ON THE COVER: Mallie and her daughter Moxie had a horrible start in life—they were found chained and left without food or water. They were starving, emaciated and absolutely terrified! Their owner didn’t want them after he’d used them to breed puppies. They’ve been with Ruff Love Rescue for quite a while now, but hope to get their forever home soon. Both are current on vaccinations, spayed, microchipped and treated for heartworms. They are house-trained, crate-trained and will walk on a leash. Cats and other dogs are not a problem, but probably would do best in a home with no small children. If you are interested in adopting one or both of these great girls, visit the Ruff Love website: www.ruffloverescue.com or call: 336-880-5431.

Elizabeth Brumback Eilers, DVM

Katy Beachy, DVM

Dr. Elizabeth Brumback Eilers attended UNC-Chapel Hill as an undergraduate before graduating from North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1999. She enjoys getting to know her patients and their owners and loves the challenge and fun of feline medicine. She and her husband Pat enjoy being outdoors hiking, cycling and camping, as well as anything on the water. They are happy pet parents to a crazy cat named Chuck Norris and a lovable dog named Tsali. Dr. Katy Beachy received a B.S. in Biology at Ohio State University, then continued on to graduate from The OSU College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. In her free time she enjoys spending quality time with her beautiful children (Lexi, Logan, and Lukas) baking, hiking, watching movies, doing art projects, etc. They share their home with five crazy cats: Biscuit, Rosie, Harley, BatCat, and Minion. You can follow her on Instagram at catvetkb to find funny pictures and adoptable kittens.

“MY CAT ATE WHAT?!?!?” As a cat owner and lover have you ever talked to your dog-owning friends about the things their pets have eaten and thought to yourself: “Thank goodness that’s not me!”? There is no emergency foreign body surgery to remove chewed up underwear, a whole roll of duct tape, sea shells, Kongs or any number of other possible nonconsumables that we have seen and heard of dogs eating….because cats don’t do that, right? Wrong! They do - and sometimes they eat things that boggle the mind. “How in the world did they swallow THAT?!?!” One cat had such a penchant for curling ribbon that he

had to go to surgery not once, but twice, to remove eight to ten feet of curling ribbon from his stomach. A child’s balloon left unattended became the source for the second ingestion. Truth is, cats are notorious for eating things that have no business in their GI tracts - from the above mentioned ribbon, to shoe laces, rope, dental floss, sewing thread (with needles on the other end!), a child’s pretty necklace of fishing line strung with colorful beads, knee high panty hose, hair bands and pony tail holders and the dreaded tinsel and Easter grass are all examples of things that can lead to problems for the overly curious cat. Even a cat’s own fur can lodge in the intestines and cause a foreign body obstruction. Unfortunately, cat toys themselves can pose a threat to cats too. The strings from feather toys, stuffing out of catnip toys, and plastic spiky balls (as pictured below) can be ingested and lead to serious complications if not removed. The best way to protect our furry friends from themselves is to use string-related toys in a supervised setting only, putting them out of reach when you are done playing. Yarn and other string-like objects should never be left lying around. Not all cats seem to have the desire to eat strange objects, so knowing the personality of your own cat can help you determine what needs to be put away to keep them safe. If you suspect your cat has eaten something, the sooner he is seen by a veterinarian the better. Sometimes the objects can pass safely through in the cat’s stool (the picture of the needle and thread below is one crazy example that is still scary to think about!) Sometimes the objects can be removed endoscopically, but other times, if the cat does not pass the item on its own, or begins vomiting, showing signs of pain or lethargy, exploratory surgery is required. If you see ribbon or another string-like object dangling from your cat’s hind end, do not pull it! Doing so can be extremely dangerous. You can cut the string shorter and bring him to the vet. Also, if you catch your cat in the process of swallowing something, care must be taken in removing it, as some things such as ribbon can act like a knife and cause serious damage. Here is a list of other strange objects that we have removed from cats’ GI tracts: coins, a plastic chair skid, a nice big tube of fish flavored aluminum foil three days after a client had a fish fry, an entire bag of pony tail holders, pieces of tape, a tiny plastic dinosaur toy, a baby bottle nipple, a foam ear plug, five elastic hair bands, and many items that just could not be identified.

336-545-3390 2449 Battleground Ave., Greensboro www.catclinicofgreensboro.com See our ad on page 10.

