ou may have noticed our cover is a bit different this month. Normally, our covers feature an adoptable animal from one of our local groups or shelters. This month we decided to slightly change our format. Our cover story is so powerful, we just had to give it recognition on the cover. The cute pup is, or course, adoptable from the SPCA, but the two young men are “trainers” working with the dogs. Together they are doing something very positive for our community, please take a moment to read what Frankie Heath, her staff and these young people are accomplishing. Fall is fast approaching and our calendar now fills almost two pages. Be sure to check out all the events, fund-raisers and adoption fairs all around the Triad. With the cooler temps, we can all get out and enjoy a great weekend with some nice folks, products, services and most importantly, animals looking for forever homes. We are adding a bit more editorial to each issue, and we hope you are enjoying the heartwarming and sometimes heartrending

stories submitted by local people. Our goal is to, “keep it local” in terms of adoptions, articles and events whenever possible. We want to Deb Printup Jennifer Frazier welcome any of our readers to submit articles for publishing, when space allows. he first impression you get when pulling into the parking lot at 710 Huffine Mill Road in Greensboro, is a sense of the protective spirit of the giant Oak trees that dominate the landscape. Nestled under those gentle giants are fenced areas that hold the keys to a brighter future. Laughter, barks and the voices of the staff drift out over the soft breeze, welcoming you to an extraordinary refuge for kids and dogs. Something special is growing there, giving one a feeling of hope for the future. The Oaks are a metaphor for the protective spirits of Frankie Heath, Founder and President of People & Paws 4 Hope (PP4H), Leslie Heffernan, Second Chance Program Director and Beth Alexander, (The Dog Connection) Second Chance Trainer. “Together we are better.” This is the descriptive motto of the local non-profit, People & Paws 4 Hope (PP4H), based in Greensboro, dedicated to serving the people and animals of Guilford County and improving the community through its youthcentered programs. PP4H has recently moved into a new facility in Greensboro, a building that once housed a polio hospital during an epidemic 12

in the late 1940s. One would not recognize the building today. Before PP4H moved in, the place was a mess. Peeling paint, layers of accumulated dirt and grimy windows exuded a sense of disrepair and broken dreams. The hard working staff and tireless volunteers brought the place back to life and restored its dignity, just as they strive to restore the dignity and hope of human and canine lives. Frankie Heath recognizes a pattern emerging, saying that, “This building once served the children of Greensboro as a polio hospital, now it is serving the children again”. The renewed facility has space for meeting and gathering of program participants and volunteers, office space, room to house dogs currently in the program, outdoor space for dog training, and Heath says, “there is still plenty of room to grow” The building is centrally located near the neighborhoods it serves most and has an open door policy with past participants so that it may serve as a safe space and feel as much like another home as possible. Prior to founding PP4H, Heath served as program director for North Carolina Department of Corrections “A New Leash on Life” in which prison inmates work with and train shelter dogs.

After working with the prison inmate program, Heath realized that she was only working at the end of the problem, and that real success could only be found through starting at the beginning with the youth who might someday become the prison population without intervention. Each of the following new programs were designed by Heath especially for PP4H. The programs specifically target different age groups of at-risk youth in the community. —The Second Chance Program began in 2011 and is designed for at-risk youth ages 12 to 17 years old who must complete court-ordered community service after being charged with minor to moderately serious offenses. Participants serve their community service by training shelter dogs to increase their adoptability making it possible for more local dogs to find forever homes. The program partners each child directly with a dog for whom they must evaluate and set future goals. This allows each participant the opportunity to really see the progress his or her dog is making and feel the success of achieving

the set goals. After about three weeks of working with a dog, program participants write recommendations for the dog’s future owner about the type of training the dog has received and how the future owner can best work with the dog after adoption. The smiling faces, coupled with the obvious affection that can be seen shining in those young eyes, speak volumes about the success of this far reaching program. —Kids, K9s, & the Future, is a new program PP4H is preparing to begin for local youth. It will be a reading program for young students, ages Pre-K to 8 years old, who have not reached reading proficiency due to circumstances both at home and in the classroom. Students who participate in the program will read with therapy dogs and receive a book and a

