ON THE COVER: Sapphire is a dog who has had a rough start in life, but she is on her way to a happy ending. She is four years old and had always lived on a short chain. Part of one of her ears is missing, we don’t know how that happened, but we know it probably wasn’t pleasant. Sapphire was extremely skinny and had a bad skin infection when she was rescued. She was also pregnant and is heartworm positive. She’s now spayed and will be treated for heartworms before adoption. Saphire has a strong prey drive and can’t be in a home with cats or small dogs. She would make a loving, loyal companion. She is so appreciative of anything that is done for her. Her adoption donation is $100.
For information about adopting Sapphire, or any of the animals in the cover story or animals that are in our adoption center, contact Loving Pet Inn Adoptions at: 336-393-0000 or go online: www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org/.

Committed to Love By Dara Lamberson, Loving Pet Inn Adoptions
F
ebruary is the month we all associate with love. Valentine’s Day is almost here and we are all in love with being in love! The definition of love is a deep, tender feeling of affection. What could be better than that?! Everyone cherishes those first feelings of love butterflies in your stomach, excitement and your pounding heart. The human body releases chemicals during this first phase of love and nothing the object of your affection does can upset you. You see no fault in anything about them. You are just floating in the clouds with joy! Wow, don’t we wish this feeling could last forever? The love you feel for a new baby, puppy, kitten, dog or cat is another heart warmer. But as we all know, the newness does eventually wear off and something deeper must evolve in order for the relationship to last and flourish. The boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, baby or pet are living creatures who are imperfect and, inevitably, they are going to do something to irritate you at some point.
12
This is where something deeper must come in...Commitment. The definition of commitment is the state of being dedicated or an obligation that restricts freedom. It is synonymous with responsibility, obligation and duty. That does not sound like as much fun as just being in love! None of us want our freedom restricted. But in order for a relationship to work there has to be some sacrifices made. How sad it is when long term relationships or marriages break up due to “loving someone, but not being in love”. This is probably caused by not realizing that the relationship is just evolving to that deeper level. Yes, you will miss the excitement and passion that you had when it was new, but those who stick it out through thick and thin will see the reward of a deeper bond. Pet ownership is a perfect example of a relationship that is so rewarding, yet it requires many sacrifices. Dog owners, especially, have to arrange their schedules around their pet. Sleeping late on weekends or going shopping after work may not be an option. That sweet, snuggly dog is raring to

go after a good night’s sleep or a day home alone. If your budget allows, occasional daycare or a mid-day dog walker is a great way to insure you come home to a worn out pup! Having a pet requires more housecleaning, especially with the heavy shedding breeds. Even the best trained pet can get an upset stomach from time to time and have an accident. My husband and I have vivid, not so fond memories of coming home to our dog’s “salad shooter” accident. The discovery of that mess after a long, hard day at work was not fun! We just had to get in there and clean it up. Pet ownership requires financial sacrifices also. You can budget for the routine expenses, but inevitably there will be some medical needs that crop up unexpectedly at some point. I will never forget when my first puppy broke with parvo and I had to postdate a check to the vet that was equal to a month’s salary for me! I was young and had no credit cards, so my meals for that month were limited to lots of ramen noodle concoctions. It is heartbreaking to
hear of pet owners who feel forced to give up their pet due to financial issues. Luckily, our community has many resources to help pet owners with financial difficulties. The Guilford County Animal Shelter has a food bank program called My Best Friends Food Pantry. Any Guilford County resident who is struggling to afford feeding their pet should call them at 336-297-5020 for assistance. There are also several low cost vaccine clinics in the area, including Central Spay Neuter and Wellness Clinic (see ad on page 23) and Planned Pethood, a program of the Humane Society of the Piedmont. If you are a pet owner who is on a tight budget, one great way to ease the strain is to tell any friends or relatives that a great gift idea for you would be supplies for your pet or a gift certificate to your vet, groomer or boarding kennel. They will probably be relieved to not have to shop for the perfect holiday gift for you! Behavioral issues can cause pet owners to surrender their pet also. Pets, like children require consistency in order to develop desirable behaviors. Anything your pet is doing that you do not like needs to be addressed the first time it happens. Rescues often hear of pets given up due to something that could have been very easily fixed early in the game. Local rescue groups can be a great source of suggestions for help with behavioral issues. Many times there is a very simple solution that you just haven’t thought of.
There is no way to put a value on the joy that a pet will bring into your life. They are worth every bit of extra time, energy and money that they require. Be sure to reach out to the many resources our community offers if you ever find yourself struggling to be able to keep your pet. Between the clinics, food banks, rescues and trainers, there is probably enough help to figure out a way so you will not have to consider giving up your pet. The rewards of that long term commitment will come back to you in ways you can’t ever imagine!

