inter’s chill is upon us, the days are short and the nights are long and cold. Humans and animals are alike in seeking the warmth of the home fire and some nourishing food. We wish we could be comfortable in our cozy homes, but sometimes it is difficult, knowing there are people and animals outside suffering from the elements. Our cover story this month is called Building from the Ground Up, the story of how the Rockingham County Animal Shelter came into existence. A moving story of a community mobilizing and coming together to tackle a problem, creating something to be proud of, and making a difference in many lives. In addition to providing shelter to the unwanted, abandoned animals, the shelter, with the cooperation of Planned Pethood Spay & Neuter Clinic of Greensboro, offers low cost and free spay/neuter options to those who qualify. Providing living quarters and promoting adoptions is just one part of this terrible situation. The key is spay/neuter and this county is aggressively attacking the root of the problem.
In addition, we have an article from Project Pearl in Winston-Salem about their Spay It Forward Deb Printup Jennifer Frazier program. Please take a minute to read this timely story of another community stepping up and being proactive. Like Rockingham County, Project Pearl and Forsyth County are trying to prevent animals from entering the system through population control. Education is the key. With an informed public and access to low cost or free spay/neuter, the problem of euthanizing healthy animals can be eliminated. But, we all must join together as a community to make a difference and initiate change. Write a government official, make a phone call, volunteer at a shelter or a rescue group. Attend meetings, there are many groups in your area that are working to change the laws and change attitudes. Let’s make winter, and every season, a good one for all creatures.

Rockingham County Animal Shelter Building From the Ground Up

T
h e Rockingham County Animal Shelter opened on May 21, 2010, and is led by Director Kevin Baughn, who was previously the town administrator for Stoneville. This was the first official animal shelter for Rockingham County. Previously the county had contracted the animal shelter through Reidsville Veterinary Hospital. The community came together through personal donations and business sponsorships to make the shelter a reality for the animals of Rockingham County. The
shelter’s first challenge was the unexpected amount of animals it would intake. Quickly the Director, Kevin Baughn and Shelter Manager, Brittany Hughes realized that more help would be needed to care for the growing number of animals. More staff members had to be added in order to take care of the nearly 6,000 animals that came through the shelter doors. In the first year we wanted to reach out to the community and provide a low-cost option for spaying & neutering, which would greatly impact the number of unwanted litters seen each year. This in turn would affect the shelter with the number of animals arriving yearly. We partnered with Planned Pethood Spay & Neuter Clinic out of Greensboro, North Carolina in January of 2011 to offer assistance with spaying and neutering the county’s animals. The cost to the citizens is $75 for dogs and $65 for cats. Many joined in the program of getting their animals altered, but many still said that even though it was low-cost, it was still too expensive for them to afford even though they wanted to participate in the program. Our County Manager, Lance Metzler and commissioners understood the peoples’ concerns and supported the shelter in a way to offer free spay and neuter. The shelter’s Ginger Ann: Female, around 10 months old, Blue Tick/ program is funded by generous Hound Mix (Here Since 11/13/2012) donations and through funds 8

provided by the state of North Carolina. This was to help people who were on government assistance and people that financially qualified for the state program. When the word spread about this opportunity the outpour from the citizens was in full force. In October of 2012 the program was launched and our first free spay and neuter clinic was booked with surgeries within the first week. Planned Pethood saw the need for additional surgery dates and offered a second spay and neuter day which also quickly filled. As of right now the shelter is pleased to announce that we are booked through February of 2013. Since the launch of the Free Spay and Neuter program, the shelter, along with Planned Pethood’s assistance has provided close to 200 free surgeries. If you live in Rockingham County and would like more information on the Free Spay & Neuter program or even the Low-Cost Spay & Neuter program, please contact the animal shelter at 336-394-0075 for more details. Along with providing spay and neuter opportunities to the public, the shelter holds a low-cost rabies clinic twice a year for the dogs and cats of the community to get their vaccination. On October 27, 2012, the shelter, with the help of Dr. Steven Swanner and the trained technicians, provided 205 rabies shots to our community, that were generously donated by the Humane Society of the United States through the Director of North Carolina, Kim Alboum. With so many animals coming into the shelter, the administration and staff work

