Letter from the Editors

Welcome to Jennifer Frazier

T

his has been a couple of great weeks! A favorite of our’s, Emma, was finally adopted after a long wait. This is what its all about, we were thrilled when we got the news Emma was in a loving home. We hope you enjoy this month’s issue of Triad Happy Tails Magazine, which features more than 70 adoptable animals from 24 different shelters and rescue organizations in our area. Sometimes our publication can present a problem, as in the case of a friend we heard from recently. She had a copy of our latest magazine in her car where her granddaughters found it. They started looking through the magazine and picked out the two dogs they wanted to bring home. When their mom informed them this was not possible, a huge ruckus ensued. Unfortunately, this is a draw back to our publication. We constantly hear our book is “trouble,” people want at least two or three animals out of each issue. When we came up with the idea for our magazine, we both had envisioned this to be the case. A big shout out to all our readers who have adopted new friends through our publication. The holidays are approaching and we’d like to remind every-

one to please think carefully when adopting a pet for the family holiday gift. That cute little kitten, puppy or lizard is a big responsibility. A living creature requires space, veterinary care, nourishment, love and a lot of work. This is not a disposable item. Once the excitement has passed, it is still there needing love and care. If you do decide to get a pet, please check the local shelter or rescue groups. You will find plenty of beautiful animals that desperately need good homes. What a wonderful gift for everyone, especially the homeless animal. Remember to send us your holiday pet photos. We will devote a page in our December issue to all creatures, great and small. This can be any holiday, so send them in so we can share with our readers. We love seeing success stories, funny pet adventures and interesting photos/videos. Post them on our Facebook page and share with everyone at: www.facebook.com/triadhappytails. Last of all, we want to thank all of our advertisers for supporting us. This magazine would not be possible without them. Please check out the list below and patronize them whenever possible.

What Was the Next Step? Animal Rescue and Foster Program by Sharon Gray

I

t was the end of 2001. We were approaching our ten year anniversary. What to do, what to do, to “grow” the Animal Rescue & Foster Program (ARFP)? It was a Tuesday night Board of Director’s meeting and the question on the table was, “What is the next step we should take?” Within one week, we were looking for a spot to take ARFP to the next step. A place to call home is what we were aiming for. We spent months looking at everything, from retail space to a kennel going into bankruptcy. We weren’t quite sure what we wanted, but we knew for sure that we would not bite off more than we could chew. Late spring of 2002, one of our board members found out that Guilford Garden Center had just bought the brick house at 705 Milner Drive. That brick house had raised a family for many years, and then had become Hunter’s Needlepoint Shop. The house would soon be available for rent. We went to see the house. We knew immediately we

had found our home if Chuck Voight, owner of Guilford Garden Center, would rent to an animal rescue group. Chuck had the same concerns that everyone did; how would we handle the odor, how would we handle the noise, and how many animals would we house there? We promised to be the best tenants ever and, with his employees, convinced him that it was a good fit for both of us! In June of 2002, we had the keys to this perfect little house which would soon be the Next Step Adoption Center. Volunteers worked non stop painting, tearing up carpet, sanding hardwood floors, laying linoleum, uncovering counter tops, laying tile, scrubbing and cleaning. Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months. We all learned how to use a dremel and a sander, we learned how to stain hardwood floors, and we learned exactly how helping homeless animals had come to make us a family. By mid September our home was almost

Clockwise, starting with top photo: Tiko, black cat, leaning over Ollie, Siamese mix; Leo coming out of the tunnel in the playroom; Khaki, lounging in a cat tree; the cats’ playroom, a kitty’s wonderland. 8

It was only ready due to the support of this wonderful community that we live in. Many wonderful companies and people donated product, labor, and time to help make this happen. The grand opening and ribbon cutting at the Next Step Adoption Center was in October 2002. Cindy Farmer and Emily Byrd graciously agreed to come for the ribbon cutting. Fox 8 covered the opening. We had wine, desserts, and live music. The event was hosted by many very proud ARFP volunteers. This was our next step in growing the Animal Rescue & Foster Program to be able to help even more homeless animals. Our first resident was an orange and white tabby cat aptly named Milner and he was adopted that night. We knew we had created something wonderful and it indeed has been! 11am-3pm and on Sundays from 1-4pm. We truly enjoy seeing people react to our adoption center when they walk in the front door. They come expecting to see a shelter or a kennel and they find a home, a home where the people all have one thing is common; their love of helping homeless animals. Foster parents are always willing to introduce you to their foster dogs and cats and tell you their likes and dislikes. Our biggest reward is when we can match up a dog or cat with the perfect person or family. This is why you will often hear a volunteer say “tell us what you are looking for.” The adoption center houses 7-10 felines full time, and is a cheery place to visit whether you are a cat lover or a dog lover. Window treatments match the lilac color theme in the front room and the retail area, while the kitchen sports a yellow and black look with stenciling on the walls and cabinets. The “cage-less” playroom is a kitty’s wonderland with cat