photograph of their dog after completion which will allow them to start building a library of books of their own. —PP4H’s Newest Project is to design a new program as a continuation of the Second Chance program. Program graduates would teach peers in the community about responsible pet ownership. This program would be designed to keep program graduates connected to PP4H to minimize their risk of re-offending. Through these multiple programs, PP4H is hoping to reach local youth of every age. In addition, PP4H has introduced program participants to members of the community such as police officers and their canine counterparts, who are invested in their success. Heath explains that if the youth are aware of and know members of

the community and what the community expects of them, they are more likely to become productive members of the community. Heath says, “The problems in our community often start with people, but the solutions can also start with people.” As she gathers together the local youth and community members and meets them with a common goal, she shows the community as a whole that together we will succeed and together we are truly better. Elizabeth Eilers, DVM Dr. Elizabeth Eilers is a Greensboro native and a 1999 graduate of NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine. She has been at the Cat Clinic since 2003 and became the owner in 2010. Before moving back to Greensboro, Dr. Eilers practiced small animal and emergency medicine in Wilmington, NC and Southern California.

HYPERTENSION IN CATS Did you know your cat can develop hypertension or high blood pressure? Hypertension, a disease that is seen more commonly in older cats, is also called “the silent killer” because there may not be any clinical signs until significant damage has occurred. Hypertension can be a primary disease with no known underlying cause, but more commonly, it occurs secondary to other diseases such as kidney disease, hyperthyroidism or heart disease.

The prognosis sometimes depends on the severity of the underlying disease. Medications are also prescribed to help lower your cat’s blood pressure and can be taken in pill form or compounded into chewables or liquids for ease of administration.

What are the clinical signs of hypertension? Because hypertension occurs frequently with other diseases, owners may notice more of the symptoms associated with those diseases. Many times there are no direct clinical signs of hypertension, but some cats become more vocal, especially at night. With advanced hypertension, cats may experience vision problems, including sudden blindness. Their pupils may appear dilated all the time, they may bump into things or they may be more reluctant to jump. Some owners report their cats just seem “off.” If left untreated, hypertension can lead to blindness, bleeding in the brain, seizures and organ failure.

How do you measure my cat’s blood pressure? There are several methods that can be used, but most commonly, we measure the systolic pressure using a pediatric cuff on the front leg or the tail. This is a painless, well-tolerated procedure and usually only takes a few minutes during your cat’s examination. It is important that your cat be relaxed during the procedure because their blood pressure can be affected by anxiety (similar to “white coat syndrome” in people). If your cat’s blood pressure is borderline or significantly high, we may repeat the measurements another time to see if the elevation is real or related to stress.

(we have two animals named Max) is all boy. He loves to play and run and chase and wrestle. He likes to chase all the other cats and is in play mode all the time. Every few days Max goes into cuddle mode and needs a lap to cuddle and nap in. Basically - he is like a little boy - all energy and play. Max is going to be a big cat and has a long, sleek body. He is one of those cats that loves to “make biscuits”. Max was found in the middle of I-40 on a busy Friday night last August 2012 when a kind, young guy pulled over and picked him up. Paris lost her home when her owners could no longer care for her and she came into the Animal Rescue & Foster Program. She is a real sweetie and will be a great addition to any family. Paris is almost crate-trained and is working on house-training. She gets along with cats, dogs, and children.

little orphan Annie! She’s 6 months old and has never had a forever home to call her own. Sort of like the movie. We’re guessing that Annie is maybe part Border Collie or part Aussie although at 6 months old she is under 25 lbs. Annie is a Team player and gets along with everyone and everything. e looked at me and his eyes said, “I’m going home with you.” I didn’t really know why I had gone to the Guilford County Animal Shelter that day but when I saw him I knew he must be the reason. So I told him that I was going to visit all the dogs but that I’d be back to see him when I finished. I did go back and I adopted him that day. Four days later, he went home with me. That was fourteen years ago and he has had me wrapped around his paw ever since. His name is Cirrus, like the clouds, because of his one skyblue eye. Mixed with Australian Shepherd and something fuzzy, he is the most unusual dog, the most “human” dog I have ever known and he has tried my patience countless times over the years. When he was young, he delighted in slipping his collar and taking off like the wind through the neighborhood. I have chased him and screamed for him till I was hoarse and thought that he was gone for good a time or two. I finally learned to put a harness on him. He could always figure out how to get out of any type of confinement. I bought an extra tall pet gate. I discovered his love for deviled eggs and I learned to push the dish farther away from the edge of the kitchen counter. I also learned not to leave a cheeseburger unattended on the dining room table. From the beginning, he did whatever he wanted to do...and he still does. There is no doubt that he rules my household even to this day. Cirrus has shared his home with several other dogs throughout the years. His very best friend was a Border Collie mix by the name of Bodie who sadly died at six years old. I believe with all my heart that Cirrus still misses him greatly. Quite often

