?Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. I ndeed, it is the only thing that ever has.? Friends of the Lafourche Parish Public Library raise money that enables our library to move from good to great -providing the resources for additional programming, much needed equipment, support for children?s summer reading, and special events throughout the year. The work of the Friends highlights the on-going basic fact that our library is the cornerstone of the community. They also provide opportunities for all to engage in the joy of life-long learning and connect with the thoughts and ideas of others from ages past to the present. The Friends?gift of their time and commitment to the library sets an example for all in how volunteerism leads to positive civic engagement and the betterment of our community.

Each library branch has a Friends of the Library group that coordinates book sales to help support library programs. You can find these ongoing book sales at your local library, usually in the lobby, with books for as low as .10 cents! Check it out and see what you find! If interested in joining a Friends of the Library group for your local library, The key message of this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign, please contact that respective branch.

October 4-10, is to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms. NFPA is excited to share this important information so everyone better understands the life-saving value of home smoke alarms. Look for fire trucks and firemen to visit library branches this month! See pages 7-9 for Fire Prevention Week events. See page 13 for Friends of the Library events. 5

Bo o k Re v i e w s Rat Queens By Anthony Doerr Catherine, Librarian Sometimes you want to read something that makes you think, a book that will make you question the nature of reality or society or yourself. I can list a number of works, both created as prose and as comic books that have engaged me on that level. Rat Queens is not one of those comics, but it sure is a whole lot of fun while it gleefully plays with the conventions of its genre in its first volume, Sass and Sorcery, written by Kurtis J. Wiebe and drawn by Roc Upchurch. The setting of Rat Queens will be familiar to fans of pulp fantasy or the multitude of games that have drawn inspiration from that genre and have been released onto game consoles, computers, and Dungeons & Dragons style rulebooks for tabletop play. The coastal town of Palisade has recently become home to several colorfully-named adventuring parties, and the longtime residents are starting to get tired of them roughing up the place. Now that the local monster

population has been cut down to size, the adventurers have turned their energy to partying and fighting each other. One of these groups is the Rat Queens. Violet is a hipster dwarf and the party?s go-to women when the problem needs a sword stuck in it. Hannah is an elf mage who is not terribly fond of her necromancer parents and has an on-again-off-again relationship with the Captain of the Guard. Dee is a human raised in the cult of a Lovecraft-style Elder God, and she still manages to cast divine spells despite currently claiming to be an atheist. Finally, the group is rounded out by Betty, whose role as the party?s break-in specialist is aided by the small size that comes with being a smidgen, one of those fantasy races that have cropped up since the Tolkien estate sues anyone who writes about something too precisely like a hobbit. She is, of course, a hedonist, frequently crossing the line into irresponsibility. If you think this all sounds strange, gory,

Tomboy : A Graphic Memoir by Liz Prince

I don?tread a lot of graphic novels, but I like them, quirky ones especially. Liz Prince?s graphic memoir Tomboy isn?t especially quirky, but as memoirs go, it?s brutally honest as Prince talks about her life as a tomboy, how comfortable it felt to her, and how out of place she was among her peers growing up as a result. The gender norms pervasive in society fit her about as well as the dresses she was sometimes forced to wear ? that is, they didn?t fit her at all. Liz?s very existence seems to have challenged the gender norms and assumptions of many of her classmates. Not surprisingly, she was bullied and ostracized at school. ?Girls shunned me because I acted like a boy? Boys shunned

and more than a little lewd, you are on the right track. Though you should probably double the amount of blood you?re imagining and multiply the amount of frank discussion of sex by about ten. Everyone keeps their clothes on while on-panel; however, I am not sure how much that means at this point. All this is to say that Rat Queens is certainly not for everyone. If you are not familiar with the conventions of the genre, there is very little exposition to help you orient yourself. Also, if you are easily offended by things like a tiny woman discussing her love of both drug-like mushrooms and her girlfriend, you should probably do your blood pressure a favor and stay away. However, if you enjoy old-fashioned pulp fantasy action but always wanted to see more maidens getting in on the frequently violent and drunken fun, you would have a hard time finding something that fits the bill better than Rat Queens.