very hard on making the animals available for adoption. As part of the adoption fee all animals are altered, microchipped and current on vaccinations before leaving the shelter. A lot of work goes into each animal before placing them up for adoption from the time they enter the shelter. All animals are vaccinated upon intake before moving them into the general population of the shelter. After their holding period is over they are evaluated to see if they get along with other animals, tested for heartworms or FELV/FIV and given their rabies vaccine. After getting all their necessary medical information updated it is time for their photo shoot with a staff member who tries to get the best picture possible to showcase the animal’s personality or appeal to the public. Our adoption numbers have grown each year with more people starting to know and become familiar with the shelter and its location. For 2013 the shelter is looking to more progressive ways to improve their adoption rates through grants and we look forward to what the future holds for the animals of

336-394-0075 for more details. the county. When the shelter first started the Shelter Manager and staff would go off site to promote the shelter with adoption fairs in the community and surrounding areas. With the new shelter, the adoptions increased and more people were looking at adoption first before going to buy their new family member from other sources. Another focus of the shelter is increasing the number of animals returning to their original homes. If you have a missing pet please stop by your local animal shelter to check to see if they have been dropped off and we urge you to check more than once. Making a lost flyer with a picture of your pet and telephone number is a great asset in reuniting you with your lost animal. This is not only helpful to staff members when taking in strays brought in by Animal Control but also valuable to the public who might have seen your pet before they even get to the shelter. Microchipping your animal is a great tool to have in retrieving your lost family member as well. A microchip provides information about the owner, their address, best

