FROM THE EDITORS Winter seems to come and go daily, one day it’s 60º, the next day it’s snowing! We humans cannot make sense of it, so imagine how animals and plants must feel. Let’s not forget to feed the birds and try make sure every creature has a warm dry place in which to find shelter. Wild animals can usually find a protected spot, but domestic animals chained or fenced in a space with no shelter are at the mercy of the elements. I had a call from a neighbor who knew someone living next to a dog outside, without benefit of anyplace to escape the cold and rain. It is up to all of us to try and help when we see this type of sad situation. Project B.A.R.K offers free housing for dogs and cats and will tactfully contact the owners with an offer to help. If you do see something like this, you may contact them at http://projectbark.org/. We are thrilled to have an excellent article in the March issue about a program initiated in Moore County that works with 4th. graders. It’s called Teaching Kids to Care. There is a pilot program at Alderman School in Greensboro modeled after the Moore County Program. Please take a minute to look the article over and volunteer if you have a little free time. It starts with the children and spreads to the rest of the family. Ask the Vet this month gives some practical advice for non-traditional pet owners. More people are including exotic pets in their families and

can find some useful information. We are so thankful our veterinarians take their valuable time and provide our readDeb Printup Jennifer Frazier ers with these terrific articles. This month’s Training Column discusses AKC Obedience and Rally Trials which are no longer just for purebred dogs. If you would like to take your dog to a new level of obedience training, considering participating in these events coming up on March 16th and 17th. Our third year anniversary will be coming up in July. In celebration, we would like to offer something a little different to our readers. We are holding our first ever Cover Model Search! Some lucky rescue will receive the July cover and an article about their transition from being homeless to a loving forever home. Teaching Kids to Care

Bringing Moore County’s Innovative Pet Responsibility Program to Guilford County by Ruby Westcoat

here’s a sad problem in North Carolina and throughout the Southeast. It’s pet over-population, and it leads to animal neglect, abuse, abandonment, and high euthanasia rates at animal shelters. The problem often seems so sad and overwhelming that many of us would prefer to avoid thinking about it. Concerned animal lovers in Moore County have decided to address the pet overpopulation crisis through education. Volunteer teachers of the Moore County Citizens’ Pet Responsibility Committee present the situation to 4th graders in a way that gets them excited about being part of the solution. In a series of six 45-minute lessons, students learn what it means to be responsible pet owners, how to keep themselves and their animals safe and healthy, and how to educate their family and friends about taking responsible care of pets. Special emphasis is placed on the importance of having animals spayed or neutered in order to prevent pet over-population. Unfortunately, Guilford County is all too familiar with the problem of pet over-population and the suffering it causes, and it’s not just animals that are affected. Pet over-population and neglect create health and quality of life issues for people as well, especially children. The risk of dog bites increases in neighborhoods with large numbers of unwanted pets, and witnessing neglect and cruelty towards animals can have real and lasting emotional impacts. Inspired by the Moore County Citizens’ Pet Responsibility Committee, volunteers in Guilford County are launching their own pilot Pet Responsibility program for 4th graders. In March, Vanessa Kearney and Jeffery Williamson of Merit Pit Bull Foundation will teach the first classes at Alderman Elementary School in Greensboro, with Officer Loflin of Guilford County Animal Control as a guest speaker. The Pet Responsibility Curriculum was developed by Angela Zumwalt and Pam Partis in 2006. After trying several approaches to tackling the pet overpopulation crisis in Moore County, The program is currently being taught by volunteers they decided to in every 4th grade classroom in Moore County. Volunteers who teach the Pet Responsibility Curriculum in Moore County come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Some are animal shelter volunteers, animal welfare advocates, kennel club members, or therapy dog trainers. Others are parents, veterans, or retirees who want to help animals and children. What draws them all to the program is the idea that kids can learn to be sensitive, responsible pet owners, and help improve conditions for animals in their own communities. The Pet Responsibility Committee’s remarkable program has begun to attract attention statewide. In 2012, the group received the Governor’s Award for Volunteer Service, and at the request of the NC Department of Agriculture they ran a workshop about their program for organizations from all over the state. The group is very generous about sharing their curriculum, and several other North Carolina counties have started their own Pet Responsibility programs based on the Moore County model. Burlington Pet Adoption Center Myths and Facts About Spaying and Neutering By Laura Michel

