Queen's 90th birthday: Her Majesty celebrates historic milestone with family and the nation

Many of those who braved the chilly spring morning clutched presents for the Queen, from bouquets of flowers and homemade birthday cards to soft toys and balloons. Fluttering above Windsor Castle's round tower was a huge version of the royal standard used for major celebrations. It was hoisted over the tower when the Prince of Wales married the Duchess of Cornwall in Windsor's Guildhall in 2005.

Selena Gomez TV Series in the Works? Features Justin Bieber & Taylor Swift? Selena Gomez is set to produce her own life story in Lifetime and it may feature her close friends and even ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber. The yet-to-be-titled autobiography drama will tell the story of the young singer’s rise from being Disney’s teen star to among Hollywood’s biggest names. The 23-year-old singer started her career in “Barney & Friends” Season 7 in 2002 before she landed the lead role in Disney’s “Wizards of Waverly Place.” Gomez also starred in “Spring Breakers.”

According to Rolling Stone, the series will focus on Gomez’s friends and “trusted inner circle” which include her best friend, Taylor Swift. Vanity Fair added the show may also include Gomez’s career journey, her on-and-off relationship with Bieber, and her struggle with lupus. JOY FEELINGS MAG

No premiere date or casting details have been announced for the drama series. Meanwhile, Selena Gomez’s bio is part of Lifetime’s newly announced “Fempire.” It a roster of TV series and films made for and by women which are all set to premiere this 2016-2017 season, Rolling Stone noted. According to Billboard, the singer will produce her own bio series along with Kevin Spacey (House of Cards), Dana Brunetti (The Social Network), Mandy Teefey, Samantha Droke, and Troy Searer. Gomez is best known for her on-screen roles but it can be noticed that the actress/singer has been boosting her portfolio behind the camera. Although she also served as executive producer for the “Wizards of Waverly Place” TV movie, Gomez’s upcoming Netflix mystery series, “13 Reasons Why,” marks her first major executive producer role, Entertainment Weekly noted. It was earlier reported that the “Hands to Myself” singer is leaving acting. However, this is still speculation. Selena Gomez released her new album, “Revival 10.9,” in October last year. She is also set to kick off her “Revival” tour in Las Vegas on May 6 and will conclude in Anaheim, California on July 9.

magazine. He gets the spotlight at Joy Feelings magazine in this issue. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, frontrunners in the race to be the US presidential candidates for the Republican and Democratic parties, have secured comfortable victories in the crucial New York primary election. Mrs Clinton, after beating Bernie Sanders, said her victory for the Democratic nomination was in sight. Mr Trump looked set to take nearly all the 95 Republican delegates at stake. He said his nearest rival Ted Cruz was "just about mathematically eliminated". With more than 98% of the results in, Mr Trump is leading with just over 60% of the vote while Mrs Clinton has just under 58%.

10 DOS AND DON’TS FOR BEAUTIFUL SKIN 1. The Golden Rule Do: Make sure you always

JOY FEELINGS MAG

(and we mean always) remove your makeup before hitting the sheets. The skin needs to breathe overnight. And makeup prevents that, as leaving it on overnight clogs the pores which may cause blemishes and/or blackheads. Don’t possess a makeup remover? Just put some olive oil on a cotton pad and gently massage the oil onto your face to get rid of the makeup and dirt. Don’t: Forget that exfoliation is indispensable. At least once or twice a week, exfoliate your skin to remove the layers of dead skin, sure to leave you with a more healthy glow and brighter skin. You can also apply a paste of walnut in powder form with yogurt to exfoliate your skin, as the antioxidants present in walnuts help remove dirt and promote radiant skin.

Page 10

2. Sun and Skin Do: Apply sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Since a lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems, you have to protect your skin from the sun. Make sure the label reads ‘noncomedogenic’ or ‘nonacnegenic’ so that the

product does not tend to block pores. Don’t: Skip the sunscreen, whether it's cloudy or cold outside (no excuses). If you’re heading to a beach or around reflective surfaces like snow or ice, lather your skin up with some more sunscreen with SPF of at least 30.

3. You are What You Eat Do: Keep a note of what you put on your plate. Eat fresh fruits, greens, sufficient protein and vitamins. A diet rich in vitamin C and low in fats and sugar promotes radiant skin. Consider a low-sugar diet, which can keep insulin levels down, allowing cells to maintain a healthy balance.

"Don’t: Eat spicy and fermented foods, salt, citrus fruits, fried food. Instead favour blander foods such as rice, oatmeal and applesauce, advises American author and Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad, in The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies.

