WHAT IS HEALTHY SEX? This is the question we are asking ourselves in this issue because we want to find out how we can have a healthy sex life that pleases both couples and also helps them stay together.

Jason Statham and Rosie Huntington-Whitely Jason Statham is sort of the everyman action hero—if every guy was fit enough to perform all his own stunts and date a Victoria's Secret model. Statham has been a reader and he recently told us his secret to maintaining leading-man shape through his mid-40s: dining alone. “I don’t eat with people, because there’s a tendency to get social and then to overeat,” he says. (Hey, Jason: We’ll gladly take Rosie out to dinner.)

Katy Perry and John Mayer Couples want to know what is "healthy." Usually, they're afraid they're either having way too much sex or not nearly enough. JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
Either way, it's a legitimate concern that can easily lead to stress, anxiety, depression, selfesteem issues and even the
6
end of an otherwise successful relationship. A quick online search will bring up a huge volume of statistics -- most of them not scientifically generated -- regarding the frequency of sex among long-term, committed couples. The numbers presented in these "studies" vary widely, depending on the source and what the author is trying to promote. So in this instance, Google, Yahoo, Bing and similar search engines are somewhat useless. Probably the best source for scientifically reliable data on this topic comes fromGeneral Social Survey, which has tracked American sexual behaviors since the 1970s. According to the GSS, JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
married couples have sex an average of 58 times per year. However, this number lumps 25-year-old newlyweds into the same pool as senior citizens who've celebrated their golden anniversary, and it does not include unmarried long-term couples. There may or may not be much difference in the sexual behaviors of married and unmarried committed couples, but there is almost certainly a difference between young newlyweds and their grandparents, which means the 58 times per year number is not overlymeaningful. Recent GSS surveys support this assertion, showing that couples in their 20s have sex 111 times per year on average, with frequency
7
dropping steadily, about 20 percent per decade, as couples age. In other words, young couples have sex slightly more than twice per week on average, with the number declining steadily over time. OMG! My Numbers Are Off! If you just read the statistics provided above and thought, "Uh-oh, there is something wrong with me/us," you're not alone. Maybe you and your partner have done it 10 times this week and it's only Tuesday, or maybe you've not been physically intimate since your neighbor's last Fourth of July party. Either way, there is no need to freak out. You're not necessarily hyper-sexed if you're well above the norm, nor are JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
you automatically undersexed if you're far below the norm. Human sexual arousal patterns cut a very wide swath in terms of what people like to do and how often they like to do it. And frequency of sexual arousal and behavior can be influenced by any number of factors, including: • Age • Life circumstances • Physical and emotional health • Medications • Having children at home • Hormonal imbalance • Recent losses and grief • Substance use and abuse • Workload and stress • Relationship status • A history of previous trauma or abuse • Diminished physical attraction and a corresponding lack of
8
intimacy • Secrets and lack of relationship trust The simple truth is that everyone is different and there is not a "norm" for sexual behavior. Some people are heterosexual; others are homosexual or bisexual. Some people are into a fetish or kink; others are relatively "vanilla." Some people like to get it on a lot; others can take it or leave it. That's the way it is, that's who we are and there is nothing inherently right or wrong with any of it. As long as your sexual behavior (or lack of it) isn't illegal, affecting your self-esteem, troubling to your relationship or leading to negative life consequences, why worry? JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
Sexless and Happy? Really? Sure. Maybe. People who are having a lot of sex are usually pretty OK with that. Typically, they only worry about things if they are sexually addicted and their carnal compulsivity is causing problems. Frankly, most couples who worry about frequency of sex tend to fear their frequency is significantly below the curve, so to speak. This is especially true for couples who qualify as "sexless." Generally speaking, a sexless marriage is one in which a committed couple has sex less than 10 times per year. About 15 to 20 percent of long-term couples fall into this category. This may or may not be an issue, depending on the couple. Some
9
couples, especially older pairs who've been together a long time, are perfectly fine with once or twice a year or even not at all, thank you very much. Not having sex doesn't mean these couples aren't deeply in love, monogamously committed and happy together. It just means that sex isn't as high a priority for them as it is for some of their friends, neighbors or people they see on TV and in the movies. That said, many couples do find infrequent sex to be an issue. In fact, numerousstudies have shown that lack of sex corresponds directly with marital instability and thoughts of leaving a relationship. Sometimes one person's sex drive just doesn't match his or her partner's sex drive. This JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
issue often arises in couples counseling. Sometimes both partners want to be sexual, but one (or both) is not interested in sex with his or her spouse. This can be caused by any number of factors, including lingering resentments, lack of emotional intimacy, diminished physical attraction, differing sexual interests, etc. Lack of sexual interest may also be the result of an underlying psychological condition such as depression, anxiety, drug or alcohol addiction, a behavioral addiction, low self-esteem, unresolved childhood trauma, an attachment deficit disorder, etc. And there is always the possibility that one partner may be having an affair.
10
Let's face it: If a person is getting his or her sexual needs met on the side (with regular porn use or in-vivo), he or she is likely to be less interested in sex at home. Should You Be Worried? Happily, less sex does not automatically equate to less love, happiness and fulfillment. For most couples, especially those who've been together for a number of years, companionship, reliability and a sense of mutual trust are far more meaningful than a lot of hot, sweaty sex. Sure, there are couples out there who've been married for 30 years who're still hot for each other, and good for them. For the rest of us, our libidos tend to droop in tandem with our aging JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
body parts. Diminishing hormone levels, the aging process and the distractions of life tend to lower our sex drives (and our ability to perform), and there's not a whole lot we can do about it. Of course, if you and your partner have gone several weeks or even months without sex and the lack of activity is troubling you, you may want to consider some changes. Usually a little bit of effort is enough to revive a flagging sex life, especially if the emotional connection between you and your partner remains strong. Often in such cases the real issue is that things have gone a little stale. If you find that to be the case in your relationship, try
11
one or more of the following tips: • Schedule it. Sure, this sounds horribly unromantic, but really it's quite the opposite. Setting aside and committing to a time to be emotionally and physically intimate gives you and your partner something to look forward to. Plan a relaxing shower and mutual massage as part of foreplay. After all, who doesn't look forward to a massage? Couples who search together for the right scent of massage oil are off to a great start. • Mix it up. Perhaps you've always had that special secret fantasy, but you've never mentioned it or acted on it. Now is the time to talk about it with your partner. Who knows, maybe he or she is willing JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
to try it. And be sure to ask about his or her secret fantasy. It might be a turnon for you, too. Just make sure that if you both say yes, you really mean to say yes. No regrets, please. • Go away. If you've always done it in the bedroom, try the kitchen, or a hotel, or a cruise ship, or a cabin in the woods. It's amazing what a little change of venue can do for a stale sex life. Many couples take frequent weekends or holidays just for this purpose. • Be romantic. Give your partner a gift "just because." Write a list of things you love about your partner and give it to him or her. Plan a surprise date that involves an activity you know your partner enjoys (even if it's not
12
your favorite thing to do). Take your art-lover wife to a museum, your sportsjunkie husband to a pro football game. It is also important to recognize that you and your partner can be physically intimate without actually having sex. Holding hands, looking into each other's
eyes, cuddling, spooning, massage and just taking the time to listen to your loved one's feelings can all serve to build emotional closeness. Plus, all of the above are terrific forms of sexual foreplay should you wish to go all the way.
Health benefits of sex
Physical Wellness Physical Appearance An active sex life may yield benefits such as a more youthful appearance. In addition, sexual activity JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
burns calories and fat, and it has been suggested that people with active sex lives tend to exercise more frequently and have better dietary habits than those who are less sexually
13
active. Likewise, physical fitness can improve sexual health. Sleep The intimacy hormone, oxytocin, is released during orgasm. Studies show that oxytocin promotes better sleep. And better sleep has been linked to stronger immunity and longer lifespan. Disease Prevention and Management Your chances of having heart problems decrease if you stay sexually active. This is due to higher levels of oxytocin, a neurotransmitter (brain chemical) that is produced during arousal and orgasm. JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
Research has shown that sexual activity and orgasms may bolster the immune system in women and men. Men In men, high frequency of ejaculation (more than 21 times per month) is related to a decrease in the risk of prostate cancer. Although results are conflicting, some studies have shown that the quality of sperm motility decreases with abstinence. In healthy men these declines can take effect after only five days of abstinence. Men who have frequent orgasms, whether through masturbation or sex, may experience a lower risk of
14
developing prostate cancer. Women Sexual activity and orgasm during menstruation has a potentially protective effect against endometriosis. Women who continue to be sexually active after they reach menopause, with a partner or through masturbation, are less likely to have significant vaginal atrophy and are more likely to report sufficient vaginal lubrication. Emotional Well-Being and Relationship Improvement Sexual experience and satisfaction are closely correlated with overall JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
