– one day she’s goth, the next day sexy, the next oh-so-glam – she has a few beauty signatures that have us furiously keeping track of all the best beauty advice she’s given to PeopleStyle editors throughout the years. Want to look this dewy, glowy and gorgeous at 40? You might want to screenshot this page. 1. Always Go to Bed with a Clean Face “I am religious about taking my makeup off and going to bed with clean skin. My husband [Nnamdi Asomugha] is always like, ‘Wow, no matter what, you wash your face!’ I’m OCD about that. I keep makeup remover wipes in my car, on-set – even on my bedside table!” 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

2. Streamline Your Beauty Routine “These days I’m also looking for ways to make my style and makeup sessions happen more quickly, because the more time I have to be a mom, the better. It takes a village!” “Off the red carpet, I usually wear my hair the same way every day: up in a bun. I do so much to it, whether its [using] heat tools on-set or swimming with my kid, that I like to put a good deep conditioning mask in my hair, throw it up in a bun and just let it heal.” Always, Always, Always Load Up On SPF “I grew up in a household where everybody swims,

9

so SPF was important. A lot of black and brown girls feel like we don’t need to protect ourselves from the sun. There are benefits to melanin, but protection from skin cancer is not one of them. So, black girls do rock, but we need SPF.” Keep Your Lipstick at Hand, Always “The one thing you don’t want to do is forget your lipstick, because you’ll eat, and then you’re like, ‘My look isn’t complete because I didn’t bring my lipstick,’ and you’re stuck!” 2. SOFIA VERGARA

2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

Find a Way to DeStress “I’m a big Pilates girl. And I love to get my cardio in when I can. For me, it’s less about what I’m doing and more that I am showing up for myself.” Stick With The Basics “I like to throw on a little concealer and a fun lip and feel good. Neutrogena makes these Moisture Smooth Color Sticks that I like because they’re sheer. You have to be kissable on a date night, otherwise what’s the point?”

SofĂa Margarita Vergara Vergara (Spanish pronunciation: born July 10, 1972) is a Colombian-American actress and model.

2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

12

Vergara rose to prominence while co-hosting two television shows for Spanish-language television network UnivisiĂłn in the late 1990s. Her first notable acting job in English was in the film Chasing Papi (2003). Subsequently, she appeared in other films, including Four Brothers (2005) and two Tyler Perry films: Meet the Browns (2008) and Madea Goes to Jail (2009), receiving an ALMA Award nomination for the latter. Vergara's success on television has earned her roles in films The Smurfs (2011), New Year's Eve (2011), Happy Feet Two (2011), The Three Stooges (2012), Escape from Planet Earth (2013), Machete Kills (2013), Chef (2014), and Hot Pursuit (2015). In 2012, 2013, and 2016, she was the top-earning actress on US television. 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

Vergara stars on the ABC series Modern Family as Gloria DelgadoPritchett, for which she has been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards, four Primetime Emmy Awards, and seven Screen Actors Guild Awards. In 2014, she was ranked as the 32nd most powerful woman in the world by Forbes REDBOOK: A fun fact about you is that you're a natural blonde. Does dyeing your hair darker require a lot of upkeep? Sofia Vergara: Having blonde roots with dark hair, you start looking bald! So I've been making it lighter recently, just because it's easier. When my hair was very dark, I had to dye my roots every month—it was a lot of maintenance. Now I can go

13

two or three months between colorings. RB: And those bombshell waves of yours—are they natural? SV: My hair is actually straight, so I use a curling iron to create them because my hair doesn't do well with a lot of product. I can't put oils, pomades, or anything else in it because it gets weighed down. I just use shampoo, conditioner, and hairspray. My family has used Head & Shoulders forever [Sofia and her family are spokesmodels for the brand]. RB: What about makeup—what are your go-to products? SV: I've worn the same shades my whole life because I know what looks good on me and at my age. I 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

used to do more black eyeliner, but now that I'm older I wear browns because black can be too much. And I own a million products. RB: Are there days where you just don't feel like being glam? SV: Not really, no. I don't always curl my hair or wear false lashes, but I do full makeup every day and I always have. RB: How long does it typically take you to get ready? SV: An hour and 15 minutes. I take my time—I like showering, scrubbing, bubbling. Everyone is always rushing me! They'll lie about when an event starts to try to get me there on time. But I always know, so I don't give a damn.