I find him lying beside the box where we have Bodie’s ashes. He has tolerated an elderly Lab mix and a young Beagle. He presently coexists with his “brother”, Hardie, a Basset mix, and his “sister”, Muffin, a Beagle mix. Cirrus will soon be fifteen years old and was recently diagnosed with kidney failure. I don’t know how much time we have left to spend with him but I will love him every minute and do all I can for him until the end. Louis was surrendered to a shelter when his family could no longer afford his care. At 7 years old, Louis found himself homeless and begging for love. In the shelter he was a typical Dachshund, but began cage-guarding, so AHDR was called in! Louis has been nothing but a total lovebug to his foster parents, never aggressive towards them, but feels the need to protect them. Fun with Fostering or “Clyde and the Metal Monster” “Are you out of your mind? You already have three cats in your care, one of whom is special needs! You’re insane to take on a fourth!”, my inner voice screamed at me. Yet, there he was – eight years old and homeless, the love and companionship of the only human he had ever known ripped away by cancer. “He” was a handsome tabby Manx mix named Clyde. Tailless Cat Rescue (TCR), the small group with which I volunteer, had actually stepped forward to help Clyde, who was at high risk of Clyde being euthanized. Unfortunately, through no fault of Clyde’s the first foster home wasn’t working out and TCR’s main foster home was closed to new cats thanks to a ringworm fungus problem. At this point, all eyes turned to me.

Well, I’m a pushover for an older animal in need, so it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that Clyde would end up fostering at my home. He spent the first week secluded in my Florida room with all the comforts, able to see and smell my three cats through the French doors, but everyone safe from physical interaction. Introductions gradually took place later on and considering all he had been through Clyde did very well and was even becoming something of a lap cat. Nonetheless he needed time to relax and adjust to his new environment, so one particular household chore was postponed – vacuuming. Now lest you think this meant sacrificing a Martha Stewart certification for good house keeping on my part, let me be honest. I HATE vacuuming! In fact, for me scrubbing toilets is a walk through paradise compared to cranking up the old wind machine. So, Clyde’s arrival was the perfect excuse for putting off this heinous task.

Even so, the day finally arrived when the sight of a herd of cat-hair wildebeests migrating across the Serengeti of my hardwood floors was just too much to bear. Out came the “metal monster”. Now let’s face it, most vacuum cleaners make noise, even a decent machine like mine. Wildebeests or no, that gave me pause. My own cats hated the sight and sound of the vacuum cleaner, so was I about to traumatize poor Clyde? Maybe it would be best to at least know the location of each cat before starting. OK, there were Diego and Willow snoozing in the Florida room and sure enough, there was Xena slumbering in her usual spot on the bed. Now where was Clyde? Where WAS Clyde? Wouldn’t you know, not a sign of him. SIGH! At this point daylight was beginning to wane, so it was now or never to get the vacuuming done and behind me. Continued on page 44

CANINE GOOD CITIZEN A Dog's Test for Everyday Life

any of us who have dogs think of them as our children. Therefore, we want them to behave like obedient children and be good citizens. The American Kennel Club (AKC) must have been thinking along those lines too, since they created the title Canine Good Citizen. On January 1, 2013 this became an official title with AKC, though the program has been around since 1989. Dogs of all kinds can earn this title, as long as they have the appropriate vaccinations. In order to qualify for this title, you and your dog must complete a ten-part exam. The skills required to pass the test are things that your dog should normally do as a wellmannered dog, consisting of the following: 1) Accepting a friendly stranger - A desirable skill for everyday walks and living. 2) Sitting politely for petting - Another appropriate skill for everyday living and walks around the block. 3) Appearance and grooming - Includes brushing over your dog’s back, picking up his paws and looking in his ears, such as a vet or groomer would do. 4) Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead) - This step consists of walking your dog, adding a couple of stops and turns along the way. 5) Walking through a crowd - A helpful skill to know when walking your dog at the park or strolling through a pet store where there are several people grouped together. 6) Sit and down on command, staying in place - Your dog must be able to sit and down on command, stay until you walk out 20 feet, then wait for you to return and

