PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma is a natural derivative concentrated from a pet’s own platelets. Platelets are necessary for wound healing because they provide hemostasis, inflammatory modulators and a variety of growth factors—all necessary components for tissue synthesis and repair. Tips to find your
LOST PET
By Laura Michel, Burlington Animal Services By Laura Michel
A
bout twenty years ago, I took my nearly two year old son and eleven year old niece to visit a ‘handson’ museum in Miami. It was full of visitors and lots of fun, exciting exhibits for people of all ages. As we were strolling about, my worst nightmare happened. I stopped for just a moment to look at an exhibit and when I turned back, my son was out of sight. I frantically began searching and calling his name, asking staff to help, looking everywhere. After about ten terrifying minutes, I found him. He had followed some children and their grandmother to a different building with more exhibits! This incident ended well, but I never wanted to feel that terror again. Realizing you have lost your pet may
not induce quite the same level of intense fear, but it certainly comes very close. Burlington Animal Services, like most shelters in the area, takes in thousands of lost and stray animals each year. You may think your pet can’t escape the yard or get out of your house, but it only takes one time for someone to accidentally leave the door or gate open. Many times people report that a repairman left a gate open and their dog got out. Pets have been lost during traffic accidents. Fireworks and thunderstorms scare some pets enough for them to get loose and run in an effort to escape the loud noise. When the unthinkable happens, will you know what to do? The following are some suggestions to help you in the event your four-legged child should get away from you: Act fast! Immediately get out and search your neighborhood, or the area where your pet was last seen, and call your pet’s name. Ask neighbors or anyone you see if they have seen your pet. Many cats get trapped under houses or buildings, so ask your neighbors to check such places. Though not written in stone, most house cats tend to stay within a few houses of their own home, while dogs often roam farther away. Make flyers or posters with a clear picture of your pet, a full description and your phone number. The larger and brighter, the better. Do not give your name or address, and if you are offering a reward, do not give the amount to reduce calls from people with less than honorable intentions. Post flyers in your neighborhood, or where your pet went missing, as well as pet stores, veterinary offices , supermarkets, bulletin boards, gas and convenience stores, schools, etc. Give a flyer to your postal carrier, newspaper April 2014 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
Irish 12
May carrier, and FedEx or UPS delivery person. Place a lost ad in the classified section of your local newspaper’s print and online edition. These ads are usually free or cost a small amount to run for up to a week. Post a listing on Craigslist and use social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. There are Facebook pages such as www.facebook.com/LostFoundDogs.NC and www.facebook.com/LostFoundPetsOfTheTriad
that can be used to post lost and found pets. PetHarbor.com offers a Lost Pet Postcard service that will produce and mail hundreds or thousands of postcards in the area your pet is missing. Another suggestion is to take an article of your clothing that you have worn recently and place it in the location your pet was last seen. It is possible your pet will pick up the scent and come to that location, so check the spot frequently. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, check your shelter frequently! Most people never think to check the shelter. Of the 6,300 animals that came to Burlington Animal Services’ shelter in 2013, over half were stray. These pets belong to someone! In accordance with the NC General Statute 130A-192, animal shelters are required to hold a lost or stray animal for a minimum of 72 hours. So, report your missing pet with your shelter immediately, and visit or call every day or every other day. Keep in mind it is best to visit in person as there are always lots of animals in a shelter, and many do look alike. Also, check to see if your shelter posts the animals on a website. You can view all the animals in Burlington Animal Services’ Shelter and Adoption Center on our website at www.burlingtonNC.gov/pets. Since some shelters may only post some of
their animals, be sure to check with your local shelter’s policy. Just because you do not see your pet online, do not assume it is not there. Remember, don’t give up. Many pets have been lost for weeks and months before being found and reunited with their owners. These are just a few ideas to help you find your fur-child should they get lost. But there are a few things you can do now that can help greatly in the event your pet does get lost. Make sure your pet always wears a collar with a current identification tag, rabies tag or your phone number written on the collar with a permanent marker. Personalized name tags can be purchased at most pet supply stores and veterinary offices. If you have a hard time keeping a collar or tag on your pet, consider getting a microchip. Microchips cost about $45, plus
a small fee to register, and are tiny electronic capsules that are embedded under the pet’s skin. A code in the chip links the animal to its owner through a database. Furthermore, it can’t come out or get lost! Most shelters and veterinary clinics can scan animals and find the owners. Area veterinarians offer the microchip service and some animal care agencies occasionally hold microchip clinics. Keep current pictures and records to prove ownership. Should your pet end up at your local shelter, a vet’s office or at someone’s home, you need to be able to prove your pet belongs to you. Note: Be sure to keep all veterinary records and your pet’s current rabies certificate in a safe place. Your shelter will likely require proof that your pet has a current rabies vaccine and the tag is not the proof; the certificate issued by the
veterinarian, when you received the tag, is what will be required. Make certain your pet’s environment is safe by checking fences, gates, latches and doors for possible escape routes. Finally, spay and neuter your pets. Spayed or neutered animals do not have the desire to roam and search for a mate. This keeps them safe and prevents them from reproducing and adding to the pet overpopulation problem! Following these suggestions could make the difference between a happy homecoming and heartbreak. Our pets depend on us to keep them safe. They can’t carry a wallet or speak, so be prepared and make sure they always wear a collar with identification, or have them microchipped. If your pet gets lost, it can be a terrifying and scary time, but act fast and don’t give up. And, don’t forget to check your shelter!
We are looking for loving homes. Please call the Burlington Pet Adoption Center at 336-578-0343 or visit www.burlingtonnc.gov/pets for more information.

