Welcome to Jennifer Frazier

his has been a couple of great weeks! A favorite of our’s, Emma, was finally adopted after a long wait. This is what its all about, we were thrilled when we got the news Emma was in a loving home. We hope you enjoy this month’s issue of Triad Happy Tails Magazine, which features more than 70 adoptable animals from 24 different shelters and rescue organizations in our area. Sometimes our publication can present a problem, as in the case of a friend we heard from recently. She had a copy of our latest magazine in her car where her granddaughters found it. They started looking through the magazine and picked out the two dogs they wanted to bring home. When their mom informed them this was not possible, a huge ruckus ensued. Unfortunately, this is a draw back to our publication. We constantly hear our book is “trouble,” people want at least two or three animals out of each issue. When we came up with the idea for our magazine, we both had envisioned this to be the case. A big shout out to all our readers who have adopted new friends through our publication. The holidays are approaching and we’d like to remind every-

one to please think carefully when adopting a pet for the family holiday gift. That cute little kitten, puppy or lizard is a big responsibility. A living creature requires space, veterinary care, nourishment, love and a lot of work. This is not a disposable item. Once the excitement has passed, it is still there needing love and care. If you do decide to get a pet, please check the local shelter or rescue groups. You will find plenty of beautiful animals that desperately need good homes. What a wonderful gift for everyone, especially the homeless animal. Remember to send us your holiday pet photos. We will devote a page in our December issue to all creatures, great and small. This can be any holiday, so send them in so we can share with our readers. We love seeing success stories, funny pet adventures and interesting photos/videos. What Was the Next Step? Animal Rescue and Foster Program by Sharon Gray

t was the end of 2001. We were approaching our ten year anniversary. What to do, what to do, to “grow” the Animal Rescue & Foster Program (ARFP)? It was a Tuesday night Board of Director’s meeting and the question on the table was, “What is the next step we should take?” Within one week, we were looking for a spot to take ARFP to the next step. A place to call home is what we were aiming for. We spent months looking at everything, from retail space to a kennel going into bankruptcy. We weren’t quite sure what we wanted, but we knew for sure that we would not bite off more than we could chew. Late spring of 2002, one of our board members found out that Guilford Garden Center had just bought the brick house at 705 Milner Drive. That brick house had raised a family for many years, and then had become Hunter’s Needlepoint Shop. The house would soon be available for rent. We went to see the house. We knew immediately we

had found our home if Chuck Voight, owner of Guilford Garden Center, would rent to an animal rescue group. Chuck had the same concerns that everyone did; how would we handle the odor, how would we handle the noise, and how many animals would we house there? We promised to be the best tenants ever and, with his employees, convinced him that it was a good fit for both of us! In June of 2002, we had the keys to this perfect little house which would soon be the Next Step Adoption Center. Volunteers worked non stop painting, tearing up carpet, sanding hardwood floors, laying linoleum, uncovering counter tops, laying tile, scrubbing and cleaning. Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months. We all learned how to use a dremel and a sander, we learned how to stain hardwood floors, and we learned exactly how helping homeless animals had come to make us a family. By mid September our home was almost

It was only ready due to the support of this wonderful community that we live in. Many wonderful companies and people donated product, labor, and time to help make this happen. The grand opening and ribbon cutting at the Next Step Adoption Center was in October 2002. Cindy Farmer and Emily Byrd graciously agreed to come for the ribbon cutting. Fox 8 covered the opening. We had wine, desserts, and live music. The event was hosted by many very proud ARFP volunteers. This was our next step in growing the Animal Rescue & Foster Program to be able to help even more homeless animals. Our first resident was an orange and white tabby cat aptly named Milner and he was adopted that night. We knew we had created something wonderful and it indeed has been! The Next Step Adoption Center is located at 705 Milner Drive in Greensboro. It is filled with volunteers and animals on Wednesdays from 5-8pm, Saturdays from

11am-3pm and on Sundays from 1-4pm. We truly enjoy seeing people react to our adoption center when they walk in the front door. They come expecting to see a shelter or a kennel and they find a home, a home where the people all have one thing is common; their love of helping homeless animals. Foster parents are always willing to introduce you to their foster dogs and cats and tell you their likes and dislikes. Our biggest reward is when we can match up a dog or cat with the perfect person or family. This is why you will often hear a volunteer say “tell us what you are looking for.” The adoption center houses 7-10 felines full time, and is a cheery place to visit whether you are a cat lover or a dog lover. Window treatments match the lilac color theme in the front room and the retail area, while the kitchen sports a yellow and black look with stenciling on the walls and cabinets. The “cage-less” playroom is a kitty’s wonderland with cat

trees, toys and scratching toys. Chairs have been reupholstered to match the window treatments which match the wall colors. Not one to leave a room untouched, volunteers equipped the bathroom with a restaurant sink to bathe cats in, while the canine window treatments match the gray and burgundy tile. What we can do to make this most special time of year special for our dogs too.