Pictured below: the spiky plastic ball in the stomach (1) and after removal (2) (along with a lot of hair), a shoe lace (3), a sewing needle (4 & 5) (swallowed 3 days before he came to see us, and passed safely in his stool, thank goodness).

Cover Story

I thank God every day for my good health and ability to be able to care for these animals. It is a 365 day, 7 day a week, 24 hour a day labor of love. The rewards far outweigh the disappointments. I have a deep passion and commitment to continue this mission. If you have any idea of the love and joy that dogs can bring, you can understand what keeps me going. I certainly have those days of doubt, but I just reach out and hug a dog. I remember their story and know it is all worth it.

—Sue Rogers, founder, Ruff Love Rescue

Ruff Love Rescue “Saving Lives Since 1999” by Sue Rogers

“My name is Mallie, and I’ve been with Ruff Love Rescue for quite a while now. I love my foster family and they adore me, but we’re all hoping I’ll get my forever home soon. My daughter Moxie and I had a horrible start in life—we were found chained and left without food or water. We were starving, emaciated and absolutely terrified! Our owner didn’t want us after he’d used us both to breed puppies, and planned to use us as bait dogs. I don’t know what that means, but it sounds scary. He surrendered us when he was told the authorities would be called and he’d be charged with animal cruelty. Ruff Love Rescue took us to the vet and we’ve had our shots, been spayed, microchipped and treated for heartworms. My foster family is wonderful and they’ve been teaching us how to live in a home and how to trust again. I’ve learned how to walk on a loose leash, I’m cratetrained and house-trained. Sometimes a ghost from the past scares me and I need extra patience and reassurance, so I’d probably do better in a home without small children. I get along with cats and other dogs, but I’m shy at first. Once I warm up, I love to run and jump—I’m told I’m very athletic. I wonder if I’ll meet my forever family today? I sure hope so! When I find my home, my foster family will be able to 12

help another dog. That would make me so happy—no dog should be neglected and abused the way we were. We’re so thankful that Ruff Love saved us.” Thanks, Mallie

Mallie and Moxie are just two of the hundreds of dogs that Ruff Love Rescue has saved since it was founded by Sue Rogers in 1999. Ruff Love is a no-kill, 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization that is completely funded by donations, and run entirely by volunteers. We have grown from about 20 dogs in the beginning to well over 100 dogs at present. We do not turn dogs away because of medical problems, and all dogs are fully vetted before being placed for adoption. Our dogs are spayed or neutered, up-to-date on all vaccinations, microchipped, and given a six-month ProHeart injection to prevent heartworms. Our dogs are kept in foster homes, where our foster parents are able to observe the dog’s personality and behavior in a home environment. Dogs are socialized with other dogs and pets in the household, as well as at adoption fairs and events. This makes it easier to match the right dog to the right home.

What’s new Last year, we added a cat division. Feline Friends of Ruff Love Rescue is a small but growing group, and our focus

September 2015 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

is on finding forever homes for current fosters and helping control cat overpopulation by spaying/neutering.

Want to help? As the rescue has grown, so have our needs—vet bills are our largest operating expense. Every day we get emails, calls and messages asking for help, and our work never stops because there is always another life to save. We are always looking for more people to adopt and foster, but our biggest problem is that we don’t have the money to save them all. Most of the dogs we save would still be homeless, in pain, tied to chains or worse—dead. Donations are tax-deductible under IRS rules. Every dollar counts when it comes to saving animals’ lives! Fostering is one of the greatest ways you can impact an animal’s life, and Ruff Love is always looking for more fosters! Although it can sometimes be challenging, bringing a dog into your home allows them to develop into a more adoptable dog. This may be their first experience in a loving home, and with the foster’s guidance, they learn the skills needed to be a part of the family. House-training is typically the number one priority for adopting families and if the dog is provided a good head start, they are usually more successful in their forever home. Socialization and leash

walking enhance a dog’s desirability. When you foster for Ruff Love, you provide the food, the love and guidance. Any vet costs are paid by us. Volunteer opportunities are abundant with Ruff Love and we would love to have you! We hold adoption fairs at least once a month, and we need people to walk the dogs and to talk with prospective adopters. Having many different volunteers also helps our dogs in developing socialization skills. The more people a dog meets and interacts with, the better equipped they will be in their new home. Fundraisers happen frequently with Ruff Love and are a great opportunity to volunteer as well. With all of the expenses involved in dog rescue, fundraising is an ongoing and important part of what we do. Our adoption fee most often does not come close to covering the expenses involved in getting the dog ready for adoption. Fundraising allows us to keep helping the next dog. Fundraisers are a

way for us to raise much needed funds while having a lot of fun! If you’re interested in adopting your new best friend, fostering or volunteering, let us know!

