FROM THE PUBLISHERS

W

e all have something to be thankful for every day. This time of year is a good time to reflect on how lucky we are to live in a society where we can say what we feel, enjoy a comfortable lifestyle and live our lives the way we wish without fear of reprisal. The fact that some people in parts of the world do not even have clean drinking water or food for their children should give us pause to be thankful for what we have. It is our hope we can all look inside ourselves and share our bounty with the ones, who through no fault of their own, have so little, including the ones who cannot speak for themselves. Our shelters and rescues are filled with discarded souls who did not ask to be born into a life of misery and neglect. We should all ask ourselves what we can do as compassionate beings to help change their world and create a better future for all creatures. We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to their plight. It is time to

speak out and make a difference! At a time of year when there is an overflowing bounty, so many go unloved and ignored. Look inside your hearts and make Deb Printup Jennifer Frazier an effort to support the local groups in providing food, shelter and love to the unwanted and forgotten. But the real power of change is in supporting laws that protect the innocent. We must work to put laws into place that require spay/neuter, restrict and inspect backyard breeders, prohibit tethering and tougher punishment for animal cruelty and neglect. Please get involved, everyone counts and everyone can make a difference. We need to share our bounty, we are all part of this world and we all need each other. Happy Thanksgiving!

ON THE COVER: Originally adopted in November 2012 and returned 6 months later because of medical issues, Reesie has been in foster care since April 2013 when she underwent double eye surgery. It was later determined that she needed additional surgery to repair a luxating patella. After several months of crate rest, numerous gastrointestinal issues and unresolved leg issues, Reesie’s “wild, but loving personality” has won the hearts of her foster family. We just learned, she will stay with her foster family. “Absolutely animated, continuously happy and Perfectly Reesie, she makes me smile everyday,” says Melissa Ball, her foster Mom. But, there are many more animals at FCAC that need good homes, please contact them. For information about adopting any of the other animals in the cover story contact: Forsyth County Animal Control at 336-703-3647 or online at www.co.forsyth.nc.us/animalcontrol.

Cover Story

How Do You Like Us Now? By: Melissa Ball, Project Pearl

W

hen you meet shelter animals, you easily fall in love. Unfortunately many of the animals I meet at Forsyth County Animal Control are not candidates for adoption because of existing medical issues. As a county run shelter, treating animals for long term medical needs or surgery is not an option. All the animals in Project Pearl’s foster program have their own story, but their simple commonality: without the Project Pearl foster program they would not have had a chance. Since April 2012, Project Pearl has medically treated and fostered nearly 300 animals. Here are some of their stories. “Perfectly Reesie” “So, you’ll schedule surgery next week?” “I don’t know. If it was my personal dog, yes, but I need to think about what to do in this case.” Reesie. I remember when she originally came to the shelter in October 2012. She was 6 months old and trying to get her to sit still was exasperating. “Did you get it?” I asked the photographer. “No. Lets try something else.” Finally, in a split second, she flopped down, her head tilted, the camera clicked and the photo was captured. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think Reesie would enter my life again. But she did. Six months later. 12

Reesie’s original puppy photo, courtesy of DesiLu Photography Reesie was returned with red, stained and swollen eyes.

“Did you see Reesie was returned?” Looking at her through the kennel run her body continuously moving, I instantly noticed her eyes: red, stained and swollen. “Hey sweetie, what’s going on? Why did they bring you back?” Endless motion and entirely happy, a term I would later refer to as “Perfectly Reesie”. Perpetual motion on a single slip leash and overly excited, she had to be sedated for a thorough vet examination. Conclusion: entropy surgery was needed. Although recovery time was minimal: 10-14 days, I had no foster. The reality, back at the shelter dozens of high-energy dogs without medi-

cal issues weren’t finding homes. I left the room defeated and sad. As I loaded her into my car I watched her body lay down. The rear view mirror image of her curled up, as though she had never ridden in a car, made my heart melt. For the first time, I saw her body quiet - as though she was defeated too. I took her back to the shelter, wrote “PP Foster” on her kennel card and scheduled surgery the next day. Still recovering in foster, Reesie has gone through extensive medical care since April 2013, including treatment for a stomach ulcer, entropy and patella surgery.