14

RB: Is there any part of getting ready that you don't like? SV: Manicures. I don't have the patience for someone to give me one. So I'll paint my nails in the car on the way to the Golden Globes or to the airport. RB: You just launched your first scent, Sofia. Tell us about it. SV: I don't like anything too flowery, too musky, or too fruity, so I made a mix of all three. The fragrance has notes of purple violet and Colombian rose, fruity notes like plum and blackberry, and a base note of sandalwood so it's sexy. RB: Do you have an anti-aging regimen? 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

SV: I've used Crème de la Mer since before I was supposed to; I believe in prevention. Because once your skin is sagging, it's sagging. RB: So would you ever consider plastic surgery? SV: Why not? I mean, not yet, but maybe [I'll do] my under-eye bags in my 50s. We'll see what I need, but I'm not saying no! —As told to Kate Sullivan

3. KATY PERRY

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (born October 25, 1984), known professionally as Katy Perry, is an American singer and songwriter. After singing in church during her childhood, she pursued a career in gospel music as a teenager. Perry signed with Red Hill Records and released her debut studio album Katy Hudson under her birth name in 2001, which was commercially 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

unsuccessful. She moved to Los Angeles the following year to venture into secular music after Red Hill ceased operations and she subsequently began working with producers Glen Ballard, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin. After adopting the stage name Katy Perry and being dropped by The Island Def Jam Music Group and Columbia Records, she signed a recording contract

16

with Capitol Records in April 2007. Perry rose to fame in 2008 with the release of the singles "I Kissed a Girl"—which sparked controversy for its homosexual themes—and "Hot n Cold" from her second album, a pop rock record titled One of the Boys. Her third album, Teenage Dream (2010), ventured into disco, and contained the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charttopping singles "California Gurls", "Teenage Dream", "Firework", "E.T.", and "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" as well as the number-three single "The One That Got Away". The album became the first by a female artist to produce five number-one songs in the U.S., and the second overall after Michael Jackson's album Bad. In March 2012, she re-issued the album as Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, which produced the songs 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

"Part of Me" and "Wide Awake". Her fourth album, Prism, was released in 2013, and is influenced by pop and dance. She became the first artist with multiple videos to reach one billion views on Vevo with the videos for its songs "Roar" and "Dark Horse". Perry has received many awards, including four Guinness World Records, a Brit Award, and a Juno Award, and been included in the Forbes list of "TopEarning Women In Music" (2011–2016). Her estimated net worth as of 2016 is $125 million. She is one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, having sold 100 million records globally throughout her career. In film, she released an autobiographical documentary titled Katy Perry: Part of Me in 2012, and voiced Smurfette in the

17

2011 film The Smurfs and its sequel in 2013.

What's step one when you're off-duty to get glowy skin?

When you think of Katy Perry, the image of her dancing alongside sharks at the Super Bowl or in a blue wig and cupcake-inspired ensemble might come to mind. Whatever the image, it's certainly nothing you'd ever describe as vanilla. So when I met up with Perry at the Magic Castle in L.A. to hear all about her latest scent, Mad Potion, it wasn't surprising that she'd given the tried-and-true note a whole new spin. "Vanilla, they say, is an aphrodisiac," she told me. Between her superalluring fragrances and everchanging makeup looks, Perry always keeps us wondering what's next. Here, she talks all things beauty – including game-changing ways to use lipstick (and the best stand-in nail file trick we've heard in a while).

