Rabies—What You Need To Know!
Rabies is a deadly viral disease which attacks the central nervous system of warm-blooded animals and causes acute inflammation of the brain. Early intervention after exposure can effectively prevent the disease, but once symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal. The rabies virus is transmitted in the saliva of an infected animal, typically into a bite wound. On rare occasions, rabies has been transmitted by other routes such as contamination of mucous membranes or aerosol transmission. The incubation period is typically between 1-3 months, but can range from less than a week to greater than one year. The World Health Organization reports that rabies is present in over 100 countries and the virus is responsible for an estimated 50,000 human deaths annually. The majority of these cases occur in Africa and Asia, and exposure is typically due to rabid dogs. Due to strenuous vaccination protocols of our pets, and successful post exposure treatments, the United States only sees around one to three deaths per year, although, an estimated 39,000 people receive post exposure treatments annually. In North Carolina, rabies is found most commonly in raccoons, skunks, red and grey foxes, coyotes, wolves, ground hogs and beavers. Bats are also a significant source of rabies, and although only a small percentage actually carry the virus, they represent the most common route of exposure to people in the United States.
The rules and regulations for dealing with rabies are strict, and that is because there is NO way to test for rabies in a live animal! Since this disease is fatal, laws are in place to protect people’s safety. • North Carolina Law requires that any owner of a dog, cat, or ferret shall have their animal vaccinated by four months of age, and keep the animal currently vaccinated against rabies. There are no legal exemptions to rabies vaccination of pets in the N.C. General Statutes. Rabies antibody testing (titers) are not to be used in place of current vaccination. • If your pet is potentially exposed to rabies and is current on rabies vaccination, the animal should be immediately revaccinated for rabies within five days of exposure. It is advised that the animal remain under the owner’s control and be carefully observed for potential clinical signs for 45 days. • If a pet’s vaccination coverage has lapsed, or the animal has never been vaccinated, and has been exposed to potential rabies, the local health director has the authority to require the owner to euthanize the animal, or place the animal (at the owner’s expense) in quarantine up to six months at a designated facility. • If you are bitten or scratched by any animal, clean the wound immediately with soap and water for 15 minutes and call your doctor. Do not attempt capture of an animal yourself. Call Animal Control immediately. If the animal is a dog,
cat, or ferret, it can be placed in a 10 day confinement in a designated facility to monitor for development of clinical signs of rabies. If signs of rabies develop, the animal will be humanely euthanized and submitted for testing. • For people with confirmed exposure to rabies, there is a rabies post exposure vaccination protocol. It consists of a dose of human immune globulin and four doses of rabies vaccine This set of vaccinations is highly effective at preventing rabies if given as soon as possible following an exposure. Common sense is the key to safety and prevention. Keep all family pets up to date on their rabies vaccinations. Limit your exposure to stray animals and wildlife, and counsel children on the dangers of handling these animals. Wear protective gloves when handling dead or sick wildlife. Avoid any contact with bats. If you have any questions on handling a situation, don’t hesitate to contact your physician, veterinarian, Animal Control, or your local health department for help.

