hat is the root cause of overpopulation, animal abuse and high rates of euthanasia across the country? Failure of pet owners to spay/neuter their pets! Unbelievably, some people think they are “ruining their animal’s life” by preventing them to rampantly breed and produce litter after litter of puppies, kittens and other species, many destined to short miserable lives. Some people bemoan the high costs involved in being responsible pet owners, but what are the true costs in picking up, housing/ feeding unwanted pets and ultimately taking an innocent life–how do you measure that cost? Besides, if anyone is truly needy, they can contact local agencies that offer low cost spay/ neuter options that can help with costs. Most veterinarians will work with you on coming up with a payment plan to spread the cost over a period of time. Take the time and do the right thing. Allison Loiselle of SPCA of the Triad has written a great article on the importance of spaying and neutering your pet, which you can find on pages 8 and 9 of this issue. Because this is such an important issue, we would like to summarize the top

reasons for spaying and neutering. Overpopulation of companion animals tops the list. There are millions of unwanted dogs and cats in the United States which leads to overcrowded shelters and an extremely high rate of euthanasia in our country. In addition, sterilization of your cat or dog will increase his/her chance of a longer and healthier life by decreasing the occurrences of some cancers and by reducing some negative behavioral issues. We urge everyone to take the time to read this article because together we can make a difference. Our Ask the Vet column this month features Ronald J. Komich, DVM, of Greensboro Veterinary Hospital. The article discusses seizures in dogs and includes various reasons for seizures and what can be done to help. We hope you enjoy this issue of Triad Happy Tails. lease spay or neuter your pet – that’s the mantra of professionals in the animal welfare field. We say it so many times to so many people that we probably even say it in

our sleep! Why do we put such a strong emphasis on this? Do we want to stop the breeding of cats and dogs altogether? Of course we don’t. What we hope to achieve through widespread spaying and neutering is an end to thousands of unplanned and unwanted puppies and kittens in our shelters and rescue groups. In one afternoon the SPCA of the Triad received calls from Guilford County residents asking for help with three separate litters, altogether a total of 28 puppies! In one afternoon! Three litters that could have been prevented if the parent dogs had been spayed or neutered. Twenty thousand animals annually - that is a conservative estimate of the number of dogs and cats brought to our community’s shelters and rescue groups every year. That is the tragedy we strive to avoid by advocating for spay/ neuter and educating all people, everywhere, at Scarlett, a 1-1/2 year old catahoula female available for adoption. every opportunity.

Pepper, a 5 month old DLH available for adoption. Change cannot occur until everyone is aware of the facts, as distressing as they may sound. The simple truth of the matter is that one unspayed cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 kittens in seven years! One unspayed dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in six years! This is why spaying or neutering even one pet – your own pet – can literally save the lives of thousands of other dogs and cats. Pet guardians or concerned individuals should also keep in mind the numerous medical and behavioral advantages that come along with spay/neuter when making the decision to have their pet spayed or neutered. Over 50% of unspayed or unneutered dogs and cats will end up with cancer of the reproductive organs, but by spaying or neutering your pet at an early age, the risks of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, testicular and prostate cancers are nearly eliminated! It’s a wonderful feeling to know that you are taking the necessary responsible steps to help prevent your pet from getting many forms of cancer. Additionally, spaying and neutering makes your pet’s life safer by reducing their hormone driven tendencies to run away from home, reducing the chances of becoming lost, hit by a car, or getting into fights with other animals. Especially in male dogs, neutering has the added

Cover Story benefits of reducing aggressive hormone driven behaviors and the instinct to mark their territory. For nearly two decades the SPCA of the Triad has been actively assisting the community with affordable spay & neuter services. During the past 17 years, the SPCA opened and operated the first stationary spay/neuter facility in Guilford County and with the recent acquisition of a 32 foot long Gulfstream RV, will soon be providing mobile spay/neuter services to residents in the community. Our staff assists callers seven days a week with spay/neuter resources. They are present in the community throughout the year at fairs and public events, and are bringing the spay/neuter message to children in our schools. Currently the SPCA of the Triad operates a limited admission shelter, and is licensed to house approximately 60 animals and operate with a 5 person staff and dedicated volunteers that run two shifts, seven days a week. The SPCA of the Triad is also very fortunate to welcome our new veterinarian, Dr. Sara Fletcher, DVM who will be performing spay/neuter surgery onboard our mobile clinic. Dr. Fletcher has been a strong supporter of the SPCA for many years and a dedicated advocate of rescue animals. This is a very exciting time, as we are just beginning the retrofit of our mobile unit! The addition of mobile spay/neuter services to our community will significantly increase the number of animals and people we are able to reach. Campaigns to assist residents on fixed incomes, or suffering through a period of unemployment, with spay/neuter will have a tremendous effect on reducing the number of litters born throughout the upcoming warmer weather months.

