead and double that. 4. Be gentle! Friction can permanently damage your hair’s cuticle, leading to breakage and frizz. Think about washing your hair like you hand wash your delicates — very carefully. “Start your lather at the roots,” says White. “Increase blood flow to 24 JOY FEELINGS!
the scalp and stimulate hair growth by using vertical strokes with medium pressure.” Don’t use circular motions, which can tangle your hair. Next, “Smooth the lather over the ends in a straight stroking motion,” White advises. “Do not scrub the fragile ends or use a back and forth motion like you’re washing a rag on a washboard.” 5. Don’t rinse and repeat Despite what the instructions on the back of your shampoo bottle may say, there’s no need to wash your hair twice. “Avoid stripping the hair by doing one shampoo only, which is usually sufficient,” says White.
“Unless the hair is extremely dirty and the first shampoo didn’t produce a lather.” In that case, go ahead and lather up one more time. 6. Add conditioner from the mid-lengths to the tips After you’ve rinsed out your shampoo, “squeeze some of the water out of the hair before you put in the conditioner,” says Saviano. “Then clip your hair up and finish showering, leaving the conditioner rinse out for the final step of your shower.” The longer the conditioner stays on your hair, the better it absorbs. Don’t put conditioner at the roots of your hair; the natural oil from your scalp is more concentrated there. 25 JOY FEELINGS!
7. Finish with a cold water rinse “Cold water will shut the cuticle tight, sealing the shingle-like outer layer, which will cause it to reflect the most light and give off the most shine,” says White. More Hair Washing Tips… Use a shampoo and conditioner that’s made for your hair type. If your hair is dry, choose moisturizing products. If you color your hair, opt for color-safe formulas. “Volumizing” shampoos tend to leave hair drier, so they’re best for fine hair types that would be weighed down by more moisturizing products.
How often you wash your hair depends on your hair type, too. If you have oily or fine hair, you may need to shampoo daily. Normal or dry hair can lather up closer to three times a week. Filter your water. White recommends using a
shower filter, such as the T3 Source Showerhead, since it “removes rust and minerals from water that can dull color, and deposit on blondes making them dark and muddy.” (We’ve tried it, and it also made our hair super soft.)

YOU CAN LIVE A LONGER, FULLER LIFE WITH CANCER – HERE’S HOW
Being diagnosed with lung cancer (or any cancer) is a life-altering experience – one that can leave you feeling helpless and powerless. Yes, your doctor met with you and recommended a course of treatment, but for most people, that particular visit 30 JOY FEELINGS!
is a blur that leaves many questions unanswered. One question I often hear is, “What can I do to help myself fight this cancer?” This question, this essential human need to take control and not simply let cancer do what
it pleases to your body, is rarely addressed by physicians. What’s even worse is it may be dismissed as irrelevant. I believe this desire to do something is critical to patients, and they often turn to the internet for answers – exactly like you’re doing now as you read this story. You can find good, evidence-based advice online, but you can also find bad and even harmful advice as opportunists and charlatans try to take advantage of patients’ hopes and fears. When patients ask me what they can do, I share the following advice. 31 JOY FEELINGS!
1. If you continue to smoke cigarettes, you should stop Studies show that continuing to smoke after a lung cancer diagnosis significantly reduces your chances of being cured and increases the risk of both your current cancer returning and of developing a second new cancer. Even patients with advanced, incurable cancer have been proven to live longer if they quit. If you struggle to quit, as many people do, ask your doctor for help with medications and counseling.
2. Keep living your normal life Many patients, when confronted with a new cancer diagnosis, start to redefine themselves as a “cancer patient instead of the individual they once were, who happens to have cancer. They spend much of their free time dwelling on their diagnosis and searching for every possible treatment, reasonable or unreasonable, sometimes flying from place to place getting different opinions (one second opinion is often a good idea; more than two is typically not). Although it’s easier said than done, in my 32 JOY FEELINGS!
experience, the patients who have the best quality of life while living with cancer remain the person they were before the diagnosis. They approach cancer as just one more thing to deal with. That vacation you always wanted or regular visits with your grandchildren are more important than making every chemo visit right on schedule. 3. Exercise Evidence clearly shows that regular exercise improves quality of life, tolerance of treatment side effects and mood, and can even help some cancer patients live longer.