contact information along with identification of the pet such as name, breed and if they have been altered. When your pet is lost and has a microchip as identification their chances of being reunited are much greater once they arrive at a veterinary hospital or animal shelter. The shelter has been in operation for a year and a half and has made great improvements in the time it has been open. The Rockingham County Animal Shelter looks forward to its future, and growth of adoptions, return to owners and other programs like the Free Spay and Neuter assistance programs to help the citizens and animals of Rockingham County. Squiggles. It’s hard to be as regal as I am with a name like Squiggles, but I make it work. I am very laid back and I have no problem letting the kittens play while I supervise. As long as they don’t try to pounce on me, that is! I am a little shy, but don’t let that discourage you. I warm up quickly and turn into a little lap kitty. Hello world- check me out! When I’m not strutting around in my bow tie, I love to play with my friend Charlotte. She shares a cubby with me at Petsmart and boy am I glad! Nikki and I’m a little confused... I’m not sure if I’m a tortie or a tabby! My fur is swirled with creamy oranges and browns, but I have stripes, too. I’m such a pretty girl. Christine E. Hunt, DVM
Dr. Christine E. Hunt received her B.S. in Zoology from N.C. State University, cum laude, followed by her veterinary doctorate from Oklahoma State University. She has practiced small animal medicine, dentistry and surgery in Greensboro for 33 years. In 2003, she opened University Animal Hospital. Her interests lie in geriatric medicine, pain management and advanced dentistry.
Q A
When my cat is chewing his food, he tilts his head to one side to chew. Sometimes he bites down on his dry food, then drops it like it hurts. What could be causing this? Your cat may be experiencing tooth pain from a common disease known as Feline Tooth Resorption. This painful condition occurs when inflammation of the gum stimulates cells called odontoclasts to dissolve different parts of the tooth. Your cat is most likely chewing on one side of his mouth to avoid contact between his diseased tooth and the hard food. There are three types of resorptive lesions that could affect your cat’s tooth. The dental picture and x-ray shown below illustrate the different types of resorptive conditions.
Type 1 lesions typically affect the enamel crown. As the condition progresses, the crown can fracture or break off, leaving an intact root system. Intact roots can abscess and cause chronic oral pain. You may see a space where a tooth crown should be. Type 2 lesions occur when the tooth’s root system is resorbed and replaced by bone. The enamel crowns can fracture off and eventually become covered by gum tissue. The resorbed roots are not typically painful once this process is complete. Type 3 lesions are a combination of both the Type 1 and Type 2 lesions. In the first picture, the first small premolar has a Type 3 resorptive lesion. The first root is resorbing. The second root is intact, the crown is dissolving and the gum is growing over the crown. The second picture shows a classic Type 2 lesion. The crown looks relatively normal but the entire root system is destroyed.
Q A
My cat has red gum tissue growing on one side of his lower teeth. What should I do for this? Whenever gum tissue is anywhere other than at the normal gum line, there is a high probability of serious dental disease. Your kitty needs to have an oral exam to help determine the extensiveness of the disease process. Then under anesthesia, dental x-rays are used to determine whether your kitty has Type 1, 2 or 3 Tooth Resorptive Disease.
Extractions are recommended for any stage of tooth resorption. In advanced stages of Type 2 dental disease, in which the roots have completely been resorbed by surrounding bone, a crown amputation may be recommended. Crown amputation is only performed in this this condition because there is no longer any alveolar space between the tooth root and bone, and the root canal is gone. Only dental radiographs can determine what types of resorptive lesions are occurring below the gum line.
Q A
My cat’s mouth really smells bad and she will only eat canned food. Does she have an infection? Yes! A healthy oral cavity should not have a foul odor. Fetid breath is typically due to an abscessed tooth, which should be extracted as soon as possible. The bacteria from an abscessed tooth are continually absorbed into the bloodstream and can cause other systemic conditions such as hepatitis or kidney infections.
Q A
How can I keep tartar from forming now that my new kitten has her adult teeth? There are several great ways to prevent plaque and tartar from accumulating on your cat’s teeth. Nothing works better than daily brushing with flavored enzymatic veterinary toothpaste. Just like we care for our own teeth, you should be removing the plaque that accumulates on your cat’s teeth after each meal. Since a cat has a very small mouth, you can use a gauze square or soft cloth wrapped around your pinky finger to remove the plaque gently. Start training cats when they are young to accept dental care, then brushing becomes a daily routine. Older cats may not adjust to tooth brushing, so try adding a dental diet to each meal. Dental diets are specially formulated to remove plaque mechanically. When the cat bites down on the kibble, it does not break apart. Instead, its chewy center goes up to the gum line and mechanically removes the plaque. Some dental diets even contain calcium binders which keep the calcium in saliva from hardening plaque into tartar. Dental tartar is the hard yellow deposit that accumulates on teeth when plaque is not removed by brushing.
Q A
If I brush my cat’s teeth every day, will I still need to have them cleaned? Yes. Your cat will still need its teeth cleaned approximately every 12 to 24 months. Again, just like humans, a thorough dental exam, cleaning, polish and tooth sealant is needed on a regular basis to maintain a healthy mouth. It is what we can’t see below the gum line that makes it necessary for regular checkups. During January, University Animal Hospital is offering a 20% discount on dental cleaning. Call 279-1003 to schedule an appointment for your pet.

Cicero
is a handsome silver tabby with white highlights and extraordinary almond shaped eyes. He was found in a local shopping center parking lot when he was a tiny kitten. He’s been in a foster home with other cats and three large dogs ever since and is around 1-1/2 years old now. If you have some space in your home (and heart) for this special boy, contact us for more information. Call AARF at 768-7387 if you are interested in adopting Cicero. n

Oliver.
Hi, I’m Oliver. I’m a very sweet, very handsome fella, not quite one year old. I love other cats and I’m a love bug with my humans once I get to know them and feel comfortable. They say I’m a Siamese mix, and I look like a Siamese with my orange “points” and blue eyes. I’m ready for my forever home. If you have room in your heart and home for this sweet boy, contact AARF at 768-7387 to arrange a visit. n
Dickins.
is a young mom -- she’s probably less than a year old but was a devoted mother to her 5 kittens. She was rescued from the Forsyth County Animal Shelter with her kittens and has been in foster care in a household with cats and dogs. The kittens have been placed in forever homes, but we don’t want to forget about Clarice. She was spayed as soon as the kittens were fully weaned and she’s ready for a new home. She’s a big talker and loves to be held.
My name is Dickins and I am a male Great Pyrenees mix puppy. I will definitely be a big boy when I grow up, so if you are not interested in having a giant fluffy dog in your house as a member of your family, I am not the dog for you. If you can open your heart and life up to a very sweet big boy who will bring much joy to your family…I’m your boy! I am very sweet natured and love to play and snuggle. Due to a home visit being a part of the adoption process, I cannot be adopted outside a one hour radius from Winston Salem.