Petey is an 8 month old Pit Bull Terrier mix looking for his next big adventure. Petey loves to cuddle at night with his foster mom’s kitty. He is in love with children and will give kisses all day. Petey is house-trained, walks well on a leash, and knows most of his basic commands. Adopt him today! For information please call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n
Charlie. This handsome cat is 7 years young and he enjoys the finer things in life. He knows the importance of a nap in the sun and he enjoys a good belly rub. Charlie is fine with other animals, and he would love it if you called to meet him. He had to be returned after 7 years because his owner had surgery, however, that hasn’t bummed him out. He says he’s ready to love, again! For information call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n
Georgia.
Rihanna is an 11 month old kitty who has an affinity for sinks! She loves to drink from the faucet and will give you company any time you need to brush your teeth or wash dishes! Rihanna is extremely cuddly and affectionate. She follows her people around when they get home from work and tells them stories about her day. Rihanna is a quirky and wonderful kitty!! For information call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n
Tatum. What a sweet little girl! Tatum is 10 months old and so affectionate! She loves to cuddle and she is super playful with other animals. For information call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n
Geronimo
Is Georgia on your mind? If not, she should be! This girl is fabulous! She is 7, which means she is already housetrained and all of her puppy energy is gone. She does get occasional bursts of energy, and she loves long walks, however, her days of chewing furniture are long behind her! Georgia would love nothing more than a couch and a warm lap to snooze on. She’s the perfect lazy day companion!
is 15 months old and very special, indeed. He walks with a limp, but don’t let that bother you! It surely doesn’t bother him! He’s a playful, energetic dude, with a heart of gold. He enjoys playing with other kitties and dogs, and he does great with all people. He cannot go to a home with small children, as he has neurological issues and cannot jump out of the way of little feet! Geronimo is ready to melt your heart!