trees, toys and scratching toys. Chairs have been reupholstered to match the window treatments which match the wall colors. Not one to leave a room untouched, volunteers equipped the bathroom with a restaurant sink to bathe cats in, while the canine window treatments match the gray and burgundy tile. Stop in for some kitty kisses or high fives from the puppies! See what the Next Step Adoption Center is all about! Training Your Dog

It’s My Home Too!

What we can do to make this most special time of year special for our dogs too.

–By Adam Witherspoon,Training Director

Shiloh K-9 Dog Training Services LLC

A

s we approach this time of the year, we will all be getting sick to our stomachs by eating turkey, dressing, pumpkin pie, and of course my favorite, the honey baked ham. Of course we will be having family members over, and if like my family Thanksgiving, you have 12 aunts and uncles, and about 30 cousins, grandparents, and who knows who else, there will be to say the least a crowd, and more often than not, there will be a visiting dog or two as well. So where does this leave your dog? Often times the boarding facilities get extremely busy Walking not only gives him the apbecause most people would propriate exercise, but also gives him rather board the dog than some good quality time with his family members, which he will be lacking once deal with the headache. My the guests arrive. question is this. Why should our dog’s lives be turned upside down, due to the fact we don’t want the headache? Let’s look at this and determine what we can do to make this most special time of year special for our dogs too. First, the most important thing is not to ignore your dog’s needs. For the sake of this article we will call the dog Jake. He needs to be walked on a regular basis. Not turned out in the back yard. Walking not only gives him the appropriate exercise, but also gives him some good quality time with his family members, which he will be lacking once the guests arrive. In addition, the walk will help to maintain in his mind who the leader is, which will help to prevent additional problems once the guests are gone. Second, make sure to maintain his basic schedule. We want to be 10

November 2010 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

sure he is fed at his appropriate times, goes out to the bathroom accordingly, and gets YOUR attention during the day, if only for a couple of minutes. Rest assured, your company will give him plenty of attention, often times going way beyond reasonable with what they allow Jake to do, which brings us to the next point. Have a list of rules for the dog. Get creative and make it cute. Every computer these days has a program that will help you create a cute list of rules. These should include the following: 1. Please do not feed me, as it will make me a Pepto Bismal® addict! (or any other cute way to imply feeding him table food can make him sick). 2. Don’t let me jump on you without your invitation (a rule every well mannered dog should follow anyway). 3. Please don’t talk to me if I am barking….I want to be heard too! (while this isn’t the case, if people give him baby talk while he barks, he will continue to bark, creating excitement and chaos which we don’t want!) 4. Please don’t pull my tail!! (like I said make it cute). Your rules may differ, but print off a couple of copies and put them in Jake’s common areas. This will really help. Finally, take every precaution to keep Jake safe. If you serve turkey, go with one that is boneless, or cut if off the bone prior to serving. This will help people to resist the temptation of sliding Jake a bone. Also make sure that Jake gets some quiet time and some privacy. Remember there are five gifts to give your dog. Time, consistency, privacy, silence, and a job. Keep those in mind and you will have a great Thanksgiving and Christmas, without having to board Jake, and make memories to last a lifetime! Adam has been working with people and their problems with dogs for over 15 years. He is a member of the International Association of Canine Professionals, and has been featured on Fox 8, WXII 12, CBS news, as well as published by many other local news outlets. He has been a training consultant for Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue, helping dogs that many people said couldn’t be helped, and has volunteered with many organizations across the Piedmont Triad. After learning our whole family (humans included) needed to communicate better, we enrolled all three of our dogs Ginger, Lucy and Ellie into your boarding program. The owner training we went through each week was equally as important as our dogs’ training. Now our dogs are a pleasure to us. We are able to have friends and family over with no concern over the dogs misbehaving. Outings are enjoyable with no incessant tugging or altercations. Thanks for making a difference in our lives, we look forward to working with you again and again in the future!

After working with Adam and Valerie our girl is such a pleasure, in the house, on walks, and with visitors. Thanks so much for helping us to have the experience of dog ownership we hoped for.

Animal Rescue & Foster Program Please call to adopt us!

