Letter from the Editors
Welcome to Jennifer Frazier

ow, we cannot believe this is our third issue! Some days life is like being on an exercise wheel - run, run, run and still can’t move forward. But, we’ve never had so much fun in our lives! We’ve learned a few things along the way, but have only scratched the surface. One thing’s for certain, there is an incredible group of people who work behind the scenes to rescue the animals that appear in this magazine from month to month. These people make up the shelters, rescue groups and foster families that our area is so blessed to have. They nurse sick animals back to health; they travel long distances to pick up these animals; they take care of the day-to-day needs of these animals; they hold or attend adoption fairs regularly in hopes of finding permanent homes for these beautiful creatures; this list could go on and on. They are dedicated souls that not only minister to the physical needs of the animals, they also supply the love and attention that keeps these beautiful creatures going. You cannot

be cynical when you witness the love, tireless energy and devotion these folks put forth. Our hats are off to each and every one of you. We would like to mention our cover story focus this month older dogs that are in need of good homes. Sadly many of them were surrendered after living in homes and knowing what it is like to have human companionship. We sincerely hope these animals will find their “permanent” home once again. They still have so much to give. We feature two “doggie” couples in our cover story that have lived together for over ten years. Here’s hoping they will stay together. Check out all of the seniors on pages eight and nine - we’re sure you’ll fall in love! In conclusion, we would not be able to print and distribute our magazine if it were not for our advertisers. The economy is tough and we appreciate the extra effort and sacrifices you have made - thanks folks for making it all possible!

Cover Story
Senior Project: Adopting an Older Dog by Marsha Williams
M
any people believe that older dogs enter animal shelters for health reasons, behavior issues or for being too costly for their owners. Frequently, they are simply brought in because their owners grew tired of them, or maybe their owners had to relocate to a place where animals were not allowed or developed allergies to the dog. Other reasons include loss of a home or job, illness or death of the owner, or the owners may have experienced a “change in lifestyle”. Older dogs typically have a harder time being adopted because of various misconceptions, but we’re here to inform you of the many benefits of adopting a mature or senior dog. Some of the best dogs you could ever
hope to adopt from an animal shelter are those who are older and have more life experience! Older dogs have a sense of what is expected of them. They are often already trained, and have a great appreciation for your attention and affection; sometimes they even have a better temperament towards people and other dogs (and other animals). Older dogs tend to be loving and can be a wonderful addition to your home and family. There are so many reasons to consider adopting an older dog. Older dogs can usually hold their bladder longer, so you will not have to take them out as often; and chewing on your furniture from teething well don’t worry about it! Older dogs are more mellow and generally learn quickly. They tend to settle

in easier, and love to be with you, at your feet or on the sofa beside you, whichever you prefer; they just want to be loved and love you back. They are so grateful for a second chance. Unlike puppies, mature dogs have developed their unique personalities. When you spend time with an older dog you are sure to see what you get. Older dogs are more likely to be ready for adventures such as hiking, car-riding, boating, or any other activity that you may choose. Older dogs generally allow you the luxury of a good night’s sleep because they can become accustomed to human schedules much easier than a puppy. As a rule, they will not need to eat during the wee hours of the night, or need comforting through the night, and probably will not
Tom (l) and Sherry (r) are both 10 yrs. old. They were surrendered to the shelter after spending the last decade together. We are hopeful someone will adopt both of them so they can stay together.

have to go to the bathroom during the night. If you do decide to adopt an older dog here are a few things to consider: Older dogs are sweet, experienced and not too demanding. They are excited to just curl up next to you and watch television or snooze the day away. Spend time with them, always remembering older dogs require love and attention just like younger dogs. Play gently with them, take them for walks, give them that belly rub they so desire and need.

Some senior dogs may have special health needs, dietary needs or may require a soft bed to lie on to protect their legs if they have arthritis. Be aware of your dog’s needs. There is no reason the older years can’t be some of the best years in a dog’s life. With regular veterinary attention, daily care and proper nutrition, an older dog can still experience a happy and healthy life. Make one of these loving dogs your “next best friend” today!
the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them. As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one. I rescued a human today. http://rescuemedog.org/dog-blog/i-rescued-a-humantoday-by-janine-allen/ Full credit for story on page 6.