s we approach this time of the year, we will all be getting sick to our stomachs by eating turkey, dressing, pumpkin pie, and of course my favorite, the honey baked ham. Of course we will be having family members over, and if like my family Thanksgiving, you have 12 aunts and uncles, and about 30 cousins, grandparents, and who knows who else, there will be to say the least a crowd, and more often than not, there will be a visiting dog or two as well. So where does this leave your dog? Often times the boarding facilities get extremely busy Walking not only gives him the apbecause most people would propriate exercise, but also gives him rather board the dog than some good quality time with his family members, which he will be lacking once deal with the headache. My the guests arrive. question is this. Why should our dog’s lives be turned upside down, due to the fact we don’t want the headache? Let’s look at this and determine what we can do to make this most special time of year special for our dogs too. First, the most important thing is not to ignore your dog’s needs. For the sake of this article we will call the dog Jake. He needs to be walked on a regular basis. Not turned out in the back yard. Walking not only gives him the appropriate exercise, but also gives him some good quality time with his family members, which he will be lacking once the guests arrive. In addition, the walk will help to maintain in his mind who the leader is, which will help to prevent additional problems once the guests are gone. Second, make sure to maintain his basic schedule. We want to be 10

sure he is fed at his appropriate times, goes out to the bathroom accordingly, and gets YOUR attention during the day, if only for a couple of minutes. Rest assured, your company will give him plenty of attention, often times going way beyond reasonable with what they allow Jake to do, which brings us to the next point. Have a list of rules for the dog. Get creative and make it cute. Every computer these days has a program that will help you create a cute list of rules. These should include the following: 1. Please do not feed me, as it will make me a Pepto Bismal® addict! (or any other cute way to imply feeding him table food can make him sick). 2. Don’t let me jump on you without your invitation (a rule every well mannered dog should follow anyway). 3. Please don’t talk to me if I am barking….I want to be heard too! (while this isn’t the case, if people give him baby talk while he barks, he will continue to bark, creating excitement and chaos which we don’t want!) 4. Please don’t pull my tail!! (like I said make it cute). Your rules may differ, but print off a couple of copies and put them in Jake’s common areas. This will really help. Finally, take every precaution to keep Jake safe. If you serve turkey, go with one that is boneless, or cut if off the bone prior to serving. This will help people to resist the temptation of sliding Jake a bone. Also make sure that Jake gets some quiet time and some privacy. Remember there are five gifts to give your dog. Time, consistency, privacy, silence, and a job. Keep those in mind and you will have a great Thanksgiving and Christmas, without having to board Jake, and make memories to last a lifetime! Dr. Christine E. Hunt received her B.S. in Zoology from N.C. State University, cum laude, followed by her veterinary doctorate from Oklahoma State University. She has practiced small animal medicine, dentistry and surgery in Greensboro for 27 years. In 2003, she opened University Animal Hospital. Her interests lie in geriatric medicine, pain management and advanced dentistry.

What is Canine Influenza? Canine Influenza is a highly contagious strain of H3N8 virus that causes classic flu symptoms in dogs. Symptoms include coughing, runny nose and eyes, and fever. Because most of our dog population has no immunity to this new virus, almost every exposed dog will become infected. Only dogs that have been vaccinated or previously infected and recovered are exempt. Approximately 80% of infected dogs will display mild to moderate symptoms lasting for several weeks, while the remaining 20% can experience serious complications that require extensive hospitalization.

Canine Influenza is an emerging virus that has been spreading slowly across the United States. In 2003, the Equine Influenza Virus mutated, as influenza viruses often do, and crossed species to infect racing greyhounds in Florida. Since then, the virus has now been identified in at least 30 states including North Carolina and Virginia. The most recent cases were reported in Asheville with additional suspect reports from Hickory.

What dogs are at risk? Dogs at risk include those that: • Attend dog events or travel to high risk areas; • Go to large daycare facilities, dog parks or group training classes; • Board at large kennels or visit large grooming facilities; and • Have owners who volunteer, work or are adding a new dog friend from an animal shelter, rescue organization or pet store that purchases puppies from high risk areas.

What is the treatment for Canine Influenza?