Help Jagger make these lyrics a reality for him and you might find you get what you really need too...a really cool kitty to call your very own!
If one word were used to describe Bowie, it would be adorable. This sweet boy, born 5/1/12, is the smallest of his litter but was the first to begin fearlessly exploring his new foster home. Bowie loves to play with his brothers, Jagger and Frehley, and has a great time with kitty toys; however, he always finds time to come up to snuggle in a lap or get a quick belly rub before going on to his next adventure. Clairee
Mitt
and her brother Mitt, also available for adoption, were born into a colony of feral cats. The colony caregiver took them in so that these sweet babies could be adopted. Clairee is a gorgeous little Tuxedo girl. She does not have any extra toes like her brother, but she is just as cute as he is. Clairee is an active little girl who loves playing with her toys. She is a wiggle worm, and doesn’t sit still for any length of time. There are just too many things to explore and conquer! When she does settle down, she turns into a purr machine and loves snuggling with her brother. She will surely snuggle with her human companion too.
and his sister Clairee, also available for adoption, were born to a feral Mom. Mitt (Mittens), acquired his name because he is a polydactyl kitten. This irresistible boy has ‘mittenlike’ feet, due to the extra large toes on his front paws. It looks like he has been playing in the snow with his big white mittens on. Mitt is all boy and he loves playing with his sister and chasing anything that moves. He is a very curious kitten and he enjoys exploring. When he’s finished playing, his favorite things to do are snuggle with his sister and purr his heart out.

Pearl is an absolutely
and her 4 siblings were born to a social cat that lived in a colony of feral cats. She is an outgoing kitty, described by her foster mom as “flirty and very curious.” She is one of the most playful kitties ever and she loves to chase and pounce on her sister, Daffodil, also available for adoption. Dory also loves playing with her toy mice and little crinkle balls. Exploring is in Dory’s blood and even though you might find this little girl some place she shouldn’t be, you can’t be mad at her because she is just too cute.
beautiful silver tabby with striking green eyes and silky, soft fur. Sadly, she was returned to FCAP by her adoptive family after three years as a result of their divorce. Pearl might be described as a “bit fussy” when put in a new situation with people she doesn’t know, but once she becomes comfortable, she is a real love-bug! Pearl is somewhat timid with other kitties, and will do best in a home that is moderately quiet, without small children. Perhaps another docile cat or a calm dog might be OK with this gorgeous girl but she would really love to be the center of your attention.

Tinkerbelle,
white cat with a black tail and the most strikingly gorgeous golden eyes. He and his siblings were rescued at 5 weeks of age from a restaurant parking lot. He is a very sweet boy who loves to play and chase after toys. When he is tired, he will jump up in your lap and purr himself to sleep. He has a wonderful PURRsonality and will not hesitate to tell you when he wants something, usually something to eat. Raja would do well in a home where there are not a lot of other cats as he really prefers to get all of the attention.
the beautiful torbie and white kitty with the expressive green eyes, was adopted to a family when she was a kitten. When they had to move to another state, they could not take her with them. Sadly, Tinkerbelle has been waiting for a permanent home ever since that time. Tink, as we call her, is sweet, gentle and affectionate. She loves to play with her circle ball toy for hours at a time. Like her sister, Isabelle she can be a bit shy at first, but when she gets to know you, she will be your fur-ever friend. If you have room in your heart for this amazing girl, she promises to be a perfect companion.