sk any animal shelter worker and they will tell you that with the arrival of spring comes an increase in unwanted puppies and kittens. Also known as “puppy and kitty season,” it is the time of year when shelters experience a large influx of animals compared to other times of the year. For the months of April, May and June in 2012, Burlington Animal Services took in two to three times the number of strays and owner surrendered puppies and kittens as compared to the other three quarters of 2012. Sadly, many end up being euthanized due to a lack of space. We may sound like a broken record, but spaying and neutering really is the most effective means of controlling the pet overpopulation problem. As we have learned, you cannot adopt your way out of this problem. Ultimately, it is every pet

owner’s responsibility to do their part to help eliminate unwanted litters. Doing so helps the entire community. Yet, so many pet owners use common and unfounded excuses to not get their pets fixed. Most of these excuses are based on myths that need to be eliminated once and for all. So let’s dispel these myths with the facts:

MYTH It is better to allow a female dog or cat to have one litter before being spayed.

FACT Medical evidence shows just the opposite. Spaying before the first heat cycle, around 6 months of age, will eliminate uterine and ovarian disease, and greatly reduce the incidence of breast cancer. Females that are spayed early tend to be healthier and to live longer. Additionally, heat cycles lasting a week or longer can cause females to cry incessantly, exhibit nervous behavior, make A084308 them quite uncomfortable and attract unwanted males. Dogs can have two cycles a year and cats can have three or more.

Problems with aggression, marking territory (spraying strong-smelling urine on surfaces inside and outside the home), roaming (getting out to look for a mate) and fighting can often be avoided or eliminated entirely by neutering at an early age.

MYTH Spaying or neutering will make my dog less protective. FACT Removing a dog’s reproductive organs will have no effect on its natural protective instinct. A dog’s personality and instinct are formed primarily by its environment and genetic makeup rather than its sex hormones.

MYTH Spaying or neutering my pet will make it become fat and lazy. FACT Absolutely false! Overfeeding and a lack of exercise are what will make your pet fat and lazy.

books, videos and other resources that teach about birth. It is a better choice to teach your children about why it is important to spay or neuter pets and about being a responsible pet owner.

MYTH I can’t afford this surgery. FACT The cost to spay or neuter a pet can vary depending on size, sex, type of animal, etc. Regardless of the actual cost, it is a onetime fee that will eliminate potentially larger expenses associated with having litters, treating expensive illnesses, damage to your home and furnishings from marking, etc. In addition to the many veterinary hospitals in the Triad, there are several low-cost clinics including the Spay and Neuter Clinic of Alamance County that offer this service.

MYTH I will find good homes for the puppies or kittens.

FACT Yes, you may very well find homes for the entire litter. But for each one you find, that will be one less home for a shelter animal. MYTH I would rather purchase a purebred from a breeder. It will be healthier than a shelter pet.

FACT Spending $250 to $1,500 or more is no guarantee you will get a better or healthier pet. Many purebred pets come into animal shelters every day. While no shelter can guarantee the health of their pets any more than a breeder can, most shelters do health and behavior screenings before putting pets up for adoption. And when you adopt a shelter pet, purebred or mixed breed, you are getting a wonderful companion and you are doing your part to help reduce pet overpopulation! If these facts don’t convince you, consider these numbers from the Humane Society of the United States. One unspayed female cat and all her unaltered offspring can produce over 420,000 kittens in 7 years. One unspayed female dog and her unaltered offspring can produce 67,000 in a 6-year period. These animals are quite prolific! One final consideration is the impact pet