Grayson. Meet Grayson! This handsome guy is a 1 year old Dachshund/Terrier mix. He is full grown at 19 lbs. Grayson can be a little shy when he first meets new people, but he warms up quickly! We think he would be happiest in a calmer home with adults or older children. Grayson loves to play with toys, especially if he has someone to play fetch with and he gets along really well with other dogs. In the evenings, he likes to hang out right beside you while you watch TV. Grayson is up-to-date on routine shots, neutered and housetrained. If you would like to give Grayson a wonderful forever home, please contact ARFP at 574-9600 to learn more about meeting him. n

Ollie.

Something pretty bazaar happened to Ollie. He was living in Atlanta when his owner was arrested. A friend brought him to Greensboro only to abandon him at a veterinary hospital. Now he finds himself in ARFP and thinks he’s pretty lucky to have found all these friends. Ollie is neutered, declawed, and up to date on his vaccinations. He is also negative for feline diseases. Ollie gets along with all of his 4 legged friends here and has become quite the purrbox. Ollie is under one year of age. Would you like to meet Ollie? Call 574-9600 for more details.

Helen is a terrier/dalmation

second time in Triad Happy Tails because her forever family must not have seen her in the August issue and we want to make sure they have a chance to find her! Ziva was born 3-1-09 and weighs in at a healthy 64 lbs. She is a very clever dog who will amaze you with her athleticism, entertain you with her antics, and win you over with her charm. She loves to run and play in the back yard with her doggie friends and, when indoors, will try to get the cats to join in on the game as well. She loves children of all sizes but would do best with those that can handle a very playful medium to large size puppy. She is crate trained and will sleep all night long in her crate without a sound.

cross who was born around the first of August. All scientific tests (banging pans, whistling, dropping loud things on the floor) suggest that she is completely deaf, but she has the curiosity and joy of living as Helen Keller, her namesake, had. In just a couple of days she’s learned to sit on command and is working on “stay” and “come” with great success--all done with hand signals. Helen is great with other dogs, but a little too enthusiastic for a cat’s taste. She loves every person she meets. She’s a very happy, affectionate girl who enjoys sharing her toys with everyone in the room. She’ll surely be a wonderful, laugh-inducing companion.

Smokey is my name because of my beautiful blue, gray fur, which looks like the haze of the Smokey Mountains. I was born in the spring of 2010 in an old warehouse off of a busy thoroughfare. My playground was a drive through at Burger King and that’s where a nice lady rescued me. I want to learn the joys of an indoor life and need a special person to show me the ropes. Being such a shy, handsome guy, I would learn best if I could bond with one kind, gentle human to whom I would be forever grateful. I show my affection by purring loudly, rolling around with pleasure when you scratch my belly and kneading your sore muscles with my little white paws. I love playing with a string, carrying my toy mouse in my mouth, and playing soccer with my ball. Please call 574-9600 if you would like to meet me.

Ask

Q A

Where did Canine Influenza originate?

Christine E. Hunt, DVM

Dr. Christine E. Hunt received her B.S. in Zoology from N.C. State University, cum laude, followed by her veterinary doctorate from Oklahoma State University. She has practiced small animal medicine, dentistry and surgery in Greensboro for 27 years. In 2003, she opened University Animal Hospital. Her interests lie in geriatric medicine, pain management and advanced dentistry.

What is Canine Influenza? Canine Influenza is a highly contagious strain of H3N8 virus that causes classic flu symptoms in dogs. Symptoms include coughing, runny nose and eyes, and fever. Because most of our dog population has no immunity to this new virus, almost every exposed dog will become infected. Only dogs that have been vaccinated or previously infected and recovered are exempt. Approximately 80% of infected dogs will display mild to moderate symptoms lasting for several weeks, while the remaining 20% can experience serious complications that require extensive hospitalization.

Canine Influenza is an emerging virus that has been spreading slowly across the United States. In 2003, the Equine Influenza Virus mutated, as influenza viruses often do, and crossed species to infect racing greyhounds in Florida. Since then, the virus has now been identified in at least 30 states including North Carolina and Virginia. The most recent cases were reported in Asheville with additional suspect reports from Hickory.

Q A

What dogs are at risk? Dogs at risk include those that: • Attend dog events or travel to high risk areas; • Go to large daycare facilities, dog parks or group training classes; • Board at large kennels or visit large grooming facilities; and • Have owners who volunteer, work or are adding a new dog friend from an animal shelter, rescue organization or pet store that purchases puppies from high risk areas.

Q A

What is the treatment for Canine Influenza?