I Want to Save a Human Today (or soon) by Buddy Shepherd It was a sad day for my owner and me the day I was surrendered. Economic hardships made it impossible for my owner to keep me any longer. I’m two years old and weigh around 70 pounds. I love being around people, being walked on a leash and I promise I will come right to you when called. My previous owner taught me well, now I’d love a new companion who will enjoy a friend who will never let them down. Please take me home, I have been here since last November.

Meet Ophelia! Rescued from a daycare Ophelia is a sweet little girl that loves to sing. We are told she is approximately 2 years old. Colorful, attractive, and lively are just some of the great attributes of the Parakeet or Budgerigar. With their warm and inquisitive personalities, they make a great pet for both the beginner or an experienced bird keeper. They are quite hardy, inexpensive, and easy to care for. Ophelia comes with food, her cage and toys. Her adoption fee is $25. You can meet Ophelia at our adoption center located in Greensboro, NC at 705 Milner Drive.
Meet Reese! She was born on June 3rd and is a Pointer mix. When her foster mom was asked to describe this little girl, here are the words she used: confident, perfect, beautiful, angel, playful, intelligent, and explorer. She also said that Reese plays well with others and is turning into an olympic swimmer. No, Reese cannot deny any of this, nor the fact that she LOVES water! Reese has learned how to sit on command and is working on the commands “stay” and “down”. Reese endears herself to everyone and is a special girl to be around. She is now accepting applications for you to become her new parental unit! Apply now!

Tess can’t wait to meet
Meet Daisy! I’m a born leader and someday I’ll be President. My siblings, Ollie and Blue, do whatever I tell them to do and they love me very much. I can be very vocal when I have something to say and I also like my foster home’s older cats because they are very nice and we copy what they do because they are good big brothers. They are showing us the ropes. I have exotic brownish/gold eyes and a passion for play. I also love having my head scratched and getting snuggle time from my foster mom. My favorite toy is a puffy ball because I can pick it up and carry it around. I would love to come home with you and be your favorite kitty.

How old is my cat in people years? The old way of thinking was one year in a cat’s life equals seven “human” years. However, recent studies have proven this to be not quite accurate. Cats go through puberty much faster than we think. At age two they are actually anywhere from twenty one to twenty eight years of age. However, after they turn two, we see them slow down in aging to about four “human” years per year. Thus, a fifteen year old cat is really in their early seventies.

How long will my cat live?

The answer has changed dramatically over the years as we have grown to provide our cats with better care, better nutrition and a better environment. Just like humans, numerous factors are involved to provide a long and happy life. How do I know if my cat is ill?
Cats tend to be solitary and stoic creatures often showing little or no signs that they are becoming sick. Changes in your cat’s appetite, attitude, activity level and bathroom habits may be indicators of something more than just “an old cat”. A “grumpy” cat may be a sick cat and typically older cats that stop using the litter box do so for a medical reason.

• Pain Management
Signs your cat may be ill: • Diminished exercise or an increased amount of sleep - may actually be arthritis or bone and muscle problems. Environmental approaches to improve your cat’s comfort can include placing food and water bowls on the floor as opposed to on top of counters, and making sure the litter box has low sides for easy access.
Theo
• Inactivity and decrease or increase in water consumption may indicate or lead to kidney disease. Try adding low–sodium chicken broth or tuna juice to their water or food for more moisture. Cats often like to drink from a water fountain or a dripping sink. • Hearing loss tends to be gradual and may not be noticed until the cat is completely deaf. This is a major concern especially if the cat goes outside and may not hear cars, or approaching predators. • Hair loss or dry & flaky skin may be prevented or corrected by dietary supplements or special medicated shampoos. Sometimes this is a first indication of hormone changes or thyroid disease. Remember, “Old age is not a disease; it is a stage of life”. If you notice any of these changes in your cat, have them checked out by your veterinarian. None of us would be very happy if we had an ache or pain, lump or bump, and were told “Oh, you’re just getting old”. Regular examinations and blood work (every six months to a year) by your veterinarian can help identify problems early. We all love our pets dearly and want them to be happy and comfortable as long as possible. The oldest cat I have personally treated is 26 years old and going strong!