LASER THERAPY FOR YOUR PET Q: My older dog is having issues with arthritis in his spine and hips. He is currently on anti-inflammatory medication and glucosamine. What else can be done to make him more comfortable? A: Class Four laser therapy is another non-medication option that is available to the veterinary practitioner for use in treating various disorders, including arthritis. The first studies of laser therapy were done about forty years ago. Since then, thousands of studies have shown the positive effects laser light has on cells and different body tissues. Laser light is classified by its power levels. Class 3 therapy lasers are below 1 watt in power. Class 4 is from 1 watt to 20 watts. The power level, frequency of the laser light, and pulsation of the light are used to allow for the best therapy possible. Advances in technology have allowed this modality to be more accessible to the veterinary practitioner.
Q: Are there any side effects to treatment? A: Currently there are no side effects known to using a therapy laser. However, laser therapy should not be used in close proximity to tissues affected by cancer.
consist of multiple treatments over two to three weeks. For treating spinal arthritis, we will recommend treating two to three times a week for a total of six treatments.
Q:What is involved in a “treatment”? A: The laser light is transmitted from a base unit through a flexible fiber-optic cable to a hand-piece. This hand-piece is moved over the tissue area being treated. As the laser therapy is being administered most patients relax, the almost immediate pain relief and warmth allows patients to become more comfortable and initial anxiety then dissipates.
Q: Will my pet need to be shaved in the area of treatment? A: No. The computer protocols set in to the machine before treatment take into account the hair color, skin color and even hair length.
Q: How does it work? A: The laser light is transmitted by the unit and is transferred into the tissues being treated. The tissues absorb the photons or “packets” of light into the cells. These packets are then absorbed by the mitochondria of the cells. The mitochondria of each cell is the the cells’ “power house”. The interaction between the mitochondria and the laser light cause a chemical change termed, “photo-biomodulation”, which increases cellular energy, known as ATP. Injured and impaired cells produce lower amounts of ATP than normal cells. By increasing the ATP present in the cells, we allow the injured and impaired cells the extra energy to repair and heal. This allows for healthier cells, healthier tissues and healthier patients.
Q: What will I need to do at home after treatment. A: Depending on what tissue and problem is being treated, your veterinarian will direct you as to the home care instructions with regard to activity after treatment.
Q: When can I expect to see an improvement in my pet’s condition? A: You may see relief after the first or second treatment as pain and inflammation are reduced. For joint conditions you may see increased mobility and activity in just a few days. For wounds and dermatological conditions, faster healing times, drier skin and a more relaxed and comfortable pet may be noted. Since each condition and each issue being treated is different, improvement will be based on the condition’s complexity and treatment length.
Q: What can be treated with laser therapy? A: Laser therapy can be used to treat a variety of injuries such as healing wounds, fractures, neurological and dermatological conditions. We also use our Class 4 laser to treat patients that suffer from arthritis pain and inflammation. If your pet is recovering from an injury, healing from a wound or surgery, or simply aging, laser therapy has been shown to provide relief and speed healing.
Q: How long does treatment take. A: Usually treatments take less then one-half hour. Length of treatment is determined by different protocols which are based on what disease the patient is being treated for, how large the patient is, hair color and length, skin color, and what areas are being treated. Some protocols are as short as one to two treatments. Some protocols