LOVING PET INN ADOPTIONS 336.393.0000 / www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org
Wilma
Bobby
is a super sweet, affectionate love bug who is happy all the time and her tail is always wagging like crazy. She adores people, loves strangers and can’t get enough loving and hugs. She is a laid-back, low-maintenance gal who enjoys outings and is wellbehaved in public. Wilma is a low-rider, muscular and sturdy, with a definite Bassett Hound body, about 46 lbs. Wilma needs to be an only dog.
is the sweetest guy who has a face like a Teddy bear and a charming personality to match. Sociable Bobby just adores people and is a very gentle, loving boy. He likes to play fetch with balls and returns them nicely. He loves being petted and should make a wonderful family dog. He’s about 6 years old and 40 lbs. When his fur grows out he will be so fluffy and pretty! Bobby needs to be an only dog, please.
Wilma’s adoption donation is $100. Call 393-0000 to give her a loving home. n
Bobby’s adoption donation is $125. Call 393-0000 to give him a loving home. n
Miss Pearl
Oliver.
is an absolute sweetheart whose owner just died unexpectedly, leaving her homeless. She has always known love and is just a nice, normal, very friendly gal who is looking for a new family to snuggle with. She gets along fine with other dogs but is used to being an only pup so she would probably prefer that. She is house-trained and walks beautifully on a leash. Miss Pearl is 8 years old.
Handsome Schnauzer mix Oliver came to us from a hoarding situation so he is very timid. Deprived of a normal life as a beloved pet, it will take a little time before Oliver can blossom into the wonderful dog he was meant to be. Even though he’s a scaredy cat, he is always sweet and never snippy. He is going to be a very loving dog when he gains some confidence. A fenced yard & a family devoted to his rehabilitation is required.
Pearl’s adoption donation is $125. Call 393-0000 to give her a loving home. n
Oliver’s adoption donation is $150. Call 393-0000 to give him a loving home. n
Violet. Beautiful Violet
Smokey.
is one amazing girl! She was found as a stray taking excellent care of one healthy puppy. She’s finished taking care of her baby and is now ready for adoption. She is so very loving and affectionate and her long, silky, soft fur makes her wonderfully huggable. Violet is well adjusted and already trained. She knows come, sit, paw (shake), down and speak though joyful excitement can make her forget her manners! She’s great with other dogs. She is 7-8 years old & 39 lbs.
Gentle Smokey is a shy, tender young boxer mix rescued from a hoarder. He is so appreciative of his new life and is now healthy, happy and having so much fun playing with the other dogs here! Smokey is affectionate and loving and needs a patient new family who will continue to socialize him and help him become more confident. He has learned to enjoy leash walks and is well-behaved.
Violet’s adoption donation is $150. Call 393-0000 to give her a loving home. n

As a Pisces, Flossy is kind, sensitive and gentle; she absolutely loves wearing pearls, is addicted to watching The Voice and is a big Carolina Panther’s fan (her friend Photo courtesy of David Reavis. Oscar even knitted her a little cat Jersey to wear). At 2 years old, this DSH would make a delightful lap cat and ideal house companion. Flossy has a reduced adoption fee courtesy of Project Pearl. Socks
Annie came to Red Dog Farm
is all boy! He was originally found abandoned at an apartment complex. Thanks to a wonderful young lady, he found his way to Red Dog Farm. Today, he is currently residing in his foster home and trying to decide if his new digs are suitable or not. His foster mom says that like all boys, he needs a little time to settle down, but with some good old TLC he will make a wonderful kitten and cat for someone.
Animal Rescue Network when her owners could no longer care for her. Annie is one fantastic dog! She does well with other dogs, cats and kids. Her foster mom reports that they haven’t had a single issue with her being left in the house. She still has plenty of play left in her and would do great in a moderately active house. We don’t know that she would be up for a ten mile run but plenty of play time or a nice long walk would certainly be fine with her. Annie has been spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated so she is ready for her forever home.