Napoleon. Who’s looking for one of the sweetest dogs ever? Look no further we have found him! Allow us to introduce Napoleon, a 2 year-old mixed breed who is looking for his forever home. Napoleon came wandering up as a terrified stray and has really blossomed in foster care. He is great with other dogs and kids and is currently living with dogs of all sizes and young children. When found, Napoleon The Fort Rescue was terrified of even a leash, but now is excellent on leash and has excelled at commands. Napoleon is neutered and up-to-date on his shots. He’s crate-trained, very smart, and full of love. He can sit, lay, and roll over. For more information, contact thefortrescue@gmail.com. n

Humane Society of Davie County I am a heartworm survivor who has a lot of love to give people. I am a good walker and I love to cuddle up next to people for attention. I would be best around kids over five years old since I am a big boy. I have experience working with veterans and some dog training experience. During my last stay at HSDC, I was a staff favorite. Even Our House Pets Can Pick Up Intestinal Parasites When our dogs and cats are part of our family we often forget that they still have some animal habits that put them at risk for picking up intestinal parasites. It is important that we recognize these risks for both our pets’ health and for the health and protection of the rest of the family cuddling in bed with them. The Companion Animal Parasite Council recommends we check our pet’s stool twice yearly by microscopic examination for evidence of intestinal parasites. Below are listed some of the common intestinal parasites we see, how your house pet may pick them up and a few key points about why it is important. Lastly there are a few tips for minimizing your pet’s risk. Roundworms: These are seen in even the most well cared for of pets because their larvae are very hardy and can remain infective for years in the environment. Pets pick these up from infected dirt or eating a host such as a bird, rodent or even earthworms. Think about how often your dog may come in with dirty paws from its potty break and lick its paws to get them clean, play with a cute puppy while taking a walk in the neighborhood, or even try to chew on your hiking shoes from over the weekend. Has your cat ever groomed the dog that goes outside, played in a pot of flowers inside, or much less had a serious bug hunting episode in your house or up the curtains! These are very normal, ‘clean’ activities our house pets do, but can be an opportunity for them to pick up those microscopic parasite eggs and larvae. Roundworms cause the most severe problems in our puppies and kittens but even adult pets can suffer irritation of the intestine and stomach with occasional diarrhea or vomiting. This parasite is of high interest for families with children because it is transmissible if children put contaminated dirt or objects in their mouth. The larvae can travel not only in the intestines, but can also move through other organs such

as the liver, lungs and eyes causing permanent damage and even death if they damage the nervous system. Google ‘ocular larval migrans’ and you can understand the importance of keeping this in mind as a public health concern and keeping your pet parasite-free for your kids’ sake. Whipworms: These also remain infective for years in the environment. In a recent study 10% of dogs that presented to a veterinary teaching hospital tested positive for these worms, as well as over 14% of shelter dogs. Often, infestations don’t cause symptoms but some animals experience bloody diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, dehydration and death. Hookworms: Also spread from ingestion of larvae from a contaminated environment or host (such as a cockroach!) or penetration of the skin. Sometimes irritation is seen on the paws especially between the toes. These larvae only last in the soil for a few months, however, if your pet becomes infested the adults may live in their intestine for 4-24 months! In the intestines, the parasite creates small bleeding ulcers where they feed. Gardeners and children who play in areas where pets defecate are at risk of being infected, usually by penetration of the skin. In most people, the worm migrates within the skin causing severe itching and lesions, though we can also get infections in our intestines like dogs if the contaminated material is accidently ingested or the larvae migrate. Tapeworms: We commonly see tapeworms in our pets after they have had fleas since they act as hosts. Tapeworms can also be picked up by eating other animals’ fecal material, lice or an infected rodent. Children can pick up this parasite from ingesting an infected flea causing a mild diarrhea. Cats are such fastidious groomers that they often bite and eat a flea before we even are aware of a flea problem in a home or screened in porch, etc. The hunters cats are, can also put them at risk of catching a mouse that may have entered your home through a small opening without you even knowing (mice can enter in spaces as small as a quarter!). Other parasites seen in fecal tests: There are other common parasites we pick up on fecal exams such as giardia and coccidia. Most giardia of pets is not thought to be transmissible to people as is the typically species specific coccidia puppies and kittens often carry, but toxoplasma gondii is a very important type of coccidia of cats that can be transmitted to people. Toxoplasma gondii causes significant inflammation and can cause birth defects in developing fetuses. If pregnant women are going to be cleaning a cat’s litter box, it is important to clean it at least every 24 hours, before the organism reaches its infective stage. So between the stool checks your pet receives to deworm for any specific parasites they may have picked up by killing that bug in your house or playing in the yard, here are a few tips to minimize them from getting an infestation. Pick up the feces from your yard daily before it contaminates the soil, wash any raw fruits/veggies you may feed, don’t let your pet drink out of standing or run off water. Keeping your cats indoors certainly decreases the risk of picking up parasites from hunting (though as pointed out there are still windows of opportunity for indoor kitties too). Check with your veterinarian before putting your pet on a raw meat diet. Further, keep little ones safe by keeping sandboxes covered. Try to have separate areas of the yard where the children can play that the dogs are not contaminating. Follow leash laws and clean up after your pet to keep everyone safer. Carlos, born May 1, 2015,