“Everything Ellie!” Ellie was seized by animal control officers for cruelty. Her underweight body so severely covered with mange and open sores I wasn’t sure she would pull through. Carrying her through the kennel and loading her up in the car, I was reminded how thankful I am for the animals that are seized by animal control officers for neglect. Daily medication and baths are needed to restore what took months of neglect and suffering. Ellie is being monitored for a heart murmur, secondary skin infections and Demodex mange. At the time of this Ellie’s body was covered with mange and open sores, article Ellie’s case is still under active investigation. we weren’t sure she’d survive. Look at her now!

November 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

“Blossoming Flower” Flower came to FCAC as another cruelty case confiscation. Her body score was a 1. The lowest an animal can receive and so emaciated she could not stand without assistance. Treated for numerous bacterial and skin infections, Lyme and heartworm disease, Flower was in our foster program for 4 months getting specialized care and medical treatment. Flower was adopted in June 2013 and is living a very full life. The department charged Flower’s previous owner with cruelty to animals. “Perfecting Pearl(ie)” In February 2013 Pearlie came to FCAC as an emaciated stray with her 7 puppies. She tested positive for heartworm disease and was ineligible for the FCAC adoption program. Once her puppies were weaned and her body strong enough, Pearlie went through heartworm treatment. She was lovingly adopted by her foster family. “Amazing Ava” Ava came to the shelter as a stray and did not pass her medical evaluation because of

Demodex mange. Correctable, this form of mange is not contagious, but can take several months to treat. Since space is limited at open admission shelters, Ava’s only choice was our foster program.

Ava came in suffering from Demodex mange, not contageous, but takes months to treat. As you can see, she is recovering nicely.

Project Pearl works exclusively in partnership with Forsyth County Animal Control. Dozens of animals each week enter the shelter with medical issues that make them unable to enter the county adoption program. Since December 2012, we have helped over a dozen animals with heartworm disease, two emergency leg amputations, numerous surgeries, including emergency C-sections and close to 20 cases of mange. Nearly a hundred puppies and kittens that were too young for adoptions; some only days old and needing to be bottle fed, were given a chance by being fostered. In the past year alone, we have spent close to $20,000 in medical costs. Project Pearl pays for 100% of foster animals’ medical care and dona-

tions are appreciated. We are grateful for the community involvement, which allows our organization to medically help the animals in our program. Personally, I am thankful to FCAC for partnering with us for over two years and to the doctors and staff at Clemmons Veterinary Clinic for helping us with our foster animals. For more information about Project Pearl, volunteering at FCAC and our foster program, please visit our webpage at: projectpearlnc.org or “like” us on Facebook at: Project Pearl.

Shadow.

Pumpkin and Spice.

Look at this adorable little pocket kitty! This sweet baby was found in the road, just barely avoiding the cars. A volunteer scooped her up and brought her to us, where we started her on fluids and a bottle. Luckily, little Miss Shadow was a fighter! Her personality is much bigger than her body, and we imagine she will grow up to be a bit of a diva! Shadow just loves to cuddle up in a warm lap or chase her little furry mice. This girl could be your next best friend!

Aren’t these two adorable? Pumpkin and Spice were found by an NCDOT worker in a box on the highway! She brought them to her office to warm up and started looking for a place to bring them. Now how could we have said no to these two little orange fluff balls? These sisters are very playful and inquisitive. Their favorite times of day are nap time and meal time! They get along great with other animals and adore all people.

For information call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n

Cookie, Slate and Charcoal This mom and kitten trio came to us hungry and scared. Now, they are all so loving and outgoing! The momma cat (Cookie) loves to snuggle up for naps, while her two kittens play and play! Cookie is a very relaxed and sweet lap kitty, while her two babies are much more full of energy and they will keep you laughing. Add some zen to your life and adopt Cookie, or add some laughs to your life and adopt these two purr-fect kittens! For information call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n

Coltrane is a

Cherry.

