Social Media websites can be a fun way to connect with people and build your fan base. However, there are things that you should consider before posting:

SOCIAL MEDIA DO’S AND DON’TS

ALWAYS THINK BEFORE YOU TWEET (WWYMT – WHAT WOULD YOUR MOTHER THINK?) Remember that once you’ve posted something on the Internet, it can’t be taken back. Ask yourself, “Would I say/show this to my parents? My coaches? My teachers?” If the answer is “no,” don’t post it.

JOIN IN CONVERSATIONS BUT BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS (IT’S ABOUT RESPECT) To avoid getting into fights or confrontations with others online, remember that people are entitled to their opinions, just as you are to yours. If you don’t agree with someone, it’s okay to say so—but if the conversation becomes disrespectful or hurtful to anyone, let it go and move on.

GO A STEP FURTHER AND KEEP IT POSITIVE (NOTHING IS PRIVATE) Just because your account may be set to private doesn’t mean that the things you post on it will stay that way. Recruiters, coaches and potential employers will sometimes view you and your friends’ posts to determine whether you are right for their teams or organizations. You don’t want to cost yourself a potential scholarship or job, so make sure your posts reveal only your best characteristics.

STAY HUMBLE AND MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFE BALANCE (KEEP IT REAL) It can be very exciting when people want to follow you online because of your talents. But remember, the quickest way to build a real fan base is by being gracious and down-to-earth. After all, it’s hard to look up to someone who is self-centered and arrogant. And remember, there is a world outside of your computer. Your online activities should enhance your life offline, not replace it.

ATHLETIC INTEGRITY

JUGGLE LIFE’S CHALLENGES Life’s challenges are there to help you discover who you are as a person. See challenges as opportunities to learn and help move you closer to your goals. Embrace them when they come, develop a plan for tackling each one, have faith and the courage to do what’s necessary and celebrate when you have made it through to the other side.

GO UNTIL YOUR LAST BREATH Being an athlete is hard—if it wasn’t, everyone would do it. It’s the hard work and perseverance you, your teammates, and your coaches put into the sport that makes winning feel so great. How would you feel if your high school team beat the worst team in your division 3-0? Not so great because even though it’s a win, you should have won by a lot more (everyone knows that team is terrible!). Now imagine winning the Homecoming game against your rivals 3-0 in overtime. Even though the score is the same, you will feel a lot better about that win because you had to fight for it and even when the game should have been over, you had to keep fighting. Remember that the next time you want to slack off—it’s the hard work that makes it all worth it, so NEVER. GIVE. UP.

STAY THE COURSE EVEN WHEN OTHER’S QUIT

ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST Having talent is not enough to be successful--you must apply yourself. Natural skill and athleticism will only get you so far. The most successful athletes constantly work on improving their bodies, minds and approaches to the game so they can beat their opponents on every level. Remember, you can’t be the best if you are not, first, being your best.

If you have a goal, it has to be your own. You may grow up playing alongside your best friends with a shared dream of playing in college. One of those friends might quit before high school to focus on something else. Another might get cut from the varsity team junior year. Both friends might encourage you to quit so you can spend more time with them. Don’t do it! You are not letting anyone down by pursuing your dreams. Your future does not belong to your friends, teachers, coaches, or even your family—it is yours and you must find what you love, commit to it, and never let others sway you from that path.

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

to ask yourself if these are truly your friends. Just remember, true friends respect you for whom you are and will support your success—if they’re pressuring you to change, they never supported you in the first place.

JORDANS, JEWELRY AND CARS AREN’T THE FINER THINGS It is hard not to equate material wealth with success (just look at Carmelo’s Instagram, he does it all the time). What you don’t see on Twitter and Instagram is the massive amount of time, hard work and sacrifice that goes into earning those material possessions. In order to earn material wealth the right way you must have a strong work ethic and moral compass. A truly successful man’s most valued possessions are his integrity, dignity, confidence and pride. You cannot have one without the other and you cannot have much of anything without all four. Remember that next time ‘Melo’ posts a picture of a Rolex.

GRASP THE GAME OF LIFE THROUGH PATIENCE AND PERSEVERANCE

ALWAYS WATCH THE COMPANY YOU KEEP Ever heard the saying, “You are the company you keep?” When you ask yourself, “What are my friends like?” What kind of words pop up? Are they words like: shady, selfish, slacker, lazy, disrespectful, violent, and irresponsible? Probably not because who would describe their friends that way? The tricky thing about picking friends wisely is that you might not always realize that they are a bad influence on you. Everyone has good and bad qualities so it can be difficult to figure out if someone is good or bad for you. Ask yourself this, “What am I like when I’m with my friends?” Are you much different than you are in front of your family, coaches and teachers? Does your personality, language, fashion, and sense of values change drastically? If so, you may need

Life is like a video game. There are times when you lose or have to start over. But just like a video game, the best thing to do is to keep trying. Each level that you play will have different challenges but with practice you will conquer that level and move on. Don’t get frustrated, don’t make excuses – just keep playing. Remember, you may not win right away but with practiced skill and patience you can get through anything.

SELF-RESPECT, LOVE AND DETERMINATION ARE THE KEYS TO SUCCESS Why is it important to love and respect yourself? If you love yourself then you won’t depend on others to make you happy. If you respect yourself, you won’t allow others to put you in situations that can cause you harm. Be smart, love and respect yourself and others will do the same--you need self-determination in order to take control of your destiny, make sound decisions, and accomplish your goals.

JUST BUDGET CORRECTLY AND EVERYTHING ELSE WILL FALL INTO PLACE

FINANCIAL TIPS

If you sign a $1 million contract with Nike, what’s the first thing you would do? Buy a house? A Bugatti? Some bling? WRONG! You create a budget. A budget is the roadmap to help you to determine how much money you will need to live. It is simply a summary of how much money you have coming in minus how much money you have going out each month. If you have more money coming in than going out, then you might just get that Bugatti in a few years.

GOALS ARE IMPORTANT FOR FINANCIAL SUCCESS

ALWAYS LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS It is no secret that professional athletes make a lot of money. What is a pretty well kept secret is that it is never as much money as it seems. Hundreds of athletes have gone broke from living beyond their means. In order to avoid this fate, it is important to understand the difference between a “want” and a “need” (hint: The Jordan Retro 10’s are a “want” but running water is a “need”). It is equally important to be able to tell your friends, family, and most of all yourself “no” when the “wants” begin to outnumber the “needs.”

Financial goals help you to prioritize and focus on what’s most important. While having money is a goal, money can also help you to accomplish other goals such as going to college or getting your first car. It’s important to write your goals down so you can budget accordingly and estimate how much time you will need to achieve each goal. As you write them down, think about which goals are short-term (less than 3 months), mid-term (3 months to 3 years) and long-term (more than 3 years). This will help you to establish a solid financial plan.

SAVE, SAVE, SAVE Once you have created your budget, determined what your needs are and set your financial goals, you will be able to understand how much money you need to put away to achieve other goals. Some goals are immediate and may be wants (i.e., buying tickets to a concert) while others are more long term (saving for school). The important thing is that you take care of the necessities first and then set money aside for the future.