You don’t have to train for a marathon, but some form of physical activity most days of the week can make a big impact: walking, biking, swimming or whatever you enjoy. This is the best single thing you can do to improve your life with cancer! What to avoid I can boil my advice on diets, herbal supplements, vitamins and most other “alternative medicines” into one sentence: No reliable study has ever shown a vitamin, diet or supplement to be effective in helping cancer patients live longer.
33 JOY FEELINGS!
So what’s the harm in trying? These interventions can be expensive and even potentially detrimental. For example, studies show that high doses of vitamins A or E, given to help prevent lung cancer in patients at high risk, actually caused higher rates of lung cancer. If you do choose to try something new, learn about it from a reliable source, like a reputable cancer center’s website, and be sure to tell your doctor. medical experts at
Cleveland Clinic.
USING A SURROGATE MOTHER: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW There's still some controversy about using a surrogate mother to have a baby. The legal process is also tricky because it varies from state to state. Even so, whether it's because of fertility problems or other reasons, surrogacy is an option for you and your partner. Find out how it works and see if it's right for you.
WHAT IS A SURROGATE MOTHER? 34 JOY FEELINGS!
There are two kinds:
Traditional surrogate. It's a woman who gets artificially inseminated with the father's sperm. She then carries the baby and delivers it for you and your partner to raise.
A traditional surrogate is the baby's biological mother. That's because it was her egg that was fertilized by the father's
sperm. Donor sperm can also be used.
Gestational surrogates. A technique called "in vitro fertilization" (IVF) now makes it possible to gather eggs from the mother, fertilize them with sperm from the father, and place the embryo into the uterus of a gestational surrogate.
The surrogate then carries the baby until birth. She doesn't have any genetic ties to the child because it wasn't her egg that was used.
A gestational surrogate is called the "birth mother." 35 JOY FEELINGS!
The biological mother, though, is still the woman whose egg was fertilized.
In the U.S., gestational surrogacy is less complex legally. That's because both intended parents have genetic ties to the baby. As a result, gestational surrogacy has become more common than a traditional surrogate. About 750 babies are born each year using gestational surrogacy.
WHO USES SURROGATES?
If you're a woman, you may consider a surrogate for several reasons:
Medical problems with your uterus You had a hysterectomy that removed your uterus Conditions that make pregnancy impossible or risky for you, such as severe heart disease You may want to think about surrogacy if you tried but couldn't get pregnant with a variety of assisted-reproduction techniques, such as IVF.
Surrogates have also made parenthood an option for 36 JOY FEELINGS!
people who might not be able to adopt a child, perhaps because of their age or marital status.
If gay men decide to use a traditional surrogate, one of them uses his sperm to fertilize the surrogate's egg through artificial insemination. The surrogate then carries the baby and gives birth.
A gay couple might also choose an egg donor, fertilize that donated egg, and then have the embryo implanted in a gestational surrogate to carry until birth.
FINDING A SURROGATE
There are several ways you can find a surrogate mother:
Friends or family. Sometimes you can ask a friend or relative to be a surrogate for you. It's somewhat controversial. But because of the high cost of surrogacy and the complex legal issues it raises about parental rights, a tried-and-tested family relationship can be simpler to manage.
37 JOY FEELINGS!
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine accepts certain family ties as acceptable for surrogates. It generally discourages surrogacy, though, if the child would carry the same genes as a child born of incest between close relatives.
A surrogacy agency. Most people use one to arrange a gestational surrogate. There are about 100 agencies now operating in the U.S. They act as gobetweens.
An agency helps you find a surrogate and make arrangements. It also collects any fees that get
passed between you and the surrogate, such as paying for her medical expenses.
HOW TO CHOOSE A SURROGATE
Right now there aren't any regulations about who can be a surrogate mother. But experts agree on a few points about how to select one.
YOU SHOULD CHOOSE A SURROGATE WHO:
so she understands firsthand the medical risks of pregnancy and childbirth and the emotional issues of bonding with a newborn Has passed a psychological screening by a mental health professional to uncover any issues with giving up the baby after birth Signs a contract about her role and responsibilities in the pregnancy, such as prenatal care and agreeing to give you the baby after birth USING A SURROGATE
Is at least 21 years old Has already given birth to at least one healthy baby 38 JOY FEELINGS!
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine
says a surrogate should get a medical exam to check that she's likely to have a healthy, full-term pregnancy. The organization suggests she gets tests that check for infectious diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV, cytomegalovirus, and hepatitis B and C.