quality of life. They increase your sense of well-being and personal satisfaction. Sexual activity is negatively correlated with the risk and incidence of psychiatric illness, depression, and suicide. Sexual activity and orgasm reduce stress. Sexual satisfaction is also associated with the stability of relationships. Consistent mutual sexual pleasure increases bonding within a relationship. It has also been demonstrated that coupled partners have increased relationship satisfaction when they fulfill one another's sexual desires. A study of young married women found that those who reported masturbating
15
also reported greater marital satisfaction.
SIGNS THAT A MAN TRULY LOVES YOU He loves you, he loves you not. If you suspect your new boyfriend has fallen head-over-heels for you, look for the hard-tomiss signs that he’s in love with you. Signs that he is in love with you: He treats you with respect When a man is in love with a woman, he respects her. He cares about the JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
details of her life. He treats her well. If your guy values your opinions, compliments your character, celebrates your accomplishments, pays attention to details, and even accommodates your quirky habits — He stocks the fridge with Diet Coke even though he can’t stand the stuff, for example — you’ve got a keeper who’s falling fast and hard for you. Signs that he is in love with you: You’re always on his mind Does he send you funny texts during the day? Do songs, signs and hilarious headlines remind him of you? Does he Google last night’s unresolved debate — “Which is healthier: ice cream or gelato?” — when he’s at work? When you
16
become a very present part of his day even when you’re apart, he’s invested in the relationship. Signs that he is in love with you: He compromises Love can soften the heart. Being right isn’t as important as doing right by the other person. When your beau starts to meet you in the middle on topics he’s typically stubborn about — Maybe he’s a movie snob suddenly willing to let you pick a flick he’d otherwise never watch — he’s leading with his heart instead of his head. Signs of selflessness are huge indicators that he’s in love.
JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
Signs that he is in love with you: He touches you in public Most guys have no qualms about touching their girlfriends in private. With public displays of affection, however, they can be a little more hesitant. When your man puts his arm around you in public, he’s both proudly announcing to the world that you’re together and making a protective gesture. Another love gesture: when he starts offering the hugs and cuddles you crave, with no expectation of sex. He wants to serve you with physical touch, not use it just to get what he wants. Signs that he is in love with you: He wants to take care of you
17
Women often roll their eyes at men’s “fix it” instincts; and while he may not be able to fix every bad day, the fact that he tries only points to the fact that he deeply cares about you. He wants to make things better. He wants to provide for you, practically and emotionally. He wants to make you smile. When he puts in the effort to comfort and reassure you, he’s saying “I love you” in both word and deed. Signs that he is in love with you: He wants you to love his family Does he want you to meet everyone who’s important to him? When he’s ready to introduce you to people who matter most — and is equally eager to meet your friends and family — he JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
has no intentions of going anywhere. He’s proud to be with you and wants his family to fall in love with you, too. Signs that he is in love with you: He’s not afraid to fight — or apologize Sometimes it takes a fight or two to understand just how strong a relationship is. A man in love is one who isn’t afraid of conflict — or apologies. Instead, he fights fair, respects you when things get rocky, listens to your perspective, hates to see you upset, and wants to resolve things well. “Love means never having to say you’re sorry” is the most inaccurate movie tagline ever. (Sorry, “Love Story.”) Love means dropping the pride, admitting when you’re
18
wrong and never being afraid to say you’re sorry. Signs that he is in love with you: “We” has replaced “I” Listen to his word choices. When he starts using words like “we,” “us,” and “Team Awesome” — Each guy will have his own way to describe the unit you’ve become — he’s not thinking of himself as a single man anymore. You’re now part of his life. And he loves that. Signs that he is in love with you: When he talks
JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
about the future, you’re in it Does he make plans for the future that include you? Did he invite you to his buddy’s wedding next fall? Does he joke about your future children together? When he’s got a future with you on his mind, he’s already decided that he has no intentions of letting you go. Signs that he is in love with you: He says so If he says he loves you, believe him. A man in love can’t keep it to himself for long.
SIGNS THAT A WOMAN TRULY LOVES YOU
She Tells You First of all, there’s nothing like the truth, so if she comes right at you telling you how deeply she’s in love with you, without being challenged or asked to confess that by someone else, chances are that she most probably is in love with you. The way she reveals the truth to you combined with the look in her eyes should prompt you into determining if she’s 100% sure of her love for you or not. A woman in love will show a lot of interest in the life of a particular guy, so if she starts being extremely curious, sincerely and profoundly interested in every aspect of your life, asking about
your day, wanting to know everything about your past, as well as present life, you should stop second guessing yourself as her love for you seems pretty genuine. She Knows You Completely A woman in love will know exactly what to do to make you smile, she will be the first to figure out what makes you feel special, and she won’t ever make an inappropriate gift to you as she knows all too well what excites you and what not. You’ll get the feeling that she knows you even better than your best friend, and she will rival with him to earn your attention.
21
Another sign proving she’s in love with you is that she will begin acting very affectionate and attentive to make sure your every need and desire is properly met. She’ll grow very empathic towards you, and really sensitive about everything in connection with you. Being in her company will make you believe no one understands you better than her for she will make a lot of efforts in trying to know you and figure out the parts you might have refused to tell her. Increase in Communication If she’s in love with you, don’t be surprised if you notice a heavy increase in the texts, e-mails, messages and phone calls JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
you receive from her. She will most likely be without a purpose when getting in touch with you for a woman in love will immediately think about you and miss you, and she won’t resist the urge of hearing your voice or receiving a few words from you. A woman in love will try her best to be around you as much as possible. She will postpone appointments, be late for meetings, she will cancel something less important in a heartbeat, she will skip classes, her usual itinerary will be deeply affected as she wants to spend as much time with you as possible. She won’t think twice about clearing up her busy schedule for you without letting you
22
know about it. If she was a really busy person when you met her, she will suddenly look so available you’ll tend to ask her if she began her holiday or if she lost her job. There will be nothing stopping her to be with you, so you might find yourself bumping into her even if you knew she left town for a certain purpose.
If she’s in love with you, she will confess how great she feels around you and how much her life has changed and been enriched since she met you. Everything in connection with you will make her feel wonderful, and she won’t hesitate in letting you know how much influence you gained in her life.
A woman in love feels good talking to that special someone, so you’ll notice that she will cease every opportunity of talking with you, and she will share secrets and intimate things for she will blindly trust you like no other. You’ll be surprised to know things that nobody else knows.
Body Language and Gifts
JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
A sign that she’s in love with you can be translated through her making unexpected, yet pleasant things to surprise you, whether it’s showing up at your workplace with dinner, offering you gifts in the form of things you always wanted to have or waiting beside your door
23
to accompany you to your doctor’s appointment when she knows how ‘eager’ you are to step into a clinic. A woman in love enjoys being physically close to the person she appreciates so much, so you should guess her profound feelings from her body language. She will touch you often, and not necessarily in a sexual way. She will be caught glazing at you often, she will blush and smile when she sees you or when you’re brought into a discussion, and you might even notice her goose bumps when she’s near you. She will talk very excitedly about the future, making plans regarding it JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
and telling you about the things she wants the two of you to do together. It does not necessarily have to picture you as a cliché with the house and the white fence, but rather she will make subtle hints, whilst imagining building a future with you in it. Introductions If she’s in love with you, she will talk about you with others. Women cannot stop themselves from thinking and talking about a person whom they want to build a relationship with, so the best way to know if she’s in love with you is by asking her closest ones if she mentions you or not. Chances are that everyone knows about her love for you, you being the last one
24
to finally know. Once she’s in love with you, she will be deeply interested in wanting to know your parents and your friends, and she will also introduce you to theirs. Everyone will notice how she lights up when you’re around. Jealousy and Worry When it comes to women who are in love, the people around them including you will notice a sudden makeover in the way they look. Her makeup, hairstyle, clothes and accessories will change as she will do anything to try and impress you. If she’s in love with you, she won’t be bothered with dealing with other guys, as you’re
JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
now the only one she focuses her attention on. If she notices other women in your company, she will get jealous, and a hint of jealousy is one of the best signs of making you realize you won her heart. A woman in love will worry about you, and won’t be able to stay away if she notices you’re having problems. She will let you know of her availability in case you need her, and she will be deeply concerned and interested in any situation that troubles you. She will also feel the need to take care of you – women have a natural instinct to attend to the needs of the people they care about without being asked for their help.

