HAPPY’S NEW YEAR! Happy is an 8-year-old Labrador who was evaluated for our unique pain management and treatment of severe osteoarthritis of his elbow, hips and spine. Happy also suffered from “pinched nerves” in his neck and severe wasting of his shoulder muscles. Happy did not have a pain-free leg to stand on. All of his arthritic joints, spine and his shoulder were treated with extracorporeal shockwave followed by injections of PRP (platelet rich plasma). Just one week later, Happy’s human called to say that the treatment was “miraculous.” After having several Chiropractic adjustments to alleviate the neck pain, Happy was able to start physical therapy to strengthen his weak muscles. You can track Happy’s long-term recovery on our website after he receives a rejuvenating stem cell treatment.

FROM THE PUBLISHERS
T
ime flies as the saying goes. Another year has ended and a new one just begun. 2014 will mark our fourth year anniversary, we are so happy to still be here and counting ourselves survivors of the great recession. It is our sincere wish that everyone will have a successful and happy new year. There’s so much work left undone, please join us in our goal to work even harder and smarter this new year to create a better world for all creatures sharing this planet! The chilly winter months can be tough on everyone, especially our animal friends. Let’s all be aware of taking care of our own friends as well as those we see all around us. Be observant! Is there a dog shivering outside with inadequate shelter and a frozen water dish? Did you see a skinny scared cat slinking under the shrubs? Was there a cage with a rabbit huddled in a corner trying to escape an icy blast? Every living creature needs food, water, a warm spot out of the cold and love. We scurry through our busy lives and sometimes fail to
see something right under our noses. We should all make one very important New Year’s resolution, pay more attention to our Deb Printup Jennifer Frazier surroundings. Your one phone call or knock on a door could make a huge impact on someone’s very life. Finally, an announcement. We are adding a second Veterinary column to our monthly publication. One of our goals next year is to include more editorial that will interest and inform our readers. Our Vets contribute so much, not only with their advice, but in their demanding daily professions. We hope you will all benefit and enjoy, this is just one new feature we are adding this year. We promise there are more changes on the way! Happy New Year!

Charlie was a rambunctious medium-sized LOST DOGS black and glossy young pup about whom we A TALE OF THREE DOGS Elsie and Emma were brought to us as knew very little. understandably -- did not want to spend time with him, which meant that his behaviors became even more aggravated. We were worried about Charlie. Adoption center director Lynn Northup took Charlie under her wing as a special “reform dog” project. She noticed that the volunteers and staff interacting with Charlie were responding to his behavior in many different ways. No wonder Charlie was so crazy; everybody was telling him to do something different! Lynn wrote up a common protocol of responses to Charlie’s behavior. Danny Rawlings, an employee and dog trainer, took extra time to work with Charlie on his walks. And FHS introduced play dates for paired dogs in our large playpen. These play dates allowed us to match Charlie with more mature (and sometimes bigger) dogs who would not put up with his juvenile hijinks. At first this “hard play” can be uncomfortable to watch -- it appears aggressive and we worry that someone will get hurt. Think about how you would feel watching a high school football game if you didn’t know the rules. Once you know the rules, it’s just fun. We loved watching Charlie go to town in the play pen with another dog. And, we all know a tired dog is a happy dog! Charlie began to come around. Rufus. Oh Rufus. All we knew about Rufus was that he was the goofiest looking dog on the planet, and that his personality matched his looks. Rufus has the turned out feet and short stubby legs of a Basset, the head of a Beagle, and the body of a golden Lab. And Rufus liked his food. A lot. Everybody loved Rufus.
HOMECOMING
Elsie, Charlie, and Rufus’ lives came together for a brief hour under the spotlight with Cesar. They were chosen because they exhibited shyness, rambunctiousness, and food protectiveness. Cesar worked with them beautifully and we all -- human and canine -- learned a lot. All of these dogs (and Emma too) went home to loving families. Elsie went from her foster mom to a single young man who is an active walker and jogger. Elsie’s foster mom cried the day
Elsie left her, but she took comfort in the knowledge that Elsie had learned to trust and would be bonding with her forever human. Emma graduated with honors from New Leash on Life, our ten week training program at the Forsyth County Correctional Facility, and went home with a young couple who have showered her with love, attention, and toys.