Jethro
is a friendly, active Aussie and Schnauzer mix puppy, about nine months old. He is working on cratetraining and is doing well with housebreaking. He has a slight under-bite, which is part of his charm. He loves to play and run and would love to have a fenced yard. He gets along with other dogs and loves attention from his people. Come meet Jethro at AARF’s Saturday adoption fair (every Saturday), noon to 4pm, at 311 Harvey Street or call 768-7387. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within one hour of Winston-Salem. n
Radium. Hi! I’m Radium, a sweet 5 year old boy who is searching for my next home, as my owners can no longer care for me. I am already housebroken, and I love people and dogs and get along with the cat in my house, too. I love riding in the car and hanging out in crowds. One of my eyes is blue, and the other is brown, which makes me even more special. This is a great opportunity for someone looking for a young, handsome adult dog instead of a pesky puppy! Come meet Radium at AARF’s Saturday adoption fair (every Saturday), noon to 4pm, at 311 Harvey Street or call 768-7387. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within one hour of Winston-Salem. n

Zoe. My name is Zoe and my foster mom says I am a “dream doggie” who is always smiling. I live with an active 3 year old now and I love to follow him around, play catch, and snuggle with him. I really like car rides and feeling the wind on my face. I like to chew on bones my foster mom buys me, but I never chew on anything that is not a dog toy or a bone. My foster mom says she loves that I don’t beg for human food or get in the trash. I am really smart too. I already know how to sit, give a paw, go to the bathroom outside, and sit when you put on my leash. Come meet Zoe at AARF’s Saturday adoption fair (every Saturday), noon to 4pm, at 311 Harvey Street or call 768-7387. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within one hour of Winston-Salem. n
Wilbur is a short-haired grey and white tabby, already neutered, about two years old. He was abandoned in an apartment with several other cats and dogs. He’s sweet and loving and needs a new permanent home. Drop by the AARF House at 311 Harvey Street during an adoption fair to meet Wilbur or call 768-7387 for more information. n
Buffy. Want a lap kitty? Take a look at Buffy! She’d like nothing better that to curl up in your lap and get rubs and pats. Buffy is a medium long-haired buff (dilute orange/red) spayed female. We estimate that she was born mid 2011. It’s only an estimate because we got her from Animal Control shortly before she and her 5 kittens were scheduled for the needle. Buffy was a wonderful mom -- she took excellent care of her babies and now she needs a forever home. She’s a playful, social and very affectionate adult kitty waiting for you to take her home. Drop by the AARF House at 311 Harvey Street during an adoption fair to meet Buffy or call 768-7387 for more information. n

will soon be three years old and in her short Pit Bull life she has already been through so much! She was rescued by the Animal Rescue and Foster Program (ARFP) ready to give birth any day. Once her puppies were weaned Zena went to live in a home for 11 months until that home decided they couldn’t keep her due to their demanding job. Now she is back in ARFP and looking for a forever home. Zena is the perfect dog. She is loving, quiet, gentle, and a HUGE lap dog. Zena weighs 34 lbs. and is absolutely a delight to be with. She is fine with cats but would prefer to be the only dog in her forever home.