Jo Jo

was once a man of the streets. As a young kitten he was always searching for his next meal and hoping that he could sleep in a warm bed at night. Lucky for Carlos he was rescued and now he is living out part of his dreams. He loves that food is in abundance, toys are never ending and the bed is always soft and full of warmth. Now Carlos is seeking a forever home. He dreams of a home where he can cuddle in his favorite lap, purr while his human pets him, and snuggle up next to his family on the couch. Carlos is a dreamer and he knows that his day will come. Do you think you can help make the dreams of this kitten come true?

was born March 20, 2015. She is a pretty little girl who loves to eat, and she especially loves to have her back scratched. She plays hard with her brother, Toby, and she takes her foster mom’s other cats and small dog in stride. Jo Jo almost constantly purrs and she often enjoys watching TV. This beautiful little girl is a great kitten to have.

Toby

Huck,

was born March 20, 2015. He is best described as ante angel with a shot of mischief in him. He plays hard, and can entertain himself with his toys or by playing with his best pal, sister Jo Jo, or with his foster mom’s small dog. He is also okay with other cats around. When he is all played out, he is a cuddle bug, and loves to cuddle up close to his foster mom. This little angel with a shot of mischief is a real cutie pie.

rescued from the busy streets of Greensboro where he was dodging traffic, is loving the posh life of foster living. Born around early July 2014, Huck is a lover boy who is a friend to all (human friends and four-legged friends). He’s a Shepherd-Lab mix who would love to meet you, show you his newly learned “sit”, then wiggle his way into your heart. Huck is confused as to why he hasn’t been adopted. Can you tell that face why he is still an ARFP pup instead of someone’s forever? Huck was rescued in February and has been with ARFP since. He is close to completing his first round of basic education classes at Petsmart and will soon start the second round. Approximately 60 lbs., he’s neutered, up-to-date on shots and ready for YOU.

Marlowe.

hails from outside of Burlington, NC and is a chunky little guy with a sweet demeanor. He was born in June, has one brother, and is looking for a family to love on him. Jake is being crate-trained and house-trained and is coming along nicely. He is a Shepherd mix, but we have not decided on what type of mix. Jake sleeps all night in his crate and loves people. He might be the perfect pup for you!

Sweet, loving, cuddly and playful. Meet Marlowe, the princess of all things beautiful! Marlowe was born on March 15th, 2015, in Randolph County. She is being fostered with an ARFP volunteer who is teaching her all about the luxurious life where meals are served on time, toys are in abundance, and kisses are never ending. Marlowe loves playtime with furry mice, jingle balls and anything that smells of catnip. Marlowe has had her first kitten shot, is Feleuk negative and will soon be ready for her forever home. Geronimo

Sulli

came to us when his previous owner could no longer care for him. Geronimo is absolutely awesome. Our trainer reports that he is smart, sweet, fun and willing. Geronimo is not your typical 3 year old. Not a mean bone in his body, just tons of fun and entertainment. We think with a bit of training he can do anything - jump, barrel race, trail ride, anything! He loves attention and is willing to try anything we ask of him.

is a 14 year old quarter horse who came to us when his owners could no longer afford his care. He had to have an eye removed due to a mass that had grown on it but he has now healed and looks great. Horses generally do just fine after losing one eye. Sulli is doing well under saddle at a walk. He is wearing only a halter and lead rope and would probably be happiest as a trail horse. Our trainer thinks that Sulli would be happiest with an adopter who enjoys natural horsemanship, as he seems to respond well to that type of training.