release him from command. 7) Coming when called - Your dog must stay while you walk 10 feet out, then come when you call him over. 8) Reaction to another dog Your dog must be able to stop beside another dog while you shake hands with the dog’s owner, then continue on with your dog. 9) Reaction to distraction - Someone will drop something, roll an item by your dog, and maybe jog past your dog. He should not be upset by these things, but should be confident with you there by his side. 10) Supervised separation - Your dog will be held by someone while you go out of sight for three minutes. This skill could be beneficial if you are out with a friend and need to run to your car for something you may have forgotten. As you can see, most of the test items are useful for situations you and your dog may face in everyday life. Earning the CGC is a fun way to work with your dog in many different situations. Along with completing the exam, the handler must agree to an AKC CGC responsible dog owner’s pledge which are also everyday things that we would do as a dog owner: 1) I will be responsible for my dog’s health needs. Health needs consists of food, veterinarian visits, and daily exercise. 2) I will be responsible for my dog’s safety. Your dog’s safety consists of using a leash in public, supervision of your dog, and having an ID tag for your dog. 3) I will not allow my dog to infringe on the

rights of others. Infringing on the rights of others would be to not pick up your dog’s waste, allow your dog to roam the neighborhood, and allowing your dog to continuously bark. 4) I will be responsible for my dog’s quality of life. This pledge includes basic training, playtime, and attention for life. Once your dog has successfully completed the exam you will receive a form to send to the AKC, along with the appropriate fee, in order to obtain your certificate. For an additional fee, you may choose to have your CGC title recorded by the AKC. If your dog does not pass the test and needs additional help with a certain test item, it will be noted on the form, telling you which skills need more practice. Your dog can then retake the exam after practicing the indicated skill. For further information go to the AKC website at www.akc.org.

Keesha came to us from a setting where there had been a recent loss, though her neglect had obviously been going on for some time. Since Clyde wasn’t in the studio that seemed to be the best place to start and with a push of a button the metal monster roared into life, the rotary brush on the carpet head adding to the cacophony. “OK!” I thought, “So far so good.” About a third of the room was done when my head turned to the right . . .and I nearly jumped out of my skin! It’s a wonder I didn’t scream! To my shock there was Clyde sitting under one of the drawing tables and peeking around a portfolio case, eyes wide as saucers, but totally focused on this loud and bizarre contraption. I froze in place, fearful of making any further movements. But Clyde just sat there staring and finally I dared to continue. To my relief, he just kept on observing and stayed put, even when he saw me exit the room. In fact, he stayed in the studio until all the vacuuming was done. My cats? True to form they all hid the moment the metal monster made its first sound. So much for being concerned about the delicate sensibili-

ties of my feline houseguest. . .and my perfect excuse for procrastinating with vacuuming! As luck would have it, two days after the new profile I wrote for Clyde was posted on the Internet an inquiry arrived. TCR asked me to handle communicating with this prospective adopter and after the exchange of several emails an application arrived. The woman is a freelance film editor in NY and an experienced cat caregiver, sharing her life with a husband, an older female Snowshoe and a young Australian shepherd. She even makes most of her cat’s food and they don’t hesitate to provide whatever medical care they’re animal companions need. The vet reference was excellent and the personal references were outstanding. A rescue volunteer in that area conducted the home visit for TCR and the report was glowing. Transport was eventually arranged and Clyde has gone from homeless and nearly being put down to now living the high life on Long Island. I love happy endings!

was surrendered to our hospital in July in rough shape. Her previous owner refused to provide medical care for her and wanted us to euthanize her. They had watched her deteriorate in their back yard for over a year because she was leaking urine. We diagnosed her with arthritis, a chronic urinary tract infection and severe periodontal disease that had become a kidney infection and ultimately caused a heart infection. Doctors at Adams Farm Animal Hospital donated $1500 worth of care and Bingo Pet Hospice paid for an additional $500 in care with a generous grant. Scarlett is feeling MUCH better now! She requires medication, but takes them well in her senior canned food. She’s great with cats, other dogs, kids and is playful and loving, looking for a forever home.