Cover Story
WHO RESCUES WHO? By Dara Lamberson Loving Pet Inn Adoptions
E
ven though we know we can’t save them all, as an animal rescuer, the desire to do so is very strong. As the calls and emails come in decisions must be made, tough decisions of who we can take into our program and who we must turn away. These choices are not easy to make but are a reality of the rescue world. A non-breed specific rescue must keep a variety of sizes, colors and breeds of dogs and cats in order to keep adoption numbers up. There are some that come along and we feel so sorry for them that we take them in knowing that they will most likely live out their life here with us. Myrtle was one like that. She was huddled in a cold corner in a high kill shelter when I first saw her. I “pulled” her from there with the intention of just giving her some comfort in her last
days. She appeared From Chalupa’s (now Choopi) Family: “I have known the joy to be so old and frail of raising a puppy into adulthood and seeing them develop that hospice care was their own personality. But now I know the special joy of all I thought we could adopting an older dog who has had a rough life and just offer her. Boy was I wants to be loved and experience some comfort and security.” wrong…with some TLC Myrtle came out of her shell and became a favorite of all know”, she said. Her listing wasn’t on who met her. Her tough little spirit was such petfinder long before an inquiry came an inspiration. She was with us for three in on her. Chalupa was adopted and is years and was the ruler of the kitchen/break now Choopi. room where she lived in comfort perched Here is a little of what her new family has on her big fluffy bed. So when the next old, to say about her: decrepit Chihuahua came along I assumed “I had not planned on adopting another her fate would be the same…wrong again! dog. We already had 4 rescues! But my Chalupa came to us as an owner surrender. wife saw a dog rescue web page about Skinny, arthritic and grouchy, this little girl a Chihuahua and sent the link to me. had obviously seen some hard times. consider adopting her. Maybe it’s just the sap in me when it comes to animals, but I began thinking that my wife and I could give this poor little dog a good home. To have her know that life can be good, and that it doesn’t need to be filled with pain, unkindness and loneliness. The more I thought about it, the more the urge grew to adopt this older dog. When I first met her she was weak, afraid of being picked up and her arthritis was so bad it seemed as if she could not run, jump or go up steps. When this pitiful but sweet dog looked into my eyes, I thought I saw a determination in her to not let her condition or her past forever chain her to being miserable. It was as if she was letting me know that she just wanted a chance to be loved and to know some comfort in life. It was as if she was silently pleading “don’t give up on me. I still have something to give.” As I write this, we have had her for a little more than a month, and she has already given me more joy and pleasure than I could have hoped for. Seeing her transform into a dog who is no longer afraid to be picked up and who now occasionally runs, jumps and scampers up steps and truly seems to be happy and content has extinguished any concern about adding another dog! I have known the joy of raising a puppy into adulthood and seeing them develop their own personality. But now I know the special joy of adopting an older dog who has had a rough life and just wants to be loved and experience some comfort and security. I don’t know how long she will live. It may be only six months or it might be six years. But I do know that however long she has, we will do what we can to give her a happy and comfortable life. And I do know that each day she is with us, she will give back to us her love and her appreciation for what she now has.” The dogs that come into rescue often have medical issues due to neglect or abuse. Bobo came to us in pretty bad shape. Skin allergies that had not been addressed had caused years of constant scratching. His skin was red, scabby and he had many bald patches. He seemed to be an anxious, restless dog, probably due to years of being so uncomfortable. When an inquiry came in for him and a meeting was arranged, we prayed that they would see past
“Bobo brought so much joy to her (my mom) even in the final days. He would lay in bed with her and snuggle like only Bobo can do.” his “issues” and see the potential of what he could become. Here is an excerpt from a letter we received from his “mom”: “I was so adamant about not getting another dog after our dog lost his battle with cancer 15 years ago. Right after we adopted Bobo in May, I found myself wondering why I had changed my mind and wanted this little guy so much. I just assumed it was his unconditional snuggling love that made him a perfect fit for us. It wasn’t until just recently that I realized I was going to need him to help get me through the struggles that were ahead of me. On February 3rd my mom lost her health battle and moved to her new home in heaven. Bobo brought so much joy to her even in the final days. He would lay in bed with her and snuggle like only Bobo can do. After losing her that Tuesday morning, he has been what has kept me going. He’s always ready to give kisses and lets me squeeze him as much as I want… whenever I want. I’m not sure what I would do without him in my life right now. He has given me the joy and love that I’ve needed over the last few weeks and I can’t imagine our family without him. What a blessing he has been!” More stories…”My husband and I adopted Lilah in 2011. Two weeks after we welcomed her into our home, my husband
was diagnosed with stage four cancer. He and Lilah were buddies. She was our best medicine during his illness and now she is my best friend. I don’t know what I would do without her.” And more…“I adopted Lexi in June and she is the absolute love of my life. I not only rescued her, but she definitely rescued me. Being a relatively new widow with no family within 700 miles, she is such a dear companion that has filled a huge void in my life…I couldn’t possibly imagine life without her.” I could go on and on with stories of the joy these dogs and cats have brought into the lives of the people who adopt them. So, as I look at the days ahead, I know there will be choices to make…who to take and who to turn away. We will work as hard as we can to be able to take in as many as possible and we know that a difference will be made for them and the people who adopt them.