Madonna has thanked fellow pop star Rita Ora for speaking out in her defence following the

global backlash the music icon received for her onstage kiss with rapper Drake - which appeared to leave him repulsed.
The 56-year-old found herself becoming a target online after she indulged in a passionate French kiss with the Canadian rapper while she performed new track Human Nature at the Coachella Festival on Sunday evening. Rita Ora took to Instagram to defend the global superstar and her kind words did not go unnoticed as Madonna reposted the message, adding her own comments. Are Johnny Depp And Amber Heard On The Verge of Divorce? ‘He’s Drinking Too Much,’ Source Says Johnny Depp may be on his way to beating Kim Kardashian’s record for
super-short celebrity marriage. In Touch Weekly reports that Depp and his recent bride, Amber Heard, are likely headed for divorce after only 62 days of marriage. A source close to Depp and Heard told the magazine that their married life hasn’t been blissful since the wedding, which took place earlier this year. The source claims that the two movie stars are barely speaking to each other, and Depp’s love of drinking and partying is ruining their relationship. “Amber is constantly worried about him,” the source told the magazine.
34
“He’ll go days without calling or texting her.” Amber, the source says, is constantly calling Depp while he’s on the set of Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in Australia. “He’s constantly partying and it’s caused huge fights with Amber. It’s been hard for them,” the source continues. It doesn’t help that they’re on opposite sides of the of the world right now, as Heard is on location in London shooting The Danish Girl.
Both Johnny and Amber have declined to comment on the state of their marriage. They got JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
married just over two months ago in a private beach wedding in the Bahamas. Depp is in his early 50s while Amber is 28. According to the Hollywood Gossip, rumors about Johnny Depp’s worsening drinking problem have been swirling around Hollywood for a couple of months now. In November of 2014, he gave what looked like a drunken acceptance speech at the Hollywood Film Awards. More recently, in March of this year, Depp failed to show up at a press conference after claiming that he was fighting a mythical beast. Hopefully Depp can clean up his act long enough to

complete filming of the latest Pirates of the Caribbean installment. The movie has already been plagued with problems since filming began. In March, production had to be
interrupted due to an injury on Depp’s hand. This not only set back the $250 million film’s timeline, it also put hundreds of Australian workers on unpaid downtime.
What was originally expected to be a two-week delay turned into a monthlong interruption when Johnny decided to return
to Los Angeles for treatment. Filming is expected to resume on April 15. The film’s release date of July 7,