Peaches has had a hard time finding her forever home. She was placed in a home that turned her into the shelter when they didn’t want to have a cat anymore. FCAP rescued her from the high kill shelter and quickly placed her with a young lady. The lady married and is starting a family, so Peaches is no longer wanted. She is such a sweet, loving cat. Trying to photograph her was difficult because she wouldn’t stop “making biscuits” long enough to take a pretty photo of her. She likes to be held and given lots of attention. If you're looking for a loving cat that loves attention and affection, come meet Peaches. Call 378-0878 to set up an appointment. n

Mimi
was rescued along with her 4 kittens. She is very outgoing and affectionate. “Making biscuits” is her favorite past time. Carrying on a conversation with her foster family, makes Mimi an interesting addition to the family. Mimi is up-to-date on her vaccinations and will be spayed and microchipped when her kittens are weaned.
Mimi’s adoption fee is $110. Please call 378-0878 if you would like to meet Mimi. n
Nikki Cheeks was found in a feral cat colony in Greensboro. He was taken in to be neutered and his caretaker found that he was such a sweet, laid back cat! He is just so happy to be inside where it’s warm and comfortable and just LOVES to have his chunky, huge cheeks rubbed on! Nikki is so relaxed that we think he would do well with kids too. He is neutered, up to date on his vaccines and will be microchipped before he is adopted. Nikki Cheek’s adoption fee is $110. Can you give him the loving home he is looking for? If so, call 378-0878 for more details. n
Raina and her siblings were found in a restaurant parking lot in Greensboro. They were only 5 weeks old and had been dumped there in a box. Raina is a beautiful female kitten predominantly white with black on each side of her head and a black nose and tail. She has multiple black spots on her body - needless to say she is gorgeous. She is very playful of course and also very cuddly and sweet. Raina purrs loudly and loves affection. She romps around with her littermates and then curls up with them for long naps with them. Raina will be spayed and microchipped prior to adoption. Raina’s adoption fee is $110. Please call 378-0878 to adopt this girl. n

is cool, calm and collected. He does not appear to worry over anything, including who his companions are in the kennel. Henry had been a well loved kitty and his prior owner had Henry neutered. The lady’s husband became allergic so she sorrowfully came in to surrender him. He is an 8 year old dark orange and white tabby that loves having some soft canned food, which all the felines get every morning. Henry is a medium sized boy by weight, but he has a long

lucky break when he was spotted by Animal Control, who brought him safely to the shelter. He is calm, loving, laid back and so appreciative of a few minutes of your attention! He had a home at one point because he was previously neutered and he is so socialized. Tony the Tiger is large in size, now 12 years old and deserves to complete his life with comfort, love and dignity. Who will step up and make the golden years shine for Tony the Tiger?

She was found by Animal Control but is a very social girl that must have had a home previously, but no one came forward to claim her. Ms. Linda is small in size, white with grey tabby markings, just 1 ½ years old, and she has already had her visit to the surgical team to be spayed. is confused as to why she is here, again. She was adopted from this shelter 3 ½ years ago. She had a loving owner who is moving away and could not take Ella with her. Ella is a quiet girl that gets along great with her kennelmate but is a little shy when meeting new people. It takes her just a short while to become accustomed to you so that she can enjoy the love and affection you want to show her. She is 4 ½ years old, medium sized, has a short solid grey coat and she was spayed previously. When you come to visit Ella, please ask for her by ID 1961778.n

Lady
has fabulous expressions and the cutest ear that tilts up and out with her quizzical looks. She is a 5 year old Beagle mix that was surrendered to the shelter as a found stray weighing about 25 lbs. Lady is mostly light brown with white markings in her coat. Lady gets along with other dogs and she enjoys being with people too. She was calm when walking on her leash and while she was outside with me. She only has to be spayed as the last of the services required from the shelter for her adoption fee. Lady would love to find her forever home! Please ask for Lady by ID 10718083.

Lacey
is a happy little black and tan shepherd mix. It turned dark outside when the afternoon rain came but Lacey was just fine. She was found by a sympathetic Animal Control officer who saw she was in pain with an injured back left leg. No one came to claim Lacey, so she was evaluated for treatment for her injured leg and it was determined that removal of it was the best course of action for her welfare. While she was in surgery she was also spayed. Lacey has adapted quickly, gets along well and just has a happy face all the time! She is quiet in her kennel and walked nicely on the leash to go outside. Lacey is about 2 years old, weighs 37 lbs and is very hopeful to find her furr-ever new best friend(s). Come meet Lacey and ask for ID 10400284. n