overpopulation has on the community. With overpopulation comes an increase in the demand for animal control services as well as an increase in the resources and expenses associated with operating a shelter. In most communities, these expenses are funded with your tax dollars. Lastly, there is an increase in rabies exposure and disease that can affect people and animals. Burlington Animal Services’ Spay and Neuter Clinic of Alamance County is working hard to reduce the number of unwanted animals that come to our shelter each year. Our clinic has performed over 2,100 spay/neuter surgeries in the past two years operating two days a week. This spring we are adding a third day to our schedule and will be open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please be a responsible pet owner. If your dog or cat has not been spayed or neutered, call the Spay and Neuter Clinic of Alamance County at 336-570-6767 to schedule an appointment. The clinic is located at 1919 S. Church Street in Burlington and it is a low-cost alternative that provides the highest level of care with a professional and experienced staff. Fees range from $50 to $90, depending on the type and gender of pet, and include general anesthesia, antibiotics and pain medication to ensure your pet’s care and comfort. I have a pet rabbit that is 5 yrs. old and suddenly seems to be getting very “poochy” in the abdomen. She is still very playful, could something be wrong? Exotic animals (ferrets, rabbits, rats, mice, guinea pigs, chinchillas, fish, frogs, lizards and turtles) can also develop tumors (cancer) just like cats and dogs. Female exotic pets can develop ovarian tumors and uterine tumors that can be fatal. Spaying and neutering these pets can help prevent these types of tumors. They can also develop splenic tumors, intestinal tumors, and other types of abdominal mass. We recommend that your pet have a yearly exam just like we recommend for your cats and dogs.

I have a pet turtle that I have had for years. The shell seems to be getting a little soft, is this a problem?

I have an award winning Koi that has developed a large mass on one of its eyes. What can I do?

Turtles require sunlight (Vit. D) and calcium to maintain a healthy shell. Even water turtles require being out of the water and basking in sunlight. Often pet stores will sell drops, food etc. that promises to help with these issues : THEY DO NOT. You must provide unfiltered sunlight or use a VitaLite Reptile Light to provide the necessary UV rays that will provide Vit. D. Calcium comes from the food you provide, you can call us and we will gladly fax, email or consult with you on proper nutrition. These pets also should be checked yearly.

I have a rat that is 3 years old, the fur has suddenly started falling off. What is the problem? If veterinarians had a crystal ball, we would gladly answer these questions over the phone. In reality, we often advise the owners to bring the pet for a check up, the reason is that some symptoms could represent any number of diseases. It is always to the benefit of the pet and owner to do an exam because that will often help the veterinarian to better determine what the health problem is with the pet. Not all veterinarians see reptiles and amphibians so make sure the vet you call treats them.

Koi like any other pet, can develop eye issues and other problems just like any one else. We are able to do exams on fish, Dr. Cowan has taken many courses on fish care and has done surgery on numerous fish. Once again, we recommend that an owner bring their pet to the veterinarian to have a physical exam done when the owner perceives a problem or an issue. I have a bird that seems to be “nesting,” what should I do? Birds can develop numerous habits that can cause distress to the owners. The females can reach maturity and start laying eggs, even without a male. We always recommend an exam when your pet starts exhibiting strange or unusual behavior.

His damaged eye does not affect his ability to do all the normal things a cat can do! Callie came to ARSC as a stray who was roaming the streets in Walnut Cove. She has turned into a wonderful dog who did not even know what a ball was and now carries one around in her mouth all the time! She loves to play ball and it is a requirement every day even when Animal Rescue of Stokes County it is raining or snowing! She is very pleasing and does not bark much. It took her a while to trust us but now she loves everyone that comes to visit. She is just over 2 years old and is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm negative and on monthly preventative, microchipped and monthly Frontline Plus. These seven sheep were recently surrendered to Red Dog Farm when their owners could no longer care for them. They were well cared for before coming to us. They will come up to you for treats and are about as tame as sheep get. There are six males and one female. The males are five years old and all have been castrated. They are Katahdin/Suffolk mixes so they will need to be sheared each spring.

was found at just two weeks old by a very nice family who took him home and nursed him until they realized they weren’t prepared to keep a dog long term. So Ada came to Red Dog Farm at just 5 weeks of age. He is still a little young to determine what mix he is but our best guess is a Terrier mix. He was found alone without mom or any siblings. Therefore, his foster mom and furry foster siblings are working on teaching him some basic manners of what acceptable behavior is and what it is not. Precious is a sweet black and tan, small tweenie Dachshund. The vet estimates that she is 10 to 12 years old though her foster mom thinks she looks much younger. Precious cannot tell us her life story, but we think it may have been Almost Home a sad one. A slight spine curvature Dachshund Rescue and funny little gait to her walk means she may have been raised inside a cage where she was left for long periods of time. Thankfully, whatever she suffered in her prior life doesn’t bother this pretty lady today. There hasn’t been a person yet who Precious won’t love all over, she lives to please her people. Precious would be wonderful with respectful children and other fun loving four-legged family members, including cats.