or “Izzy” came to Red Dog Farm when her owners could no longer care for her. She is a little shy when you first meet her but quickly warms up to you and loves attention. Rooster
Willow gets along well with other dogs, likes cats and LOVES children. Willow is spayed, completely housebroken and is an allaround easy girl. Her foster mom reports that you couldn’t ask for a better dog! Now all this sweet girl needs is to find her forever family. If you are interested in adopting Willow, please visit our website, www.reddogfarm.com. n
Addison and Buddy
is one of the best all-around horses we have ever had in our program. He came to us green and a bit shy but has now had extensive training on the ground and under saddle and is an absolute love bug. He has great potential as an eventer, hunter or trail horse for the right person who is a confident rider and is ready to continue his training. Rooster has been on several trail rides and competed in a “green as grass” horse trial. Rooster is not ready to be a lesson pony or beginner’s horse at this time, but he could get there relatively quickly with continued training.
have both been vaccinated and gelded. They are sharing a pasture and are the best of friends and we’d love to see them be adopted together. Both came from terrible situations and they are happy now! Addison is still shy, but Buddy (who is very tame) is teaching him that people are OK. Both will come up for scratches and treats but Addison stays right behind Buddy.

Dr. Karen Kennedy | Dr. Angelique Fuller | Dr. Vicki McCall | Dr. Melissa Magnotta The concept of grieving for a pet companion has been misguided and confusing in society. Unless you have a love for our world of animals and pets, this understanding that grief is necessary in the process of the death experience, can be unrecognized as being valid and acceptable. Laurie Califf and MJ Tucci are certified animal grief counselors who have been trained in the field of bereavement and are passionate about getting this message out to the public: The grief over a companion pet is to be validated, respected and accepted as part of life and love. What may surprise you is how you or others may respond when that loved one is a companion pet. The grief over a companion pet is to be validated, respected and accepted as part of This is a loss you will life and love. feel daily, and sometimes struggle with how to process such a loss. Navigating through feelings of blame, guilt, confusion, deep sadness, anger and isolation are but a few feelings that are experienced. Seeking others who will understand and listen is valuable to the healing process. Many who experience such a loss, especially if euthanasia is a choice needed, may be left with an unsettled feeling of “making the right decision.” Euthanasia is a decision made through the choice of love and to make such a choice is to honor and respect. Companion pets need someone to help them with their suffering. Companion pets love unconditionally and leave an empty space in our hearts when they die. If you are experiencing a loss and need assistance it is important that you honor your own feelings and seek the help of a professional, a friend, or someone you trust to sit with you in your pain and help you to move to a place of healing. We have designed a supportive guide to help navigate through the death of a pet. This book will enable one to record the smallest of memories that can allow your pet to live on in your heart forever. is one of our newest Basset Hounds at CBHR. He’s about 10 years old, very quiet, and sweet. We believe Quincy spent almost his entire life outdoors, but his foster mom is helping him get used to living indoors. He has discovered that a person’s lap is a wonderful place to be, and tries to spend as much time there as he can. He doesn’t chew or destroy things, and his tail is constantly wagging. Quincy gets along famously with other dogs, but we aren’t sure Carolina Basset Hound Rescue about his opinion of cats. Training Your Pet
Your Dog's New Year's Resolutions by Adam Witherspoon, Training Director, Shiloh K-9 Dog Training Services, LLC
I
f your dog could have New Year’s Resolutions, what would they be? Better behavior? Stop biting? Never pee in your house again? These sound like good ones right? For you, YES, but for your dog, probably not.
wanted behaviors and correct unwanted ones, stay consistent, don’t just let the dog do it one time and then not the next. Know what you want from your dog first before you expect them to act a certain way.
Your dog’s top New Year’s Resolutions would be simple:
Get help: There are many capable and reputable trainers in our area. Do research and find one that will match you and your dog well, and ask for references. Another great resource for finding a trainer in your area, is www.k9guide.com. Look up the endorsed pros there as they are all very good.
1. To better understand and comprehend their owners. Dogs live in a perpetual state of confusion, never able to understand the English language, so gaining a better understanding of our communication would be a big one for them. How can you help your dog achieve this? Talk less and lead more: The more conversations you have with your dog, the less they will hear you. Eventually when you need something from them, the less and less they will understand, or wish to comply. The use of words is to give clear and concise commands, not requests or sentences. Try using a leash, lead your dog to what you want and need. Especially use a leash on your dog during a problem behavior, this is one of the simplest, easiest, and yet most overlooked solutions available. If your dog is jumping on people when they come in your house, or going crazy at the doorbell, the leash is there to be used to correct them, and not your words. This will stop it, right? It will if you are quiet, calm and consistent. Remember if your dog is allowed to jump on you, then the assumption is that jumping is OK. 2. To please their owners more: The ever popular decision to re-home a dog due to unwanted behaviors is very common. This of course leaves a broken heart for you and your dog. When an owner is pleased with the dog and their behaviors, then both win. How can you help your dog achieve this? Make a Commitment to your dog: When you have committed to something, in this case your dog, then you concentrate on changing the behaviors and accepting your dog. Your dog will appreciate this more than you know. It will also help you to stay determined and focused. Make a list of unwanted behaviors: Decide to no longer “tolerate” those behaviors your dog exhibits. Remember your dog does not know right from wrong. Praise your dog for those 36