Trixie
is a tri-colored Doberman Pincher mix. She is quiet, friendly and walks very good on the leash. She is 2 ½ years old and weighs in right at 60 lbs. You would not think anything would scare this girl, but the flash of the camera had her trying to hide from it behind my helper! With the flash off she was back at ease. Trixie has been spayed since she was surrendered when the owner could no longer afford to keep her. Someone could not take Trixie home, but just loved her and sponsored $40 off her adoption fee! Please ask for Trixie by ID 9220591. n
Paella
Delicious got her name because she is so sweet! She is a great little shepherd mix that is chocolate and tan colored, just now 1 year old and she is about 25 lbs right now, but will grow a little more. Delicious is a submissive girl and just wants to be accepted and receive some loving attention from her new companion(s). She is fair on a leash walk but could easily be taught some great manners. She will soon be spayed as part of her $95 adoption fee. Is Delicious the dog for you? Come find out! Please ask for her by ID 10658800. n
Pearl.
is a big loveable black Lab mix. She loves to be with people and is very easy to walk on her leash. This girl tries to ‘hold it’ in her kennel until she can get outside. Paella is now 5 years old, weighs 50+ lbs and she has been spayed. Animal Control found a great girl when they got Paella off the dangerous street and into the safety of the shelter. Would you consider making Paella your newest family member?
Our volunteers say Pearl is a great dog, very friendly and gentle. Pearl is a shepherd mix that is just 1 year old and she loves life and all the discoveries to be found. She would benefit from a new companion(s) that will take the time to teach her basic commands and give her regular walks. She has a fluffy black coat with a white patch on her chest and she is medium sized. A kind lady found her and did not want harm to come to Pearl, so she brought her to the shelter. Now, Pearl is hopeful that her new family will be in to adopt her soon. She has been spayed as part of her $95 adoption fee.

Please contact Red Dog Farm via website to find out how to adopt us!
Bianca, a Florida White Rabbit, came to Red Dog Farm after being found wandering through a local neighborhood. It appears that someone either let Bianca go or she got away from her home. She was covered with over 400 ticks, which the veterinary staff were kind enough to remove for her. Bianca is a fantastic rabbit and has obviously been someone’s pet. She will make a great family pet, or classroom pet, for someone looking for a bunny to adopt. She is one of the sweetest bunnies we have ever met.

Calvin
is looking for a family to call her own. She came to Red Dog Farm very pregnant and 24 hours later gave birth to 9 beautiful kittens. She was such a devoted mommy that when her foster mom took in two bottlefeeders, she took them as her very own too and nursed all 11 kittens with not one complaint. All of her kittens have since been adopted and Saffron now feels very alone. Do you have room in your home and heart to adopt this very special girl? She is spayed, current on shots, microchipped and ready to go!
, a Nigerian Dwarf Goat came to us from Forsyth County Animal Control. He is a very friendly little guy and is absolutely precious! He’d be a great addition to either Julie and Jane or Franklin and Eleanor, some of our other adoptable goats. Calvin has been vaccinated and castrated and is now adoptable. His adoption fee is $100 if he is adopted alone or $75 if combined with another pair of goats adopted from us. Goats are very social herd animals, so they are happier with goat friends to play with.
If you are interested in adopting Saffron, visit www.reddogfarm.com for more information. n

Hooch
, an American Staffordshire Terrier, was surrendered by his owners because their apartment complex decided to no longer allow “bully breeds”. Hooch is neutered, housebroken and crate trained. He has never been an outdoor dog and would be best suited for an indoor, active home.

