Abstract. Deciduous Nothofagus alpina (Poepp. et Endl.) Oerst. trees domínate the montane forests berween 200 and 1300 m a.s.l. in southern Chile (35 °- 41 °15' S). In this srudy the composition, strucrure, and syntaxonomy of Nothofagus alpina-dominated forcsts wcre investigated along their altirudinal gradient at 38 o S in the Malleco Province, Andean Range of Chile. Additionally, a first characteriz, ation and comparison is given of the forests evaluated ecologically fro m microclimate and soils (which are mostly derived from late and postglacial volcanic ash deposits). Three associations are differentiated: First, the Dasyphyllo-Not hofaget u m alpinae ass. nov. Frank et Finckh which occurs at lower elevations. It is differentiated as an association of the N oth ofago Eucryphion Oberd. 1960 alliance by the presence of Gevuina avellana, H ydrangea serratifolia, Lapageria rosea, and Aextoxicon punctatum. Sccond, thc No thofagetum procerac Oberd. ex Ra.núrez 1978 which occurs at middle elevations.lt lacks rhe charactcristic specics of thc previous alliance and is dominated by Laurelia philippiana and Nothofagus alpina. Finally, rhe forests on upper elevations are classified as Nothofagetum dombeyi-alpinae Esk. 1999. These forests lack evergreen broad-leaved trees and comain only Nothofagus alpina and N. dombeyi as dominant trees. The shrub and herb layer of the Nothofagetum dombeyi-al pinae is differentiated from the other associations by the presence of Maytenus magellanica, Myrceugenia chrysocarpa, Berberís trigona, and Polystichum plicatum. Generally, tempcrature and humidity are the main ecological facrors derermining the distribution of the associations. It is concluded thar rhe Nothofagus alpina-dominated forests bclong ro rhe Winrero-Nothofagerea Oberd. 1960 em. class. This classification proposes rhc addition of Laure lietalia p hilippian ae Oberd. 1960, Berberido trigonae- Notbofagetalia dombeyi ord. nov., and W intero - Nothofagetalia ord. nov. Roig, Dollenz ct Méndez orders to the Wintero-Nothofagetca class. Keywords: phy tosociology, Nothofagus alpina forcst, Malleco Province, synecology, volcanic ash soils, Andean Rangc.