We have featured Cherry before, but here she is in case you missed her! This is her “Oh, please pick me!” face! Cherry is a 1-2 year old Boston Terrier/American Pit Bull Terrier mix. She is house-trained, loves dogs and cats (she lives with three other dogs from small to large!), and has really done well with her beginning commands. She is very loyal and smart, and she loves to cuddle up in bed at night for an 8 hour snooze! Adopt Cherry! For information call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n

Jack and Sally were named

4 month old American Pit Bull Terrier pulled from a rural shelter. He came to us a little skinny and flea-ridden, but that all cleared up quickly! Now, he is a healthy little bundle of joy and energy! Coltrane loves other animals, dogs and cats! He is deaf and looks to his human at all times for direction. He is learning hand signals very quickly and he seems to be a highly intelligent boy. Adopt Coltrane for a life-long best buddy!!

after the main characters from A Nightmare Before Christmas! We found their black and orange colors to be just perfect for Halloweenthemed names. These two are so playful and they love to be together, so we will want them to go to the same home. It’s not often you find a sibling pair bonded like these two! Jack and Sally are couch kitties when they aren’t playing, preferring to sit in a lap. If you’re looking for love, Jack and Sally are the perfect pair!

Kelly Barker, DVM Dr. Barker has received a Bachelors degree in Psychology from Elon University, a Bachelors degree in Animal Science from North Carolina Agriculture and Technical University. She completed her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. Dr. Barker loves every aspect of medicine. She is a member of the AVMA and the NCVMA. Dr. Barker followed in her father’s footsteps

becoming a second generation veterinarian. She gained years of essential experience assisting her father in his veterinary practice in Eden, NC during high school and college. Dr. Barker has given many lost “babies” a better life, including fifteen cats and a Greyhound, Magie “MooCow” who was adopted her last year in veterinary school. She enjoys spending time with her “babies”, friends, and family. She is excited to join the GuilfordJamestown Veterinary Hospital team!!

Heartworm Disease: Prevention is the Key! As a practicing veterinarian, I have found there are many infections/ disease processes that CANNOT be prevented, however, heartworm disease is one of the few that CAN be prevented. In my quest to provide the best medical/preventative care, I have come to realize that many pet owners do not understand how heartworm disease occurs, therefore fail to understand how easily this disease can be prevented. This article is designed to help pet owners understand the disease process and inform them of the many choices in heartworm prevention today.

Q A

How does the heartworm cycle begin? The formation of heartworms in the lung vessels of your pet takes 7-9 months and begins when a mosquito becomes infected while taking a blood meal from an animal that has already developed heartworm disease (usually domesticated or wild canines). That same mosquito then bites your pet and injects the baby heartworms (larvae) into its body. The larvae travel through the body until they reach the vessels around the lungs. Here they camp out and grow until they take up all the space in the lung vessels and spread out into the heart. At this point, your pet may be showing symptoms of heartworm disease (coughing, exercise intolerance, difficulty breathing when excited). REMEMBER, this takes 7-9 months!!

Q A

So why is prevention important? If your pet is taking his/her monthly heartworm prevention or receiving an injection of ProHeart every 6 months, and gets bit by that pesky little infected mosquito, the prevention will kill all of the larvae that might be circulating at that time. Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent your pet from getting bitten by the mosquito, so it is VERY important to give monthly or biannual heartworm medication. A yearly heartworm test is ALWAYS recommended to make sure your heartworm medication is working properly.

Q A

But Doc, my pet lives in the city and doesn’t go outside much. I have lived in many areas of North Carolina, from the coast to the mountains to the city and even rural areas and not any one of these areas were FREE of mosquitos. I will say that there are times of the year that mosquitos are more aggressive, but even in the cooler months, I still hear the mosquitos buzzing in my ears. To those who live in the cities, I have actually seen mosquitos hovering at my door when I open it during all times of the year, just waiting for the opportunity to fly inside in search for a good meal. NO matter where you live or how careful you think you are, that pesky mosquito is waiting for a chance to bite your pet, which makes prevention of heartworm disease VERY important.

Q A

Doc, can my kitty get heartworms? The simple answer is YES, however our feline friends have a unique immune system which usually kills most of the larvae before they spread to the lung vessels. There are always exceptions to every rule, to truly be 100% sure that your kitty will not develop heartworm disease, monthly heartworm prevention is available in their sizes too!! REMEMBER, those pesky little mosquitos love our feline friends as much as our canine friends. REMEMBER: Heartworm disease is PREVENTABLE —Those pesky mosquitos are waiting for a chance to bite your pet —It takes 7-9 months for heartworms to be detected with the test —YEARLY heartworm testing is RECOMMENDED —NO geographical area or season is 100% safe from mosquitos For more information on types of heartworm prevention available for your beloved pet or if you have additional questions about heartworm disease, please contact Guilford-Jamestown Veterinary Hospital or your local veterinary clinic. Barry.