Beau
is a DSH brown tabby kitten with white highlights. He was abandoned at the AARF House with two other kittens. As you can see in his pictures, he has a scar on his left cornea -the result of an untreated eye infection when he was a tiny kitten. Although somewhat distracting, the scar will not affect his health or quality of life and may resolve over time. He’s very social and friendly, will nap in your lap and loves other cats and people, too. Vet’s Corner Lynne Catania, DVM Forsyth Mobile and Relief Veterinary Services Dr. Lynne Catania received her degree from Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. She is a fully mobile, progressive, experienced mixed animal veterinarian providing mobile veterinary care to horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, alpacas, dogs and cats in the Winston-Salem area since June of 2013. With 13+ years in veterinary practice, she was raised in Western NY on a Registered Jersey Cattle Farm that showed nationwide. She was in mixed animal practice for 7.5 years in NW PA prior to going on her own in relief and large animal practice, in PA/NY. She moved to Winston Salem in 2011 with her husband and three children, and repeated her model from NW PA, offering relief veterinary services to the community. Currently, she serves several veterinary hospitals in the Triad, and also offers her services at the Central Spay, Neuter and Wellness Clinic in Kernersville in an effort to help control the pet population. It was her passion and desire to cultivate meaningful client relationships and her need to work directly with her own clients and patients that brought about the start of Forsyth Mobile and Relief Veterinary Services in June of 2013.
Benefits of “At Home” Veterinary Care “At Home” Veterinary Care seems to be a phenomenon that is catching on across the country. When I started my mobile mixed animal veterinary service in June of 2013, it was on the hunch that pet / animal owners would be excited about the utility. So far, my hunch has been correct! In my travels recently to CA, I noticed a large number of “mobile vets” especially in the small animal realm, on the road. It seems that this is a growing business model nationwide. I am quickly learning why! Pet owners love the service for many reasons. I have tried to itemize some of them here. My personal background is in both small AND large animal medicine. While it is my calling to serve dogs and cats, it is due to my love for hooved animals (cattle, horses, llamas, alpacas, goats, sheep and the occasional pot-bellied pig), that I felt a mobile “mixed animal” practice would be a novel idea. So, for farm animal owners, YES - I will see your dogs on a farm call, too! But, for the nature of simplicity and this magazine, this article is written in regards to house pets. Pets tend to feel “safe” when within their own environment and they truly tend to be more at ease to handling. There are not as many “foreign smells” within the home of the pet that would get them alarmed. This often allows the veterinarian to do things, with the owner present, that may not be remotely possible in a veterinary office without sedation or even the need for general anesthesia. Pets that succumb to car sickness, have immense anxiety from a car ride or setting foot into a traditional veterinary hospital, are prime
candidates for “at home” veterinary care. Those extra-large patients or those that are less mobile from arthritis can also benefit tremendously! Many owners find that if they have several pets requiring preventive care (vaccinations, etc.), it is much more convenient to have them all examined / attended to at once, in the home. This would save them time and would avoid the need to make several trips to the veterinary hospital with a few pets at a time. Oftentimes, this can also be a more costeffective deal, as you pay for one house call. Also, having your veterinarian come to you lowers the risk your pet will be exposed to diseases that could be lurking in a clinic waiting room from sick pets. This is a tremendous advantage if your pet is very young, elderly or has a weakened immune system. For the pet owner alone, at home veterinary care may be a huge blessing for people with hectic or unpredictable schedules, for couples with a new baby or young children at home and for shut-ins, senior citizens, and people who don’t drive. Owners who are facing the death of a beloved companion may prefer to have their pet euthanized at home, surrounded by family members. This is a very hard time for all, and can be a very loving and comforting thing to offer a pet that has been so special in their family’s life. Many services that can be offered in a traditional veterinary hospital can be offered or obtained in the home. Preventive care, exams, lab samples, and medical services that tend to be the most common can be offered, without compromising the standard of care. This is especially true for most preventive care, such as vaccinations, flea / heartworm and monitoring of many common conditions such as controlled diabetes, thyroid disease and most skin conditions. Services may vary depending on the equipment that the particular mobile vet has access to. This may seem like a wonderful thing all the way around, however, there are some disadvantages to mobile veterinary services. Service limitation may be a concern sometimes with “at home” veterinary services. When there is severe injury, radiographs, ultrasound, other advanced diagnostics, or the need for advanced surgical care / alteration - referral or transfer to a traditional veterinary hospital or even a specialty referral hospital may be necessary. So, if your pet is very ill or requires a specialist, a mobile unit probably isn’t the way to go. Mobile clinics are also not typically equipped to handle emergencies. This will vary from one mobile service to another though. For this reason, it is recommended you call first to see what services are available from the mobile vet that you choose. Appointment scheduling may sometimes be an issue. Due to travel, set-up time and other peculiarities of operating a mobile vet clinic, these vets-on-wheels are able to see far fewer patients each day than their counterparts in regular practice. You could run into a situation where appointments are booked far in advance or on a time table that may or may not work with your needs or the needs of your pet. Mobile veterinary services can be more expensive than the same services at traditional veterinary clinics. Travel to and from appointments carries its own expense, and each mobile call takes considerably longer than regular clinic visits. Mobile vets generally have no choice but to charge higher fees for the convenience of bringing their clinic to their patients rather than the other way around. However, this may vary from one service to another, depending on what services they offer and it’s recommended that you do your homework and evaluate what type of care would work out best for you and your pet. Weigh the pros and cons, and if you decide that at home veterinary care is for you and your pets, call Forsyth Mobile and Relief Veterinary Services at 336-734-9387. Please see our ad on page 19 for more information.