AKC Obedience & Rally Trials No Longer Just for Purebred Dogs by Pat Muhammad, Carolina Dog Training Club

very year in mid March, Carolina Dog Training Club holds a 2-day Obedience trial and a Rally trial. CDTC has been putting on yearly trials for over 50 years and up until about 5 years ago, the only dogs that could be entered in either trial were purebred dogs. However, with more people adopting their new dog from rescue groups and shelters, the AKC has now created an opportunity for these dogs to compete too! Depending on your situation, you can obtain two different AKC registrations: (1) Purebred Alternative Listing/Indefinite Listing Privilege (PAL/ILP). This program allows unregistered dogs of registrable breeds to compete in AKC companion events. Visit AKC.org for requirements and to download the required application. (2) AKC Canine PartnersSM program. This program is for ALL dogs, including mixed-breeds and dogs that are not eligible for AKC registration. All dogs in the AKC Canine PartnersSM program must be spayed or neutered. Visit AKC.org for requirements and to download the required application. Obedience trials offer a way to take your dog’s training to a whole new level. These trials involve several different levels in which dogs must follow their handler’s commands, however, there is no talking to your dog during obedience exercises. The NOVICE level involves heeling on and off leash, a figure 8, a recall, a stand for examination, sit stays and down stays. The OPEN level involves these same exercises along with dumbbell retrieval, jumping, and out-of-site sit stays and down stays. Most exercises are done off leash. The UTILITY level involves heeling, directed retrieval, directed jumping, scent discrimination, all being done off leash. In obedience the judge tells you when to do each exercise. Rally also has several different levels and was designed with the pet owner in mind. It’s a great way for your dog to enter the world of sports and offers challenges in every level. The handler and their dog work as a team in following signs such as 360 degree turns, sits, downs, left turns, right turns, about turns and weaving around cones. The signs are numbered to make it easy to find the next station. The handlers are allowed to encourage their dogs by talking to them. All this is timed just in case there is a tie in the scores. In the NOVICE level all exercises are done with the dog on leash and consists of 10 to 15 signs. The ADVANCED level is performed off leash with 12 to 17 stations and includes a jump. The highest level is EXCELLENT and includes 15 to 20 stations. In Rally the judge tells the handler when to start and the handler must follow the signs at their own pace in order to complete the course. The team must receive 3 qualifying scores under 2 different judges to receive a rally title before moving on to the next level. The benefits of obedience and rally trials are immeasurable. They reinforce good behavior in your dog, helping him or her to become more obedient whether in the home or out in public. These trials can be fun, yet challenging, offering a wonderful bonding experience for you and your pet. All this being said, please join CDTC at our March 16th and 17th Obedience and Rally trials. Obedience trials will be held from 9am to 1pm both days, while Rally trials will be from 1-5pm on March 16th only. Remember that you must have some kind of AKC registration number in order to enter our trials or any other AKC trials. Gentle Giant Peggy McLeod Shares Her Story of Her Great Pyrenees Rescue