Surrogates should get tests to make sure they have immunity to measles, rubella (German measles), and chickenpox. Also, you may want to ask that she get a medical procedure to visually "map" the uterus, which can help the doctor check her potential to 39 JOY FEELINGS!
carry a pregnancy. A surrogate mother should have her own doctor during pregnancy rather than use yours.
The cost of surrogacy can range from $80,000 to $120,000. A lot of different things go into the price, such as whether the surrogate has her own medical insurance or whether you need to buy a surrogacy-pregnancy policy for her.
LEGAL ISSUES WITH SURROGATES
Parental rights aren't guaranteed after a surrogate pregnancy. The law continues to change as reproductive technology and the very definition of a "parent" changes.
There isn't a federal law on surrogacy and state laws vary. After a surrogate pregnancy in some states, you may still have to pass adoption proceedings to gain legal custody of the child. In other states, a "declaration of parentage" before birth lets you avoid having to "adopt" the baby.
40 JOY FEELINGS!
To protect your rights as parents-to-be -- and the rights of the child you're hoping to have -- hire an attorney who specializes in reproductive law in your state. He can write a surrogacy contract that clearly spells out what everyone needs to do.
A contract like that may help if legal issues come up after birth. It can also outline agreements about a variety of possible scenarios with the pregnancy, such as what happens if there are twins or triplets.

The key behind great first date and have fun! date ideas is to enjoy your 20 HOT SEX IDEAS TO BLOW YOUR LOVER’S MIND
While communicating with each other sexually is the first step to exploring your sexuality, there are other ways to make sex exciting and heart pounding all over again. Just use these 20 hot sex ideas in bed and you’ll definitely work your magic in your lover’s loins!
Dress up for sex. You may be used to getting into bed naked or in something minimal and unsexy. But looking good in bed is 44 JOY FEELINGS!
actually more important than looking good while stepping out of the house.
Don’t take your partner for granted and assume they can be switched on like a light bulb. Dress sexy and smell great when you slip into the sheets. Just watching you will arouse your partner, and they’ll have a hard time keeping their hands off you. Bring your favorite toys. Using toys in bed is nothing to be ashamed of
or embarrassed about. Sex toys have evolved a long way and they can be a lot of fun for both of you. And if orgasms galore isn’t enough of an excuse, sex toys can even help bring out a few secret desires too!
Talk dirty. Use dirty words in bed to express just how you feel. It may seem crude or awkward to begin with, but once you’re on a roll, dirty talking will only arouse both of you a lot more. Create a sexy alter ego. Do you have a secret crush on any cartoon or anime character? Or perhaps, you find a 45 JOY FEELINGS!
particular profession like a fireman or an air hostess sexy? Pick up sexy costumes that you know will definitely turn your partner on, and walk into the bedroom wearing it.
Role playing in bed and dressing up as different characters is a great way to bring fantasies to life. And it can also be a lot of fun because both of you can pretend to be characters that are different from your own real selves.
The sexy sounds. When you generally have sex with each other, how can you tell if your lover’s
having a good time? One of the easiest ways is when you hear them gasp or moan. And hearing your partner gasping always turns you on and excites you a lot more, doesn’t it?
When you’re having sex with each other, feel comfortable enough to moan and gasp loudly. Breathe into each other’s ears and arouse each other with words.
Dirty fetishes. All of us have a few secret fetishes we enjoy, even though we don’t talk about it. For some people, it’s a particular sexual act like 46 JOY FEELINGS!
spanking, for others it’s a particular part of the body like the foot, and for a few others, it’s voyeurism or tearing clothes.
A fetish is unique and to each their own, and all of us have a few even if we don’t realize it yet. Talk about fetishes that excite either of you and try to incorporate these fetishes, however small they may be, into your sex lives. And your lover will surely be grateful to know that they’re not the only one who has dirty secret thoughts running on their mind while having sex.
Raw aggressive sex. Slow, passionate sex is a romantic union of two lovers. But sometimes, too much of a good thing can be boring too. To beat the monotony, indulge in wild rough sex now and then. Slap each other, claw each other, tear clothes off or bite each other until it hurts.
