Google Glass
Glass app promises a brave new naked world of ... humiliation
By Paul Whitefield
W
hat do you get when you combine Google Glass, “selfies” and sex? Yep, a new app called Sex With Glass. Oh, Lord, please don’t let Kim and Kanye get a hold of this one! Now, the L.A. Times is a family newspaper, and a serious newspaper, so (spoiler alert!) there will be absolutely no pictures accompanying this post such as those on the website of the Guardian -which you would think is a serious newspaper, having broken the Edward Snowden/NSA surveillance scandal and all, but I guess still retains its British cheek, shall we say. Anyway, the app: The basic idea is that Sex With Glass will allow a couple, both properly equipped with said devices, to experience sex from a, ahem, different point of view. Sure, it records your amorous encounter. But wait, there’s more! At a swipe, or a voice command, users can switch views, allowing each to see what his/ her his/his her/her other/other partner is seeing. Yes, you read that right. You see what she sees. (That’s just to simplify; it’s too hard to keep typing all the permutations, OK?) Which is, frankly, a more terrifying invasion of privacy than anything the NSA has and/or will ever do. Not to mention that foreplay is likely to devolve into something like this: “You go ahead.” “No, you first.” “No, you first, I insist! “Oh, never mind, let’s just watch a movie.”
And, yes, there could be some other awkward moments: He: I knew it, she’s admiring my abs. She: Hey, wait a minute, he’s watching the game?! But wait, there’s still more. With a properly wired house (can you say Google Nest?), the users can control music and lighting,
or perhaps even browse “The Kama Sutra” for a little, uh, inspiration. Also, the video will be stored in the cloud for a fun-filled post-game critique -though only for five hours. Then, much like the old “Mission: Impossible” gimmick, the video selfdestructs, or deletes, or goes away, or whatever it is stuff in the cloud does. (Rains? Hails? Snows?) And just how did this app come to pass? No, it is not the brainchild of a modern-day Marquis de Sade. As the Guardian wrote: “The project started
off with the question ‘How can we make sex more awesome with Google Glass,’ says Sherif Maktabi, the founder of the project.” Oh, and here I figured it was something more like, “How can I make a lot of money off Google Glass, live in Covent Garden, drive a Ferrari and vacation in the south of France, all before I’m 30?” Or perhaps this: “How can I make sex as embarrassing and/or humiliating as trying on a swimsuit in a store or going to the gym when one doesn’t look like Kate Upton or Matthew McConaughey?” Just last week, I was worried that my Target card had been hacked. Just last year, I was worried that the NSA had been reading my emails/listening to my phone calls. And now someday soon, I’ll get to worry about what my wife saw last night. Or not. In my humble castle, my wife’s favorite viewing is “Borgen.” Mine is “SportsCenter.” And I think that, “Brave New World” future be damned, that’s the way it’s going to stay in Casa Modest. But for you young people itching to try out this sex selfie, let me offer this: I know you’re all busy trying to dream up the latest get-rich-quick app, which doesn’t leave much time for you to brush up on Greek mythology. But perhaps there is one cautionary tale that applies, at least in this case. t’s the one about Narcissus. Go ahead, Google it. FEBRUARY 2014

fight like A girl everyone, how are those New Years Well resolution commitments holding up? If you are still grabbing that extra treat late at night and not seeing many results, we recomend you go visit Lyssa Bomgaars at TITLE boxing over in Tampa to get back on track. Hey, we don’t blame you for nosediving your workouts, but if you want something fun and that will really change your training forever, then this girl sure can show you the way! A recent addition the the Tampa area, Lyssa is an absolute professional when it comes to her training. We were lucky enough to grab her in between training sessions to ask her a few questions.
FL411: Why did you choose boxing over other things? Lyssa: Boxing is something that I have always admired. My trainer in Michigan introduced me to it, and from that moment on I couldn’t get enough! FL411: What is your background in Boxing? Lyssa: I really haven’t been boxing that long. Started with some work on the mitts, then moved to more bag work. It’s been about 4 years since I first put on a pair of gloves, but from that moment on I was completely hooked! I started working for TITLE Boxing Club when I lived in Michigan, and now living in Florida I’m back at it again and I couldn’t be happier. FL411: Tell us about TITLE boxing club, it looks like a pretty cool place to workout! Lyssa: TITLE is the best place to work out hands down! We
have an amazing staff! Our trainers are fun, and challenging, and each of them brings something different to each class. We are more than just a boxing gym though, TITLE is a family and we want each and every person walking through the doors to feel that. FL411: How do you workout, what do you focus on? Lyssa: When I workout I focus on my whole body but... My abs would definitely be a favorite. I definitely show off the six pack I created at TITLE Boxing Club every now and then. FL411: What is one piece of advice for other people looking to get back in shape for summer? Lyssa: One piece of advice, is that if you want the body and the life you’ve always dreamed of having... why wait to make it a reality? All you have to do is take the first step, or in our case throw the first punch. No one has the power to change you, but yourself so don’t wait until summer to get back in shape. Start NOW, right now...and earn your TITLE.
We got out of there before we were challenged for a fight but I can guarantee that this place is the perfect alternative to boost your personal goals for summer. Plus, TITLE is so confident that you’ll love their fitness club that they encourage you to try your First Shot Free. Take your fitness up a notch with custom personal training sessions! Call (813) 252-2726 today to start!