4. Sweat It Out! Do: Exercise regularly. Running, jogging and yoga will give your body the necessary blood circulation, and also accelerate the cleansing process of your entire body. You will notice a glow on your face after working out. Racing against time? Just

take a brisk walk around the block. Don’t: Skip skincare before and after a workout. Apply a toner to help minimize oil production before heading out. Exfoliate after, and then apply shea butter or olive oil to moisturize the skin.

5. Beauty Sleep Do: Try to sleep at least 8 hours every night. If you don’t get enough shut eye, your skin gets tired just like you - it sags and you get bags. So don’t risk it. You can also apply honey on your face twice or thrice a week to naturally soothe and heal your skin. “Don’t: Forget to wash and

moisturize your face before going to bed”, recommends Dr. Rahul Nagar, Dermatologist, Max Hospitals. “For dry skin, use milder cleansers that are free from alcohol. Apply lots of moisturizer, and avoid hot water as it dries out the skin excessively.”

6. H2O to The Rescue Do: Hydrate yourself. Drink lots of water daily, at least 8 glasses if not more. Also, eats fruits and vegetables that have a high water content such as watermelon, cucumber, orange, strawberry, grapefruit and cantaloupe. Ayurvedic physic ian, Vasant Lad recommends

to “drink water from a blue coloured bottle”, since it has a cooling effect. Don’t: Ignore rose water. It helps prevent and reduce eye puffiness in the morning, maintains pH balance and naturally hydrates your skin if you spritz it on during the day.

7. Goodbye Acne “Do: Wash your face with warm water, three times a day, and gently massage your face in circular motions, ensuring that the cleanser contains alpha hydroxyl acid or beta hydroxyl acid. Face packs that contain multani mitti (fuller’s earth) work really well too. After cleansing, pat dry and apply a lotion which contains benzoyl peroxide”, suggests Dr. Zaheer Ahmed, Dermatologist, Max

Hospitals. Benzoyl peroxide appears to be effective due to its antibacterial actions. Don’t: Pop pimples because it can lead to more swelling, redness, and even scarring. Feel a pimple is on its way? Just clean the area with rose water, and place a chilled green tea bag for 10 minutes. Also, if you wear glasses or sunglasses, make sure you clean them frequently to keep oil from clogging the pores around your eyes and nose.

8. Go Back to Your Roots Do: Use Ayurvedic scrubs to nourish the skin, and help it breathe better. Luckily for you, everything you need is already in your kitchen. 2 tbsp chickpea flour, ½ tsp turmeric powder, a pinch of camphor and sandalwood with some rose water/milk/water is your perfect skincare pack. Yes, the secrets of beauty lies in ancient Ayurveda. Don’t: Neglect the basics.

Make Sudarshan Kriya your beauty mantra. Yes, it’s that easy. Just breathing right could rid you of spots and pimples. Nidhi Gureja, Art of Living, says “Sudarshan Kriya is a breathing technique which incorporates specific natural rhythms of the breath that harmonize the body, mind and emotions. This helps releasing accumulated stresses, and each individual’s experience is different.”

9. Spa Day Everyday? Do: Have a regular skin care regimen. “For dry skin, use a fresh cherry mask. Apply the pulp of fresh cherries on your face before going to bed. Leave for 15 minutes and wash with lukewarm water”, adds American author Vasant Lad. Don’t: Forget to pamper yourself. A gentle facial massage with oils could work

JOY FEELINGS MAG

wonders. Depending on your skin type, choose oils from mustard, coconut, almond or Kumkadi as they are excellent nourishing agents which help to get glowing skin. Better still – switch on some soothing instrumental music. After 20 minutes, what do you have? Beautiful skin and a relaxed you.

Page 18

10. Healthy Habits Do: Take out time for yourself, and try to avoid stress as much as possible. Have you ever noticed that when you are stressed, you tend to break out more? This is because stress causes your body to produce cortisol and other hormones, making the skin more oily. Practice stress management techniques like breathing exercises, yoga and meditation. The more you meditate, the more you radiate.

Don’t: Neglect your jawline and facial muscles. For just 5 minutes a day, perform a few facial exercises. You can jut out your lower lip in such a way that wrinkles are created on the chin, then lower your chin to your chest. Another exercise that works wonders is to look up towards the ceiling and pout. It stretches out the muscles making the skin more firm. “18 till I die”, why not?

You’re dressed to perfection, yet you need something to complete the look. Your smile! While we spend so much time and energy on honing our bodies and looks, we forget to express our inner joy and happiness. “Keeping a smile on your face will help maintain the tone of your facial muscles and skin. People may say you look 10 years younger than you are!”, adds the Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad.