Mercy,
Charlie was adopted by a young family who is keeping him busy and tired. Everyone at FHS cheered the day Charlie went to his forever home. Rufus was adopted by his stage handler at the Cesar Millan event, Charlotte Croft. Charlotte simply fell in love and couldn’t say goodbye to this goofy dog. Rufus has grown and grown and grown and is as goofy as ever. Rufus now goes by the name of Cesar. Every dog has his tale. We all come to define our families, and our homes, by different paths. We at FHS are grateful every day to be a step in that path, and to play a small part in so many happy tales.

Clyde.
Coltrane.
We’re featuring this 4 month old lab mix puppy, again, because we literally cannot believe he has not been scooped up. Listen up, ladies! Clyde is handsome, loyal, AND a great listener! What more could you ask for in a guy? He is doing great with house-training and learned “sit” in less than one day. He will do anything for treats and cuddles! Clyde is great with other pets and loves children!.
Here is our boy Coltrane with his foster brother Scrappy. Coltrane is a deaf white pit bull terrier, but he’s here to say that he is no different than any other dog. Well-behaved and smart, Cole will have you head over heels in a minute or less. He exudes charm and his personality is a delightful mix of goofy and sweet. This boy is learning hand signals quite well and is 100% potty trained. As you can see, he’s excellent with other animals and he LOVES all people!

Milly.
Penny
Oh, my word. This girl is a shining star! Look at how glamorous she is! If we had to compare her to a person, we would have to say Audrey Hepburn. She is all class and has the best manners of any kitty we know. Milly loves to cuddle up in a lap for a mid-day snooze and she would do great in a home with other relaxed animals.
is such a beautiful girl with the most interesting personality! She wants to relay that her perfect family would be laid back and allow her to come around at her own pace. Penny loves to explore and is simply darling at 5 months of age. Penny is independent and doesn’t need to be waited on hand and foot- just a little canned food every now and then plus a lot of love is all this girl needs to be happy!

is extra special -- he is a polydactyl -- meaning he has extra toes on each front paw! He was named after author Ernest Miller Hemingway, a lover of polydactyl cats. Miller is quite mischevious. Cookie
is a black and white female cat with long hair. We think she’s 3-4 years old. She has been spayed and is current on shots. After being rescued from Animal Control while very pregnant, she quickly gave birth to four healthy kittens. Cookie was an excellent mom to her four kittens and now it’s her turn to find a forever home. Cookie would prefer to be an only cat. Come visit this outgoing girl at the AARF House at 311 Harvey Street during our adoption fairs or call 768-7387 or visit us at www.aarfanimals.org. n
Cindy.
We know very little about Cindy’s history. She was rescued from the local animal shelter “death row” because of her sweet nature. Cindy is a beautiful short-haired cat -- mostly white with grey tabby markings on her head. She was born in early 2012 (January, maybe). She has been spayed, is current on all vaccinations and tested negative for FeLV and FIV. Drop by the AARF House at 311 Harvey Street during an adoption fair to meet her or contact us at 768-7387 for more information. n
Pansy
is a domestic short hair tortoiseshell female. She was rescued from the animal shelter while pregnant. She went into labor but only had one baby and it was stillborn. She is a sweet kitty and loves to be around people. She will lie right by your side and purr. She follows her foster mom around -she wants to be loved. Although she has been spayed, she has “adopted” two kittens and treats them like her own. She’s a really, really sweet girl. Our best estimate is that she was born in early 2013. Contact us at 768-7387 for more information or drop by the AARF House at 311 Harvey Street during an adoption fair to meet her. n