The SPCA of the Triad is dedicated to alleviating animal suffering through all of our efforts, and providing spay/neuter solutions is simply the best preventative measure we can offer. The overpopulation crisis facing Guilford County did not happen overnight, and it wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be fixed overnight, but it can get better. It will get better when we can come together as a community, make the conscious decision to take responsibility for our pets, and set a good example for our youth. In the world of animal welfare, in the struggle to end pet overpopulation, it truly does take a community. Kent. Gray tabby and white Kent is just a kitten inside and out. He is sweet and loving but yet still loves to play. Watch out though, he is a leg rubber. Born sometime around 5/15/10, Kent came to us when he was found by a college student who didn’t know what to do with him. He eventually met up with a kind hearted woman who found the Animal Rescue & Foster Program. She had named Kent after her ex-husband. He must have been a sweet man because this Kent sure is! We fixed him right up and he is good to go and looking for a really nice home to adopt him. Kent says he does not require a lot, just belly rubs and back rubs. What Constitutes a Seizure in Dogs? Seizures in a dog can be a very frightening event for both the owner and their pet. A seizure is a neurological disorder that may be caused by multiple abnormalities, which must be sorted out. Diagnosing the cause of a seizure requires a thorough history, a physical examination and lab testing (blood & urine).

What Causes Seizures in Dogs? Frequent Causes of Seizures Include: – Head trauma - recent, usually within the previous few days. – Toxins – something ingested or applied, most often insecticide products, chemicals (petroleum distillates, fertilizers, antifreeze), certain mushrooms, etc. – Neoplasia – brain tumors (may require MRI or CT scan to detect). – Metabolic – liver (not detoxifying effectively), kidneys (not removing waste products effectively), low blood glucose (diabetes), electrolyte imbalance, hemoconcentration (blood is too thick), or other internal abnormalities. – Idiopathic Epilepsy – no apparent cause. Epilepsy is a diagnosis that is backed into by eliminating other causes for the seizures. Seizures are Generally Measured by Three Variables: – Intensity. Seizures can vary widely in intensity. A mild seizure (petit mal) may show facial twitching or dog may act “spaced out”. Sometimes they appear to be snapping at flies that don’t exist or exhibit some other bizarre behavior. Then just as

quickly as it occurred, it is over and they are back to normal. On the other end of the spectrum, with more extreme seizure activity (grand mal) they are on their sides, often paddling their legs, salivating, with involuntary urination and/or defecation and loss of consciousness. – Duration. A seizure may last a few seconds to several minutes or longer. Grand mal seizures seem to last forever, but usually are one to three minutes in duration. It is helpful if you can actually time the seizure. After a seizure (the postictal phase) the pet is usually subdued and acts tired for several minutes to hours. A grand mal seizure is a strenuous event. – Period between seizures. A seizure may be a one-time event, or they can come in a cluster, one seizure followed almost immediately by another. This cycle can go on for hours. Most often they start out once or twice a year and progressively become more frequent. Keeping a log of observed seizures is helpful, realizing that there may be some not observed.

What Can be Done for Seizures?

Treatment Depends on the Underlying Cause Listed Above Epilepsy requires prescription medication that is usually life long and requires periodic monitoring and adjustments. The most common epileptic drugs prescribed are phenobarbital and potassium bromide, given individually or in combination. Both drugs are metabolized by the liver, and excreted through the kidneys, which must be monitored closely for toxicity. Often, owners of epileptic dogs eventually identify activities that will precipitate a seizure, such as excessive excitement, packing suitcases, visitors, or certain foods. Obviously these activities should be avoided. If your dog is seizing, try to get him/her on the floor where he cannot fall or hurt himself. Do NOT put your hand in his mouth; he will not swallow his tongue. Do not administer oral medication during a seizure. Stay calm; seizures generally have no lasting, discernible effects. Once regulated, epileptic dogs usually lead a relatively normal, happy life.

aisy, our cocker spaniel, was only 9 months old when we decided to adopt Mitzi, a 7-year old white toy poodle. These two bonded quickly and were the best of friends for seven years. Due to health issues, Mitzi’s last few years were very difficult. First, she lost her hearing and eventually lost her sight. We made that dreaded decision in July of 2010 which left Daisy without her best friend she had grown up with. At the time, we thought we would adjust to a single-dog home. Fast forward a couple of months. . . we were in the waiting room at Village Vet in Oak Ridge and Daisy was being her usual shy self. Afraid of all the other dogs, she was cowering behind me. Then the front door opened and expecting an obnoxious intruder to invade her quiet corner, Daisy started to retreat further behind me. Suddenly, Daisy’s reverse gear shifted into full throttle forward! Walking through the doorway, ever so slowly, was a white senior toy poodle who looked strikingly like Mitzi. Her owner jokingly called her “Man-eater”. I realized Daisy thought her best friend had returned! After asking permission, I eased my restraint on Daisy’s leash and allowed her to introduce herself. Daisy’s tail was wagging 90 miles per hour, ears were perked, and she could not take her eyes off of Mitzi’s look-alike. Even when we went into the examination room, Daisy stretched the full length of her leash to be as close as possible to the door. She stood there gazing excitedly at “Man-eater”. As we left Dr. Taylor’s office that day, still choking back tears, I knew I had to find Daisy a new best friend. A few days later, while eating at Bill’s Pizza Pub in Oak Ridge, we picked up a copy of Triad Happy Tails Magazine. Our eyes and hearts were drawn to Lammy, a little white poodle who was up for adoption at Loving Pet Inn Adoptions, a local animal rescue organization in High Point. Lammy was six years old and was one of the “Rush Kennel” dogs before being rescued. We contacted Dara Lamberson at Loving Pet Inn Adoptions to find out more and eventually decided to adopt this little guy. After adopting him, we saw he did not respond well to the name “Lammy”. One day as he was acting silly - like a TV cartoon - I called, “Come here, Mickey Mouse!” And boy did he respond. We experimented several ways with the name Mickey and knew he had made the connection. Hence, Mickey had a new identity. There will never be another Mitzi, but Mickey has certainly found a place in our hearts and helped fill the void. The lesson to be learned: Listen to your pet. Their message is clear. It is not posted on Facebook, but rather on Heartbook.

