WELCOME TO CHARLOTTE BALLET’S 2022/2023 SEASON

A message from Charlotte Ballet’s Artistic Director Alejandro Cerrudo.

October 2022 marks my sixth month at Charlotte Ballet as the artistic director. Though the time has flown by, I have been able to experience so much at this organization. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing young dancers grow and refine their skills through Charlotte Ballet Academy’s programs like Summer Intensive and our professionally led classes. I’ve met the dedicated staff working behind the scenes to ensure our programs and events happen seamlessly. And I’ve cherished the experiences of Charlotte’s vibrant community, seeing the excitement around so many arts festivals and initiatives. But the thing I have been excited for the most is getting to see you again, our Charlotte Ballet family.

Thank you for joining us for our 2022/2023 Season opener, Fall Works. I cannot wait for you all to experience the emotions brought on by Crystal Pite's A Picture of You Falling and the intensity behind the movement of Helen Pickett's IN Cognito. No matter how these works unfold for you, I know you’ll leave humming the tunes of Sugar + the Hi-Lows’ renditions of Johnny Cash's greatest hits in the Charlotte premiere of Charlotte Ballet II Director Christopher Stuart’s Under the Lights. May the music and movements of tonight create new memories with your friends and family that you can cherish for years to come.

Our performances are strengthened by audience members like you. I am grateful you are here today and look forward to sharing more performances with you.

Until next time,

Charlotte Ballet dedicates these performances to Marie Mitchell. An avid supporter of the arts, Marie has been in attendance at every production and event for the past thirty years. In a spirit of generosity, curiosity and creativity over the years, Marie has enabled Charlotte Ballet to present more than 14 new works or internationally acclaimed master works. She had a love for the art form and for our artists, and Marie has been instrumental in shaping what Charlotte Ballet is today. She will be missed greatly.

PROGRAM NOTES

Raven

IN Cognito was commissioned for Charlotte Ballet by Lise and Travis Hain.

“…To perform without a net is ecstasy." "… To perform without focus is fatal.” - Tom Robbins, Villa Incognito

"The extraordinary writer Tom Robbins, a native of Blowing Rock, NC, and I have shared a pen pal relationship since 2014. Because the breadth of his writing and his indomitable spirit have greatly influenced my life, in general, I wrote him to ask if I could call my new ballet IN Cognito, a title inspired by his novel, Villa Incognito. He said yes. It is not the actual theme of that particular book that helped to inspire my ballet, but the recurring leitmotif of being incognito within all of his books.

As performers, we transform ourselves, assume identities, and at the same time, quite liberatingly, we show our very souls. We accept this equivocality as our reality, and this acceptance has always intrigued me. Are we hiding in plain sight? Are we searching for the place to strip ourselves of artifice so we may celebrate, and not hide at all? Do we flourish and even delight in the ambiguity of our artistic lives because of our resolute focus? These questions, and perhaps the answers, weave throughout IN Cognito. “Transformation, liberation and celebration are the themes in all of my novels.” Tom Robbins

The 60’s and 70’s costuming and décor serve to create a space to be incognito IN Cognito. I find the bright colors of these decades quite celebratory, almost performative. The set/ furniture both delineates and continually transforms the space. The unified idea of the costumes, by the brilliant Charles Heightchew, forms a central identity, and at the same time reveals undeniable individuality. The light design, by the incomparable Les Dickert, shapes the mood and the interstices of the room.

The driving nature of the music by late Oscar nominated Jóhan Jóhannsson and Mikael Karlsson, which is at times whimsical, passionate, methodical or ominous, inspires and informs the nature of the choreography.

This ballet is dedicated to Tom Robbins. Thank you, Switters." - Choreographer, Helen Pickett

Christopher Stuart, Director of Charlotte Ballet II

Christopher Stuart, originally from Sandy Hook, Connecticut, graduated in 2002 from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Following graduation, he joined Nashville Ballet, where he was featured in works by renowned choreographers. In 2018, after 16 years as a principal dancer, he was named Resident Choreographer of Nashville Ballet.

Stuart’s vast experience as a dancer and performer helped him articulate his choreographic voice through improvisation and exploration of different forms of movement. He has created works for Nashville Ballet, Ballet Arkansas, Chattanooga Ballet, National Choreographic Initiative, and, of course, Charlotte Ballet. Among his works: Under the Lights, a full-length work set to the music of Johnny Cash, which he created in 2014. And ArtsNash had this to say: “Stuart’s choreography proved to be a seamless blend of classical, modern and popular dance styles.”

Stuart first worked with Charlotte Ballet in early 2020 when he choreographed a piece for its Innovative Works repertoire show, which drew inspiration from the Mint Museum’s installation of Immersed in Light by studio DRIFT. Following the success of that collaboration, Hope Muir hired Stuart – then Resident Choreographer of Nashville Ballet – to be Program Director of Charlotte Ballet II, the Ballet’s second company, and Rehearsal Director for the main company. In summer of 2021, Charlotte Ballet appointed Stuart as interim artistic director, which he served until May of 2022 before being promoted to Director, Charlotte Ballet II.