HOW TO KEEP YOUR TEETH HEALTHY
In addition to brushing and flossing, a healthful diet (with natural or added fluoride) protects teeth from decay and keeps the gums healthy. Read on to discover how to keep your smile safe and strong.
Tooth decay (cavities and dental caries) and gum disease are caused by colonies of bacteria that constantly coat the teeth
39
with a sticky film called plaque. If plaque is not brushed away, these bacteria break down the sugars and starches in foods to produce acids that wear away the tooth enamel. The plaque also hardens into tartar, which can lead to gum inflammation, or gingivitis.
during pregnancy. Make sure that your children’s teeth get off to a good start by eating sensibly during pregnancy. Particularly important is calcium, which helps to form strong teeth and bones, and vitamin D, which the body needs to absorb calcium.
A well-balanced diet provides the minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients essential for healthy teeth and gums. Fluoride, occurring naturally in foods and water, or added to the water supply, can be a powerful tool in fighting decay. It can reduce the rate of cavities by as much as 60 percent.
You need lots of calcium for healthy teeth and gums. Low-fat dairy products, fortified soy and rice beverages, canned salmon or sardines (with bones), almonds, and dark green leafy vegetables are excellent sources of calcium.
Dental Health Guidelines Start right by eating right
You need vitamin D to help absorb the calcium.
JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
40
Vitamin D is obtained from fluid milk, fortified soy and rice beverages, margarine, fatty fish such as salmon, and moderate exposure to the sun. Fluoride is key. To a large extent, cavities can be prevented by giving children fluoride in the first few years of life. Fluoride is supplied through fluoridated water (not all municipalities fluoridate their water supply, however), beverages made with fluoridated water, tea, and some fish, as well as many brands of toothpaste and some mouthwash. Fluoride supplements are available for children who don’t have access to fluoridated drinking water. It is wise to check to see if the water supply in your JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
area is fluoridated. Excess consumption of fluoride can cause mottling of the teeth. Also needed are phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin A, and beta carotene. In addition to calcium and fluoride, minerals needed for the formation of tooth enamel include phosphorus (richly supplied in meat, fish, and eggs) and magnesium (found in whole grains, spinach, and bananas). Vitamin A also helps build strong bones and teeth. Good sources of beta carotene, which the body turns into vitamin A, include orange-colored fruits and vegetables and the dark green leafy vegetables. Children are particularly vulnerable
41
to tooth decay; parents should: 1. Provide a good diet throughout childhood 2. Brush children’s teeth until they’re mature enough to do a thorough job by themselves (usually by 6 or 7 years old) 3. Supervise twice-daily brushing and flossing thereafter 4. Never put babies or toddlers to bed accompanied by a bottle of milk (which contains the natural sugar lactose), juice, or other sweet drink
the only culprit. Although sugary foods, including cookies, candies, and sodas, are major offenders, starchy foods (such as breads and cereals) also play an important part in tooth decay. When starches mix with amylase, an enzyme in saliva, the result is an acid bath that erodes the enamel and makes teeth more susceptible to decay. If starchy foods linger in the mouth, the acid bath is prolonged, and the potential for damage is all the greater.
5. Never dip pacifiers in honey or syrup 1. The sugar factor. Sucrose, most familiar to us as granulated sugar, is the leading cause of tooth decay, but it is far from JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
Be careful when eating dried fruits. Dried fruits can have an adverse effect
42
on teeth, because they are high in sugar and cling to the teeth. Even unsweetened fruit juices can contribute to tooth decay — they are acidic and contain relatively high levels of simple sugars. Fresh fruits, especially apples, are better choices. Fresh fruit, although both sweet and acidic, is much less likely to cause a problem, because chewing stimulates the saliva flow. Saliva decreases mouth acidity and washes away food particles. Apples, for example, have been called nature’s toothbrush because they stimulate the gums, increase saliva flow and reduce the build-up of cavity-causing bacteria. A chronically dry mouth also contributes to decay. Saliva flow slows during JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
sleep; going to bed without brushing the teeth is especially harmful. Certain drugs, including those used for high blood pressure, also cut down saliva flow. 2. Gum disease. More teeth are lost through gum disease than through tooth decay. Gum disease is likely to strike anyone who neglects oral hygiene or eats a poor diet. Particularly at risk are people with alcoholism, malnutrition, or AIDS/HIV infection or who are being treated with steroid drugs or certain cancer chemotherapies. Regular brushing and flossing help to prevent puffy, sore, and inflamed gums. Gingivitis, a very common
43
condition that causes the gums to redden, swell, and bleed, is typically caused by the gradual buildup of plaque. Treatment requires good dental hygiene and removal of plaque by a dentist or dental hygienist. Left untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis — an advanced infection of the gums that causes teeth to loosen and fall out. There may even be more serious consequences of gum disease. Studies have shown a link between poor oral health and heart disease. Bleeding gums apparently provide an entry port for bacteria or viruses that can cause heart problems. Women with tooth or gum problems are also more likely to give birth to premature babies. JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
Bleeding gums may also be a sign that your intake of vitamin C is deficient. Be sure that your diet includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables every day; munching on hard, fibrous foods, such as a celery stick or carrot, stimulates the gums. 3. Helpful foods. You can protect your teeth by concluding meals with foods that do not promote cavities and may even prevent them. For instance, aged cheeses help prevent cavities if consumed at the end of a meal. Chewing sugarless gum stimulates the flow of saliva, which decreases acid and flushes out food particles. Rinsing your mouth and brushing your teeth after eating are important strategies to
44
prevent cavities. Here are some tips: Consume Plenty Of 1. Calcium-rich foods, ods, such as low-fat fat milk, yogurt, and cheese.
Perfect celebrity teeth smiles!
2. Fresh fruits and vegetables for vitamins A and C, and for chewing in order to promote healthy gums. 3. Tea, which is a good source of fluoride. Limit 1. Dried fruits and other sticky foods that lodge between the teeth. Avoid 1. Sweet drinks and snacks. 2. Steady sipping of acidic drinks for prolonged periods.

PREGNANCYRELATED DEATHS The death of a woman during pregnancy, at delivery, or soon after delivery is a tragedy for her family and for society as a whole. Sadly, about
45
650 women die each year in the United States as a result of pregnancy or delivery complications. During pregnancy, a woman's body goes through many changes. These changes are entirely normal, but may become very important in case there are complications or problems. A pregnancyrelated death is defined as the death of a woman during pregnancy or within one year of the end of pregnancy from a pregnancy complication, a chain of events initiated by pregnancy, or the aggravation of an unrelated condition by the physiologic effects of pregnancy.