Gilmore

Gherkin

was adopted about a year ago. Unfortunately, the family found out they were moving out of the country and could not take him with them. So Gilmore came back to us and is looking for a new home. He does great with other dogs. Gilmore does OK with the right cat that will hold their ground with him. Gilmore is crate trained and only seems to bark when he needs to go out or when he hasn’t had enough exercise. Gilmore is an active boy that needs either a daily romp in the backyard, a good walk/ run or an active on-the-go lifestyle with his family.

is one of our “Pickle Litter!” She is an absolute doll. Pickles (her mom) came to Red Dog Farm after being rescued by a very nice family. She was found suffering from heat stroke about 2 months ago with a litter of day old kittens. Based on her temperature upon arriving at the vet’s office, we don’t think Mom or her kittens would have made it much longer. Thanks to the family and medical staff’s quick thinking, the entire family is now doing great. They are now enjoying the finer things in life, like air conditioning. The kittens are growing like weeds and are now ready to go to their new homes!

Sadly, their owner was killed in a car accident earlier this year. This bonded pair have always been together and we would love to have them adopted together if possible. Dixie is a Boxer mix and Sugar a Terrier mix, both are about 6 years old. They are house-trained, well-behaved and friendly with all people. They love to play ball and go on walks. These are truly two great girls who are up-to-date on shots, spayed and heartworm negative.

Training Your Pet

OBEDIENCE:

The Backbone of All Dog Competitions by Pat Muhammad, Carolina Dog Training Club

I

was at a dog show over the weekend. The main competition was a breed show, however, they also offered Canine Good Citizen testing, My Dog Can Do That agility training, and dog diving. As I was watching all the different activities it occurred to me that they all had one thing in common. The dogs required some form of obedience. With the breed show, the dogs have to obey the handler as he or she runs down the mat to show off the dog’s gate. The dog has to stand still while watching his handler, allowing the judge to examine and observe the dog’s stature. All this requires obedience for the dog to do the various requirements. The Canine Good Citizen test has 10 requirements which the dog and handler have to complete, all requiring obedience: 1) Accepting a friendly stranger- The dog must allow a stranger to approach his handler. 2) Sitting politely for petting- The dog must sit still and allow a stranger to touch it. 3) Appearance and grooming- The dog must let someone brush it, look in its ears, and pick up its front paws. 4) Out for a walk- The dog and handler must do a heeling pattern with stops and turns along the way. 5) Walking through a crowd- The dog and handler must walk around people and dogs. 6) Sit and down on command and staying in place- The dog must go down on command, sit on command, and stay in place while the handler walks away and returns. 7) Coming when called- The dog must stay while the handler walks out 10 feet and calls the dog. 8) Reaction to another dog- The dog and handler must be able to walk up to another dog and handler, stop, shake hands and continue on. The dog is not allowed to visit with the other dog. 9) Reaction to distraction- There will be some sort of noise or visual distraction which the dog must be able to ignore. 10) Supervised separation- The dog should be able to be out of the handler’s sight without getting too anxious for 3 minutes. In order to complete the Canine Good Citizen test, the dog must be able to sit, down, heel and stay which are all parts of obedience training.