Bronzers! I wear so little makeup when I'm not on stage. There's a Covergirl Bronzer three-in-one called Clean Glow Bronzer that I use. Then it's just mascara and brows.

2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

So would you say that's your typical beauty ritual? It really depends! When I'm at home, I'm a lot more plebeian. I love the summer and I love a little bit of Vitamin D. But when I'm on stage, it's all about creating a character and being an exaggerated version of myself. You create on-stage personas better than anyone in the business. What are a few of your favorites? I feel like the world is my playing field and I especially

18

love pulling from all sorts of different eras. Typically, I've always connected with a vintage pinup girl, but lately I've leaned more toward a tumbler rat or alternative grunge girl. But that's the magic of makeup! You can transform yourself depending on your mood. Oh yeah, it's like highlighting what you already have. Speaking of magic, what's the connection with it in your new fragrance Mad Potion? Perfume to me is like a potion and can be very enchanting. Scents create these incredible memories. Think about it: Sometimes you'll walk past someone in a hallway who is wearing a fragrance you used to spray when you were a teen. It transports you back to that 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

time. I love that scents are so powerful! Do you connect with any of the notes in this fragrance? Yes! I have worn vanilla since I was a teenager and it's always been so alluring — especially to the opposite sex. As I got older my tastes kind of changed and I wanted something a little bit more androgynous, which pushed me more towards musks. The combination of those two made me feel like I'm wearing something that's both. So I could attract anything or anyone — everything is fluid. Even in your beauty regimen! There are so many products out now that we want to work double duty. Do you use any in unintended ways? I feel like you can take any lipstick and make it a blush. I use it like finger paint and

19

you can put it on your eyes, too. When you're using less of a matte and more of a cream lipstick, it moves better and gives you a gloss. Do you have a face-washing routine after that? I never sleep with my makeup on unless I'm, like, spending the night over at a guy's house. Then I wake up an hour early to get that natch look! No, not anymore. I used to do that a lot when I was younger. Now I'm like,

2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

what you see is what you get. To wash my face I use Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil and have for several years now. I used to be deathly afraid of putting oil on my face but it really pulls out the dirt from my skin. Quick! You snag a nail on the go. How do you fix it? Actually, I was looking for a nail file the other day and I didn't have one so I just used a matchbook. Weird little tricks!

Kim Jong-un (Chosŏn'gŭl: 김정은 orean: im d ɯn] born 8 January 1984 or 5 July 1984)is the Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea and supreme leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), commonly referred to as North Korea. Kim is the third and youngest son of Kim Jong-il (1941– 2011) and his consort Ko Yong-hui.Little is known for certain about Kim Jong-un. Before taking power, Kim had barely been seen in public, and many of the activities of both Kim and his government remain shrouded 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

in secrecy. Even details such as what year he was born, and whether he did indeed attend a Western school under a pseudonym, are difficult to confirm with certainty. Kim was officially declared the supreme leader following the state funeral of his father on 28 December 2011. Kim holds the titles of Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea, Chairman of the Central Military Commission, Chairman of the National Defence Commission, Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army, and presidium

member of the Politburo of the Workers' Party of Korea.

Most Powerful People in 2013.

Kim was promoted to the rank of Marshal of North Korea in the Korean People's Army on 18 July 2012, consolidating his position as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and is often referred to as Marshal Kim Jong-un or "the Marshal" by state media.