In some cases, a serious pneumonia has resulted in a mortality rate as high as 8%. This is considerably higher than the 1% mortality rate reported with human influenza. Dogs infected with canine flu can shed the virus for up to 10 days before showing any signs of illness. The virus spreads between dogs by direct contact (licking or nuzzling), indirect contact (coughing or sneezing) or through contaminated surfaces (human hands, clothes and floor surfaces).

If your dog is exposed to any of the risk factors listed above, a vaccination is currently available to reduce the severity of H3N8 Canine Influenza virus significantly. Like other vaccines that your dog has received, it initially takes two doses of the vaccine given two to four weeks apart to provide protection against canine flu. After the vaccine series, your dog should receive annual boosters. If you have questions regarding Canine Influenza, the influenza vaccination, or if your dog has possible symptoms of the infection, be sure to contact your veterinarian. Your dog’s veterinarian is your best resource for information.

mma’s story starts about ten months ago when a woman called the Humane Society to report that she had found a starved dog and didn’t know what to do with it. She was forbidden from having any pets by her landlord. Without ever meeting Emma, she tugged at my heart. Something was telling me to go get her so I left to pick her up.

Before processing their application – I felt and sensed this couple was the right match for Emma. Upon approval of their application came the home trial for Emma. Needless to say, Emma never returned to her foster mom. “Where Quality and Caring are more than just words” Emma weighed only eleven pounds – you could count every vertebra and rib on her body. She was heartworm positive and in very poor health. Poor gal was in terrible shape, yet her tail never stopped wagging and the kisses never stopped. Another victim at the hands of man, starved and dumped on the streets – discarded like a bag of rubbish – shame on us! When her foster mom picked her up she fell in love with Emma. She is such a gentle loving soul. It just never ceases to amaze me how dogs are so willing to forgive and LOVE us no matter how horribly we treat them. Wow, what we can learn from the animals if we just stopped for a moment to learn. Emma was so underweight, the vet did not want to do any medical procedure until she gained some of her weight back, and until she was healthier. Her foster mom continued to nurse her back to a healthy weight. When Emma went for her heartworm treatment she was a healthy thirty-five pounds. At this time, they found her blood was infected, which meant removal of her spleen. She had a

Tank

was never taken to the vet by his owner. So when his family adopted another dog from a shelter, little Tank did not have the vaccine protection he needed and became very ill. The family did not have the money to take him to the vet, so he was surrendered over to our rescue. Tank was diagnosed with parvo and was hospitalized for over a week. He was such a little trooper through the whole ordeal. Tank is a 9 month old Shih-tzu/Chihuahua mix. He looks like a little schnauzer though!! We expect Tank to make a full recovery. Dog Poop - more than just a nuisance… You hate to see it and you hate to step in it, but, if you have a dog you need to pick it up and here are a few undisputable reasons why. Obviously there is the fact that it’s poop, I mean really, if your dog could talk, he’d probably ask you to help him out and clean up that stinky mess. Then, there’s the real health issue for you and your dog because there’s a lot of crap in that poop. What kind you ask? Let’s learn a little more….. Dog poop is a significant contributing factor to the spread of diseases, bacteria, and protozoa such as Roundworm, Tapeworm, Salmonellosis, Giardia, and E. Coli, just to name a few. Kids run the greatest risk of illness from these because they’re prone to play in the grass or dirt then put their hands in their mouths or rub their eyes. Even just unknowingly stepping in the dog poop and then walking into your home will track in

potential parasites and bacteria where it will contaminate your carpet and floors, and those who come in contact with them. Farm after her owner died unexpectedly. She is a gorgeous 14 hand mare who is very confident and lets us scratch her belly and pick up her feet. Molly was evaluated by our trainers at Cooler Horsemanship and did great in the round pen and in ground work and seems to be quite eager to please. Molly will need an adopter with enough experience to tune up her training (or willing to have a trainer work with them) but should make a nice show horse or trail horse for an intermediate rider.

Angelo is a very large (150 lbs.) Spanish Goat. He was surrendered by owners who were ignorant as to proper care of a goat and had kept him tied to a tree. Like what eventually happens to all goats tied to trees, he got tangled in the rope and had it wrapped around his neck and legs. Thankfully we were able to convince his owners to surrender him so that we could untangle him and move him to a safer environment. This handsome sweetheart hopes to find his forever home with a group of large goats or maybe a Mini Horse to graze with.