Hannah and Milo will purr and beg for pats on the head and are learning to get along with other cats and cat-friendly dogs. Both Milo and Hannah are litter-trained and very affectionate. We would very much like for Hannah and Milo to be adopted together as they are a bonded pair who have been through a lot. For information call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n

We believe the last weeks, days, and moments that an owner has with a pet are the most cherished times, and should be handled with dignity and love. By providing veterinary hospice and pet euthanasia services in the home, the human-animal bond is less disturbed, making a much more peaceful closing to a shared bond.

ANIMAL RESCUE & FOSTER PROGRAM 336.574.9600 / www.arfpnc.com
Ava. Rescued in January 2015,
Maverick.
malnourished and pregnant, Ava is always willing to show unconditional love to anyone that would shower her with kindness. Born March 2014, Ava was a terrific mom to 6 beautiful baby pups - however, she is so glad to be living the carefree life that a 1 year old dog should be living now that her puppies have been weaned and are in other ARFP foster homes. Part Pointer, part Brittany Spaniel, Ava loves life and loves attention. Ava thinks she is meant to be a lap dog, always yearning to be cuddled up on her favorite person. Ava has found a new love for toys - always carrying one around the house. Cratetrained, house-trained and pretty much perfect...that’s our girl Ava.
Meet our western guy Maverick! Maverick is one of Ava’s pups, born on January 14th. We know he is part Ava (Brittany Spaniel mix) but whatever daddy was we have no clue. Our thinking is that he will be slightly larger than Ava. Maverick is a charmer and loves people. He is crate-trained and potty-training is coming along, slowly but surely for this sweet boy - you know how boys are:-). Maverick loves to play and is good at occupying himself if he needs to. Drop by and meet Maverick anytime!

Mandy, Mandy, Mandy how beautiful
Dean, Dean, he’s our man! Foster parents went to Carolina so we’re guessing we know who Dean was named after! Dean was born Christmas Eve 2014 to a mom that appears to be a Whippet/ Black Lab mix. His sissy is black and his other brother was blonde. Dean is an entertaining kind of guy who likes to play. He’ll play with other puppies or people, he’s not picky. Dean is crate-trained and he is working on potty-training. He is up-to-date on his shots and will soon be neutered. We’re pretty positive that he’ll make a good addition to any home!
you are! Silly too! Born mid August, this little girl has a spirit that is full of sugar and spice. Mandy enjoys playing with her stuffed mouse, rolling around and wrestling with her brother, and spending time with her foster family. Up-to-date on her shots and feluk-negative, Mandy is searching high and low for a family to call her own. Do you have room in your home for a fun-loving kitten? Mandy will pack up her bags and head right over if you are ready.

Charlotte
loves, loves, loves, life! Her goal is to please. She is approximately one year of age, spayed, up-to-date on shots, and heartworm negative. Billie Joe is named after the lead singer in the punk rock band Green Day but she says she’s no punk, she’s a lover! She is also house-trained, cratetrained and “plays well with others”. She was found wandering a busy street which is so unsafe for her as we have discovered that she is hearing impaired. Can you help find Billie Joe her forever home? Billie Joe is currently interviewing potential forevers.
was a Christmas Eve baby born to a homeless Whippet/Lab mix. Fortunately for the whole family a kind person took them in and allowed mom to raise her babies. Now Charlotte, along with brother Dean, are in ARFP and living the good life in a foster home. Charlotte is a sweet girl with personality plus. She is a team player and loves playing with the other puppies. Charlotte is crate-trained and she says potty-training is coming along nicely. Would you like a Charlotte in your home?

RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK www.reddogfarm.com For a current list of upcoming events please visit our website at www.reddogfarm.com.
Clover was found walking down Summit Avenue in Greensboro just before a big snowstorm was about to hit. When we took her to the veterinarian for her initial exam, they estimated her to be 8 months old, weighing only 27 pounds. She had to eat tiny meals throughout the day as her stomach could not tolerate much more than a handful at once. She is eating great now and gaining weight. Clover’s foster family reports that she gets along great with their three senior dogs, their rambunctious kitten and their toddler. She wags her whole back end when people talk to her, has never met a stranger and is so eager to please. She sleeps in her crate at night and follows the family routine during the day. If you are looking for a sweet, cuddly addition, please visit www.reddogfarm.com to fill out an adoption application! n
Meet Elvira. She is a two year old potbellied pig who lost her original home when her owners went through a divorce. She is now in a foster home and shares her field with another pig and several goats and chickens. Her foster dad reports that she is a friendly, happy girl and gets along well with all of her pasture mates. You can apply to adopt Elvira and see all of our other adoptable animals at www.reddogfarm.com! n
Hannah
Choctaw & Apollo
came to us as stallions but have now been gelded. Choctaw is very quiet and shy (though he loves a treat and a scratch once he thinks about it) whereas Apollo expects and demands attention from anyone nearby. We are still getting to know these boys but please watch our website for updates or to fill out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n
Limon & Cello are two
is a very sweet Guinea pig but a little on the shy side. Her foster mom is working with her. She enjoys being held once she settles in and gets to know you better. She loves lettuce and the occasional treat. Hannah is a fairly quiet girl. We just brought her into the program and are still getting to know her personality. If you are interested in adopting Hannah please fill out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n
Batman
parakeets that were surrendered to Red Dog Farm. Both of them are very chatty and like to listen to the radio. Like most parakeets they prefer to be together and don’t require much “human” interaction. They do enjoy their toys and are very happy to entertain you while you work or watch TV.
seems to like company and spends much of the day following his foster family from room to room. He makes himself a little bed out of the softest shirt/pillow/blanket in the room and then lays there until someone calls him over for a cuddle. He is very affectionate and will come running over to soak up any love you have to offer. Batman has a very calm disposition and is great with the human children in his home. He likes to play a little but would much rather lay around, look out a window, or cuddle with the 9 month old child.
If you are interested in adopting Limon & Cello, please complete an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

K9 Police Teams
REWARDING THEIR SERVICE The K9 Teams of the Kernersville Police Department By Clint Queen
K
ernersville Police Dogs have been protecting the lives of the public and their fellow officers since 2009. Since then, Police Dogs have played an important and vital role in locating criminals, finding evidence and ultimately protecting and serving the Kernersville community. Police Dogs, like their handlers, will at some point have to retire, whether this is due to reaching their retirement age or as a result of an illness or injury sustained while protecting our communities. These police dogs will retire to their handlers as a family pet. Once a dog has retired from active Police Dog duty, their care and ongoing treatment becomes the sole responsibility of their handler. Families who take on Retired Police Dogs receive no financial assistance. It is not, at present, possible to insure these courageous dogs and, therefore, the cost of such care and treatment can soon mount up. The Retired Kernersville Police Dog Fund was created to financially assist handlers with their retired Police Dogs. The fund helps to cover the cost of major or ongoing treatment and care of retired Kernersville Police Dogs, not the annual veterinary check-up bills. The fund also covers expenses incurred for all retired police dogs when they visit the vet for the final time to be put down, as well as cremation costs. During their career, which lasts, on average, eight to ten years, these courageous Police Dogs often suffer knee, leg and back problems while performing their community duties. Although they are treated and cared for at the time, these injuries can very often shorten their life span and usually require further ongoing medical attention long after they retire. Police dogs are often compared to football players, they get all the best care when they’re working, but oftentimes the wear-and-tear on the job doesn’t show itself until after the dogs are retired ... handlers just can’t afford to put all that money into their dog. The Retired Kernersville Police Dog Fund aims to ensure that all retired Kernersville Police dogs enjoy the retirement they deserve, with the highest levels of ongoing medical care and treatment. Hopefully, any heart wrenching decisions about the dog’s future will not come down purely to the financial considerations. All of our support and assistance to these fine retired Police Dogs comes via donations from our community, from those that recognize the fantastic service our loyal Police Dogs gave to our town. Any donation, whether it’s financial or another means, is very much appreciated and welcomed, we are doing it for the dogs.
Meet Our Six K9 Teams The Kernersville Police Department currently employs six K9 teams. Officer C.M. Queen and K9 Nitro have been together since 2009. Nitro is a seven year old Belgian Malinois that was born in the