In some cases, a serious pneumonia has resulted in a mortality rate as high as 8%. This is considerably higher than the 1% mortality rate reported with human influenza. Dogs infected with canine flu can shed the virus for up to 10 days before showing any signs of illness. The virus spreads between dogs by direct contact (licking or nuzzling), indirect contact (coughing or sneezing) or through contaminated surfaces (human hands, clothes and floor surfaces).

If your dog is exposed to any of the risk factors listed above, a vaccination is currently available to reduce the severity of H3N8 Canine Influenza virus significantly. Like other vaccines that your dog has received, it initially takes two doses of the vaccine given two to four weeks apart to provide protection against canine flu. After the vaccine series, your dog should receive annual boosters. If you have questions regarding Canine Influenza, the influenza vaccination, or if your dog has possible symptoms of the infection, be sure to contact your veterinarian. Your dog’s veterinarian is your best resource for information.

Feral Cat Assistance Program Please call to adopt us!

336.378.0878 www.feralcatassistance.org

Wolfie is a beautiful medium haired tortoiseshell kitten. Wolfie was rescued with her one-eyed momma and 3 siblings after a neighbor tried to shoot her mom. Wolfie is the calm leader of the litter, she likes to sit back, with her front legs crossed and make sure that everyone is ok. She can be a little nervous at first but loves a cuddle with a good chin rub and will purr out a song for you. She loves anything that makes a noise once she figures out what it is, and thinks litter box scooping is awesome. She is the sister of Bailey and Diamond. Wolfie has been spayed and microchipped and is up-to-date on vaccines.

Diamond is an adorable short hair grey and white male. Diamond was rescued with his one eyed momma and siblings after a neighbor tried to shoot his mom. Diamond was the littlest in the litter, but has caught up to his siblings just fine. He has a “Diamond” shaped grey spot on his belly. He loves to play and has a quirky way of sticking his left foot out to the side when he eats. He is super duper special. He, like his brothers and sisters, loves litter scooping time. He is the brother of Wolfie and Bailey. Diamond is neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccines.

Wolfie’s adoption fee is $110. Would you like to meet Wolfie? Call 378-0878 for details. n

Diamond’s adoption fee is $110. Do you have room in your home for this adorable guy? Call 378-0878. n

Caleb was only 2 weeks old, when he and his sister lost their Mom. FCAP took them in and bottle-fed them. Caleb is a wild man (but in a good way!). He loves to play, play and then play some more, especially with his sister Eden. When he is not playing, he wants you to pick him up and love on him! He will stand on his hind legs, balanced against your shins, until you pick him up and cradle him in your arms while rubbing his belly. He also has lots and lots to say, especially if he has not seen you in a while. Caleb is very high energy and will require a lot of time and attention. Consider a playmate to keep him entertained (especially his sister Eden- he LOVES her!). Caleb will be neutered and microchipped prior to adoption. Caleb’s adoption fee is $110. Call 378-0878 for more details. n

Loki.

Loki’s mother was killed by a car; he and his siblings were rescued by a kind woman who found them in her yard. She was unable to care for them, due to her health, so FCAP took the babies and bottle fed them. This is Loki...named after the half white, half black faced character in the original Star Trek series. He was the littlest kitten. When we got him, we weren’t sure that he would live, but now.....he is a bundle of energy!!! He loves to explore and leads the others in the quest for a new Galaxy. Loki is neutered, up-to-date on all vaccines, and microchipped. Loki’s adoption fee is $110. Call 378-0878 to find out more about this bundle of energy. n

Clover.

Hi, I’m Clover and I am one sweet cat. I’m a solid orange female, which is rare I hear. I came from a very bad situation where a lot of kitties were starving. I used to be very skinny, but as you can see, I have put on weight. They say I am a loving kitty, I think that is because I love to give kisses. I’m looking for a family to love and to call my own. Would you like to meet me?

My adoption fee is $110. Call 378-0878 to find out more about me. n

Nutmeg.

Here is Nutmeg. As you can see, he is a real handsome buff and white long haired boy. A bit shy at first, but when he gets to know you, he turns into a real sweet fella. He loves to play with his feather toy and will leap high in the air after it, keeping you entertained. Nutmeg will be neutered and microchipped prior to adoption.

Polly & Petunia.

336.297.5020 www.adoptshelterpets.org

These two sisters are so cute! Polly is the unusual one that was born polydactyl, or with 6 toes and Petunia has the darker orange markings on her head. They are white with orange tabby markings and they are only 3 months old. The sisters were surrendered as found and they could not keep the kittens. They are both curious and funny to watch. They will take turns to be outgoing and then turn shy and let the other one take the lead! In the photo, Polly is on the left and Petunia is on the right. Both of them have been spayed and are ready to join their new home.