Rusty is around six years old and was surrendered to a shelter after being chained up for his entire life. He’s been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and got to spend a day at the spa. The groomers told us that he behaved beautifully in spite of the fact that it took them all day to get the mats out. Shaun had no tags on, but wore a collar that read “Bad to the Bone” when picked up as a stray. He was heartworm positive and more “Skin and Bones” than “Bad to the Bone.” Our volunteer took one look into his warm brown eyes and knew she had to save him. Probably around 5 years old, he’s a big boy and a quick learner. Cammie is a sweet girl that lives with her foster family and is 100% house trained. "Let's Take Both" Raising Sibling Puppies

t is time to pick a puppy from the litter and it is hard to decide. They are all so cute! In some cases, you have arrived and there are only two left in the litter. It is tempting to say “Oh let’s take them both. They can keep each other company when we are at work.” Before making that decision, it is a good idea to think of the work involved. Raising two puppies to become well-balanced adults is much harder than it appears. It may not be a wise decision for either puppy. Let’s look at the consequences of raising two puppies together. The consequences apply not only to littermates, but any two young dogs raised simultaneously. They keep each other company: The critical developmental period for young dogs is between the ages of 8-14 weeks. They learn to explore the world and develop skills needed to handle unfamiliar situations. They learn proper social skills including greeting skills and “doggy etiquette” from older, more mature dogs. When puppies are raised together and are not exposed to the world separately, their desire to investigate new situations is stunted. One puppy is always the bolder of the two, and will do most of the investigating. The shyer puppy will hang back. They may have little desire to explore new things. After all, they have each other to play with and in their eyes, that is all they need. Double the puppies...double the love for me: Two puppies that spend all of

their time together will bond closely with each other, and will have a difficult time bonding with the owner. This is not what is important to them. They want each other. When their bond deepens, spending any

time at all without the other present will stress them. Such activities including, going to the vet, taking them on separate walks, or leaving them in separate areas will be taxing. They will have no idea how to act on their own and this will be scary for both. Sibling Rivalry: As the puppies mature, it is not uncommon for aggression issues to appear. It is natural for them to compete over the same resources such as food, toys, space and even your attention. The aggression may become severe and rehoming one of the dogs may be necessary. It can be done!: With time, patience, love and the help of a well-qualified trainer, adding puppies to a house can be an enjoyable experience. Both puppies can live a

well-balanced life. However, it is twice the work. Every aspect of puppy rearing must be done individually, without the other sibling present. They must be crated separately, preferably in separate rooms. They must go on outings individually. It is best if they attend training classes individually. They must both have individual bonding time with the owners, including one-on-one play sessions. Play time where both puppies are present should be supervised and on a limited basis. As they grow older, the time they spend separately can decrease. By the time they are a year old, they will have bonded with the owner. They will have developed their own personality to the fullest and can fully enjoy time spent with the owner, as well as each other.

Hank (NCSR #300) is a pure white Miniature Schnauzer/West Highland Terrier mix. Hank is 10 years old, around 14 lbs, with natural ears and tail. Hank was relinquished to a shelter by his owner because the owner was moving. After spending three weeks at the shelter, Hank was on the euthanasia list and NCSR was contacted and we rescued him! NC Schnauzer Rescue Don’t let Hank’s age fool you … he is a spunky, lively little guy that is sweet and affectionate. Hank has had surgery to remove a bladder stone but came through it with flying colors. He is on a special diet to prevent him from getting another one. Hank is a cat chaser and does well with children. Hank is housebroken, crate trained, and is a little shy of strangers at first but warms up quickly. Tara.

Born around January 2007, Tara is an attractive 7-1/2 lb. short haired, rumpy riser Manx. She’s a true blue and white tuxedo. She arrived with a serious bladder infection which was treated and is now gone. She does still eat a Friskies special diet with suppleTailless Cat Rescue ments, just to make sure that she doesn’t develop a problem again. It also keeps her from having constipation problems, something not unusual with rumpy risers. Tara is good with most cats, but would probably do OK as an only cat also.