Cam. Meet
Clyde.
Cam! Yes, we all know what quarterback she was named after. We haven’t told her that the REAL Cam is a boy. Bless her little heart! Cam is a Pit Bull mix puppy born on November 30, 2013. If you’re looking for a mini me she could be yours. She bonds quickly and then will follow you around like a shadow. Cam is up-to-date on her vaccinations and dewormings and will soon be spayed. Then all she’ll need is a forever home! She’s taking names and applications now!
Remember Bonnie and Clyde? Meet Clyde of Bonnie & Clyde. He’s a 12 lb. Dachshund Pomeranian mix born in August 2013. Clyde and sister Bonnie were deemed homeless when their owner was evicted. Fortunately, ARFP heard about the sibling group and had room for them. Clyde is more outgoing than sister Bonnie. They both LOVE other dogs and love to play. Both pups have proven that they are lap dogs and love nothing better than watching TV from their foster dad’s lap. Clyde is neutered and up-to-date on shots. He is on heartworm and flea preventative as well. Looking for the perfect little lap dog?

Rosie is a beautiful (estimated DOB 9/6/11) spayed female adult Dilute Calico kitty. She’s a sweet girl who enjoys cuddles and attention. She is quiet and isn’t fond of being held, although she’ll come right up to snuggle next to you. She loves the kitty igloos we have in the Humane Society of Adoption Center, and is Davie County perfectly content being curled up inside her igloo for most of the day. FERAL CAT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM 336.378.0878 / www.feralcatassistance.org
Sage.
Howie.
This handsome, long-haired tuxedo is about 3 years old, so he has experienced a bit of life. He is not easily startled and has a calm demeanor. Sage knows what he’s looking for in a new home. Though he is not a lap cat, Sage likes to follow his people around, much like a dog would. And if you’ve seen him at PetSmart, you know that he is the size of a small dog! Sage really loves his scratching post and is fond of his plush leopard-spotted bed. He is up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped and neutered.
Despite his humble start in life, handsome Howie has never met a stranger. As a kitten, he was rescued from a feral cat colony where he had been abandoned. That was a good day for this Maine Coon mix, now 9 months old and quite the extrovert. At 10.5 lbs., Howie already is a big boy and likely will grow larger. He was born with a heart murmur, but you would never know it. He loves to play with other cats and friendly dogs. Howie likes to be held and will give you a kiss on the face. The next minute, he’s off your lap for some roughand-tumble playtime. Howie would like to have a loving, permanent home. He’s is up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped and neutered.

Pearl is on the hunt for
Jangles
a special person to love. This gorgeous silver tabby warms up slowly, but your patience will pay off. Although Pearl does not seek constant attention, she loves to lie in the sun near her human companion and appreciates petting and an occasional belly rub. You can see the love in her brilliant green eyes. Pearl is a calm girl but also enjoys play time. She prefers to be your only kitty but would adapt to life with a dog. Pearl would do best with adults and teenagers. If you seek a beautiful cat who does not require lots of attention, Pearl may be the one. This kitty is up-to-date on vaccinations, has been spayed, and has a microchip.
is one of several tuxedo cats currently available through FCAP. Like most tuxedos, Jangles is a friendly boy who seeks human contact. Tuxedo cats have a following among cat lovers. Some of the popular names for this type of cat include: Oreo, Panda, Zebra, Yinyang, Ritz, Boots, C.C. (Coffee & Cream), Eight Ball, Half & Half, Gala, and Moomoo. Jangles and his feline friends don’t mind if you change their names. Next time you are at PetSmart on Bridford Parkway in Greensboro, come say hello to Jangles. He is current on vaccinations, microchipped and neutered.