Ophelia is a lovely, gentle girl! She is so beautiful in her medium length black, orange and white tortoiseshell coat. She is content and happily shares her kennel. She was found by a benevolent person that did not want harm to come to her, so she was brought to the shelter. Ophelia is over 1 year old now and she has been spayed since coming into the shelter. This girl is ready for the new love in her life and looks forward to being your best friend!

Would you like to adopt these two sisters? Come by to meet them and ask for Polly by ID 11303737 and Petunia by ID 11303674. n

Please ask for Ophelia by ID 10425371 when you come to meet her. n

Samantha is a friendly outgoing beauty. She is a chocolate and tan colored medium haired Siamese mix with blue eyes. A beautiful girl! Samantha is a small sized 4 year old that can be curious. She was thinking about something tasty here but settled for some loving affection. Sadly, Samantha had to be surrendered due to issues with the landlord, so now she is searching for her new home. She will soon be spayed as part of her adoption fee. Have you been searching for such a beauty? Search no more! Ask for Samantha by ID 11401417. n

Arwin

Kimmie is a pistol! She is a large girl who likes to curl up to rest comfortably and doesn’t want her kennel mate to jostle her when she is in nap mode. Kimmie can get vocal and hiss at her kennel mate when she comes around rubbing up on her, but the hiss is nothing serious, just vexation. Kimmie is a black and tan torbie that was found by a compassionate person. She is about 5 years old and is glad to know that she will soon be spayed! She sure enjoys getting some nice scratches and loving; so she may make a nice lap kitty for you. Come visit Kimmie and ask for ID 10720220 when you come. n

is a relaxed and calm natured gentleman in his good looking charcoal grey and white coat. Arwin is a friendly medium sized boy that was found by an Animal Control officer this summer. He had been here at the shelter once before when he was adopted almost 7 years ago! Arwin is now 8 years old and wishes he had a companion to share life with and snuggle up with. He will make a wonderful new friend for you. Neutered long ago, he is ready to go to his new home today and he hopes his day comes soon!

Olyvia is a playful and outgoing orange tabby but she also enjoys getting some one on one time with a loving person. She is also sharing her kennel quite well with another great feline, Krystal. Olyvia may have been fortunate enough to be found by Animal Control, but she is just too socialized to have been on the street very long. She is about 2 years old and will soon be spayed by the shelter’s surgical staff. Olyvia is going to make a very nice addition to your home and your heart!

Could you give Arwin the home he deserves? Come visit him and ask for him by ID 644988. n

Emma’s Story by Ginny Wiltsey

E

mma’s story starts about ten months ago when a woman called the Humane Society to report that she had found a starved dog and didn’t know what to do with it. She was forbidden from having any pets by her landlord. Without ever meeting Emma, she tugged at my heart. Something was telling me to go get her so I left to pick her up.

spleenectomy and was spayed. Poor gal, hadn’t she endured enough? After healing from her surgery she went back for heartworm treatment. After nine months and after her medical procedures, I resided to the fact that Emma was ours and she was here to stay with us – until Happy Tails put her in their magazine. The most wonderful couple contacted me about Emma. This was and is the only inquiry we ever received. I called her foster mom, so excited that we had a great inquiry about Emma. Before processing their application – I felt and sensed this couple was the right match for Emma. Upon approval of their application came the home trial for Emma. Needless to say, Emma never returned to her foster mom. On behalf of Emma and all of us at the Humane Society, we would like to THANK YOU Happy Tails for helping Emma, a wonderful gal, find her forever loving home!

Sedgefield Animal Hospital and Dental Center

“Where Quality and Caring are more than just words” Emma weighed only eleven pounds – you could count every vertebra and rib on her body. She was heartworm positive and in very poor health. Poor gal was in terrible shape, yet her tail never stopped wagging and the kisses never stopped. Another victim at the hands of man, starved and dumped on the streets – discarded like a bag of rubbish – shame on us! When her foster mom picked her up she fell in love with Emma. She is such a gentle loving soul. It just never ceases to amaze me how dogs are so willing to forgive and LOVE us no matter how horribly we treat them. Wow, what we can learn from the animals if we just stopped for a moment to learn. Emma was so underweight, the vet did not want to do any medical procedure until she gained some of her weight back, and until she was healthier. Her foster mom continued to nurse her back to a healthy weight. When Emma went for her heartworm treatment she was a healthy thirty-five pounds. At this time, they found her blood was infected, which meant removal of her spleen. She had a