What can women do to prevent a pregnancyrelated death? Many factors influence pregnancy-related health outcomes. It is important for all women of reproductive age to adopt healthy lifestyles (e.g., maintain a healthy diet and weight, be physically active, quit all substance use for good, prevent injuries) and address any health problems before getting pregnant. Visit your health care provider at recommended scheduled time periods to discuss if or when you are thinking about getting pregnant. This is important to make sure you receive appropriate medical advice and care, and have healthy pregnancies.
46
A healthy pregnancy begins before conception and continues with prenatal care, with early recognition and management of complications if they arise. Health care providers can help women prepare for pregnancy and for any potential problems during pregnancy. Early initiation of prenatal care by pregnant women, and continuous monitoring of pregnancy by health providers, are key to preventing pregnancyrelated complications and death.
In 2013, 289 000 women died from complications JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
related to pregnancy or childbirth. In addition, for every woman who dies in childbirth, around 20 more suffer injury, infection or disease – approximately 10 million women each year. Five direct complications account for most of maternal deaths: haemorrhage, infection, unsafe abortion, eclampsia (very high blood pressure leading to seizures), and obstructed labour. While these are the main causes of maternal death, unavailable, inaccessible, unaffordable, or poor quality care is fundamentally responsible. Maternal deaths are detrimental to social development and wellbeing, as some 1 million children are left
47
motherless each year. These children are more likely to die within 1-2 years of their mothers' death. Women need not die in childbirth. We must give a young woman the information and support she needs to control her reproductive health, help her through a pregnancy, and care for her and her newborn well into childhood. The vast majority of maternal deaths could be prevented if women had access to quality family planning services, skilled care during pregnancy, childbirth and after delivery, or post-abortion care services and where permissible, safe abortion services. 15% of pregnancies and JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
childbirths need emergency obstetric care because of risks that are difficult to predict. A working health system with skilled personnel is key to saving these women's lives.
Maternal death is defined as "The death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and the site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management, but not from accidental or incidental causes." The number of maternal deaths in 2013 was 293,000 down from 377,000 in 1990 The top
48
causes of death are: post partum bleeding (15%), complications from unsafe abortion (15%), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (10%), postpartum infections (8%), and obstructed labour (6%). Causes Factors that increase maternal death can be direct or indirect. Generally, there is a distinction between a direct maternal death that is the result of a complication of the pregnancy, delivery, or management of the two, and an indirect maternal death. that is a pregnancyrelated death in a patient with a preexisting or newly developed health problem unrelated to JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
pregnancy. Fatalities during but unrelated to a pregnancy are termed accidental, incidental, or nonobstetrical maternal deaths. The most common causes are post partum bleeding (15%), complications from unsafe abortion (15%), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (10%), postpartum infections (8%), and obstructed labour (6%). Other causes include blood clots (3%) and preexisting conditions (28%).Indirect causes are malaria, anaemia, HIV/AIDS, and cardiovascular disease, all of which may complicate pregnancy or be aggravated by it.
49
Sociodemographic factors such as age, access to resources and income level are significant indicators of maternal outcomes. Young mothers face higher risks of complications and death during pregnancy than older mothers, especially adolescents aged 15 years or younger. Adolescents have higher risks for postpartum hemorrhage, puerperal endometritis, operative vaginal delivery, episiotomy, low birth weight, preterm delivery, and small-for-gestationalage infants, all of which can lead to maternal death. Structural support and family support influences maternal outcomes. Furthermore, social disadvantage and social isolation adversely affects maternal health which can JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
lead to increases in maternal death. Additionally, lack of access to skilled medical care during childbirth, the travel distance to the nearest clinic to receive proper care, number of prior births, barriers to accessing prenatal medical care and poor infrastructure all increase maternal deaths. Unsafe abortion is another major cause of maternal death. According to the World Health Organization, every eight minutes a woman dies from complications arising from unsafe abortions. Complications include hemorrhage, infection, sepsis and genital trauma Globally, preventable deaths from improperly performed procedures
50
constitute 13% of maternal mortality, and 25% or more in some countries where maternal mortality from other causes is relatively low, making unsafe abortion the leading single cause of maternal mortality worldwide. Measurement The four measures of maternal death are the maternal mortality ratio (MMR), maternal mortality rate, lifetime risk of maternal death and proportion of maternal deaths among deaths of women of reproductive years (PM). Maternal mortality ratio (MMR): the ratio of the number of maternal deaths during a given time period per 100,000 live births JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
during the same timeperiod. The MMR is used as a measure of the quality of a health care system. Maternal mortality rate (MMRate): the number of maternal deaths in a population divided by the number of women of reproductive age, usually expressed per 1,000 women. Lifetime risk of maternal death: refers to the probability that a 15year-old female will die eventually from a maternal cause if she experiences throughout her lifetime the risks of maternal death and the overall levels of fertility and mortality that are observed for a given population. The adult lifetime risk of maternal mortality can be derived using either the maternal
51
Proportion of maternal deaths among deaths of women of reproductive age (PM): the number of maternal deaths in a given time period divided by the total deaths among women aged 15–49 years. Approaches to measuring maternal mortality includes civil registration system, household surveys, census, reproductive age mortality studies (RAMOS) and verbal autopsies.
rates reached very high levels in maternity institutions in the 1800s, sometimes climbing to 40 percent of birthgiving women (see Historical mortality rates of puerperal fever). At the beginning of the 1900s, maternal death rates were around 1 in 100 for live births. Currently, there are an estimated 275,000 maternal deaths each year. Public health, technological and policy approaches are steps that can be taken to drastically reduce the global maternal death burden.

and blood transfusion, and better prenatal care. Technologies have been designed for resource poor settings that have been effective in reducing maternal deaths as well. The non-pneumatic antishock garment is a lowtechnology pressure device that decreases
blood loss, restores vital signs and helps buy time in delay of women receiving adequate emergency care during obstetric hemorrhage. It has proven to be a valuable resource. Condoms used as uterine tamponades have also been effective in stopping post-partum hemorrhage.

JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
Most maternal deaths are avoidable, as the healthcare solutions to prevent or manage complications are well known. Improving access to antenatal care in pregnancy, skilled care during childbirth, and care and support in the weeks after childbirth will reduce maternal deaths significantly. It is particularly important that all births be attended by skilled health professionals, as timely management and treatment can make the difference between life and death. To improve maternal health, barriers that limit access to quality maternal health services must be identified and addressed at all levels of the health system. Recommendations for
reducing maternal mortality include access to health care, access to family planning services, and emergency obstetric care, funding and intrapartum care. Reduction in unnecessary obstetric surgery has also been suggested. Family planning approaches include avoiding pregnancy at too young of an age or too old of an age and spacing births. Access to primary care for women even before they become pregnant is essential along with access to contraceptives. Policy The biggest global policy initiative for maternal health came from the United Nations'
54
Millennium Declaration which created the Millennium Development Goals. The fifth goal of the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) initiative is to reduce the maternal mortality rate by three quarters between 1990 and 2015 and to achieve universal access to reproductive health by 2015.
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight international development goals that were officially established following the Millennium Summit of the United Nations in 2000. JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
Trends through 2010 can be viewed in a report written jointly by the WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, and the World Bank. Countries and local governments have taken political steps in reducing maternal deaths. Researchers at the Overseas Development Institute studied maternal health systems in four apparently similar countries: Rwanda, Malawi, Niger, and Uganda. In comparison to the other three countries, Rwanda has an excellent recent record of improving maternal death rates. Based on their investigation of these varying country case studies, the researchers conclude that improving maternal health depends on three key factors: 1.
55
reviewing all maternal health-related policies frequently to ensure that they are internally coherent; 2. enforcing standards on providers of maternal health services; 3. any local solutions to problems discovered should be promoted, not discouraged. In terms of aid policy, proportionally, aid given to improve maternal mortality rates has shrunken as other public health issues, such as HIV/AIDS, have become major international concerns. Maternal health aid contributions tend to be lumped together with newborn and child health, so it is difficult to assess how much aid is given directly to maternal health JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
to help lower the rates of maternal mortality. Regardless, there has been progress in reducing maternal mortality rates internationally. Epidemiology Maternal deaths and disabilities are leading contributors in women's disease burden with an estimated 275,000 women killed each year in childbirth and pregnancy worldwide. In 2011, there were approximately 273,500 maternal deaths (uncertainty range, 256,300 to 291,700). Forty-five percent of postpartum deaths occur within 24 hours. Ninetynine percent of maternal deaths occur in developing countries.
How to boost your beauty in ten simple steps: from getting down and dirty in the bedroom to grooming your eyebrows, being more beautiful is easy when you make a few small changes to your routine. Here are our top 10 ways to make you look and feel irresistible.
57
Beauty tip 1: Exfoliate It’s often hard to keep up with our skin. One minute we’re smothering it in moisturiser, the next it’s back to being dull and flakey. To compliment your moisturiser and ensure that your skin stays lovelier for longer, make sure you leave extra time to exfoliate daily. Skin continually produces new cells and, as the new cells appear, the dead ones tend JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
to sit on top of the skin making it appear dry and dull. When this happens, there’s not much point in moisturising. Why waste your expensive body butter on dead skin cells? Try buttering up after you’ve buffed the old cells off, and you’ll notice a drastic change. Beauty tip 2: Have sex Getting down and dirty is the ultimate beauty booster. Just 15 minutes a
58
day spent doing the deed leaves your cheeks flushed; your lips lusciously red; and your skin glowing and beautiful. Studies have shown that regular romps increase blood flow and bring essential nutrients and oxygen to the skin, which flush out harmful toxins and make us appear younger. Plus, having someone run their fingers through your tresses can give it that gorgeous mussed-up bed head look, and we all like a bit of vava-voom from time to time. Beauty tip 3: Ditch the alcohol and cigarettes Drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes doesn’t do our skin any favours. Smoking allows a JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
staggering 4000 toxic substances into the body during every puff, and too much alcohol causes skin to dry out and eyes to become puffy – not the best start for boosting your natural beauty. Quit smoking, and only drink in moderation to improve your skin’s elasticity and reduce puffy eyes. This is a sure-fire way to make you look younger and more beautiful. Beauty tip 4: Rest The phrase “beauty sleep” is famous for a reason; sleep really does make you beautiful. During periods of deep sleep our cells renew themselves, and lack of sleep – or poor quality of sleep – leaves us looking and feeling a bit worse for wear. If you
59
have trouble getting your beauty sleep, try and relax. Add a few drops of aromatherapy oils to your bath, try deep-breathing breathing exercises, and avoid caffeinated drinks before you head to bed. Beauty tip 5: Strengthen your hair with protein Keratin – a type of protein – is the key structural component of our hair and nails. By eating protein proteinrich foods we can reinforce the keratin in our hair to make it healthier and stronger. It’s ’s not all about what you put on your hair, but what you put in your body too. Dietician Dawn Jackson explains that “the foundation of all our new hair, skin, and nail growth is in the nutrients we eat”, JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
so it’s a good idea to boost the natural protein in your hair by eating protein-rich protein foods such as eggs, nuts, seeds, shellfish and meat for stronger, healthier locks. Beauty tip 6: Groom your eyebrows
Few things can change your look as quickly and drastically as nicely plucked brows. The right brow shapee can really frame your face and compliment your favourite features, whilst bushy
60
brows distract attention away from your best features. There are many different ways of removing your brow hair too: plucking, threading, tweezing and waxing – just find the way that suits you best and you’re well on your way to being more beautiful in an instant. Beauty tip 7: Be healthy with fruit, veg, and water It’s a beauty tip that we’ve heard time and time again, but it’s true: we are what we eat, and being healthy on the inside makes us even more beautiful on the outside. This tip is pretty straight-forward; drink plenty of water to flush out harmful toxins in your skin and increase skin’s JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
elasticity; get plenty of exercise to sweat out the toxins; and eat all of your fruit and vegetables for vital nutrients that will make your skin glow – simple, easy ways to boost your beauty. Beauty tip 8: Wear mineral makeup Don’t clog your pores up with a thick, heavy foundation that won’t allow your skin to breathe. Instead, opt for kinder ways to cover up imperfections such as mineral makeup or BB creams. Most mineral powders even help to prevent spots whilst BB creams moisturise your skin and even out skin tone without clogging your pores.
61
Beauty tip 9: Go for a brisk walk A brisk walk is an excellent way to boost your circulation and get beautiful glowing skin. Walking improve your sleep, enhance mental function, and help to counteract depression. This will all reflect in your complexion as you appear happier and healthier. You might be able to get rosy cheeks from a pot of blusher, but you won’t get the beautifully natural glow of flushed, healthy skin by using a makeup palette.
It’s important to protect your skin whatever the weather, particularly if yours is sensitive. As temperatures dip throughout the winter, we are more likely to crank the heating up, which can have a detrimental impact upon our skin by drying it out and making it appear aged. Summer skin can be dried out too, causing it to look dry, dull and flakey. To help prevent dry skin, make moisturising a regular part of your routine. Flare-free skin makes us look and feel beautiful.