Hi! My name is Barry. I am an orange tabby cat - neutered male - with an exceptional personality (if I do say so myself). I was on the schedule to be euthanized at the animal shelter, but a staff member called AARF and I was rescued from the needle. I’m a friendly boy - ready to play! When you meet me you may notice that my back right leg is shorter than my left --doesn’t slow me down much, so I don’t even notice. DOB approximately May 2011. Contact AARF at 336-768-7387 for more information. n

Chester. Looking for the purrfect cat? Look no further! Chester is a robust healthy gray and white neutered male cat. He was born 10/25/2009 so his personality has matured - you’ll know what you’re getting! His favorite pastimes are eating and snoozing in a sunbeam. Chester is in a multicat foster home so should have little trouble integrating into your home if you already have a cat. Contact AARF at 336-768-7387 for more information. n

Zelda.

Milo

is a sweet and playful gray and white short-haired cat. He loves other cats but is shy around humans he doesn’t know. Milo will do well in a multi-cat household, but will need some time to acclimate and get to know his human companions. He is about 2 years old (born sometime in 2011) and has been neutered. Please contact AARF at 336-768-7387 for more information. n

Princess Peach. I am Peach and I am one of 13 puppies born to Ginger. We are shepherd mixes, some having longer hair and some short. We are all such beautiful babies and hope you will come meet us at an AARF adoption fair at 311 Harvey Street in Winston Salem. Due to a home visit being a part of the adoption process we cannot adopt outside a one hour radius of Winston Salem. Contact AARF at 336-7687387 for more information. n

CJ. As beautiful as

This little girl is a real jewel! Whitsett is not only beautiful but she is one of the sweetest kittens ever. Found in Whitsett, NC by a kind gentleman who heard a sound coming from his truck, she has turned out to be a delight to have around. Bobbi. If Bobbi

If you are looking for a can-do cat who likes a challenge, take a look at Fannie. This blue silver tabby isn’t daunted by a large stuffed mouse toy. At 6 months old, she’s got the world by the tail. Full of energy and fun, Fannie is a newcomer to FCAP. If you visit her at PetSmart in Greensboro, Fannie will extend a paw through the bars of her cage, seeking attention. This friendly girl is looking for a person who likes to play as much as she does. Fannie is up-to-date on vaccinations, has a microchip, and has been spayed.

were a painting, she would be a watercolor. On her silky white canvas, silver brush strokes blend to gray and then charcoal. Faint pinstripes give texture and depth. At 5 months old, Bobbi already is quite expressive. She tells us that she likes to “knead the dough” with her paws. As for her politics, we’re not sure; she might be a DemoCAT. Or she might be a RePURRblican. You decide. Bobbi has had all of her vaccinations, and has been spayed and microchipped.

Boo.

Brandi is dressed and

Contrary to the superstition that black cats bring bad luck, Boo prefers to think of himself as a good-luck kitty. And there is evidence for Boo’s belief. In Great Britain, tokens in the form of black cats often are given to brides for good luck. People in Scotland believe that a stray black cat will bring prosperity. So Boo has reason to believe that luck is on his side. And young Boo has entertained hundreds of folks at PetSmart with his playful antics. Won’t you open your home to good-luck Boo? Boo is current on vaccinations, has been neutered, and has a microchip.

ready to go. She is wearing the finest of suits, a tuxedo, acquired from Mother Nature Clothiers. While not a specific breed, tuxedos are a favorite among people who prefer a more formally dressed feline. At 5 months old, Brandi will chase a toy so fast she slides, like a dancer on a ballroom floor. Her goal in life is to be the next famous tuxedo cat in the White House, succeeding Chelsea Clinton’s famous kitty, Socks. She certainly is dressed for the part. Brandi is up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed and microchipped.