Czech Republic. Nitro came to the U.S. in 2008 and was trained at Southern Police Canine in Spring Hope, NC. He is a full-service patrol dog and is trained to locate narcotics, track suspects, locate evidence, and apprehend fugitives. During his career, Nitro has seized $3,515,184 in illegal narcotics, and $342,420 in Officer C.M. Queen and K9 Nitro cash from narcotics dealers. Nitro has been involved in over 250 criminal arrests. K-9 Kimber is a Fox Red Labrador and was chosen from Green Collar K9 in July of 2011 at the young age of 18 months. Officer Marion and Kimber trained for approximately six months before the two certified as a team in November 2011. Kimber was successful on her first outing and was able to locate 26 kilos of cocaine and $975,000 in cash. Kimber has continued to be successful as she and Officer Marion have located $1,511,770 in bulk Officer Marion and K9 Kimber currency, $1,597,373 in narcotics and $3,300 in stolen items. Officer Marion and Kimber certified in Articles and Tracking along with Narcotics in 2014. Training Your Pet
How to Help Our Dogs Be Better Family Pets by Marcia Martin, Marcia’s Best Dogs
P
eople call us dog trainers. I’ve always wondered why. We’re expected to be good at reading dogs, but we must also be good at reading people who say their heart is ready to love one of these dogs. It’s a two-way puzzle that has to fit just the right way. That’s why we, the dog trainers, never give up the work we do and the hopefulness we carry. My goal is to make sure that new dog owners fully comprehend what kind of dog they have chosen, and the best approach to training that dog, using methods the dog will learn easily and accept in consistent interaction with their “leader”. Pet owners have unrealistic expectations that dogs can understand when we speak to them. Sorry to disappoint you, but we cannot reason with a dog. I teach people to respect each dog’s individuality. Your dog is unique. Your situation, your household and your schedule is unique, and the dog has to adjust to all of that. We want them to be perfect, but we ourselves are far from it. We make mistakes every day and wonder why the dog is not abiding by the rules. We give puppies too much freedom and then question why they are not housebroken. When there is more than one dog in a household, we confuse the pecking order and may spoil the new dog, forgetting about the old one. Giving the pups lots of love and hugs does not make them listen to our wishes. Leadership does. We tend to “feel” more than “think.” But the reality of dog training can be confusing and in conflict with an owner’s expectations. First, do some research about what it takes to be a pet owner. Analyze the breed of dog that you’re considering and compare it to your current lifestyle. Your dog will be your companion pet for the next 10 to 15 years and your decision on this should be a smart one, not just emotional. You want your dog to adjust to whatever life throws at you. Give him or her the skills to weather any storm; to remain at your side for life. Socialize your dog with new people, places, dogs and kids. You can have a demanding life with a dog, where there are accidents all the time, incessant barking, annoying play biting, having constant dog fights between dogs. Or you can choose to have a professional dog trainer and learn how to train your dog and have a wonderful and peaceful life with a well-behaved pet. Dog training is beyond all the basic commands.