She is currently seeing patients out of Happy Tails Emergency Veterinary Clinic in Greensboro.
Why Does My Dog or Cat Lick, Chew, Scratch or Pull Hair Out??? Could It Be Allergies? Many people don’t realize that allergies are just as common in pets as they are in humans, and can cause dogs and cats quite a bit of suffering. Pet owners are also often surprised to learn that atopic dermatitis in pets is frequently caused by airborne allergens even though the symptoms show up on the skin instead of sneezing and eye discharge as seen in people with grass and tree allergies. What is Atopic Dermatitis? The basic definition of this common skin problem is a predisposition to develop allergic symptoms following exposure to substances that are usually harmless, but have triggered an allergic response. Three of the most common offenders are house dust mites, pollen and mold spores which are incredibly difficult for pets to avoid, since house dust mites and mold spores are virtually everywhere and pollen permeates the air outdoors. The most common symptoms of canine and feline atopic dermatitis include itching, excessive scratching, rubbing on the carpet, hair loss, greasy or flaky skin with a foul odor, excessive chewing on the paws and areas such as the groin and armpits. Over time, the skin that is scratched can develop hot spots - raw, inflamed areas - that may become infected. Unfortunately, once pets develop allergies they usually suffer more and more each year because their skin becomes more sensitive over time. What may start out only in the spring and fall can become a year-round problem as your pet ages and the skin becomes increasingly sensitive. Treatment Options There are a plethora of products and medications available to help and provide relief for your pet. Anti-inflammatory drugs, both topical and oral including corticosteroids (prednisone) and antihistamines, can help if the symptoms are short term and not severe. Other options include medicated shampoos or omega 3 fatty acid therapy. In severe cases where the dog’s skin is infected, antibiotics or anti-yeast medications may be needed to clear up the skin and reduce some of the symptoms. However, these products and medications treat only the symptoms and not the underlying allergies. In addition to those mentioned above, there are other medications which fall under the category immunosuppressive. Both of these medications gain control of the allergy symptoms by suppressing the immune system and preventing it from responding. If you want to
keep the symptoms from returning you need to keep your pet on the medication. Once you stop the medication the symptoms return. You may know them by the name brand Atopica or Apoquel or by the drug name cyclosporine or oclacitinib, respectively. These medications can have many side effects such as lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased or lack of appetite, skin irritation or infection and ear irritation or infection. Both medications may increase the susceptibility to infection, demodicosis (hair follicle mite) and may exacerbate cancer conditions. Treatment Option - No Drugs, Less Side Effects - Immunotherapy “Allergy shots” and Allergy Testing Allergy testing, followed by immunotherapy is proven to be one of the safest, most effective treatments for environmental allergies. Allergy testing can be done on cats, dogs and horses. It allows the dermatologist to identify which trees, weeds, grasses, molds and household items are causing the skin problems. Testing can be done by either intradermal testing (skin testing) or by blood testing. Most veterinary dermatologists prefer performing the traditional allergy test which is called intradermal testing. This is considered the gold standard for testing. It consists of injecting a tiny amount of allergen into the skin and then watching for a small reaction. If the area turns red and becomes raised it indicates a positive reaction to that allergen. In my practice we perform allergy tests for specific grasses, trees and weeds which correlate to the allergens within that geographical region. The next step is formulating the allergy serum which is not an easy task. This can be the most complex part of immunotherapy (allergy serum). Because the success of the immunotherapy (allergy serum) depends largely on the formulation, Board Certified Dermatologists draw on their years of experience and expertise to create a serum that will best suit the pet and his or her environment. The allergy serum is then used to desensitize the pet to the offending allergens. The principle behind desensitization is that the serum will “reprogram” the pet’s immune system and lessen its hypersensitivity, thus reducing or eliminating the clinical signs of atopic dermatitis. It should provide the pet with relief. There should be constant follow up to make sure the allergy serum is continuing to provide your pet with relief throughout all the seasons. It is not unusual for our clinic to adjust the formula, dose or frequency of the allergy serum based on time of year and client observations. Oral Immunotherapy (Sublingual Drops) - No More Injections!! It is now no longer necessary to give allergy serum injections. Oral immunotherapy has been proven to be just as efficacious as injections. It is much easier to administer for the owners and more readily accepted by the pet. Oral immunotherapy serum is dispensed out of a pump, right into the pet’s mouth. The allergy serum is absorbed through the mucous membrane, so it is not necessary that your pet ingest it. Typically, serum is given every day and sometimes twice daily. Doses are often just one or two pumps. When given at this frequency, we sometimes see improvement quickly. At our clinic we have had extremely good results with our oral formulations. We have seen our patients get relief from their symptoms within the first few months of treatment. We are even seeing some patients who have failed injectable immunotherapy, however, these same patients have had success with the oral form. If you would like more information or have questions about allergies, please call us at Animal Allergy and Ear Clinic at 503-574-4150. We can provide help and answer any questions you may have. I work out of Happy Tails Emergency Clinic in Greensboro one week of each month, however, you can call my office at any time. Meet Bonnie of Bonnie & Clyde! She’s a 10 lb. Dachshund Pomeranian mix born in August 2013. Bonnie and her brother were left homeless when their owner was evicted from her home. Bonnie can be a shy little girl but warms up quickly. Her heart is big and she truly loves everyone. Bonnie is spayed and up-to-date on her vaccinations. She loves other dogs but would also be fine as the only little lap dog in the house. Do you have the right home for Bonnie?
will make someone a great dog one day. Right now she is a playful, loving, puppy, just living life to the fullest. Sometimes coy and shy, Callie warms up right away and loves everyone. She and brother Thor were born to a Shepherd Beagle mix mom but never knew their dad. Callie is up-to-date on her shots and has started working on her house-training!