Katina, Area Librarian

me for being a girl regardless of whether or not I acted like one,? she writes. She didn't act like a girl in many ways, except for an important one. She liked boys, who rarely liked her in return because of her tomboy status and who questioned her sexuality, one of the things about which Prince was absolutely certain. In Tomboy, Liz Prince allows us to follow her through an awkward childhood and adolescence spanning different states and schools as she tries to fit in, thinking that she doesn?t really fit in. It isn?t until the memoir?s end, appropriately enough, that Liz finds a community of her own, one that embraces her and encourages her to be herself and go after what she hopes to become. 6

Tomboy is a good read told through deceptively simple-looking drawings that might make one think, ?I can draw that? until you realize, ?Oh, wait, no, I actually can?t draw.? Or that might just be me. If you appreciate graphic novels or memoirs and have a soft spot for the ?outsider,? you might give this one a go. Al so by Liz Prince

In si g h t s Domest ic Viol ence Awareness Week Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the "Day of Unity" held in October 1981. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became an entire week devoted to a range of activities conducted at the local, state, and national level. The activities conducted were as varied and diverse as the program sponsors but had common themes: - Mourning those who have died because of domestic violence - Celebrating those who have survived - Connecting those who work to end violence Red Ribbon Week In 1988, the National Family Partnership sponsored the first National Red Ribbon Celebration. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. Since that time, the campaign has reached millions of U.S. children and families. The National Family Partnership (NFP) and its network of individuals and organizations continue to deliver this message of hope to millions of people every year, through the National Red Ribbon Campaign. Teen Read Week Teen Read Week is an initiative created by the Young Adult Library Services Association to spotlight all the great resources and activities available to help teens build literacy skills while reading for the fun of it. An annual celebration, this year?s theme encourages libraries to help teens escape from the day to day grind of school, homework, family responsibilities, part time jobs and so on by picking up something to read. Your library has a variety of resources in your collection? fantasy novels, sci-fi, beach reads, travel books, tales of adventure and escape, and more!

Geraldine (Geri) Branch Assistant

Kathy's Pick

Circus Mirandus by Cassie Beasley

Geraldine ? ?Geri? ? has been with the Lafourche Parish Public Library since April 2005. She has a long and varied work history, coming to the library after teaching beauty school for 25 years. When her dad become ill, Geri retired from that job to care for him. Not one to sit still, she found her way to the library as a Title V worker -- a program to help older workers enter the workforce. She began at the Golden Meadow Branch. These days, Geri is a part-time worker at the Bayou Blue and South Lafourche branches. The job, she says, is one she'd wish she'd considered earlier. ?After working for the library for a little while, I realized that I would have chosen this as a profession earlier in life had I known about all of the things that the library has to offer,? said Geri. ?I really enjoy meeting and visiting with all of the library patrons.? Geri also designs and leads arts and crafts programs for library customers. These range from painting programs for teens and adults during the summer to craft programs for adults throughout the year. It?s work that Geri enjoys. On a personal level, she's a proud mother of three, grandmother of five, and great-grandmother of seven. She's an animal lover and has two ?senior? cats. Some other things she enjoys are road trips and water color, acrylic, and oil painting for relaxation, as well as listening to audio books when she?s on the road. ?I consider myself a movie buff and have begun to collect movie classics on DVD such as Citizen Kane and Little Women,? she added.

Micah learns that what he thought were just stories his grandfather told about the magical Circus Mirandus actually happened. The circus is real! Can he find the Circus and collect the promised miracle to save his grandfather?

During the month of Oct ober, take time to discover your f amil y.Here are a few ideas to consider for making the most of this Family History Month. - Interview older family members and record your f amil y hist ory f or f ut ure generat ions. As they tell family stories, record them on audio, video, or in a journal. Brainstorm a list of questions drawing on relatives?memories and experiences. Interview different generations and use the answers to create a trivia game. - Excavate Grandpa?s attic and discover t reasures f rom t he past . Let the younger generation experience what parents and grandparents were like at their age. - Preserve f amil y memories by collecting favored recipes and stories from family members. Compile them into a family cookbook. - Get started tracing your family tree. Bring along birth, marriage, and death certificates and visit any library branch. Use your library card to log on to Ancestry.com and begin your search. - Visit library branches at Thibodaux, Lockport, and South Lafourche to explore our extensive print collection of genealogy resources. - At t end a geneal ogy workshop at the Lockport Branch Library on Wednesday, October 14 at 10:30am to learn basic research tools for tracing your family history. - Choose f rom t he many f ree onl ine services to start a family website. Use it to share photos, funny stories, and research on your family tree. Let your site serve as a digital meeting place for other family members interested in recording your history or reading about it. During the month of October, celebrate your family heritage, reconnect with your roots and share what you have learned with the ones you love. Available at all branches. 15