Stash. An introvert at heart, Stash is a bit on the shy side. He wants to get to know you before he makes a commitment. You can trust him with your secrets – he won’t tell a soul. And if you are patient and love him for long enough, you may earn this fine feline’s trust. This kitty is called a tuxedo, and Stash’s costume includes white boots. Tradition tells us that William Shakespeare owned a tuxedo cat, as did Beethoven and Sir Isaac Newton. Stash is current on vaccinations, neutered and microchipped. She seemed afraid and forgotten. Maybe she had been born into these woods. Maybe she had been dumped out.
Encounter on a Tennessee Mountain Slick By: Sarah C. Fulcher
On my last road trip across America I got lost in a Tennessee summer rainstorm. The winding road I was on cut straight through a mountain. I had gotten sleepy so I pulled over. The slope loomed above me wet, soggy, and steep. As I got out of my car to stretch my legs, I heard a piercing noise sounding of pain and agony. At first I thought it was human and I was drawn to it. Then I realized it was feline. I crossed over to the slope and began pulling myself up by the large roots through the mud and the wet rhododendrons. My hands fought through the soaked leaf mulch. I slipped. Then I heard the noise again. I stumbled upon a fallen tree and gazed into the hollow trunk. There glowed two wild, green eyes of a rain soaked, frail black cat. She hissed and bared sharp white teeth that shone through the fog. She glared back at me. We came face to face, both of us lost and scared. The cat huddled further into the stump. She seemed afraid and forgotten. Maybe she had been born into these woods. Maybe she had been dumped out. Wet and scrawny, the cat blinked angrily at me. There was terror in those eyes from a hard and loveless life. Then I saw kittens hiding in the depths of the tree trunk. They would suffer her same fate. More and more kittens would be born into the forsaken lives of feral cats. The rain began to pour hard again, and the thunder shook the ground under my feet. Muddy and wet, I slid back down the hill. The cat’s warning cries faded, but I could still see the fear in her eyes. That memory will always be with me, for now I understand the heart of a feral cat.

Erik is a gorgeous 3 year old boy pulled from Rutherford County Animal Control just in time. We don’t know much about his past, as he was picked up as a stray, but we believe at some point he was a well taken care of pup. He’s house-trained, crate-trained, knows sit, come off and leave it, with proper introduction does well with other dogs his size and is good with dog savy kids. He loves to play with squeakies, swim and go for walks. Erik has a wonderful temperament but will require an experienced owner, who will keep him well exercised and work with him on obedience training. Lily Pad was found as
her owners could no longer care for her. Reagan has lots of energy to go around and loves to play with other dogs and her Kong toys! She was hit by a car last February and had to have extensive orthopedic surgery. Her bad leg doesn’t slow her down one bit, although prolonged exercise like longs walks, running or hiking should be avoided. Reagan has been spayed, microchipped, and is current on all of her vaccinations.

Misha here, popping in to to tell you a few things about me. I’m 2 years old and an impeccably dressed fellow. Call me crazy but no one works a bowtie like I do. Lucy. I’m the perfect package and I’m looking for a home…that’s why I have my glasses my on. My foster mom is trying to find me a loving home, where I will fit right in. I’m a happy little six year old girl who looks like a miniature Husky. I love to go on walks, ride in the car, and sit on the couch with you. I like other dogs and kids. I don’t hear all Chihuahua Rescue that well, that is why I like to follow you around. A home visit, reference check and an adoption donation (goes towards the care of me and other Chihuahuas that need help) is requested.
I’m 8 years young and quite the catch, if I must say so myself. CBHR and my foster mom have done an excellent job at getting me all spiffed up and ready for my forever home. I almost have “sit” down to a science. I love cats and dogs, being outside and sniffing new things. I wasn’t an inside Carolina Basset Hound pet in my former life, but I’ve got that Rescue covered now. I get excited and act like a puppy at feeding time and outdoor play. Chase is a favorite pastime of mine. I’m a pretty good leash walker, but I do like to stop and smell the roses, what hound doesn’t? Training Your Pet
Does Your Dog Really Need That Walk? by Angela Craven, Moms 4 Paws
N
ow that winter has arrived, many people may be tempted to not walk their dog as often, especially when temperatures dip as they did last month. We have to ask ourselves, is this really a good choice? One of our biggest responsibilities as dog owners is to ensure our dogs get all their basic needs fulfilled, which includes not only food, water and shelter, but also exercise. Just as you or I need some sort of activity in a day, so does your dog, and walking is one of the activities you can both benefit from the most. Yes there are other ways to exercise your pet, but a walk can play many roles in the relationship you have with your dog. First, use the walk for basic exercise. This is the most straightforward role a walk plays for you and your pet. Not only are you getting exercise (whether you need it or not), but you are ensuring your pet gets some too. As with humans, a dog that does not get the proper amount of physical activity (usually at least 40 minutes-1 hour a day) can become overweight. Dogs were not designed to be overweight, their joints cannot take the extra pressure, and the extra weight may put them at risk for a torn ligament or even worse. Older dogs, overweight dogs, or dogs that need rehabilitation from an injury may also stand to gain huge benefits from a daily walk or two. The walks help to strengthen muscles, shed unwanted pounds, and even help with arthritis symptoms. I have seen dogs that had major knee injuries start an appropriate walking regimen which changed their whole demeanor and energy level. Many begin to act like young puppies, bright-eyed and bushy tailed, and