Rocky
is a young neutered male between 2 and 3 years old. He is up to date on all of his shots and on heartworm preventative. Rocky came into rescue nearly 6 months ago with a broken front leg. Arthrodesis surgery was performed to fuse the broken leg together. Now he is on the mend and ready for a new forever home. Rocky is house broken and gets along well with his older foster brother. NC Airedale Rescue Rocky will do best in a home without small children due to his size. Rocky wants everyone to know that he can still do anything any other dog can do in spite of the fact that his front leg no longer bends. He is currently in obedience training and wants a family who will continue that with him. If you think you can provide Rocky with a loving, supportive home please contact ncairerescue@yahoo.com. You can also read more about Rocky by visiting: http://www.alldogssite.com/paraderocky1.html. n
Nesbitt.
I am a very handsome boy of around 3 and in my humble opinion my pictures don’t do me justice. I am a very fun, playful boy, but I’m also very sweet and love to cuddle. I also make a great shadow, as I follow foster Momma around everywhere. I am playful with kids and other dogs, Carolina Basset Hound Rescue but I do have one slight issue, I am a food guarder but we are working on this and with time I hope to overcome my issue. Foster momma is trying to teach me that from now on I will always have food and I don’t need to fight for it. I have made lots of progress, but it is suggested that I do not go to a home with small children. Although I love children, I would never want to forget my manners and hurt one. I do get along with my foster siblings, but when it’s time to eat I am not willing to share, so I have to eat in my own space. Will you please take a chance on a handsome guy like me? Email rgering@triad.rr.com or visit www.cbhr.com for more details. n
Sandy, 10 years old,
Echo was pulled from a shelter. He’s a 6 year old quiet fellow that likes to be where people are. He likes sitting in the sun and having late night snacks in bed! He has never Boston Terrier Rescue of NC had an accident in his foster home. He barks to go out and to come back in, and he is cratetrained. Echo loves belly rubs!!!! He also loves chew toys and snack time. Echo delights in car rides and chasing the lawn mower!! (Of course he is on one side of the fence and the mower on the other.) Echo would make a great addition to almost any household, especially a home with no more than one other dog. Echo is on medication for cushings disease and hypothyroidism, but is doing very well. Echo’s adoption fee is $200. Please call 339-4368 for more information. n
Daisy
the Darling is just as precious as her name. She came to us from an abuse situation, her owner was abusing his spouse and when the spouse left she had to leave Daisy behind to endure. Thankfully, the spouse contacted us and we were able to go and save Daisy from the abuse and life at her former home. She is now a Four Seasons Boxer Rescue happy healthy girl who likes to just “leave it all in the past”. She loves to be around people and will look up at you with those “Darling Daisy” eyes and almost make you melt. Daisy knows how to sit and stay and even waits patiently for you to put her bowl down for her to eat, of course after you say it is okay. Daisy loves other dogs and is house and crate trained as well! Daisy’s adoption fee is $100. Visit www.FourSeasonsBoxerRescue.com or email us at FourSeasonsBoxerRescue@gmail.com to adopt her. n
Aurora takes “The Nanny Dog”
entered rescue after her former owner took her to a high kill shelter in SC because she had bad breath. What a loss to that owner—with the proper dental care that all canine companions should receive, her breath would have never gotten so bad. Almost Home Dachshund Rescue Sandy is a very sweet lap dog and is house-trained, crate-trained, walks well on a leash and has no obvious behavioral problems. She minds her manners with everyone including children, but she may not appreciate the constant running and noise that goes along with having a human sibling. Sandy will work out best in a forever home with no cats or other small animals. Sandy is spayed, up-todate on vaccinations and is heartworm negative. She recently had a dental to make her breath fresh and clean.
nickname for the breed very seriously with her wonderfully loving, motherly, and nurturing personality. She adores children of all ages, big and small. Her most adorable personality trait is gently pawing or nudging you with her nose when she needs some extra lovin. She plays well with other dogs and cats but would rather spend her time snuggling with her people. She has a low to moderate energy level and doesn’t mind going on a walk once in a while or Carolina Care Bullies playing a bit as long as she is spending time with you. The basic commands are coming to her with ease and she would make an excellent family pet.