Whitney is what T.S. Eliot would call a “Jellicle Cat.” In his poem, “The Song of the Jellicles,” Eliot describes cats with coats like Whitney’s: Jellicle Cats are black and white, Jellicle Cats are rather small; Jellicle Cats are merry and bright, And pleasant to hear when they caterwaul. We haven’t heard Whitney caterwaul yet, but she fits the rest of these lines. This petite, little girl is playful but calm. She apparently has no fear of loud noises and is even-tempered with other cats. Whitney is up-to-date on vaccinations, has been spayed, and microchipped. Sage.

If you come to visit Sage at PetSmart in Greensboro, you will find a husky and handsome boy who has matured beyond the frisky kitten stage. This long-haired tuxedo is about 3 years old, so he has experienced a bit of life. He knows what he’s looking for in a new home. Sage would prefer a home where people respect his boundaries. He would rather not be picked up and placed on your lap. Instead, Sage likes to follow his people around, much like a dog would. He really loves his scratching post and you can see that he’s fond of his plush leopard-spotted bed. Sage is up-to-date on vaccinations, has a microchip, and has been neutered. Call 378-0878 or visit www.feralcatassistance.org for information. n

These four kittens came to RDF when they lost their high rise apartment with a fantastic view. Of course, while their old place may sound beautiful, it was certainly not safe. Today, they are living the “high” life exploring their foster home and the ways of the world from a safe area in a foster home. They have received their first rounds of vaccines and have been mircochipped, spayed or neutered and are ready to find their forever families. If you are looking for a sweet kitten to call your very own, apply today for these cuties!

absolute doll who just wants to lounge about in your presence. She enjoys a good lap or desk to lay on but is happy to just be in the same room as you. Pumpkin would love a home where she could be where you are (when you are home.). She understands that you do need to go to work, out to a movie with friends, etc. But please when you are home just let her bask in your presence. She has been spayed, microchipped, and is upto-date on her vaccines. If you need a purr pot in your life to tell you how great you are, then apply for Pumpkin today!

Tucker is a perfect example of the

Hercules

saying “Great American Mutt!” We have no clue what he is mixed with, but he is an all around fabulous puppy. He is short and thick and does not look like he will be a tall dog. His coat is wavy on top (like a Chesapeake Bay Retriever) and his tail curls up. He absolutely loves other dogs, sleeps with the cat in his foster home and is fabulous with small children, never jumping up on them. He is crate-trained and uses a doggie door. He also loves to ride in the car. Tucker listens very well and never runs off. He even follows his foster mom around the farm when she goes for trail rides on her horse. He would love a home with another dog or active children.

was found about a month ago as a stray. When his owners could not be located he came to Red Dog Farm. Hercules is very laid back and likes kids and other dogs. He does want to chase small animals outside but listens well on a leash and will stop and sit when asked. This boy is big and weighs close to 100 lbs. Although a large dog, Hercules is a true “gentle giant” and wants to just curl up on your lap. He is a very sweet boy who is just looking for love and attention!

If you are interested in adopting Tucker, please visit our website, www.reddogfarm.com for more information. n

Piglets.

Red Dog Farm currently has 14 piglets looking for their forever farms. Their parent pigs came to us from a horrible situation of neglect. However, these precious babies have not had one bad day in their life and no nothing other than human love. All the piglets are doing well, they’re fully weaned and ready to go to their new homes! Pot-bellied pigs need shelter from the elements and a sturdy fence and room to run and root with their noses. If you are interested in adopting a pot bellied pig, please research their needs before applying and visit www.reddogfarm.com for more information. n

Sweet Pea

came to Red Dog Farm when her owner moved and could no longer care for her. Sweet Pea couldn’t have a more appropriate name - she is very sweet! She enjoys being petted and doesn’t mind being handled in the least. She is a tad nervous with the resident cat, but to her credit anyone would be nervous if “watched” frequently. The cat doesn’t bother Sweet Pea, but just enjoys the “bunny channel” of cat TV. Sweet Pea is adjusting to it, so could go to a home with other critters. If you are interested in adopting Sweet Pea , please visit our website, www.reddogfarm.com for more information. n

Katniss.

Hi, I’m Katniss, and you met my brother, Gale, in the other picture. We’re having fun doing basic obedience training at People & Paws 4 Hope and learning a lot, too. I don’t know much about “The Hunger Games” ‘cause they feed us pretty good at the SPCA. At just 3 months of age, I’ve got a lot of growing to do!

Simm.