Despite countless rows of products labeled "for sensitive skin" on store shelves, treating an unruly complexion isn't a one-size-fits-all affair. "Sensitive" products that work well for your friend's skin could just as easily wreak havoc on yours, so it's important to get beyond the general label and figure out what's really bugging your skin. Here, six common symptoms, and the right ways to treat them: Your Sensitive Symptoms: Taut and itchy skin It might mean: Your cleanser is too drying. "It's the number one culprit behind unnecessary irritation," says skin care expert and celebrity esthetician RenĂŠe Rouleau. Avoid sodium lauryl sulfate and ammonium laureth sulfate, harsh detergents commonly used in facial cleansers and soaps that break down the natural lipids in skin. When this happens, it's like a double whammy. "Little invisible cracks in the skin form, causing moisture JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
63
to seep out and allowing irritants in. Suddenly, other products in your routine that didn't irritate your skin before might now," she says. The fix: "Don't wash your face with soap more than once a day," says New Orleans-based dermatologist Mary Lupo, MD. "In the morning, wash with a face moisturizer instead of a cleanser or simply splash water on skin to maintain moisture. Then apply a moisturizer with an SPF." Try CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion AM with SPF 30 ($13; drugstores) or Vichy Capital Soleil Daily Moisturizer Cream with SPF 15 ($32; vichyusa.com).
Then, wash your face at night with a sulfate-free cleanser, like RenĂŠe Rouleau Gentle Gel JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
64
Cleanser ($35.50; reneerouleau.com) or The Body Shop Aloe Calming Facial Cleanser ($14.50; thebodyshopusa.com). Find natural remedies for acne, allergies, and more! Order your copy of The New Healing Herbs Your Sensitive Symptoms: Burning and stinging It might mean: Anti-aging product overload. Packing too many anti-aging ingredients into your routine can make skin misbehave. First, it's a simple matter of probability, explains Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, MD, PhD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine: "The more products you use, the greater chance one won't agree with your skin." Second, mixing different anti-aging ingredients, like retinoids and alpha hydroxy acids—both of which work by sloughing off dead, dull cells to reveal healthier and more youthful skin underneath—means that you're essentially exfoliating twice, which can seriously strip skin and increase the potential for irritation, she says. (Prevent a skin disaster with Your Guide to Retinols and Retinoids!) The fix: Stick to one moisturizer or serum fortified with anti-agers. Those that include ingredients that build up skin's barrier, like peptides or niacin, will help reduce risk of irritation, notes Dr. Marmur. Two gentle choices: StriVectin-SD for Sensitive Skin ($72, strivectin.com), JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
65
packed with peptides to boost collagen, nitrogenic acid (a form of niacin), and soothing rose and cucumber extracts, or Atopalm Moisturizing Skin Revitalizing Complex ($35;atopalmusa.com) with peptides, vitamin C, and licorice to plump up fine lines and boost brightness.
Your Sensitive Symptoms: Blushing and flushing, sometimes accompanied by tiny red pimples It might mean: You have rosacea. Characterized by blood vessels that swell and produce redness at the slightest agitation—from cold, heat, wind, stress, or spicy foods—the condition traditionally develops after age 30. The exact cause is still unknown, and specific triggers differ for everyone. What experts do know: A liberal, daily application of an SPF 30 is a must. Sun exposure breaks down the supportive structures, like collagen, around blood vessels, exacerbating redness, explains Miami dermatologist Leslie Baumann, MD, author of The Skin Type Solution. The fix: Temper sensitivity with anti-inflammatory soothers, like feverfew, in First Aid Beauty Daily Face Cream ($20,firstaidbeauty.com) or green tea and caffeine in Topix Replenix Serum CF ($67; skinstore.com). Apply sunscreen daily to prevent symptoms from getting worse. Sensitive skin often can't tolerate chemical UV filters, like JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
66
avobenzone, but physical blockers titanium dioxide and zinc oxide protect without irritation. Try Aubrey Organics Natural Sun SPF 30+ Unscented Sensitive Skin ($15.95; Aubrey-organics.com), Dermalogica Super Sensitive Shield SPF 30 ($48; dermalogica.com), and MDSolarSciences Mineral CrĂŠme SPF 50 Broad Spectrum UVA-UVB ($30;mdsolarsciences.com). For serious, persistent rosacea, see your dermatologist, who can recommend the right treatment for your skin.
Your Sensitive Symptoms: Scaly, rough patches on the skin It might mean: You're having an eczema flare-up. When working properly, the top layer of skin acts like a strong film of plastic wrap that seals in hydration and protects deeper layers of skin. Eczema-prone complexions suffer from a faulty barrier that allows water to easily escape, leading to extreme dryness and flakiness. "When irritants like smoke and fragrances then settle on skin, immune cells rush to the area to respond, triggering inflammation," notes Amy Taub, MD, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Northwestern University. Though 90% of people are diagnosed before age 5 and symptoms often fade during childhood, eczema is a
JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
67
chronic condition that may make you more prone to dryness and irritation at any age. Having dry skin doesn't mean you have eczema, though dryness can also make skin more sensitive. Follow the dry skin cleansing advice above and the moisturizing advice below to help boost hydration. The fix: To enhance skin's resilience, apply a humectantbased moisturizer after cleansing while skin is still moist. Try Avène Trixéra + Sélectiose Emollient Cream ($29; aveneusa.com for info on where to buy), Curel Itch Defense Lotion for Dry Itchy Skin ($7.99; drugstores), and Jergens Fragrance Free Sensitive Skin Daily Moisturizer ($6; drugstores)[pagebreak] Your Sensitive Symptoms: Eye-area redness, puffiness, and wrinkles that look like they've appeared overnight It might mean: Your eye area is especially thin and delicate, making it more sensitive. But you may mistakenly blame your eye cream for irritation in this area when nail polish is often the real culprit, says Dr. Fusco. Why? "Many people are allergic to the formaldehyde and toluene in polish—and touching or rubbing your eyes several times a day can trigger a reaction," she says. Fragrances in scented hand lotions and other products can cause similar sensitivities. JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
68
The fix: Apply fragrance-free hand creams. In terms of polish, brands like CND (cnd.com) and Orly (orlybeauty.com) no longer contain those chemicals, but they're still present in many polishes, so read the label or check the Web site of your favorite shade before applying.
Your Sensitive Symptoms: Small red bumps (not pimples) on your face that may itch It might mean: You're allergic to one of your products. During an allergy attack, immune cells in your skin react, causing a cascade of symptoms: first, red bumps, then dryness and flakiness, and finally, a leathery texture, explains Dr. Fusco. Frequent offenders, she says, include topical ingredients like alcohol, fragrance, artificial dyes, and preservatives like parabens. Quell a reaction by applying a .05% over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream for up to 5 days. If inflammation persists, head to the derm. Allergy symptoms may appear a few hours after using the offending product—or up to 2 weeks later. It's important to introduce new products slowly and not all at once, so you can better pinpoint any problems. For people with especially sensitive complexions, try products using a patch test, suggests Rouleau: At night, apply the product JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
69
to the side of your face in a 2-inch-by-2-inch area, following up with your normal routine. If there's no sign of inflammation (such as a rash or swelling) in the morning, use over your entire face the next night. The fix: Of course, you can't eliminate risk of irritation all together, but you can at least decrease it by using products formulated without fragrances, preservatives, and other known allergens. We like VMV Hypoallergenics (vmvhypoallergenics.com) and Derma E's fragrance-free products (dermae.net).