April 2015 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
Expect that having a dog in your life will be time consuming. It’s a lot of work, if you want to do it right. Some clients ask me: “How often do I train my dog, 3 times a day?” My answer is: “You train your dog every day and every time you interact with them.” Dogs are consistently learning from the reaction of their owners, anticipating their owner’s behavior. In other words, dogs are always in training. My last recommendation is a critical one: teach your children to respect your dog and to consider its feelings and well being. Too often I have seen parents overlook this and it can result in a pet being abused or sadly, a pet striking back and hurting your kid, which most of the times I question if it is the dog’s fault. Manners go both ways, we teach our dogs to respect our kids but we also should teach our kids to respect the family pet. It’s my opinion that every school should offer pet parenting classes, teaching our kids to behave well in a home with animals and to treat their pets with loving care and respect. This is a great foundation for their future. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association there are some 70 million pet dogs in the United States. There is concern that certain breeds among those dogs are not safe for children and should be banned because they are dangerous. It is my opinion, however, that the danger is in not teaching our children how to be safe around our own pets. I am devoted to the work I do. Because to me it’s not really work, it’s my passion. When I can help create a place of peace for an animal and its caretaker, it becomes a sanctuary for both.

Tiki. To say that Tiki is a cool cat does not do her “purrsonality” justice! Tiki loves to love on people and animals (cats/dogs) and loves to cuddle! We estimate Tiki to have been born sometime in July 2013. She has very subtle tortie markings against her beautiful grey fur.
Jasper was not dead! He was close, but had not totally given up. Our awesome volunteers rushed him in for medical care and found that he was completely riddled with shot after being on the receiving end of a shotgun blast. It’s a miracle that he survived for so long. Aside from the horrible shooting discovery, they also found that he was covered in ticks, emaciated, and loaded with intestinal parasites. We are happy to report that he is all fixed up now and thriving in foster care. According to his foster mom he The Fort Rescue loves sitting in the sunshine and playing with his foster brothers. He is learning to fetch and to sit on command. Jasper is good with kids, cats and other dogs. He is about 1-1/2 years old, up-todate on vaccines, neutered and microchipped. Sweet senior (10 years old) Merle came to us in very bad shape (kidney stones, hernia, UTI). He does require a special dog food to prevent future stones but he is otherwise healthy and ready to start living! He likes dogs, people, playing tug-o-war, going for walks and car rides. He’s an affectionate and loving fellow who enjoys playtime as much as the couch. Nearly housebroken too!

Tank was picked up as a stray by a nice cat rescue lady. She called GSRA to see if we could help and here he is! It seems he might have been an outside dog who was never fully socialized. Tank is around 2-3 years old and with proper introductions, is good with dogs, cats, adults and older children. He is cratetrained and house-trained, but still a little pully on leash. Tank is a sweet, playful boy who loves squeaky toys and being with his people. Even though this guy is rough around the edges, he is smart and with some obedience classes and a strong leader will make a great companion.

Sadie’s DOB is 10/24/14 so that will make her 4 months old on 2/22/15. She survived the Parvo treatment, is up-to-date on her shots, spayed and microchipped. She is an adorable little short-legged puppy that loves to run and jump and play. She also enjoys playing with the other fosters and loves attention. She is all puppy and is learning to go potty on newspapers.
Chihuahua Rescue
If you would like to give Sadie a forever home, please go online to: chihuahua-rescue.com and then click on the adoption tab across the top of the page. This should bring up our on-line adoption application. Once you’ve submitted the application, someone will be right back in touch with you. n
SE's Always On.
My racing name is SE’s Always On, but my pals call me Always. I am a two year old, gorgeous fawn boy. See how happy I am? That is my normal outlook on life. I am so friendly and calm. When the volunteers take me outside to play, I walk out. I do not run or jump…until I get outside. Then I run as fast as I can and play with my buddies. I would love to be part of your family and your best friend.

Spay Stokes
Hailey is a pretty female Beagle mix dog with her estimated date of birth to be 2005. She is a sweet girl and would probably do best in a home with no small children. Hailey loves to run and chase birds, typical Beagle behavior! She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations, heartworm tested, on monthly prevention and microchipped. A great dog who deserves a great home!
To make Hailey a part of your family, call us at 336-971-2963 or visit our website to fill out an application at: www.spaystokes.com. n
Jameson.
This happy pup loves to be around his people. He is a 10 month old Lab/Hound/maybe-something-else-mix. Jameson weighs approximately 50 lbs. and should not get much bigger. This boy is so smart! He very easily grasped commands such as sit, down, and stay. Now he is learning, quite literally, to jump through hoops. Jameson would do well with an active and experienced owner and with someone who will continue his training. Stepping Stones Canine Rescue