Hey there, I’m just outside enjoying the sunshine. I’m 1+ years old and like being an indoor/outdoor kinda guy. Sorta “don’t fence me in” type. I don’t go very far, just a walk around the yard at my foster home. Then I like to curl up with you. My foster home has a dog and other cats so I’m pretty good with them. Can I check out your backyard? Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 if you’d like more information about me. n

Ham. Shhh... don’t tell the dogs, but I just can’t resist a rawhide chew! My name is “Ham”, and I bet I’d like a hambone just as much. I guess you could say I’m a dog in a cat suit, but it fits perfectly. I’m around 3 or 4 years old and ready to be top dog (I mean) top cat at your house! O.J. by Carol Reed

He sleeps beneath the snow, That orange cat of mine. He sleeps the sleep eternal, Until the end of time. Beneath the earth in darkness, In cold and snow and sleet, He lies encased forever In hearts and memories. He wandered into our lives, Unloved, unbrushed, unfed. A little meat, a comb, a lap, His purrs were thanks unsaid. He loved us all, but I was best. I fed and brushed his fur. We sat and read warm afternoons. I stroked to hear the purr. When winter came with ice and snow, His coat turned dull and pale. His blood ran thin, his eyes grew dim. His life began to fail. “It’s just no use” the doctor said. “He’ll make the others sick.” We’ll miss our cat, his loving ways, His warm soft fur so thick. He sleeps beneath the snow, That orange cat of mine. Beneath the snow and in our hearts He’ll always be enshrined.

Stella is a beauti-

Sergeant

ful two year old Siberian Husky who has been waiting for her Superman to come and take her away. However, she should have no trouble because one glance at this babe and you will be hooked forever. Talented? Oh, absolutely! In fact, dancing is only one of the thousands of talents Stella was blessed with. Just wait until you see her break down to the Cookie Dance.

is a loyal Terrier/ Pit Bull who will protect his family at all costs. Even when that means lying awake all night just to keep the monsters at bay. He likes to run a tight ship and can’t help but worry if his owner stays out past their curfew. It only means that he loves you more than anything in the entire world. In his spare time, Sergeant enjoys sniffing out new locations for hiding his bones and occasionally the car keys.

Visit Stella at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter located at 250 Cherokee Camp Road in Reidsville, NC. n

is a 9-month old German Shepherd looking for his permanent place. King has a big heart to match his gentle giant appearance. Ralph. I think the real question is who could possibly NOT love this silly billy gumdrop. Ralph may be a seven year old Maine Coon kitty, but his age has only made him wise. He doesn’t ask questions, he simply understands. With that in mind, you could tell him about your day and he will listen. On bad days, he will cheer you up with a few corny jokes and comfort you with snuggles and some ice cream. Ralph is neutered, front and back declawed and waiting to go home today! Poppy Cat.

Jasmine

Wondering how Poppy Cat got his adorable, but manly, name? Easy! It is because this Persian absolutely loves sitting on the counter and assisting with homemade poppy seed muffins. He longs of becoming a five star chef. His favorite part of baking, of course, is licking the spoon afterward. Just remember, don’t let him have too much icing because he tends to get a little “chocolate wasted.” When all is finished, he likes to curl up in front of the TV and enjoy his favorite movie, Garfield.

comes from a long line of Royals! And this Rag Doll mix sparkles with personality. Such a dazzling lioness deserves only the best family the world can offer. She graduated top of her class at Oxford University and has high hopes that one day cats will rule the world. However, if that doesn’t exactly work out, she is purr-fectly fine with just being queen of the household. Jasmine is spayed, front and back declawed and waiting to go home today! Adoption fee is $15.

is a 2 year old hairless Chinese Crested. When he came into rescue he was on Prozac, his previous owner claimed he was dog aggressive. He’s been off of Prozac now for over 6 months and has not attacked any of the other foster dogs. He loves Chihuahua Rescue walking on a leash, riding in the car and running around the yard. He will go to the door if he has to go outside and is crate-trained. Dino is a strong-willed dog that will need someone with an alpha personality. He is a great dog but would prefer to either have another dog his size to play with or be an only dog. He is up-to-date on his shots and neutered. If you’d think you’d like to him a forever home, please contact us for an application at wildlifeed2@aol.com n

Wylie came from the Humane Society and was found as a stray. He’s a bundle of energy, but he settles very nicely when he is hugged or petted. I think that’s because the only thing a Doberman likes more than playing is being made over. We have discovered through play that he Doberman Rescue of the Triad has mild hip dysplasia in one hip. He can still run and play to keep the muscle strong and everything in order, but no more leaping in the air. Wylie is very people-oriented and enjoys life as it comes - a well-balanced dog. He knows to sit on command, but being young, he will need some leash work (no surprise there), and he responds very nicely to positive reinforcement. Special Feature You’re 15 now, but can still run up a tree, jump over my deck wall and balance on its most narrow rails. You really are something, Mama Kitty.

