INTRODUCTION TO GRASSHOPPER | 57TH ANNUAL NASA CONVENTION

COMPUTING A CRITICAL REGIONAL HIGH DENSITY HOUSING

INTRODUCTION The recent development of sophisticated computational design tools (like Grasshopper) has instigated new ways of integrating computation in the design process- both within architecture and engineering disciplines. The new set of design tools has infiltrated a bottom up system to open the design space towards a high level of generative and iterative complexity. The integration of these tools allows the architect to generate and control information driven design sets. The workshop has been structured to teach participants the use of Grasshopper as a generative tool, and how to integrate it with a design exercise. Key concepts of ‘Shape Grammar’ and ‘Optimisation’ will be introduced and used to solve the exercise. Throughout the use of visual scripting with Grasshopper, participants will learn how to build and manage parametric data, and how to use it to develop data driven geometry.

And let’s be honest, it is cool!

Moshe Safdie’s Habitat 67 was a close second- but Beijing’s similar weather to India tipped it in Steven Holl’s favour!

No working knowledge of Rhino or Grasshopper is required. A basic understanding of the concepts of 3D modelling will be helpful. C

However, if you are ingenious at traditional coding, you are more than welcome to take over- we could enjoy Chennai in the meanwhile!

REQUIREMENT

Boolean Subtraction Full

Participants should bring their own laptop with pre installed Rhino 5 and Grasshopper. A fully functional evaluation version of the software can be downloaded from www.rhino3d.com.
