In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is commonly, but not universally, traced to a sparsely documented 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts. The 1621 Plymouth feast and thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest. Pilgrims and Puritans who began emigrating from England in the 1620s and 1630s carried the tradition of Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving with them to New England. Several days of Thanksgiving were held in early New England history that have been identified as the "First Thanksgiving",

The Good Girl By Mary Kubica

Brooke, Reference Librarian

A new author is on the rise and her debut novel, The Good Girl (2014), is nothing short of compelling. Mary Kubica will quickly become a go-to author for any fan of suspenseful, engaging plots, and simple, yet beautifully constructed, true-to-life writing. Kubica has a way of pulling readers in and exposing them to everything that makes us human. Her first book, The Good Girl, will stick with readers long after they have turned the final page. The Good Girl often draws comparisons to Gillian Flynn?s Gone Girl, and while fans of Gone Girl will surely enjoy The Good Girl?s plot line ? the aggrieved daughter of a wealthy family is kidnapped for ransom by a mysterious man she meets in a bar ? the two books couldn't more different in style and tone. Where Gone Girl is all about the rapid, head-spinning twists and turns, The Good Girl unfolds slowly, allowing the reader to get into the minds of the characters as the intricacies of the plot reveal themselves throughout the pages. The Good Girl is a quiet psychological suspense novel, focusing on who the characters are at their core and why they do the things that they do. Any reader interested in exploring the complex issues of the

human condition will thoroughly enjoy the trip that Kubica takes us on as we delve deeper and deeper into the psyche of her distinct and memorable characters. Mia Dennett is the black sheep of her prominent Chicago family. Her father, the influential judge, her older sister, the successful lawyer, and her mother, the demure trophy wife ? Mia, the inner city art teacher, has never quite gained acceptance from her family for her life choices and the woman she has become. Nor has she secured the love and devotion of her too-often-busy boyfriend. After being stood up by her boyfriend yet again, Mia meets a charming man who may just be the answer to everything that is lacking in her life. Little does she know, as she runs out of the bar with him into the night, that she is escaping life with a man who has been hired to kidnap her. What follows is unexpected, as her kidnapper, Colin Thatcher, just doesn?t have the heart or the will to go through with the ?snatch- and- deliver? plan, and instead skirts Mia away to an isolated cabin in a desolate area of Minnesota. What goes on within those four walls is for the reader to discover as the relationship between Mia and Colin grows 6

increasingly complex. Told through multiple viewpoints and transitions from the past and present, The Good Girl is a visceral journey into the lives and minds of the people connected to a missing girl. Readers will hear from the detective, Gabe, the mother, Eve, and the kidnapper, Colin, as they take us on a psychological tailspin of a ride through the events of Mia?s disappearance. What is revealed is sure to provoke the minds and hearts of readers, as they discover that nothing is ever as simple as it seems. The Good Girl is available at Lafourche Parish Library?s Lockport, Raceland, South Lafourche, and Thibodaux branches, and as always, if you don?t live nearby, it can be transferred to a branch near you for your reading enjoyment! Also, readers who love The Good Girl, will be pleased to know that Kubica has recently released a new novel, Pretty Baby, about a couple who takes in a teenage girl with baby in tow and whose past is soon to be revealed as questionable to say the least.

As the harvest moon shines down, the wind picks up, sending orange, yellow, and crimson leaves dancing, until they settle in a pumpkin patch. One-by-one, leaf people emerge to celebrate the autumnal equinox. The combination of fantasy and realism in the crisp autumn night will spark children?s imagination about the leaf piles they find in their city, suburb, or country roads. List ening The first step to collecting family stories is to become a good listener. Good listeners encourage great storytelling. When a speaker feels that the listener is interested, he or she is more inspired to communicate generously. A good listener gives full attention to the teller, does not interrupt or contradict the facts of a story as it is being told, and offers the teller encouragement with an interested facial expression and body stance. When a teller feels encouraged by an interested listener, there is joy in the telling. Int erviewing El ders An effective way to hear family stories is to ask questions. Family stories can be collected by interviewing a family elder. Make a mental or written list of topics that might generate some questions to ask the elder. Quest ions about : People, places, events, objects, important transitions, work, or travel can be story starters. Although short-term memory may sometimes be limited in the oldest of relatives, long-term memory may be very much intact. We need to help the teller journey back in time to retrieve these treasures.

Staff Profile Lut icia Branch Manager Choctaw Branch

The Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe by Edgar Allan Poe

If you frequent the Choctaw Branch, you know Luticia. She?s the branch manager there, a position she took over in 2007, but Luticia?s service to the library began long before that, in 1996. She began work as a library page at the Thibodaux Branch and then became a full-time staff member in 1999 as a branch assistant.

Katie's Pick

Poe perfected the psychological thriller, invented the detective story, and rarely missed transporting the reader to his own supernatural realm. He has also been hailed posthumously as one of the finest literary critics of the nineteenth century. In Edgar Allan Poe: Complete Tales and Poems fans may indulge in all of Poe's most imaginative short-stories, including The Fall of the House of Usher, The Murders in Rue Morgue, The Tell-Tale Heart, Ligeia and Ms. In a Bottle. His complete early and miscellaneous poetic masterpieces are here also, including The Raven.

In total, she?s worked for the Lafourche Parish Public Library for 19 years. This year, Luticia and her husband Scott are celebrating their fourteenth wedding anniversary. The couple have one son Brandon, who is currently a fifth grader at the same elementary school that both Luticia and Scott attended. They also have a spoiled 16-year old cat named Lily. On the weekends, Luticia loves spending time with her family trying new restaurants, going to the movies, and spending time at their camp in Lake Boeuf. She also enjoys her time as a 4-H mom and is excited about becoming a band mom this year.

People I Want to Punch in the Throat by Jen Mann

Jessica's Pick

Jen Mann brings her sharp wit to bear on suburban life, marriage, and motherhood in this laugh-out-loud collection of essays. From the politics of joining a play group, to the thrill of mothers?night out at the gun range, to the rewards of your most meaningful relationship (the one you have with your cleaning lady), nothing is sacred or off-limits. So the next time you find yourself wearing fuzzy bunny pajamas in the school carpool line or accidentally stuck at a co-worker?s swingers party, just think, What would Jen Mann do?

Luticia loves her community and says that one of her favorite things about working at the library is being able to work in the community that she was born and raised in. Her favorite book is Still Alice by Lisa Genova and her favorite book series is Kate Collins?Flower Mystery series.

Black-Eyed Susans by Julia Heaberlin

She enjoys cozy mysteries and reading Jeff Kinney?s Diary of a Wimpy Kid series with her son.

Lori's Pick

Shocking, intense, and utterly original, Black-Eyed Susans is a dazzling psychological thriller, seamlessly weaving past and present in a searing tale of a young woman whose harrowing memories remain in a field of flowers? as a killer makes a chilling return to his garden.

Stop by and say ?hello? to Luticia at the Choctaw Branch.