Dear Mama Kitty,

By Patricia Ann Small

I understand now why there are people in this world that just don’t like cats. They’ve only met cats like you; ornery, obstinate, spoiled, spiteful. Its cats like you that give other kitties a bad name. Have you ever come when I called you? Yeah, when you were hungry and I had a can of cat food in my hand. And how is it that you know when I have a can of tuna in the pantry? You always hold out eating your food until I finally break down and give it to you. I’ve forgotten what tuna tastes like. And while we are on the subject, are you ever planning to let me use the cut glass bowl on my dressing table again? Well, I’ll give you that one. I agree water does seem to taste better in a pretty glass. But will you please explain to me why it is with litter at $12 a box, and considering the fact you spent the first 8 years of your life outside, that when we are doing yard work you insist on going back inside to do your business? But most of all Mama Kitty I need some sleep. These 2:00 a.m. feedings are getting old. No, it isn’t mandatory for your food to be heated in the microwave 5 seconds before you can eat it. Like I’ve told you time and time again, one of us needs to work to provide a roof over our heads, pay for the heat and buy the cat food. I can’t shut you out of the bedroom, because the house does get cold at night this time of year. You’re getting old now and I can’t stand the thought of you getting cold. About dawn you prick at the covers. I lift them. You purr loudly and curl up to my stomach. I massage your cold ears. The only problem is there is no place to rest my arms so there I lay until you thaw and slip back out. But Mama Kitty, do you think it’s gratitude to deposit one of your rare hairballs on the bed every time I wash the comforter? But I do love you. Don’t I always tell you, you’d better be glad you live with me because no one else would put up with you? And you did choose me, didn’t you? When I get tempted to go for the fly swat when you gracefully leap up on my 42

kitchen counters with your litter dusted feet I take a deep breath and remember those days. You belonged to a neighbor. You would trudge your way through a long field to drink from the dog’s water bowl to make milk for the kittens you clearly were nursing. One very hot day, you staggered towards me several times with wild eyes yowling. You lay panting on the sidewalk, your belly flush with the ground. You were the most emaciated animal I had ever seen. It had been so many years since I’d had a cat, I didn’t know how much you could eat. I brought you some deli ham from the refrigerator and gave you a big slice. You devoured it like your ancestors would have on the plains of Africa. You quickly scarfed down two more, but then stopped. I could tell you were still hungry, but you slipped away with it dangling from your mouth to take back to your kittens who were apparently nursing you to death. I watched you go through the field to a large brush pile. A couple of nights later a bad thunderstorm came and I found you had moved your kittens under the house. I called the neighbor and he came and got you, but it was only a few months later when you had another litter in the top of our shed. You must have already been pregnant. You had nothing soft to lie on to nurse your kittens. You seemed grateful when I brought you a folded blanket, water and started to help wean the kittens on canned food. I’ll always admire your courage for fending off the wild intruder to your nest. You were wounded in the leg, but you saved all but one. As you lay recuperating it was fun to watch you entertain your kittens with your long whip-like tail. I asked the neighbor for you, had you spayed and brought you inside. Well, you know the story. Thanks for helping me the other day when I had to have Buddy put down. Though you still look for him, you seemed to sense my pain. As I lay sobbing on the deck lounge, you quietly slipped onto my chest; looked into my eyes with something akin to sympathy and placed your paw first on my finger, then on my hand just like a friend would. We are friends, aren’t we Mama Kitty?