much more playful. Second, use your walk to bond with your pet. That’s right, taking a walk with your dog in the correct manner, letting them know you are in charge, can be one of the best ways to bond with your dog. It is important to make sure your dog walks next to you in a heel position, not pulling ahead or dragging behind. Walking a dog confidently in this manner teaches the dog to rely on you, encouraging him to release any need to be in control. This allows a nervous or anxious dog to relax and enjoy his time spent with you. The more situations that you can have in which your dog sees you in control, the better your bond becomes, giving him the opportunity to just be a dog and relinquish any worries he may have about being the leader. Lastly, your walk is about satisfying your dog’s need to relieve his energy, both physically and mentally. Those of us who have wonderful dogs that are great while we are home, but are anxious the minute we leave (maybe chewing the house apart?), can benefit enormously from a proper daily walk. After all, a tired dog is a happy dog. Many dogs that have problems with chewing, barking, digging, jumping, anxiety and even some forms of aggression may just have pent-up energy that needs to be released. For these dogs, adding a walk or two to their day can make a remarkable difference. When a dog is tired, truly tired, they don’t think about chewing your favorite couch because they are too busy sleeping. No matter what your reason for walking is, it is important to stick to it year round. If you skip too many walks you are risking
February 2014 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
the reoccurrence of any bad behaviors or health issues the walks helped to curb. You want to be sure you walk at a good pace for both you and your dog, and walk long enough to ensure your dog gets tired. Keep in mind, some dogs will need more than one walk a day to keep their energy level tolerable. No matter how you exercise your dog, be it a walk, run, or a game of fetch, remember to use these times to bond with your pet and enjoy every minute.

~The Three Winners~ Joyner student Caden Mrkva’s essay for his cat Daisy: “Have you ever thought ‘what happens when an animal stays in a shelter too long’? I can answer that. They get euthanized, which means they get put down. Do you know that about 4 million homeless animals are put down at shelters each year? But we can stop (that) by doing one thing for our pets, spaying and neutering. Spaying and neutering is something you do for your pet that makes them not have babies, have a lesser chance of spraying to mark their territory, and running away…” Joyner student Joshua Williman’s essay for his dog Biscuit: “I think we should spay dogs because if you don’t, they can have puppies that are unwanted. Also some dogs or cats die or go to the animal shelter. So you can spay and neuter them to stop the problem. Caring for a pet takes a lot of responsibility and hard work. If people spay or neuter their animals they can help stop the overpopulation problem. In conclusion animals are just like people they need to be loved and taken care of.” Our Lady of Grace student Anna Maria Bagnoli’s Essay (the prize will be donated to a Guilford County pet in need)

population. Millions of animals are taken into shelters every year. If pets are spayed or neutered they will not have babies and there will be fewer animals in shelters. Dogs and cats can also be put to sleep. Come adopt a pet if you don’t like that!” In the future, the Pet Responsibility Program will be a special initiative of the Guilford County Department of Environmental Health/Animal Control. The program’s goal is to reach students at a minimum of ten different schools in Guilford County in 2014.