Amber's Story: A Dog’s Journey to Finding a Place to Call Home by Sharon Gray
O
n May 15th of 2009 Amber came into our lives. We (the Animal Rescue & Foster Program) rescued her from a shelter in Lee County. We had received an e-mail and pictures from someone in the Siler City, NC area about a mother dog that was to be PTS the next day. PTS meaning “Put To Sleep”. We had a foster home willing to take her. She came to ARFP, emaciated, with nine newborn puppies sucking the life from her. Five days after going to an ARFP foster home, she broke with Parvo. Amber teetered on death’s door for a week. Her nine puppies had to be removed from her and bottle fed. Volunteers rallied, signing up to feed two and three shifts a day. This enabled the pups to remain in their foster home, close to Amber, so as not to stress her even more. The foster home was a revolving door for many days as an entire village helped nurse Amber back to health. It took lots of fluids, IVs, drugs, and TLC to pull Amber through the disease that we almost caught too late. Amber finally pulled through the deadly Parvo-virus and then it was time to fatten her up. Once Amber’s puppies were weaned and distributed to different foster homes Amber, too, was sent to a new foster home, one that would love her, and give her the attention she so desperately needed. She developed into a healthy, beautiful, dog that we labeled a Collie mix. Her true colors came out once Amber was in a home without her puppies. She liked people but was not sure whom to trust. Children made her nervous. She loved the company of other dogs. She grew to trust all of the ARFP volunteers that she would see each week at adoption events. Close to a year after rescuing Amber, she just could not find that one person, outside
Top photo: Amber, today, healthy and happy; bottom left photo: Amber’s puppies; bottom right photo: Amber, May 2009 of her foster dad, whom she could trust 100%. This July, through the Happy Tails Magazine, Amber met Vicky. Vicky was looking for a companion dog that needed her. One that needed someone special to love them. Vicky saw Amber in Happy Tails and contacted ARFP. She met Amber and it was touch and go at first but Vicky could see that Amber needed someone like her and that she needed a dog like Amber. We at ARFP could see that Vicky had that special touch and the patience and love that Amber needed.
Amber has been with Vicky for over a month and things could not be going more perfect. Amber is walking on a leash with her tail held up proudly, she is not using her crate, and she is looking at Vicky as her person. She has more confidence than she has ever had. Was it worth all of the hours, money, and time that it took to get Amber to this place in her life? We think so! Thank you Happy Tails for being instrumental in helping Amber find her forever home. You are making such a difference in the animal community!

Celebrate was found run-
ning along the interstate during a snow storm. Thankfully a rescue angel stopped and picked her up and took her to a shelter. Celebrate subsequently found her way to us. Despite her past circumstances, she is blessed with those Dober qualities that we know and love Doberman Rescue of the Triad so much. She is very friendly and outgoing, she greets all as friends, she is smart, and she took to learning the doggy door without any resistance or hesitation. She’s good on a leash, fastidious in her habits, and of course doesn’t hesitate to leap up into a vehicle and ride happily along. She passed the vet’s assessment with flying colors and welcomed everyone there with Dobie kisses. Regardless of what her past experience may have been, she’s a loving, healthy, enthusiastic, happy, and grateful lady who is longing to celebrate with a new forever family. To adopt Celebrate, please call 336-621-3453. n
Mona Lisa
was adopted as a puppy from the Wake Co. SPCA. Six years later, she was found wandering Chapel Hill, her collar embedded, hair matted, covered with fleas and feral to the touch. She was treated for a URI, UTI and heartworms but was still not ready to be adopted. Mona Lisa had lost all of her social skills during her time on the streets, so GSRA stepped in to help. Although she has come a long way, she still tries to protect herself if she feels mistreated. Mona Lisa German Shepherd does well with verbal correction and definitely Rescue & Adoptions wants to please, but she is not for the heavyhanded owner, children under ten or other dominant dogs. She is crate trained, house trained, good on leash and very very sweet. For the right owner, she would be the perfect girl. To adopt Mona Lisa, visit www.gsdrescue.org for contact information.n

Goldie
is a small dog, weighing in at 46 lbs. She is a 7 year old female with a very sweet personality and lots of energy. Her foster family says she is a “great” dog who is Triad Golden Retriever Rescue fun to have around. A typical Golden, she is always up and happy and wants to be with her humans. Her prior family said they did not have time to devote to her. She likes to play outside with the foster family dog and is good with children. She is housebroken. She would be perfect for a family who wants a dog they can love a lot and she will love them back even more. If you would like to meet Goldie, please contact us through our website, www. tgrr.org.n

Deedee
Now that rhymes with Jolly and that is exactly what I am. I am just a jolly fella. I am looking for a couch potato to share my world. You see I am about the most laid back Min Pin you are ever going to meet. Oh, I love to go on walks as long as we can take a nap together when we get back. My one and only fault is I am thunder phobic. I really Friends of Penny Min Pin Rescue need another dog for security when it thunders, so unless someone in the home is retired or works from home, I will need a canine buddy to comfort me during storms. But basically I just want to be someone’s loyal, loving companion. Don’t you need someone like me in your life? I mean come on, look at my eyes. Aren’t they just the sweetest you have ever seen?
is a house dog with perfect manners. She does not bark unnecessarily, chew, jump, climb, nor does she beg at the table. She has had professional training because she responds to all commands on a dime. Deedee does NOT play nice in the sand box with other dogs. She needs to be an only four pawed child. However, she has shown no interest We Care Shepherd Rescue in the parrot that has free house roaming privileges. Deedee is 6 years old, spayed, house trained, great with children and all adults. This is a dog with a very sound personality. Deedee is one cool layed back dog with perfect A-1 house manners. She is a treasure to be taken home to keep forever. She would also be perfect for a first time Shepherd owner too.
If you would like to meet me, email my Foster Mom at paula@rescuem-