101 MORE WAYS TO HAVE A BETTER SKIN Whether you struggled with acne as a teen, you’re battling dark spots in your twenties, or you still can’t really suss out exactly how to get clear skin based on your own skin type, everyone struggles with less than perfect skin. In a world of constant photo sharing and status updating, the pressure is on to constantly have clear skin … or at least find the

perfect filter to look like you do. Because everyone could always use some help in the clear skin department, even if it’s just a maintenance situation, we’ve compiled the 101 best tips for clear skin below. Read on to get your skin to its ideal place in no time at all. 101. For bad acne marks, a chemical peel can help to reduce or eliminate the discoloration of skin. 100. If you struggle with hormonal breakouts every month, reduce your alcohol and dairy intake and you’ll see an improvement in your skin. 99. The biggest mistake you can make is leaving your makeup on overnight. Keep makeup remover wipes at your bedside table to avoid acne in the morning. 98. Berries are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, plus they have a low glycemic index so they won’t JOY FEELINGS MAG

raise your blood sugar. Because sugar can stimulate a breakout, eating berries will reduce the risk of pimples. 97. Exercise is important to staying healthy and keeping your skin clear, and Dr. Ava Shamban suggests exercising for about 15 minutes a day to keep toxins in your body at bay and maintain clear skin. 96. Using SPF every day will prevent wrinkles and dark spots, while dark spot correctors can reduce the appearance of marks over time. 95. When you work out, be sure to wash your face both before and after you exercise. Leaving makeup on your face while you exercise means that it will mix with your sweat and clog pores, so be sure to start and end with clean skin. 94. Hydration is key to clear skin. Dehydration causes breakouts, because the skin overcompensates and Page 21

produces more oil than necessary when it’s dry, which in turn causes you to break out. Drink more water! 93. When a pimple comes along and you need to get rid of it ASAP, try a spot treatment like Clinique Acne Solutions Spot Healing Gel. It helps to zap pimples in as little as 12 hours. 92. Grapefruit is packed with antioxidants, so using skin care products containing grapefruit will help to wake up your skin and leave it feeling clean and fresh. 91. To get rid of any body acne, make sure you don’t “stew in your own sweat;” shower with salicylic acid wash immediately after you workout to avoid clogging your pores. 90. If you’re going to pop a pimple at home, do it the right way. Sterilize your hands and a small needle with rubbing alcohol, then gently puncture the whitehead of the pimple, just JOY FEELINGS MAG

enough to break the skin. Using a clean cotton swab, press on either side of the pimple until it’s drained. Cover with a bandage to keep the area clean while it’s healing. 89. Oil from your hair will get onto your pillowcase as you sleep, so change your pillowcases once a week to avoid sleeping on oil all night long. 88. Rosewater is both balancing and soothing, making it great for all skin types to even out redness and calm any irritation that may be happening. 87. Smoking not only dulls your skin and causes blotchiness, it will also give you wrinkles. Ditch the habit (you’ll thank us later). 86. When you get acne, try your best not to pick at it. The dirt and oil on your fingers can make things worse with bacteria and you’ll risk infection, which can lead to scarring. Page 22

85. If you can find a tube of moisturizer instead of a jar, use that. The bacteria from your fingers that touches the lotion each time you go to apply it stays in the jar and goes onto your face. If you must use a jar, use a cotton swab to apply product. 84. Benzoyl peroxide products that reduce acne are only good for up to three months after they’ve been opened, then the ingredients become inactive. If you’ve got an old tube, toss it in favor of a new one. 83. If you’re stressed, your skin shows it. Try Kiehl’s Skin Rescuer to even out redness and reduce signs of aging. 82. When booking an appointment for a facial, be sure to stay out of the sun for a few days beforehand so that you don’t irritate your skin. 81. An overnight facial that works while you sleep is key, and Korres Wild Rose and Vitamin C Advanced JOY FEELINGS MAG

Brightening Sleeping Facial lets you wake up looking refreshed. 80. For a seriously awful pimple, head to the dermatologist for a shot of cortisone. 79. If you’ve got dry skin, opt for a face oil instead of a lightweight lotion. The all day hydration will change your skin for the better. 78. Be sure to exfoliate your skin at least twice a week, if not every day. For sensitive skin, look for a more gentle exfoliator to use it more frequently without harsh effects. 77. If you’ve got irritable skin, try to find skin care products containing goat’s milk. Because of the stabilized pH level in goat’s milk, it’s not acidic and won’t irritate skin, giving you an even complexion. 76. Contrary to popular belief, putting Vaseline on your face nightly will not prevent wrinkles. However, if Page 23

you put a thin layer of Vaseline over damp skin, moisture will be sealed in and your skin will be much smoother in the morning. 75. Eating too much chocolate could be the cause of breakouts, but the acne is likely just from the sugar in the chocolate or the fact that you’re eating chocolate before your period, so your acne could actually be hormonal. 74. Botox is proven to help with acne, improving sebum production and reducing the size of your pores. 73. While stress can cause flare ups in your skin, working out can reduce stress and acne. Incorporating exercise into your daily routine will combat stress and keep your skin clear. 72. You should always be avoiding skin care products containing alcohol, but take special note if you’ve got dry skin. Alcohol will only dry out your skin even more, JOY FEELINGS MAG