Laundering-Mats
When first considering a groomer, the assumption is that he/ she will return your pet in pristine condition. In truth, groomers are often faced with ‘correction’ in lieu of creation. Each pet is different in their individual needs, coat texture, calendar of routine maintenance, and demeanor. And while groomers relish the idea of returning your pet looking like something straight from Westminster, the reality may be quite the opposite. Of all the problems that prevent the aforementioned goal, mats are the item with which groomers are most often faced; a glitch in the grooming process that prevents your pet from looking its best. Unlike a tangle, mats are insidious in that they slowly weave with steady progression into a clotted mess that makes simple detangling impossible. While small mats may be prodded to untangle through a variety of methods, shaving the area is often the most humane method of elimination. What then, can be done to minimize the problem and leave your pet’s coat as the perfect canvas upon which your groomer creates? Simple: Daily brushing. Not only does brushing minimize the formation of mats, but it results in early detection of allergies, ear infections, ticks, fleas, and a number of conditions that adversely affect your pet’s health. Most important: Your pet, as a member of your family, will be more readily accepted into the home, and your lap, if clean and free of odors. So take a little time to brush your fur-footer. You will not only be rewarded by a better looking and smelling companion, but by one that benefits from the additional attention. Laundromuttz is a small, family owned business that has been graciously accepted by the Kernersville community. We pride ourselves on our ability to offer individual attention with a minimum of distraction, while making every effort to treat your pet in the manner you would require. And with that--best to the season! by Susan and Gina, Owners of Laundromuttz Pet Grooming Hwy. 66 S., Kernersville

Faith.
8/28/13 is my birthdate and that makes me a Virgo. Virgos are emotionally impulsive, playful, youthful, and charming with a wonderful sense of humor. Our need to express ourselves on a creative level is strong, and it motivates much of what we do. Yep, that’s me! I love to play and usually fall deeply in love with the first person that shows me attention. My name is Faith and I need a forever home. I’m a Terrier/Lab mix with a great face and a personality to match. Charming is my middle name. I love people and all other animals and will promise to love you forever...if you make that promise too. Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n

Ruby.
This is precious Ruby. She is a lovely puppy full of grace, beauty and passion as her name implies. She is prettier than a ruby and she is sweeter than ice cream. Ruby’s Mom is a small Border Collie mix and we can see how smart Ruby is already. She was born on Sept. 15th and has started her crate-training with little complaint. Will you be the one to give her a happy home for the new year? Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n
Max is our sweet guy. Appar-
This sweet young pup is Gizmo. He begins and ends his day with happy enthusiasm. He wants to play and eat and snuggle all at once and then when he can stand no more, he sleeps and looks every bit as happy as when he was awake. What a cutie! He is also quite smart. He learned his name quickly and makes great eye contact, which is very helpful in training. The accent marks on his face chest and feet are stunning and they will grow with him as he becomes a very handsome adult. He is a Border Collie mix born on Sept. 15th, hoping to meet his forever family soon.
ently he was someone’s pet and they abandoned him in a feral cat colony which just happened to be near a residential home for the elderly. The feral colony threw rocks at him and made him feel like an outcast. He continued to look for a place to belong when the employees at the home started feeding him and realized what a great cat he was. After a trip to the vet, where it was discovered he was already neutered, they called us to take him in and...we HEART Max! Now Max is safe indoors, never to be abandoned outdoors again!!! Max was born in December of 2009, or so the vet. said. He is one sweetheart of a cat!

