A LittleHistory of theLafourcheParish PublicLibrary The Lafourche Parish Public Library, created through Parish Ordinance # 667 on Dec. 11, 1935, was the 25th library demonstration project of Louisiana State Library. Under the Library Demonstration Program, the State Library established parish libraries supported initially by state funding. These became locally supported following the demonstration period. In Lafourche, the parish residents approved a 2-mill tax to fund the library. During the first two years, the library opened eight branches and began bookmobile operations. In 1957 the Lafourche Parish Public Library system earned the Louisiana Library Association?s Modisette Award as the outstanding parish library in the state. In the 1960?s the Library acquired its Headquarters building, located in the old post office building in Thibodaux. It experienced its largest ever circulation, serving the public as well as schools,

which had no libraries at that time. The first in a series of successful National Library Week Programs were conducted. The 1970?s saw a boom in economy and a growing population in Lafourche Parish. Despite this, Library services grew slowly. Bookmobile operations ceased following a period of increased costs, reflecting a trend seen elsewhere in the state. This decade saw the merger of the Carver Branch with the Thibodaux Main Branch. In early 1980?s Larose and Lockport Branches moved into new multi-purpose facilities financed with state and federal money. In 1985 the Larose and Cut Off Branches were consolidated. A building drive for a new Thibodaux Branch was spearheaded by its Friends group resulting in the Martha Sowell Utley Memorial Library, located in the National Park Service?s Acadian

Wetlands Center. In 1987 a small millage increase was acquired for operations and a Bookmobile was purchased in 1992. The current period may prove the most challenging in the Library?s history. New technology in electronics, video, communications and automation carries great potential for the Library. Changes in the lifestyle and character of the population require adjustments by the Library. Decisions about book and non-book needs, equipment requirements, and program objectives must be made in order to meet the needs of the new century. Although the past 80 years have been interesting and challenging, the future will be even more so as the Lafourche Parish Public Library strives for a bright and promising future.

She is Not Invisible Kathy, Cataloging Librarian

by Marcus Sedgwick

Sixteen-year-old Laureth Peak is embarking on a trip from England to America with her seven-year-old brother, Benjamin, and his stuffed, scruffy black raven, Stan. They are going to New York to meet Michael Walker, who has found their dad?s Black Book, a notebook filled with ideas for novels, and hopefully find their missing dad. Things aren?t always as they seem, however. Laureth is capable, responsible and perfectly able to travel with her brother safely, but she is blind and needs Benjamin to be her eyes on the trip. No one discovers this fact until brother and sister are on the plane. Sam, who?s seated next to them, strikes up a conversation and asks about her phone, which talks to her as she enters information.

Once in New York, Laureth and Benjamin retrieve their dad?s book and follow the clues to try to trace his steps before going missing. Will they be able to navigate New York and find him? When will their mother discover that they have left London? What has happened to their dad? What is the importance of the number 354? This fast-paced adventure is packed with subtle clues and digressions. Time moves forward then slips back to give context. Chapters alternate between the story line and pages from Jack Peak?s Black Book. This story grabs the reader?s attention right from the beginning and holds it to the surprising end.

by Linda Tirado It?s possible that Linda Tirado never expected to write a book about her story. But after her response to the question ?Why do poor people do things that seem so self-destructive?? on an online forum went viral, that story is now available to shed light on the lives of many low-wage workers. Somewhat along the lines of Barbara Ehrenreich?s Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, Tirado describes ?the pressures of being poor? in Hand to Mouth: Living in Bootstrap America. That?s poor ? not lazy, or living with a sense of entitlement. Tirado and others she describes often work

multiple, physically demanding jobs during a long week for little pay and no benefits. She describes the physical and emotional toll of a life of poverty, of trying to better oneself and one?s family, of the difficulty in trying to access medical care with no benefits, of working through the pain, and so much more that some people who have never been really poor likely have never given much thought. In Hand to Mouth, Tirado also expands on her explanations of why poor people at times engage in behavior that, to others, appears self-destructive, and unapologetically 6

so. When Tirado?s book was released in late 2014, it sparked a debate between those who believed Tirado?s story and those who refused to do so. Give it a read and decide for yourself. A recent addition to the Lafourche Parish Public Library collection, Hand to Mouth: Living in Bootstrap America is available (and can be requested) from the Thibodaux Branch.

Looking for something new to read? Try our New Adult fiction. The Lafourche Parish Library is always striving to be on the cutting edge of new technologies, media, and new genres in book writing. (?genre-a particular style used in movies, writing, or art, which can be recognized by certain features,? Macmillan Dictionary online). One of the newest and most popular genres to be introduced is called New Adult. New Adult (NA) fiction features main characters in the 18?30 age range and tends to focus on issues such as leaving home for the first time, developing sexuality and relationships, going to

college, and career choices. While romance and relationships are the main focus in New Adult fiction, sub-genres commonly seen in young adult and adult fiction such as Science fiction, urban fiction, horror, paranormal, mystery, etc., can also be found. New Adult fiction is growing in popularity particularly through books by bestselling authors like Jennifer L. Armentrout, E.L. James, Colleen Hoover, and Jamie McGuire. Titles like Fifty Shades of Grey, Beautiful Disaster, Losing It, and Slammed are all examples of 15

New Adult fiction. (Warning-intense sexuality is a hallmark of many New Adult books.) Visit the New Adult section at any of LPPL?s nine branches for a new reading experience. If you don?t see an author or title you like, talk to any staff member to make a request or search Novelist Plus on the library website to find read-a-likes or books by your favorite authors.