Dog Poop:

www.DoodieFreeZone.com

More Than Just a Nuisance by Susan Gelatka – President, Doodie Free Zone

Dog Poop - more than just a nuisance… You hate to see it and you hate to step in it, but, if you have a dog you need to pick it up and here are a few undisputable reasons why. Obviously there is the fact that it’s poop, I mean really, if your dog could talk, he’d probably ask you to help him out and clean up that stinky mess. Then, there’s the real health issue for you and your dog because there’s a lot of crap in that poop. What kind you ask? Let’s learn a little more….. Dog poop is a significant contributing factor to the spread of diseases, bacteria, and protozoa such as Roundworm, Tapeworm, Salmonellosis, Giardia, and E. Coli, just to name a few. Kids run the greatest risk of illness from these because they’re prone to play in the grass or dirt then put their hands in their mouths or rub their eyes. Even just unknowingly stepping in the dog poop and then walking into your home will track in

potential parasites and bacteria where it will contaminate your carpet and floors, and those who come in contact with them. Parasitic infections can make humans extremely sick, and for pregnant women - can pose a serious harm to their unborn child. Many people think that dog poop “just goes away”. Not so! If the poop is not

picked up it will break down but still lay in the ground for years. Now, when it rains, and the ground gets saturated, the bacteria and parasites will run off into the storm drains which run into the rivers and streams and eventually, our drinking water. Pet poop has been considered responsible for almost one fourth of the fecal contamination of the waterways -those very same waterways from which we get our drinking water. A lot of dog parents simply do not have the time in their busy days to schedule regular dog poop clean-up, or maybe they simply cannot stomach this most dreaded chore. This is where the professional service known as a “Pooper Scooper service” will make your life a lot easier healthier and cleaner. This affordable weekly or twice weekly clean-up service will assure that your yard is a clean and healthy environment for you, your family and your bff, that’s Best Furry Friend.

Red Dog Farm

Please contact Red Dog Farm via website to find out how to adopt us!

Vivi.

Emma came to us after being found wandering the streets by the staff at Emerald Pointe. Emma was a little on the shy side and didn’t know if she could trust humans. Several months later she now LOVES her people and enjoys visitors! With help from her foster family and trainers at Shiloh K9, Emma has gotten her confidence back and has become a content dog.

What can we tell you about Vivi? Well for starters, she is the perfect dog! She is your all-around happy young dog who LOVES everyone and anyone. She is an active girl who would enjoy a family that would play with her, teach her new things, or include her in their daily routine. We don’t think her tail has stopped wagging since she came into our program. Yes, it even wags in her sleep!

If you are interested and want more information on this super pup please visit www.reddogfarm.com or call 644-7807! n

Saffron is as sweet as they come. She came to Red Dog Farm about 6 months ago, very pregnant and barely 24 hours later she gave birth to 9 kittens. Since then Saffron has taken in two orphaned kittens and helped to socialize many other cats in the program and at our vet’s office. She is a very gentle girl and loves to be petted all day long. She is about 18 months old, spayed, and up-to-date on her vaccines. Do you have room in your heart for this one of a kind girl? Visit www.reddogfarm.com or call 644-7807 for more information! n

Molly came to Red Dog

If you are interested in adopting sweet Emma, please check her out at www.reddogfarm.com! n

Miley was found as a little itty-bitty kitten wandering the streets with her brother. She is your typical, orange tabby kitten who is just extremely friendly and loves any attention she can get! Won’t you take this little girl home? She comes with a guarantee that she will melt your heart.

Please visit www.reddogfarm.com for more information on this sweet kitty! n

Farm after her owner died unexpectedly. She is a gorgeous 14 hand mare who is very confident and lets us scratch her belly and pick up her feet. Molly was evaluated by our trainers at Cooler Horsemanship and did great in the round pen and in ground work and seems to be quite eager to please. Molly will need an adopter with enough experience to tune up her training (or willing to have a trainer work with them) but should make a nice show horse or trail horse for an intermediate rider.

Angelo is a very large (150 lbs.) Spanish Goat. He was surrendered by owners who were ignorant as to proper care of a goat and had kept him tied to a tree. Like what eventually happens to all goats tied to trees, he got tangled in the rope and had it wrapped around his neck and legs. Thankfully we were able to convince his owners to surrender him so that we could untangle him and move him to a safer environment. This handsome sweetheart hopes to find his forever home with a group of large goats or maybe a Mini Horse to graze with.

Please visit www.reddogfarm.com for more information on this very well mannered girl! n

Jackson is an adorable little boy who was born with diabetes and will need medication for the rest of his life. To make matters worse, this medication will cost $100 a month. Despite these circumstances, Jackson has taught us all a lesson about being thankful for life. He remains the most affectionate kitty we have ever come across. His condition has not slowed him down - he plays hard and has fun all day with his siblings. If you have the means, please consider adding little Jackson to your family. He really deserves a good home, and any family would be lucky to have such a wonderful kitty! This cat is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, dewormed, microchipped and is negative for feline leukemia and FIV. Jackson’s adoption fee is $125. Call 375-3222 for more details.