The mountain that remains when the universe is destroyed is not big and is not small. Big and small are comparative categories, and to what could the mountain that remains when the universe is destroyed be compared? Consciousness observes and is appeased. The soul scrambles across the screes. The soul, like the square root of minus 1, is an impossibility that has its uses. Trailing Clouds of Glory Even though I’m an immigrant, the angel with the flaming sword seems fine with me. He unhooks the velvet rope. He ushers me into the club. Some activity in the mosh pit, a banquet here, a panhandler there, a gray curtain drawn down over the infinitely curving lunette, Jupiter in its crescent phase, huge, a vista of a waterfall, with a rainbow in the spray, a few desultory orgies, a billboard of the snub-nosed electric car of the future— the inside is exactly the same as the outside, JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE

On the F train to Manhattan yesterday, I sat across from a family threesome Guatemalan by the look of them— delicate and archaic and Mayan— and obviously undocumented to the bone. They didn’t seem anxious. The mother was laughing and squabbling with the daughter over a knockoff smart phone on which they were playing a video game together. The boy, maybe three, disdained their ruckus. I recognized the scowl on his face, the retrospective, maskless rage of inception. He looked just like my son when my son came out of his mother after thirty hours of labor—the head squashed, the lips swollen, the skin empurpled and hideous with blood and afterbirth. If I wrote that story now— radioactive to the end of time— people, I swear, your eyes would fall out, you couldn’t peel the gloves fast enough from your hands scorched by the firestorms of that shame. Your poor hands. Your poor eyes to see me weeping in my room or boring the tall blonde to death. Once I accused the innocent. Once I bowed and prayed to the guilty. JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California. Her mother was a film-cutter at RKO Studios who, widowed and mentally ill, abandoned her to sequence of foster homes. She was almost smothered to death at two, nearly raped at six. At nine, the LA Orphans' Home paid her a nickel a month for kitchen work while taking back a penny every Sunday for church. At sixteen, she worked in an aircraft plant and married a man she called Daddy; he went into the military, she modeled, they divorced in 1946. She owned 200 books
(including Tolstoy, Whitman, Milton), listened to Beethoven records, studied acting at the Actors' lab in Hollywood, and took literature courses at UCLA downtown. 20th Century Fox gave her a contract but let it lapse a year later. In 1948, Columbia gave her a sixmonth contract, turned her over to coach Natasha Lytess and featured her in the B movie Ladies of the Chorus (1948) in which she sang three numbers : "Every Baby Needs a Da Da Daddy", "Anyone Can Tell I Love You" and "The Ladies of the Chorus" with Adele Jergens (dubbed by Virginia Rees) and others.
Joseph L. Mankiewicz saw her in a small part inThe Asphalt Jungle (1950) and put her in All About Eve (1950), resulting in 20th Century re-signing her to a sevenyear contract. Niagara (1953) and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes(1953) launched her as a sex symbol superstar. When she went to a
supper honoring her in the The Seven Year Itch (1955), she arrived in a red chiffon gown borrowed from the studio (she had never owned a gown). That same year, she married and divorced baseball great Joe DiMaggio (their wedding night was spent in Paso Robles, California). After The Seven Year Itch (1955), she wanted serious acting to replace
79
the sexpot image and went to New York's Actors Studio. She worked with director Lee Strasberg and also underwent psychoanalysis to learn more about herself. Critics praised her transformation in Bus Stop (1956) and the press was stunned by her marriage to playwright Arthur Miller. True to form, she had no veil to match her beige wedding dress so she dyed one in coffee; he wore one of the two suits he owned. They went to England that fall where she made The Prince and the