making for a dry, flaky situation. 71. You should also avoid skin care products with a fragrance, whether it be a face or a body wash. Fragrances can irritate skin, causing redness and allergic reactions. 70. Don’t let greasy sunscreen be an excuse for not wearing any at all! Instead, find a lightweight, non-greasy SPF formula like Shiseido Urban Environment UV Protection Cream SPF 30 and stop dangerous UV rays in their tracks. 69. If you’re a DIY beauty queen, use the milk in your fridge to get clear, smooth skin. Dampen a washcloth with milk and gently pat it over your face, leaving it on your face for about 10 minutes before rinsing. For the effect all over, add a cup of milk to your bath water. Page 24

68. Sunscreen is not just for the beach – the New England Journal of Medicine discovered that even being exposed to sunlight through glass (like the windows in your office) can have damaging effects on your skin. 67. For a procedure that will minimize and tighten pores while moisturizing skin, try a microdermabrasion treatment at the spa. 66. For pale-skinned girls everywhere, St. Tropez Skin Illuminator makes your skin luminescent and clear. 65. During your morning beauty routine, it’s best to style your hair before doing your makeup. If you’ve got makeup on your face before you start using a blow dryer, the heat begins to melt your makeup, sealing it into your pores and making your skin much more susceptible to breakouts. 64. If you’ve got an ingrown hair on your face, use a hot JOY FEELINGS MAG

compress on the area to open up pores for about 10 minutes, softening the hair. Then, use a slanted tweezer to pluck the hair, followed by washing the area to avoid infection. 63. Stop touching your face throughout the day! You pick up bacteria from every surface you touch from your keyboard to your cell phone to elevator buttons to menus at a restaurant, and all of that bacteria floods your face once you start touching your skin. Hands off, and you’ll see less breakouts. 62. Adding coconut oil to your diet will help to moisturize and smooth your skin, and Miranda Kerr swears by this trick. 61. Speaking of coconut oil, mix it with baking soda for a killer facial scrub that will help with eczema. 60. Wine (in moderation) is proven to help shield your skin cells from harmful UV rays, so feel free to drink up. Page 25

59. Green tea is packed with antioxidants and antiinflammatory properties, fighting off bacteria and free radicals that can harm your skin. Try to drink at least one cup of green tea a day. 58. To minimize breakouts during the summer, cut the number of products you use by opting for a tinted moisturizer with SPF, one of our favorite triple-duty products. 57. Vitamin E oil heals scars, but be sure to use it sparingly on your face as too much will overdo it. Dab some over a scar at bedtime to let the vitamin work overnight. 56. As the seasons change, so should your skin care. The heavy cream you use in the winter should become a lightweight moisturizer in the summer so that your skin isn’t taking on more product than it needs during warmer months. 55. Make washing your face in the morning and nighttime JOY FEELINGS MAG

a routine by setting a reminder for yourself for three weeks. Once you do it for three weeks straight, it will become habit, and it’ll be integrated into your daily routine. 54. Using retinoids at night helps to prevent acne and fade spots, treating the areas overnight. 53. Try taking up yoga or another relaxing activity to de-stress yourself on a regular basis. Because stress is a huge cause of acne, combating it in any way will reduce breakouts. 52. Can’t find a spot treatment for acne? Try using 100-percent tea tree oil on the area before bedtime, and you’ll wake up with a much happier complexion. 51. Clean your glasses and sunglasses with rubbing alcohol to kill any bacteria that may be living on them, causing breakouts while they sit on your face. Page 26

50. If you’ve got bangs, you may experience breakouts more frequently on your forehead than any other part of your face because of the excess oil from your hair. Be sure to wash your bangs every day if you’re used to going two days without washing your hair, or pin your bangs up while they’re especially in need of a shampoo. 49. By learning which skin type you have, you can also learn how to treat it. Whether it’s dry, normal, oily or combination, there’s a specific type of product you should be looking for that will work best for you. 48. Clean your makeup brushes every two weeks or so. The amount of product and bacteria build up that happens within two weeks is frightening, and the longer you wait to clean the brushes the longer you’re putting the bacteria right on your skin, causing breakouts. Use warm JOY FEELINGS MAG

water and a mild antibacterial soap to clean your brushes, laying flat to dry to avoid any warping that can happen. 47. Don’t over-wash your face. Though clean skin leads to clear skin, washing too vigorously or too often can irritate skin and do more harm than good. 46. Avoid oil-based foundations and other cosmetic products, as the oil will clog pores and certainly cause breakouts. 45. In addition to face wash, use a toner if you’ve got oily skin. Any excess makeup and bacteria will be removed and you’ll have fresh skin.