Scarce information on Kim Jong-un's early life comes from North Korean defectors and people who have claimed to witness him abroad, such as during his school attendance in Switzerland. Some of the information has been conflicting and contradictory, perhaps conflating him with his brother, Kim Jong-chul, who also attended school in Switzerland around the same time. Nevertheless, there has been some consensus on information about his early life. North Korean authorities have stated that his birthdate is 8 January 1982, but South Korean intelligence officials believe the actual date is a year later. Former basketball player Dennis Rodman said that the birthdate is 8 January 1983 after meeting Kim in September 2013 in North Korea.Kim Jong-Un was the

Kim obtained two degrees, one in physics at Kim Il-sung University, and another as an Army officer at the Kim Ilsung Military University. On 9 March 2014, Kim Jongun was elected unopposed to the Supreme People's Assembly. At 32 or 33 years of age, Kim is the first North Korean leader born after the country's founding. second of three children Ko Yong-hui bore to Kim Jongil; his elder brother Kim Jong-chul was born in 1981, while his younger sister, Kim Yo-jong, is believed to have been born in 1987. According to reports first published in Japanese newspapers, he went to school in Switzerland near Bern. First reports claimed he attended the private Englishlanguage International School in Gümligen under the name "Chol-pak" or "Pak-chol" from 1993 to 1998.He was described as shy, a good student who got along well with his classmates and was a basketball fan.He was chaperoned by an older student, who was thought to be his bodyguard. Later, it was reported that Kim Jong-un attended the Liebefeld Steinhölzli school in Köniz near Bern under the name "Pak-un" or "Un-pak" 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

from 1998 until 2000 as the son of an employee of the North Korean embassy in Bern. Authorities of Köniz confirmed that a student from North Korea, registered as the son of a member of the embassy, attended the school from August 1998 until the autumn of 2000, but were unable to give details about his identity. Pak-un first attended a special class for foreign-language children and later attended the regular classes of the 6th, 7th, 8th, and part of the final 9th year, leaving the school abruptly in the autumn of 2000. He was described as a well-integrated and ambitious student who liked to play basketball. However, his grades and attendance rating are reported to have been poor. The ambassador of North Korea in Switzerland, Ri Chol, had a close relationship with him and acted as a mentor. One of Pak-un's classmates told

28

reporters that he had told him that he was the son of the leader of North Korea.According to some reports, Jong-un was described by classmates as a shy child who was awkward with girls and indifferent to political issues, but who distinguished himself in sports and had a fascination with the American National Basketball Association and Michael Jordan. One friend claimed that he had been shown pictures of Pak-un with Kobe Bryant and Toni ukoč. In April 2012, new documents came to light indicating that Kim Jong-un had lived in Switzerland since 1991 or 1992, earlier than previously thought. The Laboratory of Anatomic Anthropology at the University of Lyon, France, after comparing the picture of 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

the boy Pak-un taken at the Liebefeld Steinhölzli school in 1999 with a picture of Kim Jong-un from 2012 came to the conclusion that the two faces show a conformity of 95%. The head of the institute, Raoul Perrot, a forensic anthropologist, considers it most likely that the two pictures show the same person. It is believed that the student at the Gümligen International School may not have been Kim Jong-un, but his elder brother Kim Jong-chol. It is not known whether the student known as Pak-un in Liebefeld Steinhölzli lived in Switzerland prior to 1998.All the children of Kim Jong-il are said to have lived in Switzerland, as well as the mother of the two youngest sons, who lived in Geneva for some time.

PIECE BY PEICE BY KELLY CLARKSON

"Piece by Piece" is a song by American singer Kelly Clarkson taken from her seventh studio album of the same name. She cowrote the track with its producer Greg Kurstin. A midtempo pop song about restoring someone's faith in love and family relationships, Clarkson promulgated "Piece by Piece" as a sequel to the song "Because of You" (2004) but with a "happy 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