Millie, an adult Pointer/Hound mix (est. DOB 6/13/11), is a sweet, quiet girl. She can be a bit shy at first, but warms up to new people quickly. She had a pretty hard life before making it to HSDC – she was neglected, lived with a hoarder. Millie is spayed, up-to-date on all vaccinations, good with kids, and good with dogs. Millie has a very good, calm nature that is hard to resist, and along with her lovHumane Society of Davie County able face, how could you? This girl is a long-timer, she has been living here for almost 10 months; longer than any other dog at our Adoption Center. Please give her a second chance at life in a home! photos by Sara Handy, Picture Pawfect Photography

FERAL CAT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM 336.378.0878 / www.feralcatassistance.org
Kiwi
came into FCAP’s care when the wife of her beloved owner put her outside after the husband died. A neighbor noticed poor Kiwi, and that’s when her luck took a turn. The neighbor took care of Kiwi, cleaned up her coat, got rid of the fleas, and updated her shots. In her foster home, Kiwi loves to sit in her caregiver’s lap. She is happy and affectionate, ready to be Princess at your home. Kiwi has been spayed, vetted and microchipped. Call 378-0878 or visit www.feralcatassistance.org for details. n
Cashew
is a lap kitty whose purr can be activated by a single touch. He loves gentle belly rubs and will stand on his tiptoes to get the maximum rub when you stroke his back. At nearly 2 years old, this sweet boy loves to play and gets along with most other cats and feline-friendly dogs. Cashew has been adopted once, but one of the cats in that home just couldn’t accept him. So this beautiful boy is back at FCAP, seeking a loving home. Cashew is current on vaccinations, has been neutered, and has a microchip. Call 378-0878 or visit www.feralcatassistance.org for details. n
Chai.
If you are among those who like to talk to their pets, you might want to speak with Chai. He is happy to strike up a conversation. His main topic of conversation is himself! He will tell you what he wants and will tell you again if you don’t respond. Although Chai doesn’t like to be picked up, he enjoys snuggle time with his humans. He would prefer a home with older children and adults. An intelligent cat at 2 years old, Chai likes to outsmart toys designed to challenge feline minds. He is up-to-date on vaccinations, has a microchip, and has been neutered. Call 378-0878 or visit www.feralcatassistance.org for details. n
Sage.
This handsome, long-haired tuxedo is about 3 years old, so he has experienced a bit of life. He is not easily startled and has a calm demeanor. Sage knows what he’s looking for in a new home. Though he is not a lap cat, Sage likes to follow his people around, much like a dog would. And if you’ve seen him at PetSmart, you know that he is the size of a small dog! Sage really loves his scratching post and is fond of his plush leopard-spotted bed. He is up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped and neutered. Call 378-0878 or visit www.feralcatassistance.org for information. n
Jangles is one of several tuxedo cats currently available through FCAP. Like most tuxedos, Jangles is a friendly boy who seeks human contact. Tuxedo cats have a following among cat lovers. Some of the popular names for this type of cat include: Oreo, Panda, Zebra, Yinyang, Ritz, Boots, C.C. (Coffee & Cream), Eight Ball, Half & Half, Gala, and Moomoo. Jangles and his feline friends don’t mind if you change their names. Next time you are at PetSmart on Bridford Parkway in Greensboro, come say hello to Jangles. He is current on vaccinations, microchipped and neutered.
with some feral cats. But she is anything but feral. Kelsey loves to snuggle and spend time with humans. She is good with gentle children and enjoys being petted. Kelsey is 2 years old and is a sister of Chai. She is up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, and spayed.