Remember we all tend to make New Years resolutions. Fitness gyms love New Years Day as it is their biggest spike in memberships, yet few people continue to use them. I would suggest resolutions this. Make one, only for 2013 one resolution for yourself, and one for your dog. Maybe the two can help each other. If it is to lose weight, and your dog needs it too, then implement it for both of you. This would be taking a walk. Take weekly pictures of the both of you, and keep track of your progress. It will keep you motivated. Enjoy the time you spend accomplishing these goals, and you will enjoy your dog more as well! Happy New Year everyone! Adam has been working with people and their problems with dogs for over 17 years. He is a member of the International Association of Canine Professionals, and has been featured on Fox 8, WXII 12, CBS news, as well as published by many other local news outlets. He has been a training consultant for Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue, helping dogs that many people said couldn’t be helped, and has volunteered with many organizations across the Piedmont Triad. SPECIFIC BREED & VARIOUS LOCAL RESCUE GROUPS Contact information is listed with each featured animal. Bruno is a 2 year old pug or pug mix, ready for his forever family. He is up-to-date on shots, heartworm negative, neutered and microchipped. He is getting more loving each day. Bruno was not well socialized and was treated unkindly by some children who pulled on his tail all the time. He would do best in a home without small children where someone is willing to work with him. He’s Pug Rescue of NC fine with other friendly dogs, but still needs supervision with his house training. Bruno is making good progress in foster care. He needs a home with a fenced in yard. Adoption fee is waived, just hoping someone will make a small tax deductible donation to help Pug Rescue continue to save other needy pugs like Bruno.
Ellie, NCSR # 385, is an adorable 6 lb. “toy” Schnauzer, 5-6 years old. She is spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on shots. Ellie is very agile and can climb and jump several feet. Ellie was found wandering the streets of Wilmington scared, hungry and suffering from a severe eye infection. The eye problem will be ongoing as it appears she has KCS which is basically a lack of tears. She will need prescription RX eye drops once a day for the rest of NC Schnauzer her life as well as over-the-counter tear supplements 2-3 times a day. She’s a loving lap dog and a couch Rescue potato during the day. She does well with other dogs and people. Ellie is on a limited diet of Royal Canin gastro-intestinal or home cooked rice and chicken. She’s a great travel dog who loves to go shopping.
Put in an application at www.pugrescenc.org. It will be forwarded to the foster parent for consideration We’re not a first come first serve. n
Ellie’s adoption fee is $250.00. Contact rescue@ncschnauzers.org if you are interested in adopting Ellie. n

Miracles at Work Rescue
Beagle and has been neglected most of her life. She is short legged and only weighs about 18 lbs! She is learning what it is like to be loved and held! Minnie is up-to-date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, spayed and microchipped. Since Animal Rescue of Stokes County she came to us with a bad case of whipworms, we are working on getting her coat back in good shape and also on house-training. She also came to us with BB pellets embedded near her shoulder! If you think Minnie would make a good addition to your home, please email us at: arsc2004@gmail.com. n
Willow. Hi my name is
Jasper is an adorable
Willow! I am a very sweet girl who has so much love to give, and not to brag, but I am also very smart. I am house trained, fully vetted, love everyone and am very patiently waiting for a new family to love. If you are looking for a sweet girl who will love you unconditionally, then look no further! You found me!
bobtail tabby who was born on June 7, 2012. His mother is a Japanese Bobtail and there is also evidence of American Bobtail in his ancestry. Good with other friendly Tailless Cat Rescue cats, he also seems to like dogs. He rubs against his foster mom’s dog and even plays with the dog’s tail. Jasper enjoys playing with the other kittens in the house and is getting cuddlier with people as he matures. He is neutered, FIV/ FeLV and heartworm negative, fully vetted and microchipped.
Sincerely, Willow