ending". After a discussion with her sister about their family life, she introspectively co-wrote the song in a first-person narrative to her father, whose neglect of his family was used as a juxtaposition to her husband's unconditional love for her and their daughter, whom they both promised to never abandon. "Piece by Piece" was first released as the second promotional single from Piece by Piece by RCA Records on February 24, 2015. Upon its release, the title track has received praise from music critics, who commended lyrical content as one of the album's highlights. Clarkson premiered the song in a live acoustic performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and has showcased it on the set list of the Piece by Piece Tour. A re-worked version of the track was released to American hot adult contemporary radio stations on November 9, 2015, as the third and final single from the album. On February 25, 2016, Clarkson performed "Piece by Piece" in a live presentation on the fifteenth season of American Idol. The successful commercial and critical response of her performance on the program led RCA to issue an "Idol version" of the track on February 29, 2016. The combined versions of "Piece by Piece" allowed the song to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number eight, becoming Clarkson's eleventh top ten hit and tying itself with "Never Again" (2007) as her highest debut on the chart. The track also attained the top position on three Billboard charts—primarily the Billboard Digital Songs chart, earning Clarkson her 100th Billboard number-one hit—a milestone in her musical career. Overseas, "Piece by Piece" became a top 40 hit in the music charts of Australia, Canada, and Scotland. Clarkson later 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

Chinua Achebe ,born Albert Chinụalụmọgụ Achebe; 16 November 1930 – 21 March 2013) was a Nigerian novelist, poet, professor, and critic. His first novel Things Fall Apart (1958), often considered 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

his best,is the most widely read book in modern African literature. Raised by his parents in the Igbo town of Ogidi in SouthEastern Nigeria, Achebe excelled at school and won a

scholarship to study medicine, but changed his studies to English literature at University College (now the University of Ibadan). He became fascinated with world religions and traditional African cultures, and began writing stories as a university student. After graduation, he worked for the Nigerian Broadcasting Service (NBS) and soon moved to the metropolis of Lagos. He gained worldwide attention for his novel, Things Fall Apart in the late 1950s; his later novels include No Longer at Ease (1960), Arrow of God (1964), A Man of the People (1966), and Anthills of the Savannah (1987). Achebe wrote his novels in English and defended the use of English, a "language of colonisers", in African literature. In 1975, his lecture An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" featured a famous criticism of Joseph 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

Conrad as "a thoroughgoing racist"; it was later published in The Massachusetts Review amid some controversy. When the region of Biafra broke away from Nigeria in 1967, Achebe became a supporter of Biafran independence and acted as ambassador for the people of the new nation. The war ravaged the populace, and as starvation and violence took its toll, he appealed to the people of Europe and the Americas for aid. When the Nigerian government retook the region in 1970, he involved himself in political parties but soon resigned due to frustration over the corruption and elitism he witnessed. He lived in the United States for several years in the 1970s, and returned to the U.S. in 1990 after a car accident left him partially disabled.

60

A titled Igbo chieftain himself, Achebe's novels focus on the traditions of Igbo society, the effect of Christian influences, and the clash of Western and traditional African values during and after the colonial era. His style relies heavily on the Igbo oral tradition, and combines straightforward narration with representations of folk stories, proverbs, and oratory. He also published a number of short stories, children's books, and essay collections.

ExxonMobil is the largest of the world's Big Oil companies, or supermajors, with daily production of 3.921 million BOE (barrels of oil equivalent). In 2008, this was approximately 3 percent of world production, which is less than several of the largest state-owned petroleum companies. When ranked by oil and gas reserves, it is 14th in the world—with less than 1 percent of the total. Both Exxon and Mobil were descendants of Standard Oil, established by John D. Rockefeller and partners in 1870 as the Standard Oil Company of Ohio. In 1882, it together with its affiliated companies was incorporated as the Standard Oil Trust with Standard Oil Company of New Jersey and Standard Oil Company of New York as its largest companies. Dread and lassitude twist into a spare and stunning portrait of a marital estrangement. At the end of this unsettling psychological novel, the narrator suggests that “perhaps wife and husband and marriage itself are only words that conceal much more unstable realities, more turbulent than can be contained in a handful of 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

syllables, or any amount of writing.” itamura’s third work of fiction builds into a hypnotic meditation on infidelity and the unknowability of one’s spouse. In precise and muted prose, the entire story unspools in the coolly observant mind of a young woman, a translator. She is estranged from Christopher Wallace, her “handsome and wealthy” husband of five years. He is a relentless adulterer; the narrator herself is now living with another man. The novel begins with a phone call from Isabella, a hostile and unpleasant mother-in-law, petulant that she can’t reach her only son and ignorant of the separation. Christopher has decamped to rural Greece, and Isabella insists her daughter-in-law leave England to go after him. Thinking it time to ask for a divorce, she agrees. In the remote fishing village of