Come see if you can help him remember the rest (or just make up something so he will quit grinning).

Training Your Pet
Tie a Yellow Ribbon by Jan Wilson, CPDT-KA Dog-Gone Fun
T
here is a great nonprofit program that is becoming popular. It is called The Yellow Dog Project. The project was founded in 2012 by a trainer in Alberta, Canada. The Yellow Dog Project was created to educate and raise public awareness that all dogs cannot be greeted by strangers. Some dogs are nervous with strangers in a close proximity and are uncomfortable being touched. These dogs are sometimes referred to as DINOS (Dogs in need of space). The program promotes placing a yellow ribbon on the dog’s collar or leash as a symbol to potential greeters. Their website, www.theyellowdogproject.com, also sells items such as yellow leashes and t-shirts promoting the cause. This dog is either in training or has special needs… please give him some space. There are also other reasons why a dog may wear a yellow ribbon. Some examples are: 1) The dog is recovering from a surgery and is overly sensitive. 2) Rescue dogs with fear issues 3) Dogs that are over exuberant and are learning self-control with strangers 4) Service dogs The yellow ribbon is not, however, a license to walk an aggressive dog. A dog with aggressive issues should not be walked in a public place exposing the public to a potentially dangerous situation. A yellow ribbon does not excuse a dog owner from training their dog and is definitely not a waiver of liability. Do not think of the ribbon as a negative label. An owner who owns a “yellow dog” who would benefit from a yellow ribbon, should place one on his dog. It does not label the dog as a “bad dog” but communicates your dog’s need for space. It can be embarrassing to continually ask dog lovers to not pet your dog,
40
April 2014 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
especially when your dog has an extra cuddly, friendly look. With your dog sporting a yellow ribbon, it can be an opportunity to educate a well-meaning person and to protect your dog’s space. The Yellow Dog Project also strives to raise public awareness about the proper way to greet a strange dog. Their website and social media pages such as Facebook provide great links to educational training sites and resources. They emphasize educating children to ask permission before approaching and petting ANY dog, and the proper way to approach and greet. To make the project successful, it is essential to spread the word! If you have a dog that would benefit from a yellow ribbon, place one on his leash. Even if you don’t have a dog with a yellow ribbon, you can help those that do by mentioning it to friends. Social media is a great way to get an idea out quickly. You can add The Yellow Dog Project to your “like” list. I am implementing the yellow ribbon program within my training classes and daycare in hope it spreads throughout the Triad area.

Run for the Penguins
What’s Black and White and Runs All Over? by Anita Greenland Communications and PR Coordinator Greensboro Science Center
G
ive up? The answer is African penguins and their supporters participating in the Tuxedo Trot, of course! If you have seen the African penguins on exhibit at the Greensboro Science Center at feeding time, you will see some penguins run. Well, not really running, but waddling very quickly with much determination. Now is your chance to not only see these cute black and white birds run, but you can also run to help save the penguins. Due to disruption of their breeding grounds, oil spills and loss of food supply, the African penguin population has declined drastically (69% in the past 10 years) and there is an urgent need for funding for research and to implement protective measures. The Greensboro Science Center is home to 14 African penguins. Their charming personalities and playful mannerisms have made them a crowd favorite of visitors. To raise money for this beloved endangered species, the Greensboro Science Center Conservation Committee is hosting the Tuxedo Trot: Run for the Penguins 5K and Kids’ Fun Run to be held on Saturday, April 26, 2014. 100% of the race proceeds will be donated to the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB). They are a leading marine non-profit organization with a mission to conserve seabirds and other sea-life, especially the endangered African penguin species. The 5K takes runners along a beautiful two loop course on Lawndale Drive (closed to traffic) and through the gently rolling hills of Country Park. The course is very spectator friendly. The Kids’ Fun Run is a short course through Animal Discovery Zoo which includes “Waddle Zones” and other fun diversions for kids