oughly five years ago, Kernersville resident Peggy McLeod, helped give an abused Great Pyrenees, named Baron Von Lucky, a new home after adopting him from the Carolina Great Pyrenees Rescue. McLeod said Baron was five-years-old when she adopted him. She stated that what brought her to pursuing a rescue was the loss of her former dog, Lucky. “I had lost my Newfoundland, Lucky, from cancer six weeks before,” she said. McLeod noted that she was very sad and had trouble getting out of bed due to the loss of her very close friend. “One morning, it was like something pushed me to get out of bed and look up Great Pyrenees (on the Internet). A site came up and I filled out an application,” she said. McLeod explained that once on the website, she had to fill out the application before she could go any further. After filling out the application, she said she received a phone call the next day from the Carolina Great Pyrenees Rescue in Winston-Salem. “After completing a background and veterinarian check on me, they called me back a few days later and told me I was a candidate (for adoption),” she said. McLeod explained that the Carolina Great Pyrenees Rescue informed her of how Baron had been rescued from an abusive situation. “He had been tethered with a wire on his back right leg and was being starved to death,” she said. “He was so determined to live that he chewed the wire around his leg to break free and unfortunately it destroyed his bottom teeth.” McLeod noted that when the rescue found Baron, he was only 60 pounds. “He also had heartworms and parasites, and his fur was matted to his skeleton,” she said. She explained that when she first saw him, he had gained 14 pounds and had been cleaned up by the rescue. “He was small and slim. His fur was healing back, but you could tell it wasn’t healthy hair yet. That was in 2009,” she said. “When I first met him he was not ready to be adopted yet because he had just finished with his heartworm treatment. “When Baron came through the door to meet McLeod for the first time, he bounded toward her, put his head in her lap and then looked up at her as if to say, “I’m in here, Mom.” McLeod said she felt as if her former Newfoundland had found his way back to her through Baron. McLeod adopted Baron the next day. She noted that the Great Pyrenees breed is very intelligent. everything on the test. He knows both hand signals and voice commands,” she said. McLeod explained that Baron works as a therapy dog and goes everywhere with her. “He has a little girl that reads to him and he goes into nursing homes. We had a man speak for the first time (in a long time) after Baron walked up to him and put his head in his lap,” she said. McLeod explained that Great Pyrenees are great dogs for any family. “They are so loving and good natured. They are wonderful for children, babies, elderly and other animals,” she said. “They’re known as gentle giants.” She explained that Baron is so well natured that he is able to help her when she is training dogs that are aggressive. “Baron will walk up to them as they approach him and if they start to show aggression, he puts his head down and pushes against them as to say, ‘We don’t do that,’” she said. McLeod said that type of approach is effective because dogs have a better perspective of their own K9 group. She stated that Great Pyrenees are pretty much just large couch potatoes. “He runs about 10-20 minutes a day and the rest of the time, he just lays around,” she said. McLeod explained that not only do Great Pyrenees make great companions, their fur can be woven into yarn called Chiengora. “After brushing Baron, I send his fur off to a lady in Jamestown who spins it and knits it. I have a beautiful scarf made out of his fur,” she said. Baron is now very healthy and weighs 134 lbs., which McLeod said is the average size of the breed. “Lately we’ve been running across some petite (Great) Pyrenees females and they are usually 70-80 lbs.,” she said. McLeod explained that the breed was originally bred to serve as livestock guardian dogs in the Pyrenees Mountains of southern France and northern Spain. “In the Pyrenees Mountains, they were bred to be guardians over sheep and goats. I’ve seen people around here use them to guard their chickens, ducks, alpacas, sheep and goats,” she stated. McLeod said they celebrated Baron’s birthday on August 1 when he turned eight-years old. “I took him to the mountains for his birthday. He likes to play in the water. He would bite the water and throw it around. I also baked him a cake made with chicken, shredded carrots, soy flour, eggs, flax seed oil and iced it with plain low fat yogurt,” she said. he rain fell full force. The little black terrier scurried through the slowly moving traffic trying to avoid being hit for a second time. Drivers were not watching for the small dog and the pouring rain made the roadways slick as ice. Car horns honked loudly expressing their displeasure with the current road conditions. The wet dog was limping. Her left front leg was badly mangled. A week ago a small silver sports car had come speeding around a street corner hitting her left side and sending her flying onto the grassy embankment. She lay there for the longest time. The driver had not stopped and no one had helped her. The pain was excruciating. But she knew that she had to keep going. She knew she had to get out of the rain and back to her hiding place under the culvert before nightfall. In one of the cars was Robbie Summerfield and his father, John. They were returning from their weekly trip to the doctor’s office. “Look!” Robbie exclaimed to his dad, “Look at that cute little black dog running through the traffic. I wonder if it has a home?” As the light turned green Robbie’s father answered, “I don’t think it would be out in the rain or this five o’clock traffic if it did. I’d pull over but there’s just too much traffic.” Weeks ago the little dog had been pregnant. None of her pups survived. All had been stillborn. She had not had enough nourishment to carry her through the gestation period. In actuality, she had all she could do to forage a meal for herself. And it was becoming more and more difficult for her to do so. Steel garbage cans had locking lids. And she was just too small to go dumpster-diving for all of the best throw-away food. Yet she still managed to prevail. The China Express on Main Street was one of her most fulfilling spots. The plastic containers were easy to get into and often she could find a variety of partially-eaten Chinese dinner combinations. Her favorite was the pork eggrolls which she relished dearly. They kept her going. Her drinking water