Whitsett.
Rosie loves to play chase with any kind of toy. You throw and she will chase. Rosie knows that she is just a plain brown tabby but she is really hoping someone will notice her before the holidays are over. Her biggest wish would then come true if she were adopted! Rosie was born around 4/20/13 and is going to make a great little sister to someone. Rosie will definitely light up your home!
This little girl is a real jewel! Whitsett is not only beautiful but she is one of the sweetest kittens ever. Found in Whitsett, NC by a kind gentleman who heard a sound coming from his truck, she has turned out to be a delight. Born around 5/16/13 Whisett is spayed, up-to-date on shots, and negative for feline diseases. She plays wonderfully with other kitties and is fine with the puppies she meets. FERAL CAT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM 336.378.0878 / www.feralcatassistance.org
Sage.
This handsome, long-haired tuxedo is about 3 years old, so he has experienced a bit of life. He is not easily startled and has a calm demeanor. Sage knows what he’s looking for in a new home. Though he is not a lap cat, Sage likes to follow his people around, much like a dog would. And if you’ve seen him at PetSmart, you know that he is the size of a small dog! Sage really loves his scratching post and is fond of his plush leopard-spotted bed. He is up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped and neutered. Call 378-0878 or visit www.feralcatassistance.org for information. n
Boo.
Contrary to the superstition that black cats bring bad luck, Boo prefers to think of himself as a good-luck kitty. And there is evidence for Boo’s belief. In Great Britain, tokens in the form of black cats often are given to brides for good luck. People in Scotland believe that a stray black cat will bring prosperity. So Boo has reason to believe that luck is on his side. And young Boo has entertained hundreds of folks at PetSmart with his playful antics. Won’t you open your home to good-luck Boo? Boo is current on vaccinations, has been neutered and has a microchip.
Jangles
is one of several tuxedo cats currently available through FCAP. Like most tuxedos, Jangles is a friendly boy who seeks human contact. Tuxedo cats have a following among cat lovers. Some of the popular names for this type of cat include: Oreo, Panda, Zebra, Yinyang, Ritz, Boots, C.C. (Coffee & Cream), Eight Ball, Half & Half, Gala, and Moomoo. Jangles and his feline friends don’t mind if you change their names. (Although Jangles says he does NOT want to be called Moomoo.) Next time you are at PetSmart on Bridford Parkway in Greensboro, come say hello to Jangles and friends. Jangles is current on vaccinations, microchipped and neutered. Call 378-0878 or visit www.feralcatassistance.org for information. n

Stash. An introvert at heart, Stash is a bit on the shy side. He wants to get to know you before he makes a commitment. You can trust him with your secrets – he won’t tell a soul. And if you are patient and love him for long enough, you may earn this fine feline’s trust. This kitty is called a tuxedo, and Stash’s costume includes white boots. Tradition tells us that William Shakespeare owned a tuxedo cat, as did Beethoven and Sir Isaac Newton. Stash is current on vaccinations, neutered and microchipped. Bobbi. If Bobbi were a painting, she would be a watercolor. On her silky white canvas, silver brush strokes blend to gray and then charcoal. Faint pinstripes give texture and depth. At 5 months old, Bobbi already is quite expressive. She tells us that she likes to “knead the dough” with her paws. As for her politics, we’re not sure; she might be a DemoCAT. Or she might be a RePURRblican. You decide. Bobbi is current on vaccinations, spayed and microchipped. Call 378-0878 or visit www.feralcatassistance.org for information. n
Brulee. Sweet Brulee was rescued from a shelter where his time was up. This beautiful cat is about 2-1/2 years old, very calm and gentle and good with other cats and dogs too. They’ve had a hard life in a trailer park where they had to race up to tree tops or hide under cars to escape dogs, cats and meanspirited people. old female chinchilla, darker than a standard gray. She enjoys surprising you in the mornings by leaping onto your shoulder when the cage door opens for playtime. She has excellent manners and is litter box trained. Nibs enjoys exploring, and is not a significant chewer at this point and enjoys her hay. Nibs was an owner surrender and will make a great companion, lap sitter and wonderful buddy.
came to Red Dog Farm when his owners could no longer care for him. He is very shy but extremely sweet. He likes to be held or to sit on your lap. I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY
H
er eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them. As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one. I rescued a human today.