Gerolimenas, there are grim portents: stray dogs, high unemployment, a landscape charred from a season of wildfires, and the hostility of a hotel receptionist who appears to have slept with Christopher. Each of 13 taut chapters turns the screw; at the beginning of the seventh there is a murder. Kitamura leaves it unsolved. Instead of delivering a whodunit, the author plucks a bouquet of unforeseen but psychologically piercing

consequences. The narrator thinks, “One of the problems of happiness—and I’d been very happy, when Christopher and I were first engaged—is that it makes you both smug and unimaginative.” As this harrowing story ends, her life is diminished and her imagination is cruelly awake. A minutely observed novel of infidelity unsettles its characters and readers.

When the novel begins, Joe is in the employ of one of Boston's most powerful mobsters, Tim Hickey. Joe and two friends knock off a gambling room located behind a speakeasy. While building his empire, Joe fights against the Ku Klux Klan. The local chief of the Klan is related to Figgis, the Tampa police chief. Joe blackmails Figgis with pornographic photographs of the man’s beautiful daughter Loretta in a drug-addled state, whom Figgis had believed was working in Los Angeles, California, as an actress. Figgis's daughter later returns to Tampa and becomes a famous preacher. Loretta later reveals to Joe that she does not believe in God and is merely performing. Loretta later commits suicide and it is 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

When Pescatore decides to replace Joe in Florida with his own dimwitted son, Albert White uses this opportunity to seek revenge against Joe, whom he blames for Emma's death. Dion becomes head of the family while Joe acts as an advisor. While in Cuba, Joe meets Emma outside the brothel where she works. She reveals she was involved in Joe's arrest. When Joe and Graciela return to the United States for a visit, Graciela is shot and killed by Figgis. Joe turns his back on organized crime to live a more mundane life with his son.

2. SING,UNBURIED SING BY JESMYN WARD

The searing and profound odyssey of a Southern family-by National Book Awardwinner Jesmyn Ward. In Jesmyn Wards's first

2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

novel since her National Book Award-winner, Salvage the Bones, she returns to Mississippi and the grand themes of her earlier work.

75

Confronting the realities of life in the rural South, Ward gives us an epochal story, a road novel through Mississippi's past and present that explores the bonds of family as tested by racism and poverty. Told in Ward's rich, lyrical language, this majestic novel is impossible to ignore. For Pop and Mam, their daughter Leonie, and her kids Jojo and Kayla, life is hard: Mam has cancer, Pop is preoccupied by working their small parcel of land, Leonie has a meth problem, and Jojo and Kayla seek love from their grandparents rather than their absent mother. Their lives are further 2017 JOIE JOURS AWARDS

complicated when Leonie gets the call from the white father of her children that he's up for parole. She quickly gathers her kids, recruits a friend for the ride, and embarks on the journey north to the Delta to collect Michael at Parchman Farm, the Mississippi State Penitentiary. But no journey for a woman like Leonie through this state is without danger, and many things go wrong, sometimes dramatically. If the trip to Parchman is rocky, the return is worse, and arriving at home doesn't bring Leonie and her family the peace they seek. Instead, two battles ensue: one with Mississippi's present and

76

another with its horrific past. Raw, heartbreaking, and ultimately hopeful, Jesmyn Ward's novel grapples with the ugly truths at the heart of our national story, paying tribute to Faulkner and Morrison, The Odyssey and the Old Testament, all while showcasing the major talents of this singular American voice.