under the age of 10. Runners, walkers and waddlers are encouraged to wear black and white. Along with creating a wonderful family memory and benefitting a great cause, race participants will receive a customized race t-shirt, a plush penguin, free admission to the Greensboro Science Center the day of the race and the opportunity to win other great raffle prizes like penguin encounters, penguin paintings and much more. No athletic event would be complete without a cute mascot, so the Greensboro Science Center has chosen one of its very own African penguins to represent the race. Her name is Tux. Tux was hatched at New England Aquarium in Boston on June 1, 2011. She was moved to the Greensboro Science Center on June 1, 2013 and is currently on exhibit in the Carolina SciQuarium. She is recognizable by her unique features. Whereas most African Penguins have solid markings on their faces, she has “waves” around her eyes. She can also be identified by the armband with her name on it. If you would like to participate in the Tuxedo Trot: Run for the Penguins on April 26, 2014 or learn more about the event or the SANCCOB organization benefitting from the proceeds, go to www.tuxedotrot.com. You will also find some great, must-see training tip videos by Tux on the website.

energetic Golden mix weighing about 44 lbs. He is very sweet and easily takes treats, making him easy to train. He is already learning basic commands and how to walk well on a leash. He loves people, being talked to, being petted and likes to be close to his humans. He would love a Triad Golden Retriever Rescue home with another active dog, but not cats. He will need a fence because he loves to run. An active person or family would be the perfect home for Mike.

SAY GOODNIGHT GRACIE
by James Colasanti Jr.
I let her sleep on one of the pillows at the head of the bed and every night, just before lights out, I would say to her, “Say goodnight, Gracie,”…
small mother dog who needs a home. We will find a home for her pups. But as you know, adult dogs are a lot harder to place. And to be honest she is very skittish so she needs someone who will give her a lot of love and attention.” If the word “no” is in my vocabulary, I don’t know it or know how to use it. And I certainly couldn’t say it when a homeless animal was involved.

A psychic named Lady Wonder once told me, “The number of dogs you will have will never end.” She was telling this to the person sitting across from her who at the time had four cats and no dogs. She then said, “You will leave your job working with people (which at the time was with a major insurance company) and begin a job working with animals.” At that particular time in my life I had no plans and no desire whatsoever to change jobs. Lady Wonder continued by saying, “You will develop an understanding of animals that most people do not and will not ever have.” I thought to myself, “Well, that was fifteen dollars down the drain.” A week later a co-worker gave us a pregnant dog who was in desperate need of a home. We named her Lady, after Lady Wonder, and she was part of the family for sixteen years. Two weeks later I quit my job at the insurance company and became a vet tech with the Pleasant Garden Animal Hospital. And the rest, as they say, is history. It was an early February morning and I was sitting in the den drinking coffee when the phone rang. On the line was my friend Sharon, who was and still is, the Executive Director of the Animal Rescue and Foster Program, a no-kill organization that rescues stray animals and places them in responsible homes. I say responsible because they believe in having a fenced backyard for dogs, and cats must be kept indoors. She began by saying, “I know you of all people do not need any additional family members, but we have this very cute, very
artist - Laurie Russell I named her Gracie because she looked like a Gracie. She never really liked being picked up and held or even petted. She would let us do it, but you could see in her eyes she never really liked it. I let her sleep on one of the pillows at the head of the bed and every night, just before lights out, I would say to her, “Say goodnight, Gracie,” and she would yodel letting me know that everything was okay. It was her way of saying, “Thank you.” In her eighteen years with us it was a nightly occurrence. The bedroom is silent now, but her pillow with her indentation remains at the head of the bed. And every night, just before retiring, when all of the dogs have situated themselves around the bed, I look at them and I speak the nightly words, “Say goodnight, Gracie.”

I’m not a believer in “fixing” your dog’s behavior, then bringing the end result back to you. Showing owners how to install the behavior cues, and how the training is done right from the start gives them the power to deal with future problems and turns my clients into dog trainers in their own right!