My Dog Can Do That is an AKC introduction to agility. This course was set up to show handlers and dogs different parts of an agility course. The dogs must stay until they are told to go over a jump. They have to jump through a tire and jump up on a table and sit. The dogs go through a circular tunnel and a tunnel shoot and go over a wooden A-frame and a teeter-totter. There are also weave poles which the dogs have to weave through. All of these exercises are done with the lure of food or a toy and the handler’s voice persuasion. The dogs must be obedient and not run all over the ring. Dog diving is a sport that is done by a dog jumping into a large pool of water. The dog must stay until the handler throws a toy and tells the dog to go. The main objective is for the dog to jump as far as possible to retrieve the toy. Here again, obedience is required as the dog must stay until told to jump. Rally is done on a course that has signs which contain skills that the handler must read and have their dog perform. The dog and handler go from sign to sign and complete each action that is written on the signs, which consists of a variety of sits, downs, heeling, weaving, and circles. All of these activities are obedience exercises. Obedience trials have several different levels, starting with the basic sit, down, heel, recall and stay. The next level requires going over jumps and retrieving a dumbbell along with heeling and outof-sight sit and down stays. The utility level adds retrieving the one correct glove out of three, and retrieving both a metal scent article and a leather scent article containing specific numbers. The dog must also go over a bar jump and a high jump based on the handler’s direction. All these levels require much training and a steady sit stay. Even the hunting trials require that a dog stay until it is told to retrieve. As you can see from the different dog competitions listed above, obedience is a basic requirement for all of the competitions. You can begin your basic obedience training with Carolina Dog Training Club. Our next set of classes start at the end of September, so visit our website at www.carolinadogtrainingclub.com to print an application and get started on your obedience training, or call us at (336) 273-8828. Meg was born on 3/1/12 and weighs 7 Lbs. She is a very sweet dog with significant trust issues and is afraid of being picked up or petted. Meg gets along great with her foster brothers and sisters and is very sociable with them. She is playful and can even be a little bossy. Due to her trust issues, she Chihuahua Rescue hasn’t been out in public yet. Her progress is slow, but nonetheless, she is progressing which makes her foster family feel very positive for her future. Meg is 80% housetrained and pee pad trained. She is up-to-date on shots, spayed, on heartworm preventative and microchipped. Meg would not do well in a home with small children. She came from a hoarding situation and has a deformed front leg. She’s a great dog with tons of personality that hides behind her trust issues. Her foster family sees her as a spunky personality and truly enjoys their time with her. If you have patience and are willing to work with her, Meg will make a fantastic dog. If you think that you might be interested in Meg, call 276-647-3714 and ask for Stephanie Cooley or Sharon Lawson. n

Certified Vet

Ivy is just about the most gentle soul you could ever meet. We can’t imagine how someone could leave her locked up to do nothing but breed, then when done with her just leave her locked in a crate and move away. Presently, Ivy is an only dog in a foster home. She’s recovering and getting stronger, Ruff Love Rescue but what she really needs is a home of her own with a soft bed and all the love that she can get. She asks for so little and just follows her foster mom around when she is home from work. We would also consider a long term foster with a person who could be home with her most of the time. We are slowly getting her all up-to-date with the vet and do not want to overwhelm her. She is slowly gaining weight but we are careful to not overfeed her. She eats every meal as if she won’t get another. We just love her and want the best for her. Ivy’s adoption fee is $150. Please contact us at rlrdogs@gmail.com with any questions. n

Raven has such a GREAT personality – she gets along with absolutely everyone she meets. Raven loves people of all sizes, kids, other dogs, cats, you name it. She likes to go for walks but also loves finding a soft Stepping Stones Canine Rescue dog bed or a cool air vent to plop down in front of. She plays the part of couch potato well. Raven would fit well into a variety of situations. She’s approximately 2 years old and 40 lbs. and won’t get any bigger. Zeeva & Mescha came to us from a family that was going through an especially difficult divorce. These two Dobergirls are inseparable and will of course need to go as a pair, but that having been said, what a lovely addition to a home they will make. Coming from what had been for most of their lives a loving home, they are very well adjusted, in good health and at ease. There’s a strong bond between them, and they pretty well do everything in unison.

Hella is a beautiful 6 year old, red sable, working line Shepherd, imported from Germany. She had a wonderful life. Hella trained, lived and loved her owner. Unfortunately, her owner became very sick and passed away, leaving Hella alone. She ended up in the shelter, and GSRA couldn’t let that be her end. Hella is very well mannered, knows several commands, and is very intelligent. She loves to play fetch and needs to play several times every day to get her energy out. Hella would do best with an owner who has experience with the working lines. German Shepherd Rescue & Adoptions

The four animals featured on this page are just a few that were recently pulled out of the Guilford County Animal Shelter. There were many other animal rescue organizations that took both dogs and cats into their programs. Then there are other groups at maximum capacity, unable to take in more homeless animals than they already have. A big thank you to all these rescue groups, to volunteers and foster homes everywhere. Please support our local rescue organizations! And, please spay/neuter your pet so we may end the pet overpopulation epidemic in our area.