Devin. Hi! My name is Devin. I am a 10 lb. Toy Poodle between 10-12 years old and was dumped off at a high kill shelter when my “owners” decided they wanted a “newer model”. I am quite spunky for my age and I love to be held and Out of Harm’s Way petted. I love other dogs and I even like cats. I am completely housebroken and crate trained (but I hate the crate). I can be trusted outside of a crate, and I won’t mess up a thing! I am neutered, up-to-date on my shots, heartworm negative and microchipped. They even pulled blood work and said I was in tip-top shape! I would love a new home for the new year.... maybe you can find it in your home and in your heart to adopt little ol’ me? Spay it Forward With Project Pearl
13,640 puppies, dogs, cats and kittens were surrendered by their owners from January 1, 2009 to December 9, 2012. That’s a staggering 42% of the intake population at Forsyth County Animal Shelter. Just imagine the dramatic difference if just 10% of those animals had been spayed or neutered. It is estimated that over 32,000 animals will enter Forsyth County Animal Shelter in the next 4 years. Of that, 20% will be kittens and puppies. Project Pearl is a nonprofit organization that works in partnership with Forsyth County Animal Control. Their goals are to help educate our community about proper pet ownership, including - licensing, rabies vaccinations and spay/neuter through outreach, social media and other sources. We believe that community-wide education, results in better population Photo credit: DesiLu Photography control, lower stray intakes and reduced owner surrenders. Since our partnership began in October 2011, adoption rates have increased 32% and return rates have reached an all time low in the county’s history. Project Pearl’s newest campaign, Spay it Forward, was designed to assist low income Forsyth County residents in getting their pets altered. Although Project Pearl is also contributing to Forsyth County’s 2013 Spay Day on February 23, in which qualified Forsyth County residents can apply for low cost or free funding, Spay it Forward, will be collectively focusing on animals that Forsyth County Animal Control Officers see in the field on routine calls.

by Melissa Ball
In an average year, Forsyth County Animal Shelter’s animal control officers will respond to and investigate over 14,000 calls. An individual officer will visit around 1,000 households per year. The vast majority of these animals are not altered. The goal of Spay it Forward is to reduce the number of animals per household that require sheltering by Forsyth County each year.
How Spay it Forward Works: It’s simple. For every $50 donation Project Pearl receives, we can help alter an animal in our community. Although we specify a $50 monetary donation will go towards altering a pet, any donation is accepted and appreciated. Once the donation is received, Project Pearl sends a letter to the person it is honoring, asking them to “Spay it Forward” for someone else. Once the funds are collected, a needy animal in our community will be altered. Ultimately, our hope is that this ripple effect will allow us to help spay and neuter hundreds of animals in our community, thus preemptively reducing our ever growing pet overpopulation problem. For more information on Project Pearl’s Spay it Forward campaign, please email us at projectpearl@triad.rr.com or visit our web page at www.projectpearlnc.org or visit us on Facebook at Project Pearl. All animals listed through our social media outlets are available for adoption at Forsyth County Animal Control.

standard dachshund. Her owners moved out of their house, leaving Addy behind, waiting in vain for her people to return. Addy then found herself at a local animal Adopt Me shelter – a very scary place for a sweet senior girl! She is cratetrained and mostly housetrained – she does go outside when asked. Addy is very sweet, but since little kids are not her favorite, she will do best in a home with children over the age of 10. She gets along well with her foster dog siblings and is spayed and current on all vetting. Addy is available for adoption through Almost Home Dachshund Rescue.