Showgirl(1957) with Laurence Olivier, fighting with him and falling further prey to alcohol and pills. Two miscarriages and gynecological surgery followed. So did an affair with Yves Montand. Work on her last picture The Misfits (1961), written for her by departing husband Miller was interrupted by exhaustion. She was dropped from the unfinishedSomething's Got to Give (1962) due to chronic lateness and drug dependency.
On August 4, 1962, Marilyn Monroe's day began with threatening phone calls. Dr. Ralph Greenson, Marilyn's physician, came over the following day and quoted later in a document "felt it was possible that Marilyn Monroe had felt rejected by some of the people she had been close to". Apart from being upset that her publicist slept too long, she seemed fine. Pat
Newcombe, who had stayed the previous night at Marilyn's house, left in the early evening as did Greenson who had a dinner date. Marilyn was upset he couldn't stay, and around 7:30pm she telephoned him while he was to tell him that her second husband's son had called him. Peter Lawford also called Marilyn, inviting her to dinner, but she declined. Lawford
81
later said her speech was slurred. As the dark and depressing evening for Marilyn wore on there were other phone calls, including one from Jose Belanos, who said he thought she sounded fine. According to the funeral directors, Marilyn died sometime between 9:30pm and 11:30pm. Her maid unable to raise her but seeing a light under her locked door, called the

police shortly after midnight. She also phoned Ralph Greenson who, on arrival, could not break down the bedroom door. He eventually broke in through French windows and found Marilyn dead in bed. The corner stated she had died from acute barbiturate poisoning, and it was a 'probable suicide'

Probably the most celebrated of all actresses, Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles General Hospital. Prior to her birth, Marilyn's father bought a motorcycle and headed north to San Francisco, abandoning the family in Los Angeles. Marilyn grew up not knowing for sure who her father really was. Her mother, Gladys, had entered into several relationships, further confusing her daughter as to who it was who fathered her. Afterward, Gladys gave Norma Jeane (Marilyn) the name of Baker, a boyfriend she had before Mortenson. Poverty was a constant companion JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
to Gladys and Norma. Gladys, who was extremely attractive and worked for RKO Studios as a filmcutter, suffered from mental illness and was in and out of mental institutions for the rest of her life, and because of that Norma Jeane spent time in foster homes. When she was nine, she was placed in an orphanage where she was to stay for the next two years. Upon being released from the orphanage, she went to yet another foster home. In 1942, at age 16, Norma Jeane married 21-year-old aircraft plant worker James Dougherty. The marriage only lasted four

years, and they divorced .

By this time, Marilyn began to model swimsuits and bleached her hair blonde. Various shots made their way into the public eye, ye, where some were eventually seen by RKO Pictures head Howard Hughes Hughes. He offered Marilyn a screen test, but an agent suggested that 20th
Century-Fox Fox would be the better choice for her, since it was a much bigger and more prestigious studio. She was signed to a contract at $125 per week for a six-month month period and that was increased by $25 per week at the end of that time when her contract was lengthened.
Her first film was in 1947 with a bit part in The Shocking Miss Pilgrim (1947). 1947). Her next production was not much better, a bit in the eminently forgettable Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay! (1948). Two of the three brief scenes she appeared wound up on the cutting room floor.
Later that same year, she was given a somewhat better role as Evie inDangerous Years (1947). However, Fox declined to renew her contract, so she went back to modeling and acting school. Columbia Pictures then picked her up to play

Peggy Martin in Ladies of the Chorus(1948), where she sang two numbers. Notices from the critics were favorable for her, if not the film, but Columbia dropped her. Once again Marilyn returned to modeling. In 1949, she appeared in United Artists' Love Happy (1949). It was also that same year she posed nude for the now famous calendar shot which was later to appear in Playboy magazine in 1953 and further boost her career. She would be the first

centerfold in that magazine's long and illustrious history. The next year proved to be a good year for Marilyn. She appeared in five films, but the good news was that she received very good notices for her roles in two of them, The Asphalt Jungle (1950) from MGM and All About Eve (1950) from Fox. Even though both roles were basically not much more than bit parts, movie fans remembered her ditzy but very sexy blonde performance.

In 1951, Marilyn got a fairly sizable role in Love Nest (1951). The public was now getting to know her and liked what it saw. She had an intoxicating quality of volcanic sexuality wrapped in an aura of almost childlike innocence. In 1952, Marilyn appeared in Don't Bother to Knock (1952), in which she played a somewhat mentally JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
unbalanced babysitter. Critics didn't particularly care for her work in this picture, but she made a much more favorable impression later in the year in Monkey Business (1952), where she was seen for the first time as a platinum blonde, a look that became her trademark. The next year, she appeared in Gentlemen Prefer

Blondes (1953) as Lorelei Lee. It was also the same year she began dating the
baseball great Joe DiMaggio.
Marilyn was now a genuine box-office drawing card. Later, she appeared with Betty Grable, Lauren Bacall and Rory Calhoun in How to Marry a Millionaire (1953). Although her co-stars got the rave reviews, it was the sight of Marilyn that really excited the
audience, especially the male members. On Thursday, January 14th, 1954, Marilyn wed DiMaggio, then proceeded to film There's No Business Like Show Business (1954). That was quickly followed by The Seven Year Itch (1955), which showcased her considerable comedic

talent and contained what is arguably one of the most memorable moments in cinema history: Marilyn standing above a subway grating and the wind from a passing subway blowing her white dress up. By October 1954, Marilyn announced her divorce from DiMaggio. The union lasted only eight months. In 1955, she was suspended by Fox for not reporting for work on How to Be Very, Very Popular (1955). It was her second suspension, the first being for not reporting for the production of The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing (1955). Both roles went to others. her illnesses (whether real or imagined) and generally being unwilling to cooperate with her producers, directors, and fellow actors. However in Bus Stop (1956), Marilyn finally showed critics that she could play a straight dramatic role. It was also the same year she married playwright, Arthur Miller(they divorced in 1960). In 1957, Marilyn flew to Britain to film The Prince and the Showgirl (1957) which proved less than impressive critically and financially. It made money, but many critics panned it for being slowmoving. After a year off in 1958, Marilyn returned to the screen the next year for the delightful

comedy, Some Like It Hot (1959) with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. The film was an absolute smash hit, with Curtis and Lemmon pretending to be females in an all-girl band, so they can get work. This was to be Marilyn's only film for the year. In 1960, Marilyn appeared in George Cukor's Let's Make Love (1960), with Tony Randalland Yves Montand. Again, while it made money, it was critically panned as stodgy and slow-moving. The following year, Marilyn made what was to be her final film. The Misfits (1961), which also proved to be the final film for the legendary Clark Gable, who died later that year of a heart attack. The JOY FEELINGS MAGAZINE
film was popular with critics and the public alike. In 1962, Marilyn was chosen to star in Fox's Something's Got to Give (1962). Again, her absenteeism caused delay after delay in production, resulting in her being fired from the production in June of that year. It looked as though her career was finished. Studios just didn't want to take a chance on her because it would cost them thousands of dollars in delays. She was only 36 years old. Marilyn made only 30 films in her lifetime, but her legendary status and mysticism will remain with film history forever.