Special Feature
TWO PAWS UP FOR All Pets Considered By Alison Schwartz
O
ne hot summer day, a dream was born when All Pets Considered opened for business in August of 1992, in Greensboro, NC. Kristine Godfrey launched her retail shop featuring high quality products, great customer service and most importantly, the mission to never sell pets in her store. Instead, she urged her customers to support local animal rescue organizations and adopt their furry family members. The passion for animal rescue has burned in the heart and soul of All Pets Considered from the beginning. They have hosted hundreds of adoption fairs along with an ongoing cat adoption day on the third Saturday of each month. All Pets Considered has been a long-standing sponsor of the “2 to the Rescue” adoption fairs produced by WFMY News 2 quarterly. After the devastating Hurricane Floyd in 1999, the store collected food and supplies for the helpless, desperate animals affected by the tragedy. Currently, the store serves as a foster home for Red Dog Farm, a local rescue organization, by fostering adoptable cats in the store. On a regular basis you can find collection bins for rescue organizations or fund raiser posters hanging on the door. In addition, most of the caring staff at All Pets Considered are involved in rescue organizations outside of their work at the store, committed to ending the pet overpopulation issues that plague our community. In a mission to reach out even further to the animal rescue groups and local community, All Pets Considered is launching an innovative new program called “Two Paws Up”. This program was born out of a desire to not only strengthen the local rescue organizations, but to also build partnerships with other local businesses. The two paws are the representation of both local rescue and local businesses working together for the welfare of animals. The initial launch of the program will
include coupons that will be distributed to partnering businesses, who then give the coupons to their clients to be used at All Pets Considered. When the customer redeems the coupon at the store, a donation of $1 per coupon will be donated to a rescue organization that has been designated by the partnering business. In the second tier of the program, All Pets Considered will be partnering with food manufacturers to provide coupons to potential adopters as an introduction to the many varieties of food sold at their store. These coupons will also benefit the rescue organization as they will receive the much needed donated food back for every coupon redeemed. All Pets Considered recognizes that a key component to eliminating the tragedy of unwanted animals is to promote spay/neuter for pets that are not reputably bred. In order to further support that component in our community, All Pets Considered also plans to launch a “Bonus Bucks for Two Paws Up” program in mid-January. This exciting venture will be a store loyalty program partnering with the SPOT Mobile Spay & Wellness program at the Guilford County Animal Shelter. Customers will receive bonus bucks and can choose to redeem them as a coupon towards their own purchases or donate the bonus bucks towards the program. A quarterly check will be written in honor of the customers at All Pets Considered based upon how many bonus bucks have been donated by customers. The mission to sustain local business does not stop at the “Two Paws Up” program. It also reaches out to the product lines carried in the store, such as locally made treats by Pawlee’s Treat Company, made in Kernersville, NC,
in addition to several lines of locally-made collars featured throughout the store. Many exciting changes are coming to All Pets Considered in 2014, so be sure to stop by and share in the new experiences and programs . You can also follow All Pets Considered on Facebook which features in-store promotions as well as local rescue opportunities with many different organizations. The “Two Paws Up” program will continue to grow in many ways to reach out to the local community in the Triad. In these trying times it is imperative to support local business and rescue organizations. Creating deeper relationships in an effort to end the plight of so many unwanted and neglected animals in our area should resonate with everyone. After all, it takes the community working together to bring about change, we all possess the ability to make this a better world for all creatures great and small.

Dude! This pup is just freaking adorable! Enough said. Actually that is wrong because there is never enough to be said about this amazing 8 monthold labrador retriever mix. I mean, this little guy is pretty impressive. Let’s just say, he gives Chuck Norris all of his jokes. I don’t want to astound you with all of the details, so you will just have to see for yourself. We asked him what he likes most about the holidays and obviously he said food, but he also said he likes spending it with a family just as cool as he is.
This multitalented pup can do it all. Yes, you name it, he can do it! For example, Wizzer can do all kinds of cool stuff like beatbox, cry on command and solve a Rubik’s Cube in just one minute. Ok, well, maybe not yet, but he is working on it! However, this accomplished young mastermind needs a break every now and then. So, he spends hours watching hilarious videos on Vine. Don’t lie, we all do it!

Zory
You have always wanted to travel the world! Am I right? Well, I cannot put it any simpler than this... Auggie is the perfect companion! This 5 month old domestic shorthair cat lives for adventure. He likes to explore new places and learn new things. His curiosity is his best quality. Every night you can find him on the News discussing his latest discoveries. Trust me, you will never have another boring day with this little inquisitive one.
is a little rocket scientist in the making. This 6 month old Lab/Retriever dreamer hopes to be the very first pooch to set paws on the moon. She absolutely loves to relax by the window, counting the stars until she falls deeply into sleep. Zory has always wanted to try camping too because she loves the idea of sitting by a warm fire with her family, sleeping under the night sky and chasing after every single squirrel she can possibly spot with her little eyes.