Five New SciQuarium Faces for 2014
n June of 2013 Mark Lee (8) and Jelly (5), two Asian Small-Clawed Otters, said “I do.” Well, not really, but that is when they were united together in the newly opened Carolina SciQuarium at the Greensboro Science Center. The couple was chosen as mates by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan. Asian Small-Clawed Otter populations have declined significantly in their native range. Captive breeding programs with these species have also slumped in recent years. The goal was for Mark Lee and Jelly to take a liking to each other and sure enough they did. Within four months, Jelly was pregnant and on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2013, five new otter pups were born. The birth marks the first birth of this species in North Carolina. The litter consists of two males and three females. As they were born on one of the most patriotic of holidays, the offspring were given patriotic names which were determined through an online voting poll. Over 1000 votes were received and the female pups were named Molly, Abigail and Eleanor. The male pups were named Theodore and Quincy. Mark Lee and Jelly are doing a great job rearing their offspring, especially Mark Lee. While males of most spe-

cies have little to no role after breeding, Asian Small-Clawed Otters mate for life and both parents care for the tiny pups. Mark Lee can be seen rolling around on the floor with his babies and, in addition to being a great protector, he is a very good swim coach. Since pups typically don’t learn to swim until around three months of age, they are being kept behind the scenes of their SciQuarium habitat, which features a large pool, until keepers are comfortable with their aquatic abilities. It is anticipated they will be swimming on their own and able to go into the main exhibit sometime in February. Asian Small-Clawed Otters form monogamous pairs, usually producing two litters per year. The Center is hopeful this is just the first of many otter offspring. Glenn Debrogosz, GSC Executive Director, says “The significance of these births will not only positively impact the international breeding program but it also allows hundreds of thousands of visitors the opportunity to observe what few have ever seen before, bonded otter parents teaching their pups to swim, hunt, climb and play.” To track the pups’ progress and learn when they will be released on exhibit for public viewing, follow the GSC on Facebook.