44. Try to cut back on fast food or anything fried. The excess grease may not immediately cause acne, but over time it can build up and your skin will be showing the effects. Page 27

43. Similarly to fast food, avoid sugary drinks like soda and juice in favor of water. A sugar surplus will not do anything to help your skin. 42. If you’re skipping a day of shampoo, sleep with your hair in a ponytail to keep your face away from any grease that may be in your strands. 41. For irritated skin, rubbing an ice cube over your face for a few minutes a day will help to alleviate any burning or redness happening. 40. Don’t just wash and moisturize your face – take care of every inch of skin on your body for clear skin overall. 39. One cause of body acne on your shoulders may be that your bra straps are too tight. By loosening the straps just a pinch, your skin will be able to breathe and will be less prone to breaking out in that area. Plus, make sure you’re not allergic to the fabric in the bra. JOY FEELINGS MAG

38. Products containing almonds can help to moisturize your skin and lighten dark circles, so look for almonds on the ingredients label on your next skin care purchase. 37. If you’ve got sensitive skin, try to buy hypoallergenic products to reduce any allergic reactions that may happen in the future. 36. Treat yourself to a spa day once in a while. Relax, rest and get a seriously awesome skin treatment that will make you feel like a new person. 35. Make sure you’re getting at least seven hours of sleep a night. A lack of sleep wreaks havoc on your skin, but resting for enough time each night lets your body rejuvenate and restore itself, leading to clearer skin. 34. Your cell phone contains more bacteria than a toilet seat, so putting it against your face when you’re talking on the phone can cause massive Page 28

breakouts. Be sure to use anti-bacterial wipes to clean your phone, plus use speaker phone or your headphones as much as possible when calling your friends to avoid acne. 33. Using mineral makeup that contains zinc oxide will help to fight acne as you cover it, instead of other makeup that will simply clog pores. Look for this ingredient the next time you’re due for a new foundation. 32. If you’re someone who struggles with not drinking enough water throughout the day, place a full glass of water on your bedside table at night and drink it as soon as you wake up in the morning to kickstart hydration. Hydrated skin is clearer skin. 31. Carry a pack of oil blotting sheets in your purse wherever you go for touch ups throughout the day. By getting rid of oil and shine JOY FEELINGS MAG

throughout the day, it won’t be building up on your face for hours before you wash it off. 30. Don’t be afraid of moisturizer, even if you’ve got oily skin. Applying makeup on top of dry, flaky skin will only make your skin look even more dry and flaky, so opt for a lightweight moisturizer to keep things smooth and clear. 29. Steam and hot water will open pores while cold water and air will help to close them. Never apply your makeup directly after a hot shower because when your pores are open, they’ll instantly absorb more of the makeup, clogging pores. Wait about 10 to 15 minutes before applying makeup so that your pores will close up first. 28. Try going without makeup for one day a week over the weekend to let your skin breathe. Page 29

27. Ditch your makeup products after they’ve been around for six months. Once they hit the six month mark, they’ve got enough bacteria in them to cause a breakout. 26. Don’t use your hand towel as your face towel. The dirt that is left behind on a hand towel should not be

JOY FEELINGS MAG

used to rub against your face, so be sure to use separate towels. 25. Cut back on the candy. Sugar in candy builds up in your body and manifests in the form of acne, so try reaching for a healthier snack instead.

Page 30

24. Even when you’re inside, you should be wearing an SPF on your face. The lightbulbs and screens that JOY FEELINGS MAG

shine on your face all day can actually cause damage that’s completely prevented with sunscreen. Page 31

23. Try a face mask about once a week, but don’t overuse it (like every day). 22. Sitting close to your laptop and letting your hair fall in your face can cause breakouts, so be sure to sit a bit farther from your computer and pull your hair into a ponytail while you’re at the screen. 21. Crush up aspirin and mix it into water to form a paste, put it on your face and let it dry as a face mask, then rinse it off. It dries up acne, healing it at the source. 20. Apple cider vinegar works as a toner to help clear your skin by balancing your pH level. Try drinking a tablespoon of it a day to cure acne from the inside out. 19. Crush up garlic and mix it with water, then take a washcloth and dampen part of it, washing the areas of your face that usually break out. It works as a great antibacterial solution. JOY FEELINGS MAG