Love, Tricia

Glavin & Maddux were returned to Greyhound Friends when their owner could no longer take care of them. They have lived together for five years and appear to be close. Glavin, the brindle male, is the most affectionate and would be happiest in a home with no small children. Maddox, the white male, is just a chubby, happy-go-lucky guy. Both are eight years old and need to be in a home with no cats. While they can be adopted separately, the two are hoping they can find a loving home together, forever. Could that home be yours?

s we bustle about making preparations for the perfect “turkey day”, checking things off the list, rearranging our homes for guests, and stocking the fridge and cupboards with enticing goodies, I wonder how pets interpret all this. So instead of worrying how the dog will behave on Thanksgiving, let’s look at it from his perspective. How does Fido deal with us, our guests, and, most of all, those tempting aromas wafting from the kitchen? As a dog, my first thought would be that whatever is going on is for ME. After all, my meals are prepared in the kitchen, yummy treats dispensed and crumbs snapped up as they drop to the floor. My powerful sniffer tells me I must be a very good dog for my humans to go to all this trouble. But what is taking so long? I’ve been smelling turkey for hours and not even a bite. Watching mom baste that bird is sheer torture…it keeps appearing and disappearing as I sit here salivating. I don’t understand. My vision isn’t that good, but my nose connects me to the pies and casseroles on the counter, each with their own delectable scent. The scavenger in me says, “go for it”, but I’m holding out for the treasure in the oven. As strangers arrive they congregate in the kitchen…MY kitchen… where the feast of the decade awaits. Suddenly I’m in the way now and everyone keeps telling me to “go lie down”. Why doesn’t mom tell these intruders to go lie down so I can eat? I know what “leave it” means, but this is getting ridiculous. If I wander too close to the dining room table, “leave it”; if I sniff a guest (which is how I greet people), “leave it”, if I even dare look at the sweet potatoes, “leave it”. Suddenly I can’t do anything right. Some lady in a hat keeps shooing me away, afraid I’ll either spill her drink or she’ll get cooties, not sure which. I remember an old Newfy buddy getting even with an equally uptight guest. He flung a giant

Luther was dumped off at the shelter when his owners noticed his eyesight was failing. After a trip to Carolina Vet Specialists, Luther was diagnosed with Progressive Retinal Atrophy. The bad news is he will be completely blind by Christmas. The good news is that it is a painless, genetic condition and he needs no medication for it. Luther is a quick learner who wants to make his people happy. He is already learning to follow people around to Lab Rescue of NC avoid bumping into things and is settling in his foster home. THANKSGIVING-A Dog’s Point of View

slimer that landed square on the back of her perfectly coiffed head. Everyone (except her) dissolved into laughter, telling him “good job”. What a great trick. But wait…I hear an “awwww” coming from the cluster of humans. There’s a dog lover in the house. Uncle Billy feels my pain and gives me a biscuit. He’s my new best friend. I’ll need to stick close to him while the interlopers try to steal my dinner. The clatter of plates tells me the feast is moving from the kitchen to the dining room table. The turkey thieves have surrounded it like guards, blocking me with their chairs. Uncle Billy is my last hope. My pleading eyes start working their magic…he’s caving…and I’m in the perfect spot. Then a major setback-- the lecture about not feeding me table scraps. Rats. Mom’s listing all the stuff I’ve been dreaming of all day…turkey bones, skin, gravy, stuffing, onions…or anything high in fat, salt, or sugar. The vet told her I could get very sick or even die because my digestive tract cannot handle such rich foods. I didn’t know that. Well there’s always the trash, but she’s got that covered too. Literally. The string, skewers, and turkey carcass are wrapped in foil, sealed in the only trash can I can’t raid. My luck is running out. Then a miracle. She looks at me adoringly and tells the group about my special Thanksgiving dinner which will consist of kibble moistened with turkey broth, dotted with pieces of white meat and carrots. For dessert, some special pumpkin doggie cookies she baked just for me! Uncle Billy will take me for a walk after dinner and have me do tricks for the cookies. This may turn out to be the best Thanksgiving ever. I’m one lucky dog!

Rambo is very playful and loving. He has learned his way in and out the doggie door to do his potty business. Rambo gets along well with other dogs and children and is a lot of fun. He does have food allergies and is on a no-grain diet and he has dry eyes, requiring eye drops twice a day. Rambo’s fur is growing back since he is now getting medication for a skin condition. He just Pug Rescue of NC loves everyone, and is fostered near Greensboro.