Sheba, she is a hunter. One of the best around, if you ask me! This 1 year old domestic medium hair feline is the next Katniss Everdeen. Not only is she great with a bow but she is good hearted, intelligent and a tad bit rebellious. Everyday is a new mission. Dont be surprised to find her in the backyard, hidden within the leaves only waiting to capture her very own firefly.
is a unique one. What do I mean by this? Well you see, this 3 month old domestic short hair kitten sees the positive side to everything. She IS the brightest crayon in the box. Her glass is always half full. I mean, until she gets thirsty because then it is all gone. She might be young but she is wise. Oh, but she can be a handful too. For instance, she loves to eat dessert before dinner and listen to music extremely loud. What can I say? A kitty will be a kitty.

A Rescue Story
I
work as a receptionist at a local veterinary hospital. It can be a challenging, yet very rewarding experience, bringing a mixture of surprises, joy and sometimes sadness every day. We do a lot with shelters and rescue dogs, like discount spay/neutering and other services necessary. Every day can bring heartbreaking situations and decisions that require critical thinking tempered with compassion. One day, (happened to be my birthday) a family had just picked up a Beagle from the local shelter. This was the dog’s last day before being euthanized. It’s alway chilling to hear someone’s life is hanging in the balance. This Older Girl had been given a name of Wilma, and she had a large mammary mass tumor. You can see the dreadful appearance of the huge tumor hanging from her belly in the “Before” photo. Our veterinarian removed the tumor and while the dog was there I completely fell in love with her. We spayed her after removing her tumor and found out she had almost been bred to death. You see Wilma was just a “Puppy

Machine”. After a few days of thinking, I decided I wanted Wilma regardless of her health issues. Shortly after getting her, I found out her tumor was breast cancer and could possibly come back. She had a thyroid problem, infected ears and feet, food allergies and she wasn’t potty trained. Her conditions previously to being in the shelter were estimated to be horrendous. When I picked up a broom to sweep, she would run. She hates noises, children scare her, and she is terrified of sudden movements. She had probably spent most of her life in a cage, berift of human contact except for the basic neccessities to keep her alive for breeding. Rescuing Wilma was the best decision of my life. Her cancer could come back any day but I am cherishing the moments with her. Rescuing changes lives and is worth every second. Wilma now is a loving girl, who has a forever home where she is much loved, evident from the “After” photo.

AKC RALLY
by Lois Miller, Carolina Dog Training Club
R
ally is one of the newest AKC companion sports and designed to encourage newcomers to the world of obedience. Rally is fun for both dog and handler, encouraging teamwork and communication between the two. Rally does not require the precise heel work of obedience, but does require a basic knowledge of commands such as “down, sit and stand.” The higher the level of Rally, the more complicated the commands. Handlers have the advantage of talking to their dogs as they encourage them around a course designed by the judge. The courses resemble rally car racing as the teams go from sign to sign within a ring to the finish line. Rally signs are numbered, plus give directions as to how to do the exercise and arrows to indicate which way to navigate. Any dog, purebred or mixbreed, can enjoy the sport as long as they are registered with the AKC, enrolled in the AKC Canine Partners program, enrolled in the PAL/ILP program, or are a member of a Foundation Stock Service recorded breed. Any questions about a dog’s eligibility can be directed to the AKC. Although designed to help those new to obedience, Rally can also be fun and challenging for dogs who already had obedience training, as well as for older dogs who may not have the stamina for sports that require more physical endurance. Rally consists of three levels-Novice, Advanced and Excellent. Teams must qualify in all three levels by scoring 70 points out of a possible 100 at three
40
separate trials under at least two different judges. The runs are timed, but the handler and dog can proceed at their own pace and speed will count only if two people have the same score. Owners can proceed from Novice to Excellent with their dogs obtaining an RN title if they complete the Rally Novice requirements, RA title if they complete the Advanced level and RE title if they complete the Excellent level. If the handler and dog qualify both in Rally Advance and Rally Excellent at the same trial for 10 trials, they can then earn an RAE title. Novice is the beginning level. Courses consist of 10-15 signs which include having the dog sit, stand, move in 360 degree turns, and having the dog heel slow, normal and fast. All exercises are on lead and the handler may clap his hands, use some physical contact and talk to the dog. At the Advanced level, handlers must have their dogs off leash and the exercises are more difficult. The handler may still
January 2014 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
verbally encourage the dog but physical manipulation is not allowed. Jumps that are sized according to the dog’s height are introduced and the dog must learn to stay in heel position as he leaps over the jump and goes on to the next exercise. Excellent is the highest level of Rally and is off leash with only verbal encouragements allowed. More difficult level exercises are included in the course such as heeling backward three steps, hand signals for the sit/down/stand and a figure 8 with distractions. Dogs mastering all the skills necessary for completing the Excellent title will have the skills needed to move on to Novice obedience training. The Carolina Dog Training Club in Greensboro offers Rally classes for all levels of completion. All that is required is a dog and handler who enjoy working together in a fun atmosphere while mastering basic skills. Rally is a fun sport for all ages of people and their dogs and it fosters good communication between owner and companion, resulting in a wonderful lifetime partnership.

