A little bit about me... Currently in my 2nd year at Nottingham Trent University and thoroughly enjoying studying BA Product Design I consider myself a forward thinking undergraduate driven by a genuine enthusiasm and interest in design that stems far past the degree itself.
An avid sportsman, from this an appreciation of form as well as function for the equipment and gear I have used, from sprinting spikes to climbing harnesses, hockey sticks to inline hockey skates.
Growing up in the New forest, my elegant and organic designs have a clear influence of the nature I was surrounded by as well as the underlying sustainability concern that backs all of my work

For Co-oproduct
...a revolution in the making
Making redundant materials desirable A project brief set by Co-oproduct – “an online portal for the free-sharing of product design ideas focusing on Creative ReUse.”, the challenge was to use redundant materials in such a way as to make them desirable again.
James Salisbury
Change the way consumers look at waste Through collection of daily waste and experimentation with these items lead to the production of a woven lattice from threaded PET bottles. With the desire to experiment with furniture, I looked to produce a desirable aesthetic style easy to apply to other broken furniture and wooden products

Next market dominating headphones Challenged my MediaDevil – company concentrating on technological accessories – to design headphones “to compete with Dr. Dre Beats” and be the next dominating product on that market
James Salisbury
Innovative market approach Thorough research into the market and specifically how Beats have managed to dominate resulted in the need for a huge marketing campaign or an innovative approach to the market. This would be achieved through targeting a specific segment of users, popular enough to drive the “I want to be like these kinds of people and thus buy products they buy.
User PRofile Although easily appealing to the outdoor sports market and beyond, originally focus was upon the world of climbing, plotting that of an individual as well as a larger climbing focus group too.

Immersive lifestyle research Targetting the outdoor extreme sports that most people aspire to, DemonSounds were designed with the functionality to work in those environments, its features taken from focus groups, interviews, surveys and extended market research into other products they use none specific to headphones, such as climbing shoes, all the while keeping in mind the average user also.

8 What a bunch of
Next generation bag Working in conjunction with Nestle York and their design department, the brief was to design the next generation of Rowntree Randoms packaging, promoting sharing and incorporating their “fun branding
James Salisbury
Distinguishing the brand Indepth workshops and approaches lead to detailed insights into user involvement of packaging, and the holistic experience it needs to take account for. Through this I ideated that it was distinguishing the brand from the shelf that was the issue as current bags and their on-shelf appearance made brand identification hard.
incorporating brand identity With these insights, What a bunch of randoms keeps the packaging itself simple and helps in the sharing as well as reinforcing the brand through not only its P.O.S, but its incorporation of both the Rowntree’s and Randoms brands.

Exploration of Form With the intended use of the 3D printer for a prototype during this project, I aimed to make the most of this with respect to potential form that would be hard to achieve by hand
Exploring personal preferences This exercise really gave me the opportunity to experiment and explore my preferences in design at this point in my life, looking into ceramics and popular low-poly graphics as well as the obvious influence by nature.

FlatVac Sustainability concern Asked to design a household appliance that focuses on the modern concern of sustainability. For this I chose to concentrate on the “value” range of hand-held vacuum cleaners – the most likely product to be thrown without thought.

James Salisbury
Disassembly Focus Concentrating on the disassembly enabling the users to separate out materials for disposal but also the idea of repair/replacing components rather than the whole product. From there material choice was determined by what was easily recyclable within the existing infrastructure.

Altering user behaviour FlatVac is a user assembled vacuum made from the cardboard it was packaged in. This breaks down the unknown of what makes an appliance work and in turn demonstrates the opportunity for home repair or disassembly for its end of life.