Gabe is quite a handsome boxer-pit bull terrier mix. He is a total velcro dog--loves to be doted on and loves being by his owner’s side. Gabe loves to sleep in the bed but watch out - he makes himself comfy with every pillow he can find! He is good with adults and older children, but would do best in a home with no small dogs or cats. Gabe has been neutered and is up-to-date on his vaccinations. Would you like to meet Gabe? Call 375.3222 to find out more. n

Personal Assistant Service -by Lisa Head, owner of Lisa’s Doggone Grooming

Yes pet parents, it’s that time of year again. Our children have gone back to school and the autumn leaves are falling. During the hustle and bustle of back to school time it’s very easy to forget about the other kids in the family - the fur kids. We might be into fall, but try not to fall too far behind on your pets grooming. For many breeds, regular grooming is essential for their health and well being. Missing a much needed grooming appointment can end up costing us more money in the long run. When your pets hair becomes longer than normal it becomes a breeding ground for yeast and bacteria and can easily become tangled. Undercoat that doesn’t get brushed out will also become matted, sometimes requiring the need to be shaved. If you’re unable to see your groomer, be it for financial or scheduling issues, here are some tips to keep your pooch in good shape. The most important thing that you can do for your dog is to keep them brushed thoroughly. Brushing your pet can be a good bonding experience. Use a good slicker style brush and brush a small area at a time. For a short coated breed, such as a lab, you can use a good deshedding tool instead of a brush. Examine your dog’s nails and make sure they’re not turning to the side or growing into your pets foot pads. If you see either of these things then you need to call your groomer or veterinarian and make an appointment for a nail trimming. A missed nail trim can lead to vet bills. If bathing your dog at home be sure to brush your dog thoroughly both before and after the bath and make sure to dry the dog completely. Please make sure to rinse until you see no more suds and then rinse some more. Leaving soap next to your pets skin can cause a severe skin rash that can require medical attention. With these grooming tips in mind have a happy and healthy fall season.

Dodger has been with GSRA most of his life. Even though his dad’s DNA was pretty dominant, his mom, a GSRA alum, is pure bred GSD. All of his siblings look just like him - a cross between hound and lab, but huge! Dodger, close to 1 year of age, is already 80 lbs and still growing. Good with dogs, cats and German Shepherd kids, he is easy-going, fun-loving, Rescue & Adoptions smart as a whip and an excellent watch dog. He totally enjoys just hanging out with his humans. Dodger is the perfect German Shepherd dog in his own unique body and he is waiting patiently for his forever family to come along and take him home. If you would like to meet Dodger and give him the loving home he deserves, please visit www.gsdrescue.org for contact information. n

Gabby, or Zam Upgrade, is so much fun! She excitedly plays with balls and stuffed toys and gives them back so we can toss them again. At three and a half years old, she is curious about everything, enjoys plastic kiddy pools, and is very affectionate. She loves Greyhound Friends of NC being petted and just hanging out with people but not cats. Gabby is a real, brindle beauty and will make a great addition to your family. If you would like to meet Gabby, please call 643-0233 or visit our website, www.greyhoundfriends.com for contact information. n

Sassy.

My foster family says I am a lovely house guest. I am completely trustworthy in the house on my own. I do not counter surf, even being tested with unattended food. I am a full figure girl and have been working on my weight with a bit of a diet and exercise. I am trimming right up! But even at my ideal weight, I will be a big girl. I am a very happy girl and smile all the time. When I wag my tail, my whole NC Lab Rescue body goes with it. I can barely contain myself. I am great with children and other dogs, even tiny ones. I am so big that I might not be the best dog for a family with young children because I would knock them right over, not meaning to of course. If you would like to meet me, please contact us through our website, www.labrescuenc.org. n

Gizmo. Hi! I am Gizmo and if you are a lady I would like to get to know you!! If you are a man, sorry, but no. I had some bad things happen to me at the hands of a man and now I don’t like or trust them. I really need to be in a 1 or 2 woman household. I was mistreated before and I just need some patience and understanding (so right now I am not Friends of Penny Min Pin Rescue going to be the best with kids either), but I have so much love to give a Mommy or two!! I need a small social circle - new people in and out of the house would freak me out! But if you would like a cute little guy who will make you the object of all his love and affection, then I could be the little guy for you! For more info, please email my foster mom at dobe2minpin2@yahoo. com, she loves me a lot and can tell you all about me! n

Delilah.