18. Honey is also a natural antibacterial agent. Try placing a dab of honey on a problem pimple at night, and the issue will be much smaller when you wake up in the morning. 17. Mint is an antiinflammatory, so using mint oil or crushed mint leaves on a red, irritated area of skin will help to soothe the situation. 16. Beefing up your fiber intake will help with digestion, meaning your body will be able to process foods better and in turn, your skin will reap the benefits. Foods rich in fiber include fruits, vegetables and whole grains. 15. Limit the dairy products you consume, like milk and cheese. These days, animals are fed hormones so that their food products are super charged, but it means that the milk you’re drinking and the cheese you’re eating could contain hormones, which can throw off your own hormonal Page 32

balance (like when you get your period). 14. Lavender oil and aloe vera juice can help minimize acne scars. 13. Plain yogurt makes a fantastic hydrating face mask. Apply a layer to your skin and wash it off after about 15 minutes. 12. Taking a biotin supplement will help your body regenerate skin cells faster, so your skin will be clearer faster. Added bonus: it also helps with hair and nail growth. 11. If it seems like a certain beauty product is making you break out, talk to your doctor to test if you’re allergic to gluten or another ingredient that may be irritating your skin. 10. Slice up a tomato and lay it over your face, allowing the juice to act as astringent to break up oil and dirt. 9. If your favorite baseball cap is causing pimples on your forehead, the best way JOY FEELINGS MAG

to wash the hat is to put it in the dishwasher. Plus, while it’s washing your forehead will be able to breathe. 8. Wash your hands before you wash your face. Going straight into washing your face with dirt and oil on your hands will defeat the purpose of cleaning your face. 7. Dark spots can take up to four months to heal, so continue to treat with dark spot corrector religiously until you see results. Don’t be discouraged! 6. If you’re prone to hormonal acne, try to avoid spot treating and instead, use a salicylic acid cleanser over your entire face. 5. Unfortunately, caffeine can trigger acne, so cutting back on your coffee intake (especially if you add tons of sugar) will help to clear things up. 4. Look for non-comedogenic makeup and moisturizer to avoid breakouts. Page 33

3. Lowering your alcohol intake will also help to clear skin, as drinking alcohol (especially mixed drinks) is as good as drinking sugar. 2. If you’re taking a hot shower, try not to linger. The heat can dry out your skin,

JOY FEELINGS MAG

leaving it dehydrated and flaky. 1. After you’ve tried every tip and trick out there, if your skin still isn’t clear, make an appointment with the dermatologist for a more personalized plan of attack.

HOW TO DEAL WITH THE FLU It is Possible to Help Ease the Pain of Body Aches during the Flu When you have body aches from the flu, you are more than likely to feel much worst than if you did not have them. When you do start feeling the body aches, the first thing we want to do is get rid of them as fast as they showed up. Unfortunately, getting rid of them completely is probably unrealistic, you can however do certain things to relieve the body aches from the flu .If you are suffering from body aches caused by the flu, JOY FEELINGS MAG

one of the first things you need to do is run a hot bath. The hot water from the bath will help to eliminate the body aches that you are suffering from. Nothing is going to completely take them away, but it will help to lessen them somewhat so that you can do something other than lay in bed all day. Taking over the counter pain medication is another way to help eliminate the discomfort from body aches associated with the flu. Medications such as aspirin, Tylenol, Advil or Aleve, will help you get through the worse part of Page 35

the body ache aches. Read the directions on the packages for the recommended dosage. Do not exceed them either. Sometimes when you over medicate, it back fires and makes things feel even worse. Have someone give you a massage where your body is aching at. Most of the time when you get body aches from the flu, your legs are the first thing to bother you. Ask your spouse or a friend to give you a leg or body massage. If your legs are bothering you, have them rub mentholated cream on them as well. This will allow your blood to flow freely, and give them some heat to soothe the aching. Lay on your bed or couch with your legs propped up high on a pillow. Again, your legs are usually the first things to bother you when you get aches from the flu. If JOY FEELINGS MAG

you lay down and prop your legs up over your heart, you will allow the blood to flow freely through your legs, minimizing the aches and pains you are feeling. Heating pads or heated blankets can help to relieve some of the pain caused by body aches. If you have a couple of heating pads, lay yourself on the couch or a bed and place them wherever the aches are. Same goes for the heating blanket, turn it to a medium heat, and crawl underneath and enjoy it. Do not use excessive heat, you could burn yourself, which in turn will cause you more pain. If you have a jacuzzi or a hot tub, get inside of it immediately. The heat from the hot tub water will relax all your muscles and make them feel somewhat better. Stay inside the hot tub or jacuzzi, for as long as you possibly can. The more you Page 36

stay inside of it, the better you and your body will feel.

taking medication to bring your numbers down.

As I have said many times, if you have the flu and you are experiencing body aches, these remedies will not take them away completely. They will however help minimize how uncomfortable body aches can be.