Yes pet parents, it’s that time of year again. Our children have gone back to school and the autumn leaves are falling. During the hustle and bustle of back to school time it’s very easy to forget about the other kids in the family - the fur kids. We might be into fall, but try not to fall too far behind on your pets grooming. For many breeds, regular grooming is essential for their health and well being. Missing a much needed grooming appointment can end up costing us more money in the long run. When your pets hair becomes longer than normal it becomes a breeding ground for yeast and bacteria and can easily become tangled. Undercoat that doesn’t get brushed out will also become matted, sometimes requiring the need to be shaved. If you’re unable to see your groomer, be it for financial or scheduling issues, here are some tips to keep your pooch in good shape. The most important thing that you can do for your dog is to keep them brushed thoroughly. Brushing your pet can be a good bonding experience. Use a good slicker style brush and brush a small area at a time. For a short coated breed, such as a lab, you can use a good deshedding tool instead of a brush. Examine your dog’s nails and make sure they’re not turning to the side or growing into your pets foot pads. If you see either of these things then you need to call your groomer or veterinarian and make an appointment for a nail trimming. A missed nail trim can lead to vet bills. If bathing your dog at home be sure to brush your dog thoroughly both before and after the bath and make sure to dry the dog completely. Please make sure to rinse until you see no more suds and then rinse some more. Leaving soap next to your pets skin can cause a severe skin rash that can require medical attention. With these grooming tips in mind have a happy and healthy fall season.

I am a full figure girl and have been working on my weight with a bit of a diet and exercise. I am trimming right up! But even at my ideal weight, I will be a big girl. Boomer is a handsome 7 year old male and weighs 76 lbs on a compact frame. His foster family says he is a cuddly, teddy bear of a fellow! He gets along peaceably with his foster siblings, walks easily on a leash, and loves to play fetch. He doesn’t protest being crated at night and has not had any accidents in the house. He loves to snack on carrots and a peanut butter kong will make him light up! Vance is a shorty, smooth coat Bassett Hound / JRT. He is 1 year old and weighs 18 lbs. He was rescued from the Vance, NC animal shelter where his time was up and he was due to be put to sleep. Vance is a happy dog who loves children, enjoys the dog park and playing fetch. He is very friendly and has never met a stranger. He is playful with the other Finding Great Homes for dogs in the rescue and is not a barker Jack Russell Terriers and he even rides great in the car. She is also pretty non-chalant around cats from what we have seen!! She doesn’t mind sharing her toys with adults but for some reason she is more stingy around kids, so we ask she be placed with adults or older-children families. Kiera is a cute, petite, stumpy bobtail Manx, born around Feb. 1, 2007. She arrived at TCR terrified and thin, but has blossomed into a very sweetnatured and affectionate cat, who adores being petted. When given attention, Kiera paces back and forth emitting a HUGE purr for such a little lady! She Tailless Cat Rescue also loves to curl up on a lap, and doesn’t mind sharing the lap with another cat if necessary. Kiera loves all the other cats at TCR and would like to be in a home with at least one other cat as she enjoys the company of other cats and loves to play tag with them. She’s unconcerned about dogs but would prefer a home without small children. She is vaccinated, spayed, microchipped, and FeLV/FIV negative. Brittney

came into rescue a little insecure, wanting to show us she was the boss, most likely due to being abandoned and going to a few temporary homes. English Springer Rescue America We are working on reversing that role as well as refining her social skills. A typical Springer, Brittney is 8 years old, very smart and responding nicely to basic training. She gets along well with the resident Springer and the three legged cat. She has been boarded a few times at kennel where the dogs have group exercise a few times a day. Her report card states she plays well with others! The best home for Brittney will be an adultonly home where she is the only dog. She is completely housetrained, healthy and up-to-date on all her vetting. verything Barks opened on October 15, 2010. After selling Willow Run Boarding Kennels in July 1999, they retired. This retirement went on for eleven years…and then…they got tired of being retired. This was a logical move for them as they had a gift shop in the early 80’s and a dog kennel in the 90’s. Now they can surround themselves with gifts that relate to dogs as well as humans, incorporating the best of both worlds. Their business is a unique doggy boutique, with gifts for dogs, their owners, and friends. ichard Hedgecock lives on a small farm with his wife Penny, sixty dogs, thirteen cats and five horses. His wife rescues animals and Richard appreciates the serendipity and inspiration they bring to their lives. His motto is to paint from what he lives and his shop is filled with his passion for what he loves. His work comes from the intimate knowledge of his subjects and this certainly shows in his creations. There are many wildlife artists, but Richard’s experience with animals tamed by humans and becoming dependent on them, has given him a perspective he calls “Midlife”. As a storyteller at heart, he believes the story behind the painting is more important to him than any technical quality like texture, temperature or balance.