It’s cold in Syracuse, New York, and the snow comes early covering the ground and trees with a chilly white blanket. Not a good place to live outside. Sammy found himself at the SPCA again for the second time. The tender age of one found him back at a shelter with no time left. His previous adoptions had failed and he was literally at the end of the line. My Judy had been volunteering at the rescue, but had not planned on going by that day. On a whim, she stopped in to see if she could help. She walked in and was immediately smitten. Barely three pounds, but with soulful eyes and floppy ears, he was there. We all have our ways of expression, but his were in those incredible ears! Those were oversized, always channeling, letting anyone know how he felt. The first few years were trying, as he brought memories of the scars he bore from his previous abuse. It was hard for him to trust again. The seasons passed and with the turning of the world, he began to believe again. Mango
Mango - a sweet, luscious 6/1/13 - 12/13/13 by Courtney Kent
The story of one little kitten who touched so many hearts in her very short lifetime.
O
n June 20, 2013 a nice couple came into Sedgefield Animal Hospital with an adorable 4 week old orange tabby kitten that they had just found. During her initial exam and lab screening the female kitten’s Feline Leukemia test came up positive. The family was devastated and was forced with the decision of what to do next. At this point, we could not determine if the kitten would become sick from the virus or be a risk to other cats. The staff and doctors immediately fell in love with the little orange ball of fur and offered to board the kitten in isolation for two weeks so we could retest her at that time, in hopes that the first test was a false positive. During the next two weeks, the kitten continued to grow and play and from the outside she looked completely healthy. She would zip around her cage, throw her toys in the air and snuggle with some of the staff on their breaks. Two weeks later the

fruit, when ripe, a lovely yellow/orange color. second test was completed and, unfortunately, it was still positive. The couple decided at this point they could not bring her home and put their other kitty at risk. The staff kept the kitten that we had now been affectionately calling “Mango” in isolation and began to contact various feline rescue groups, clients and other people we knew that might be willing to take Mango into their heart and home. Late August rolled around and we still had no home for the sweet girl and her third and final test results had just come back positive. Mango, however, was just oblivious to the fact that she had this virus and was continuing to grow, play and do everything that kittens should get to do. It had now become the time for us to make a plan and be forced with a hard decision. Was it time to humanely euthanize this kitten or what else could we do? It was decided that the staff and doctors could not put her to sleep just yet. We made the decision that while we didn’t know how long she would live, we wanted to do everything we could to insure that she had the happiest life possible. We made the choice to give us a little over three months to find her a home that was safe and appropriate for her to live her life, however long that may be. Just before Thanksgiving Day and one day shy of our three month cut-off, our team member, Bethany had found a possible home! Her Aunt in West Virginia who had experience with cats with Feline Leukemia was willing to open her home to Mango. The staff was thrilled, Mango’s spay surgery was scheduled and Bethany and her family made plans for the transportation and adoption process. During Mango’s pre-anesthetic exam her lab screening came back abnormal. It showed that Mango was severely anemic. Even though she appeared healthy on the outside, the deadly virus was now active and was taking a toll on her body and immune system. The prognosis was extremely grave and humane euthanasia was once again on the discussion table. We were all distraught. Bethany contacted her Aunt, and even with her condition worsening, Bethany’s Aunt still agreed to adopt Mango. Bethany arranged time off and planned
to drive Mango up to her Aunt’s home on New Year’s Eve. Bethany’s mother offered to temporarily foster Mango during the interim and Mango moved out of her quarantine cage into their home on December 6th. The staff cried and cheered over seeing pictures of Mango playing in a big open room for the first time ever. Mango was getting to live her happy life, no matter how short it may be. One week later on December, 13th, Mango started acting unusual. Bethany stopped by her mother’s home to check on her and noticed her breathing was labored. She was rushed back to our hospital and presented in severe respiratory distress. The virus had taken over, she was dying. Surrounded by the staff and doctors, her first true family, we humanely euthanized sweet little Mango. This is the hard part about our job, our patients never live long enough. We treasure each day that Mango was able to live and be a vibrant spunky little kitten. She touched so many of our lives and hearts and we hope by sharing her story that you can help us to stop this virus and other similar ones from spreading. Please spay and neuter your pets. Have your cats and kittens tested and keep all pets current on their yearly recommended vaccinations. Thank you for taking a moment to read Mango’s story.
We will always love you Mango. -The staff and doctors at Sedgefield Animal Hospital