Lifestyle plays an important role in treating your high blood pressure. If you successfully control your blood pressure with a healthy lifestyle, you might avoid, delay or reduce the need for medication.

The flu is a nasty bug that can last anywhere between one to two weeks, and you will have to bare with it, letting it takes its course on you.

Here are 10 lifestyle changes you can make to lower your blood pressure and keep it down.

Warning : If you are feeling dehydrated, lethargic, dizzy, hot flashes, hard to breath, excessive sweating, and a high fever over 103 for over two days, please see a physician immediately.

Blood pressure often increases as weight increases. Being overweight also can cause disrupted breathing while you sleep (sleep apnea), which further raises your blood pressure.

If you've been diagnosed with high blood pressure, you might be worried about

Weight loss is one of the most effective lifestyle changes for controlling blood pressure. Losing just 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) can

help reduce your blood pressure. Besides shedding pounds, you generally should also keep an eye on your waistline. Carrying too much weight around your waist can put you at greater risk of high blood pressure. In general: Men are at risk if their waist measurement is greater than 40 inches (102 centimeters).  Women are at risk if their waist measurement is greater than 35 inches (89 centimeters). These numbers vary among ethnic groups. Ask your doctor about a healthy waist measurement for you. 

2. Exercise regularly Regular physical activity — at least 30 minutes most days of the week — can lower your blood pressure by 4 to 9 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). It's important to be JOY FEELINGS MAG

consistent because if you stop exercising, your blood pressure can rise again. If you have slightly high blood pressure (prehypertension), exercise can help you avoid developing full-blown hypertension. If you already have hypertension, regular physical activity can bring your blood pressure down to safer levels. The best types of exercise for lowering blood pressure include walking, jogging, cycling, swimming or dancing. Strength training also can help reduce blood pressure. Talk to your doctor about developing an exercise program. 3. Eat a healthy diet Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products and skimps on saturated fat and cholesterol can lower your blood Page 38

pressure by up to 14 mm Hg. This eating plan is known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet.

and stick to your healthyeating plan when you're dining out, too. 4. Reduce sodium in your diet

It isn't easy to change your eating habits, but with these tips, you can adopt a healthy diet:

Even a small reduction in the sodium in your diet can reduce blood pressure by 2 to 8 mm Hg.

Keep a food diary. Writing down what you eat, even for just a week, can shed surprising light on your true eating habits. Monitor what you eat, how much, when and why. Consider boosting potassium. Potassium can lessen the effects of sodium on blood pressure. The best source of potassium is food, such as fruits and vegetables, rather than supplements. Talk to your doctor about the potassium level that's best for you. Be a smart shopper. Read food labels when you shop

The effect of sodium intake on blood pressure varies among groups of people. In general, limit sodium to less than 2,300 milligrams (mg) a day or less. However, a lower sodium intake — 1,500 mg a day or less — is appropriate for people with greater salt sensitivity, including: African-Americans  Anyone age 51 or older  Anyone diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease To decrease sodium in your diet, consider these tips: 

Read food labels. If possible, choose lowPage 39

sodium alternatives of the foods and beverages you normally buy.  Eat fewer processed foods. Only a small amount of sodium occurs naturally in foods. Most sodium is added during processing.  Don't add salt. Just 1 level teaspoon of salt has 2,300 mg of sodium. Use herbs or spices to add flavor to your food.  Ease into it. If you don't feel you can drastically reduce the sodium in your diet suddenly, cut back gradually. Your palate will adjust over time. 5. Limit the amount of alcohol you drink Alcohol can be both good and bad for your health. In small amounts, it can potentially lower your blood pressure by 2 to 4 mm Hg. But that protective effect is lost if you drink too much alcohol — generally more JOY FEELINGS MAG

than one drink a day for women and for men older than age 65, or more than two a day for men age 65 and younger. One drink equals 12 ounces of beer, five ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80proof liquor. Drinking more than moderate amounts of alcohol can actually raise blood pressure by several points. It can also reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medications. 6. Quit smoking Each cigarette you smoke increases your blood pressure for many minutes after you finish. Quitting smoking helps your blood pressure return to normal. People who quit smoking, regardless of age, have substantial increases in life expectancy. 7. Cut back on caffeine The role caffeine plays in blood pressure is still debated. Caffeine can raise blood pressure by as much as Page 40