It may seem funny the first time you slap your partner, but the very second you slap them or hit them, you’ll feel a sexy rush flow through your loins. Try it, you’ll know what we mean! A new position. This is so simple you’d wonder why 47 JOY FEELINGS!
we’re even mentioning it. But when was the last time you tried something new in bed? Most of us get so comfortable with the routine that we forget to try new things every now and then. And if you’re worried you’ll go limp trying new positions all the time, start with something simple and work your way up. Drunk sex. Go to a party together, have a few drinks and get naughty on the dance floor. Just grinding against each other in the crowd would give you a sexual high. But that’s not all.
When you get back home, watch a movie together *preferably porn*, have several more drinks until both of you are really tipsy, and then get into bed together. The sexual rush of the party and the high of the booze will create a whole new sexual high while having sex when you’re drunk. Try a new place. Staring at the same view from the bed can get pretty boring. Try something new now and then. For starters, car sex is a great way to kickstart the sexy rush, even if it’s parked in the garage Mutual masturbation. You don’t always have to 48 JOY FEELINGS!
have sex to have a hot and steamy time together. Slip into bed, play a porn movie or read an erotic story together and let your hands wander all over your partner. You don’t need to have sex, just arouse each other and masturbate each other till the orgasms come.
A controlling lover. Take turns to control the sex now and then. It can be really sexy when only one partner takes complete control and orders the other partner to do their bidding in bed. And if you want to try something more unique, one partner can take complete control
of the sex while the other partner pretends to be deep in their sleep.
Public display of affection. You don’t need to flash someone or have sex in public to get your jollies up. As it’s the fear of getting caught that gives both of you a sexy adrenalin rush while making out in public, try to recreate the setting at home. [Read: 3 sexy real life public flashing confessions]
Have sex near the windows so you can see the world outside, but they can’t see you. Or give your partner a blow job in 49 JOY FEELINGS!
the car, even if it’s parked in your own place. Get innovative and try something new so you can feel the fear and the thrill of public affection at the same time. Visual pleasures. Having sex is fun. But you know what’s more fun? Watching yourself have sex! Place a full length mirror horizontally against the bed while having sex. And if you want to get kinkier, have sex really close to the mirror so it feels like both of you are having sex while being watched by the both of you!
You can also record yourselves having sex and stream it live, or watch porn together while having sex too.
Vacation sex. Are you looking for something a lot more sexy and adventurous? Head out on a vacation to a sunny destination, and have the wildest and sexiest time together. Don’t make sex a routine. To most of us, sex starts off exciting, but eventually turns into a routine. If you want sex to stay hot and steamy, avoid having sex at the same time all the time. If sex is
50 JOY FEELINGS!
a falling-asleep ritual, change the timings.
Now and then, when you wake up in the middle of the night to pee, slip back under the covers and run your hands all over your partner *like a sexy stranger* until they feel aroused. Try to have sex at random times and odd hours, and sex will feel more like an exciting activity than a regular chore. Aural pleasure. Playing the right songs in the background while having sex can do wonders to your sex life. The perfect song can give you a sexual high, and make sex feel
more passionate. And if you want to increase the aural pleasure, you can dim the lights and just move your bodies to the rhythm of the songs. Try it once, you may even get addicted to it!
Light bondage. Now bondage and BDSM isn’t for everyone. And if you’re not into domination or submission, fret not. You really don’t have to go all the way to enjoy the lighter side of bondage. Tie your partner’s hands together with a scarf or tie it to the bedpost, and have your way with them. If you want to get kinkier, you can blindfold them or 51 JOY FEELINGS!
even completely dominate them in bed Forced sex fantasies. Many girls particularly enjoy this fantasy where her boyfriend tries to force himself inside her while she tries to fend him off. And guys too enjoy the sensation of overpowering the girl, even if it’s all just a sexual gameplay. When both of you get into bed, try to pretend like both of you are strangers. If the idea of taking control or feeling overpowered while having sex turns you on, this will definitely work its magic on you.
20 Fantasy talk. Have you ever tried talking about
your secret fantasies with your partner? It may be dirty, perverse, or may even involve someone else. But sometimes, talking about your sexual thoughts can actually bring both of you closer and even build a more intimate relationship. [Read: How to fantasize about someone else with your own lover]
When both of you are lying in bed together, talk about each other’s secret fantasies that turn either of you on. If it feels too awkward, both of you could even start talking about it while having sex when the inhibitions are 52 JOY FEELINGS!
shed and both of you are on a sexual high.