Accent Prone Accents for your home and yourself.
O
wners Justin and Cheri (Bull) Lingafelt have almost doubled their store’s floor size since opening Accent Prone in June 2012. Now shoppers have even more choices when looking for ways to spruce up their own living spaces. “We started with two conjoined spaces and have now added a third space, which has allowed us to double our inventory,” said Justin as he and Cheri sat down to talk about their store’s expanding business. Opening their own business has been a dream in the making for the newlywed couple. They have known each other since middle school, graduated from Glenn High School together and are now building their life together as not only husband and wife but business partners, as well. Both grew up in Kernersville, each with their own unique experience within the business world, something that has made theirs’ a story just as eclectic as Accent Prone. “My dad, Terry Bull, is from Kernersville and owned C. Elliott & Co. jewelry store in Winston-Salem for over 20 years,” explained Cheri. Growing up, she saw early on the time and commitment it takes to make a business successful, and knew she wanted that same opportunity. Cheri studied business at The University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where she developed a business plan that would serve as the model for Accent Prone. While serving a business mentorship with Judy Girard, former president of HGTV, Cheri honed her vision. Cheri also interned for a Wilmington-based furniture store where she received invaluable experience. And time spent abroad in Europe, gave her an appreciation for architecture and different design styles. She went on to graduate with honors from UNCW with a degree in business administration. Justin grew up around the furniture industry and learned a thing or two about sales from his parents. His mother designed and managed showrooms, Justin figures he attended his first High Point market when he was six years old. He later studied marketing and entrepreneurship at North Carolina State University and has widely traveled working in showroom management and sales. “Because of my experience over the years, I know furniture from the manufacturing side,” said Justin. He still keeps up-to-date on the latest trends in furniture products and styles even before they hit the mainstream market. It was literally by accident that they stumbled across their business name, “Accent Prone.” With countless names scribbled on pages of paper and none to their liking, Cheri said “accident prone” by mistake, which laughingly lead to Accent Prone. It stuck. “The name was quirky and described exactly what we are,” said Cheri. “Literally everything in our store is an accent, from accent chests, to chairs, to end tables, scarves, handbags and more. Accents for your home and yourself!” It definitely won’t be the same thing twice. “The store is constantly changing. We get in full truck loads each week,” explained Cheri. The couple specialize in offering their customers unique accent furniture samples bought directly

from High Point Furniture Market showrooms. All are one-of-akind pieces designed to accent one’s existing home furnishings. “It’s all current stuff that you won’t see in the big box store,” said Justin. “They’re more unique pieces, from modern contemporary to traditional,” said Cheri. “We have everything from contemporary to shabby chic. It’s very eclectic and really something for everyone.” Accent Prone doesn’t offer large furniture sets, but does have a wide range of what Cheri likes to call collections. “With accents you don’t have to spend a lot of money, and here you can get a lot more bang for your buck,” said Justin. Accent Prone is located at 1030-F South Main St. Kernersville NC 27284. Located in front of the Target Shopping center, in the strip center between the Subway and Loop Pizza Grill. Store hours are Mon.-Fri. 10am-7pm Sat.10am-6pm, Sun. closed. Follow Accent Prone on Facebook for daily updates on new inventory and design tips! Contact them at 336-310-4753 or info@accentprone.com.