Serena
was born about October 2009 and is an adorable little tortoiseshell Manx. She was rescued from a hoarding situation where she spent all her time in a cage. So she is much smaller than you’d expect for her age. She is so small, she actually qualifies as a “tea cup Manx”. But she’s perfectly proportioned. Serena adores laps, and likes to curl up next to you in bed also. She will play with Tailless Cat Rescue your fingers when you are typing on the computer, but also likes to play with toys and other cats. She is vaccinated, vetted, wormed, spayed, microchipped and is FeLV/FIV negative. For more information contact Tailless Cat Rescue at taillesscatrescue@ hotmail.com or visit our website at www.taillesscatrescue.com. n
Hairy.
Hi there! I’m Hairy and I am approximately 1-2 years old. I was being used as a long-haired Chihuahua breeder dog (which I’m definitely not) when the puppy mill that I was part of got busted. I’m a very sweet boy and I just love everyone that I come in contact with. I’m learning to use papers inside and also learning how fun it is to go outside and run around with the other foster dogs. I love to play with toys and the other foster dogs and when I’m finished Chihuahua Rescue eating, I love to carry my bowl around in my & Transport mouth. I’m neutered, UTD on shots and on HW preventative. I’m looking for someone with a fenced in back yard and some kids to play with that will give me a forever home.
We love happy endings! Please send us your success stories so that we can share them with our readers. deb@triadhappytails.com or send your success stories to: jennifer@triadhappytails.com
Hairy’s adoption fee is $200. Email wildlifeed2@aol.com or visit www. ncchirescue.petfinder.com for more adoptable chihuahuas in NC. n

Training Article
Stop the Craziness!
—by Adam Witherspoon
Adam has been working with people and their problems with dogs for over 15 years. He is a member of the International Association of Canine Professionals, and has been featured on Fox 8, WXII 12, CBS news, as well as published by many other local news outlets. He has been a training consultant for Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue, helping dogs that many people said couldn’t be helped, and has volunteered with many organizations across the Piedmont Triad. For more information please visit their website, Shiloh K-9 Dog Training Services LLC, www.shilohk9.com.
A
ll of us, at some point and time, have had craziness in our homes caused by our adorable pooch. Big, small, short, tall, every dog has brought this undesirable element into our lives most often at the most inopportune moment. Or have they? Was it the dog that truly caused the craziness? In order to be able to answer that question honestly, we have to examine another question. “Is there something I could have done to prevent the craziness?”
Most crazy cycles are a result of built up energy and boredom, as well as their owners trying to explain or command the dog into compliance. More often than not, the correct answer is YES! My background working with dogs started as an animal control officer with my local Sheriff’s Department. This is a
34
September 2010
job I loathed, and seeing what I saw motivated me strongly to help these dogs with their people problems, so that people’s dogs could get back to filling their roles: As man’s best friend. Craziness comes in cycles. Think of it as a circle if you will. No beginning and no end. It is just there, round and round we go. As people we often are very routine, and not very consistent, which in a dog’s world is not a good thing. This creates the crazy cycle, which will have Fido peeing in the house, jumping on people, chewing up the furniture, and the ever present one, not coming when called. Or officially: chasing the dog for blocks around the neighborhood. What to do? Well first and foremost, stop the insanity, which is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. (You can also refer to an article on my website, Dogs + Insanity = Anarchy). Make changes to Fido’s environment, and take away the routines. Put a leash on him when the door bell rings, and correct the inappropriate behavior. Take away the free time in the house when he is unsupervised, until he proves himself reliable. Take him for a walk. You would
be surprised how few dog owners actually do this ever important step. Most crazy cycles are a result of built up energy and boredom, as well as their owners trying to explain or command the dog into compliance. This will never work, and the more an owner tries, the more they practice insanity. Finally, don’t blame the dog and make them pay the price. More often than not, we as owners cause our dog’s obnoxious behaviors. Before you make the decision to give the dog up, remember your commitment that you made to a living creature when you brought the dog into your home. Get some professional help and learn how to communicate with your dog so they can understand what you want. You will thank yourself in the end.