You can see everything you need to know about Delilah right in her smile; she’ll love unconditionally - and she just needs someone to show her the same!! She is a young, intelligent pittie mix that knows all her basic commands, plus will impress you with extras, like shake & roll over! Delilah Carolina Care Bullies loves to play with dogs, so she would prefer an opposite sex playmate in her new home that doesn’t mind her activity level. She is also pretty non-chalant around cats from what we have seen!! She doesn’t mind sharing her toys with adults but for some reason she is more stingy around kids, so we ask she be placed with adults or older-children families. She is crate-trained, housetrained, & uses the bathroom quickly outside during her potty breaks. Email Amanda at amanda@carebullies.org for details. n

Kiera is a cute, petite, stumpy bobtail Manx, born around Feb. 1, 2007. She arrived at TCR terrified and thin, but has blossomed into a very sweetnatured and affectionate cat, who adores being petted. When given attention, Kiera paces back and forth emitting a HUGE purr for such a little lady! She Tailless Cat Rescue also loves to curl up on a lap, and doesn’t mind sharing the lap with another cat if necessary. Kiera loves all the other cats at TCR and would like to be in a home with at least one other cat as she enjoys the company of other cats and loves to play tag with them. She’s unconcerned about dogs but would prefer a home without small children. She is vaccinated, spayed, microchipped, and FeLV/FIV negative. For more information e-mail taillesscatrescue@hotmail.com or visit www.taillesscatrescue.com. n

Brittney

came into rescue a little insecure, wanting to show us she was the boss, most likely due to being abandoned and going to a few temporary homes. English Springer Rescue America We are working on reversing that role as well as refining her social skills. A typical Springer, Brittney is 8 years old, very smart and responding nicely to basic training. She gets along well with the resident Springer and the three legged cat. She has been boarded a few times at kennel where the dogs have group exercise a few times a day. Her report card states she plays well with others! The best home for Brittney will be an adultonly home where she is the only dog. She is completely housetrained, healthy and up-to-date on all her vetting. Email inquiry@esracarolinas.com for more details on Brittney. n

Cameo is 1 year old and loves to cuddle. She’s such a sweet girl, a great house dog and would be a fabulous addition to almost any loving home. She is house-trained and currently uses a doggie door. Everything Barks A Unique Doggy Boutique For Dogs, Their Owners & Friends

E

verything Barks opened on October 15, 2010. After selling Willow Run Boarding Kennels in July 1999, they retired. This retirement went on for eleven years…and then…they got tired of being retired. This was a logical move for them as they had a gift shop in the early 80’s and a dog kennel in the 90’s. Now they can surround themselves with gifts that relate to dogs as well as humans, incorporating the best of both worlds. Their business is a unique doggy boutique, with gifts for dogs, their owners, and friends. You’ll find most breeds represented with items from dog bone paper clips to breed related luggage tags, pencil holders, towels and pot holders, salt and pepper shakers, garden flags, breed related figurines, and throw pillows just to name a

few. The Weisses have traveled around quite a bit and have found gift items here and there, and dog items from place to place, but I have not seen a collection of items they carry in one place. Their philosophy is to find the most unique, quality products at a fair price and to offer their customers one of the largest selections of items in one place. They are a one stop doggy shop. Many of these items can’t be found anywhere else in the Triad, this is truly a one-of-a-kind shop. Kernersville has an old fashion downtown hosting many locally owned specialty businesses. Its a delightful experience and welcome change, like stepping back in time. Oh, and bring your well behaved dog, everyone’s welcome at Everything Barks, it’s truly an ambience you must experience! A tiny sampling of the inventory found at Everything Barks. Vast array of gifts and novelty items for any occasion. Looking for something special? Give them a call at 336-608-9941.

Hedgecock's

R

ichard Hedgecock lives on a small farm with his wife Penny, sixty dogs, thirteen cats and five horses. His wife rescues animals and Richard appreciates the serendipity and inspiration they bring to their lives. His motto is to paint from what he lives and his shop is filled with his passion for what he loves. His work comes from the intimate knowledge of his subjects and this certainly shows in his creations. There are many wildlife artists, but Richard’s experience with animals tamed by humans and becoming dependent on them, has given him a perspective he calls “Midlife”. As a storyteller at heart, he believes the story behind the painting is more important to him than any technical quality like texture, temperature or balance. He’s trying his hand at writing and a book is in the works. The shop also offers photo The Surrogate, Richard’s painting of restoration and Giclée printing. his wife with some of their many pets.