Mistletoe is a great, small Lab. She is so friendly, and seems to get along really well with everyone - people, other dogs and cats too. She loves to play with other dogs, and would probably do best in a home with a fenced yard, and another canine buddy to share it with. Mistletoe is about 18 months old and around 38 pounds (she needs a little dieting! :). She is so very sweet, but might be a Juliet’s House Rescue little too lively for very young children. You should see her eyes - she just wants some love! Please contact Juliet’s House at rfjg2903@bellsouth.net if you would like more information! n

Special Feature

Happy Tails Abound at Rescue Ranch by Rescue Ranch

A nonprofit animal welfare organization located in Statesville, North Carolina The pet overpopulation epidemic is so staggering that for every animal born in the United States to have a home, every human being would have to own six dogs and nine cats. So, in actuality, a family of four… two parents and two small children would have to own 24 dogs and 36 cats. It costs U.S. taxpayers an estimated two billion each year to round up, house, euthanize and dispose of homeless animals.

Founded by Krissie Newman and her husband, NASCAR driver Ryan Newman, the dynamic couple has a passion for animals and the environment.

Rescue Ranch and Its Mission - With a long-standing enthusiasm for helping animals, the Newmans founded Rescue Ranch in 2012. An easy drive from the Triad, Rescue Ranch promotes respect for all animals as well as agricultural, environmental and wildlife conservation; and facilitates rehabilitation, rescue and responsible pet ownership in order to enhance the human-animal bond. The 87-acre facility welcomes guests interested in humane education programs and animal rescue services. In the future, Rescue Ranch will introduce its Rescue Adoption and Boarding facility and a 24-hour emergency veterinary clinic with specialty services.

50+ Happy Tails - The Rescue Ranch team attends to a variety of happy tails including rabbits, birds, bearded dragons, tortoises, snakes, fainting goats and the most interesting Holstein cow. As the official VIPs on site, these animals require a lot of time and attention. Between daily feedings, cleaning cages and stalls and appearances for special guests, these critters maintain a busy schedule. Most recently, Rescue Ranch adopted two chinchillas, six goats and two miniature horses from Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network, a nonprofit dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating neglected, abused or otherwise unwanted animals in and around Guilford County. With the additional residents from Red Dog Farm, a total of 50 critters roam the range and education center at Rescue Ranch. Each has a unique personality and plays a critical role in the humane education programs.

Importance of Humane Education Humane education teaches people compassion and respect for animals and their environments as well as skills and suggestions for living peacefully with them. Rescue Ranch’s education programs coach animal lovers’ skills while offering a variety of activities to provide direction and instruction in animal behavior and habitats, the importance Rescue Ranch is a 501 (C) (3) nonprofit animal welfare organization formed in North Carolina in January 2012. The Ranch conducts a variety of programs aimed at fulfilling its primary goal of ending pet overpopulation and associated suffering by promoting and providing for the humane care, protection and control of domestic animals.

of rescue and adoption of animals and responsible pet ownership. “It’s so important for people to educate themselves on the animal and associated care before bringing it into their families,” said Newman. “Puppies will get big, vet bills can be expensive and some birds and reptiles can outlive their owners. Knowing these things ahead of time creates a more responsible pet owner.” In addition, Rescue Ranch offers a variety of year-round programming for children. The ranch is a great choice for school field trips. Based on common core standards, programs are developed by a licensed teacher to offer hands-on animal encounters and interactive activities for students. If you have a preschooler, consider joining us on Mondays or Tuesdays for story time, crafts and time with an animal. Also of great education value is the Rescue Ranch Homeschool Club, a program designed specifically for children in kindergarten through sixth grade that are homeschooled. Through a variety of activities and hands-on science exploration, students learn science, reading, writing and math integration. Each summer, Rescue Ranch offers “Critter Camps” to children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The week long camp sessions provide hands-on educational experiences and build upon a child’s interest for animals with fur, feathers or scales. The animal experiences, crafts, games and activities are excellent opportunities to let your feathers fly with animal fun. Rescue Ranch has a variety of fun-learning opportunities that involve the critters we love so. Explore today.

“In almost two years of being open, Rescue Ranch has made an impact not only on me but the hearts of our volunteers and the community,” said Krissie. “It’s apparent that an organization like ours is much needed and we’re just getting started.”