came from the stream near the culvert where she slept at night. It was always fresh and relatively clean for a small body of water. As Robbie and his father pulled into the driveway at their home, Robbie said to him, “You know, Dad, in a couple of weeks it will be my tenth birthday. Can I get a dog, huh, can I, huh? I really want one. And I promise I will take care of it.” “You know, Son, a dog is a BIG responsibility. You have to feed it, walk it, and groom it. Do you really think you are going to be old enough to do all that?” “I will, Dad, I will. I promise. We could go to the shelter and give one of those homeless dogs a good home. I really, really want one.” “We’ll see,” Robbie’s father said as the two of them ran through the rain into their house. It continued to pour down on the little black dog as she approached her Chinese eatery looking for an evening meal. Instead she encountered a very tall man waiting by the garbage cans. In his hands he held a long metal pole with a loop of string on one end. She had never seen a contraption like this before but she had a bad feeling about it. The man smiled and called out to her holding a scrumptious eggroll in his hands. She was very afraid but she was also very hungry. She inched her way toward the man and the treat. Before she realized what was happening the loop was around her neck pulling tightly and she could not escape. The man grabbed her up and threw her into a cage in the back of a large white truck. She watched through the metal bars as her favorite eating spot disappeared in the distance. At the shelter the resident veterinarian took a long look at the little dog’s left front leg. “We’re going to have to take this off,” the vet said to the tech. “She’ll get gangrene if we don’t. It’s the only way to save her. And she’s such a cute little dog. I’m sure, somehow, we’ll be able to find someone to adopt her.” Two weeks later Robbie reminded his father that his birthday was fast approaching. “I STILL would REALLY, REALLY like to get a dog,” he reiterated to his father. “And I promise I’ll take good care of it. And it will be a great playmate for me!”

“Okay, okay,” John said to his son, “We’ll go to the shelter tomorrow. Just to look, mind you. And we’ll see what’s available.” The next morning they arrived at the local animal shelter. The cacophony of dog barking echoed throughout the expanse of the aging building. Annie Pratt, the clerk on duty, told Robbie to go down the hall where all of the pens were to have a look. “Son, you go on ahead. I’ll be there in a few minutes,” John said to him. The fluorescent lights gave an unappealing graygreen cast to the room making it difficult to view the dogs. Chain link fencing with archaic latching gates lined the corridor walkway. The adoptable dogs were confined within. Robbie eased his way down the long hall, looking both to the right and to the left. Dogs would leap up at him on the other side of the fencing, hoping to be the one he selected. Barking was non-stop, continuing every step of the way. At the very next kennel on the right Robbie spied a little black dog. She had only three legs. He called to her and she came closer to the gate. Robbie braced his crutches against the fencing. He had lost a part of his left leg to cancer and he knew all too well what it was like to have a handicap. He knelt in front of the gate reaching through it to pet the little dog. Annie and his father were now standing next to him. “Are you sure, Robbie? Are you really sure that she’s the dog you want?” John asked his son. “Yeah, Dad, I AM. I’m gonna treat her just like a regular dog. She can run and play with me and we’ll have a great time together.” “Robbie, you know it truly takes a lot of heart when you show me your ability to look past her disability, just the same way you look past yours.” Annie leashed the little dog and let her out of the kennel. She immediately ran right into Robbie’s waiting arms. Robbie hugged the small dog, while at the same time scratching her behind her ears. “And you’re mine now. I’m gonna take good care of you, little girl. I think I’m gonna call you... Sadie. You’ll have a great new home,” Robbie said, staring into the little dog’s big brown eyes. “My Sadie. My Sadie Summerfield.” Together they walked from the shelter into the parking lot -two handicapped souls joined together by their love.