In Search of a Friend

ost of the animals in my life I just happened upon. Through friends, neighbors or the animals themselves, strays would find a way into my home and my heart. Simply put, they had a need and I had the ability to fill that need. That is how my house became a home to a variety of breeds, species and, most notably, personalities. Lilah Dean is one exception to that rule. The day I met Lilah I was searching for a companion, not just for my husband and me, but also for our collie-shepherd mix, Zoey. Zoey suffered from severe separation anxiety and we felt a friend would help calm her. Zoey was very comfortable around other dogs and was especially fond of smaller pups. With that in mind, we began our search at the Guilford County Animal Shelter. It is always disturbing to walk the rows of kennels full of sad and barking dogs. These poor animals were forgotten, tossed away or simply born due to human insolence and idiocy. As important as it is to pick an animal that is best suited for your household, it is so distressing to pick one above all the rest. Lilah was the first dog we found that was a proper size for Zoey. Her unusual marking and large ears quickly got her noticed. 46
Sadly, when we took her to the visitation area she had no interest in us at all. Lilah would not even take a treat or ball from us, let alone make eye contact. She just stood there gazing into the distance. We felt there was something special about Lilah, but we were afraid her spirit had been broken. Because of the cold reception, we decided to leave that day with empty arms and a heavy heart. Over the weekend, we discussed several dogs we saw online and visited another shelter in the next county. Still Lilah kept coming up in conversation. We decided to visit her again if she was still available for adoption. Fortunately for us, she was there on Monday afternoon. Her mood was still somber, but we were hopeful that her disposition would improve once she was in a better environment. After Lilah was spayed, we brought her home. It was obvious that she was nauseous from surgery. We still had to introduce her to Zoey before we could bring her inside. They met on relatively neutral territory in the front yard. Eager sniffs and a few low growls were exchanged between the two. However, considering Lilah’s condition, all went very well. We gave her our guest bedroom to recoup from the long day. A bath was first on the agenda when she was feeling better. Almost desperate to get clean, she went into the water readily. Zoey that begs for her to be named “Bandit.” She was beautiful. Zoey and Lilah quickly became friends. Their friendship was cemented one day when a strange dog quickly approached Lilah with the intent to fight. Zoey stepped confidently between the dog and Lilah and made the dog about-face with only a snarl! Zoey’s response surprised us all as she is the most composed of all the animals. As we had trusted, Lilah’s personality truly blossomed once she grew into her new surroundings. She was much younger than initially thought, as her playfulness, chewing and lack of housetraining demonstrated. A chewed tennis ball remains her favorite. Lilah likes to play her own version of fetch. She will retrieve the ball, but will not return it to your hand. She must toss it up in the air towards you. From her point of view - that’s how you handed it to her! Initially described as a corgi mix, Lilah looked to be a mix of any variety of breeds. She has definitive traits of herder and guardian breeds. Her herding tendencies were evident from early on. Lilah would nip at my heels to make me move quicker or in the direction she desired. This behavior was halted swiftly with only a few quick finger snaps. Being quite bright made training easy for basic commands. However, she is just as stubborn as she is clever. House-training and bark training were more difficult to teach. A solid routine fixed the house-training issue. However,
“…For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the —Rudyard Kipling strength of the Wolf is the Pack.” from time to time we still have a hard time with her barking. According to Lilah, it is her job to ensure that the household is in order and everyone is accounted for, including Zoey and the cats. Lilah alerts us to “dangers” in the neighborhood such as joggers or guests arriving. What is both funny and frustrating about her barking is that as soon as the bark leaves her lips, she puts her head down, ears back as to say “OOPs! I didn’t mean to.” She will then grumble under her breath until the “threat” passes. She even goes as far as to referee the cats when there’s a tussle. The cats tolerate Lilah’s attention and often listen to her calls. Lilah also checks the fence perimeter every trip outside. One day while doing her rounds, she stepped wrong and cried out in pain. Fortunately, Lawndale Veterinary Hospital is just down the road. Dr. Karyn Waterman confirmed that she had torn her CCL, but not completely. Lilah was put on
bed rest for weeks to avoid surgery. She could walk some, but was restricted from any running and use of stairs. The dog that never had any interest in sitting on the couch, would eagerly lay with me in the evenings while we watched TV. Her tenderness and trust were a welcome change from the coldness of our first encounter. My husband and I had a family reunion scheduled at Ocean Isle shortly after her injury and I did not want to leave Lilah in this condition with the pet sitter. With the vet’s approval, we took Lilah with us. This was her very first trip with us. We provided a special bed for her ride to ensure her comfort. Once at the beach, we carried Lilah down to the shore so she could see what all the fuss was about. She didn’t know what to think of the ocean. She did eventually walk down to the edge of the water and get her feet wet. I believe Lilah now eagerly gets in the car in hopes of going back to the beach.
Lilah Once at the beach, we carried Lilah down to the shore so she could see what all the fuss was about.
Upon our arrival home, Zoey had done great. She had not chewed or showed any signs of anxiety. She did, however, sniff Lilah very thoroughly! Lilah was just what Zoey needed to regain her confidence and self-assurance. The two work great together. Their camaraderie and bond have made them both better dogs. Their lives are better not just because they have loving pet parents, but because they have friends.
Susan Lynn Person has lived in Greensboro, NC since 1993. She and her husband, Griff, are currently living with five cats and four dogs, all of which are rescues. The chaos in their lives is unreal, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. When she has the time, she enjoys reading, photography and cycling.
Zoey and Lilah I was searching for a companion, not just for my husband and me, but also for our collie-shepherd mix, Zoey. Zoey suffered from severe separation anxiety and we felt a friend would help calm her. www.triadhappytails.com February 2014