10 mm Hg in people who rarely consume it, but there is little to no strong effect on blood pressure in habitual coffee drinkers. Although the effects of chronic caffeine ingestion on blood pressure aren't clear, the possibility of a slight increase in blood pressure exists. To see if caffeine raises your blood pressure, check your pressure within 30 minutes of drinking a caffeinated beverage. If your blood pressure increases by 5 to 10 mm Hg, you may be sensitive to the blood pressure raising effects of caffeine. Talk to your doctor about the effects of caffeine on your blood pressure. 8. Reduce your stress Chronic stress is an important contributor to high blood pressure. Occasional stress also can contribute to high blood pressure if you react to JOY FEELINGS MAG

stress by eating unhealthy food, drinking alcohol or smoking. Take some time to think about what causes you to feel stressed, such as work, family, finances or illness. Once you know what's causing your stress, consider how you can eliminate or reduce stress. If you can't eliminate all of your stressors, you can at least cope with them in a healthier way. Try to: 



Change your expectations. Give yourself time to get things done. Learn to say no and to live within manageable limits. Try to learn to accept things you can't change. Think about problems under your control and make a plan to solve them. You could talk to your boss about difficulties at work or to family Page 41

members about problems at home.  Know your stress triggers. Avoid whatever triggers you can. For example, spend less time with people who bother you or avoid driving in rush-hour traffic.  Make time to relax and to do activities you enjoy. Take 15 to 20 minutes a day to sit quietly and breathe deeply. Try to intentionally enjoy what you do rather than hurrying through your "relaxing activities" at a stressful pace.  Practice gratitude. Expressing gratitude to others can help reduce stressful thoughts. 9. Monitor your blood pressure at home and see your doctor regularly Home monitoring can help you keep tabs on your blood pressure, make certain your lifestyle changes are working, JOY FEELINGS MAG

and alert you and your doctor to potential health complications. Blood pressure monitors are available widely and without a prescription. Talk to your doctor about home monitoring before you get started. Regular visits with your doctor are also key to controlling your blood pressure. If your blood pressure is under control, you might need to visit your doctor only every six to 12 months, depending on other conditions you might have. If your blood pressure isn't well-controlled, your doctor will likely want to see you more frequently. 10. Get support Supportive family and friends can help improve your health. They may encourage you to take care of yourself, drive you to the doctor's office or embark on an exercise Page 42

program with you to keep your blood pressure low. If you find you need support beyond your family and friends, consider joining a support group. This may put you in touch with people who can give you an emotional or morale boost and who can offer practical tips to cope with your condition.

Barack Obama is expected to warn the UK of the dangers of leaving the European Union, saying it would diminish the country's global influence. The US President flies in to the UK late on Thursday evening and is understood to be planning to make his arguments for the UK to remain in the EU in a newspaper article and in comments at a news conference on Friday at Downing Street. He is also likely to make a compelling case for

continued membership of the 28-nation bloc on the back of the country's potential to strike trade deals with allies, including the US. :: Everything You Wanted To Know About The EU ... Or Not At Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday, David Cameron warned that striking new deals outside the EU would mean the UK would need more than just "good relations", it would need "nailed down trade agreements".

Give OPEC more power and let Iran and Saudi bicker The author is a Reuters Breakingviews columnist. The opinions expressed are his own. Saudi Arabia and Iran are playing politics with oil. Their bickering was the main factor behind the collapse of a deal on April 17 to freeze output, despite many of OPEC’s 13 oil-producing members supporting an

agreement with producers outside the group to boost prices. The Middle East’s oldest rivals in Tehran and Riyadh now pose a risk to the stability of global energy markets. OPEC has so far proved a poor arbiter of the feud, which is ultimately about who is top dog in the Middle East. Critics argue the group is a cartel, which adjusts oil supplies to suit the political motives of its most powerful

members and not the needs of the market. In its current form they have a point. OPEC’s power to influence prices is largely due to the vast oil production of its largest member, Saudi Arabia. With the ability to pump 12.5 million barrels per day of crude – enough to meet about 13 percent of world demand – the kingdom has the loudest voice within the group. The cartel’s lack of executive authority has allowed the kingdom’s inexperienced but powerful Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to play politics with oil by blocking a deal in Doha on April 17 unless Iran cooperated. In its current form, the organisation is too dependent on decisions taken in Riyadh instead of its secretariat in Vienna. But if reformed, expanded and handed greater powers the organisation JOY FEELINGS MAG

could take the politics out of oil and act as the global policeman that the petroleum industry lacks. Instead of being a talking shop, which sets vague, nonbinding guidelines for the production of about a third of the world’s crude, OPEC should set robust targets. That might make its efforts to maintain quotas and set production limits more effective at managing the boom/bust cycle of the oil industry. The group also needs authority. Its secretary general lacks the power to impose significant punitive fines, or enforce agreements. Members retain sovereign rights to determine their own oil policies regardless of OPEC decisions. It would be better if this power was binding, like that of the banking sector’s Financial Stability Board. Page 53

Saudi and Iran are welcome to bicker. But given the threats from shale and nonOPEC members like Russia,

they’d be better off doing so in a cartel with a reinforced core.