Why Go To YBOR ANYWAYS!
Our staff writer takes a trip into the heart of Ybor City Are you looking for that perfect night out? Well if you haven’t been to Ybor recently you’ve been missing out. This historic cigar district has a culture all its own, and is definitely the perfect place to unwind after a long day, or to celebrate any occasion. Ybor’s melting pot community gained its rich heritage through cigar manufacturing, something that has stuck with the area ever since. If you’re looking to take in all the area has to offer check out one of the many cigar shops off 7th Ave. such as King Corona Cigars Café and Bar. There you can find a cigar to match any mood, and it’s a great spot to enjoy a stogie while succumbing to Ybor’s stunning architecture and diverse culture. If dinner is in your plans you won’t have to go far to find a wide range of food options from sandwich fare eateries such as The Bricks and Hamburger Mary’s, to upscale dining establishments like Acropolis. Some must try places include the Carne Chophouse where you can demolish a Cuban take on the All-American steak 10

and potatoes meal, the Green Iguana for great pub food and drink specials, the original Columbia Restaurant for classic Cuban meals, El Puerto to experience excellent Argentinean flare, and Bernini of Ybor where you can experience a slice of Italy in an impressive upscale setting with great people watching perks. Bernini doesn’t just offer its patrons a great place to see what’s happening in Ybor, but it also offers some amazing signature dishes such as the Almond Crusted Red Snapper, and drink specials that will keep the ladies in your group primed for a great night. When you decide ramp up to the next level, don’t worry Ybor has got your back. There are a ton of clubs and bars to get fresh with someone you know, or whom
you’ve just met, each having a refreshing atmosphere all its own. I recommend stopping by Coyote Ugly for a round to take in the unique country/rock tone, and then heading down the street to the one of the well-known area clubs such as Club Skye.
If you’re not up for clubbing don’t leave Ybor quite yet, there’s something for you around the corner. If you enjoy tequila swing by the Centro Cantina where it’s always Margarita time, and where you can slam back the authentic Mexican liquor until
your legs get wobbly. If the vibe there isn’t quite right then hop on over to Tequila’s, the name says it all. If beer suits you better than a tequila binge would, be sure to check out New World Brewery which has an eclectic selection of crafts, the Double Decker where you can even play beer pong, or James Joyce Irish Pub where you can tour the world’s beers, and listen to live music. If you enjoy finer libations then head to the Ybor City Wine Bar to unwind from your hectic life. Not matter what brings you to Ybor, trust me, there’s a lot to keep you there. The area has everything anyone could want to go out, including a video arcade/restaurant (Game Stop), a comedy club (Tampa Improv), and a movie theater (Movico Centro Ybor 20). FEBRUARY 2014

Cat is being able to get rowdy (a Fireball shot-ski), yell at the referee on T.V. make new friends, and all this is possible because of Mr. Soleau. Any owner or manager that greets his customers by name is already making his business a success. Here is the trifecta. He went from table to table. Introducing himself, checking on customers, running food and being a perfect host. Impressive and welcoming, he asserts himself comfortably into every aspect of his business. The “regulars” spoke highly of his philanthropy, history in restaurants and love for his community. A veteran in the Clearwater restaurant business, his resume (according to “the regulars”) is impressive and noteworty. He raises customer service to a whole new level and the staff mirrors his infectious congeniality and perfectionism. As the live band began, I giggled at the bartenders doing the Pee-Wee Herman dance and loved hearing the whole (very large) crowd yell “TEQUILA” during the song. Outside I ran into some friends that live 40 minutes away. I asked why they were here and they replied “this place is our favorite, it is so worth the drive.” That it is, Mr. Soleau, that it is.

MUSICNEWS me makes me want to produce new music.” He states. He uses his surroundings to encompass his grandiose ideas, and then he focuses on his island flare to add the wow factor. Once he gets a solid percussion base down, he adds in each element he needs to truly get that distinctive Manny Marr style until it’s a symphony to your ears. Marr likes to think his tracks fuse chill, groovy, sexy, and hype into one volatile mixture of awesome sound. You may have heard some of his songs bumping from The Green Lemon, but be on the lookout for even more because he has an EP dropping this May. His 6 song self-titled album is going to showcase his irreplaceable style and it is sure to be a crowd pleaser. I had the privilege to preview a few tracks from Marr’s project, and let’s just say they a reminiscent of Pharell’s finest works. If you like Rick Ross, Timbaland, or David Guetta I’d try and get a copy of Manny Marr’s debut EP, before it’s sold out. If you can’t wait until it drops this May, check out some samples on his Sound Cloud page: www.soundcloud.com/mannymarr.
MANNY MARR M
anny Marr is a name you may want to get used to if you live in the Tampa/St. Pete area because you’ll be hearing a lot of it in coming years. The 22 year old Tampa native has been producing high energy beats for years, and is about to change the way you view electronic hip hop.
Marr, who derived his name from the Spanish word for ocean (because his beats flow like water and have distinct layers like the ocean depths), has always loved music and has played the drums since he was 10, a skill his father passed on to him from his time in Aruba. His beats are breathtakingly original, and his background in music production shines through, giving his pristine cuts and sick transitions the life they need to move your body. When you see his ability to blend different cultures into one stylistic masterpiece you realize what makes him someone to listen for when you’re out partying on South Howard. It’s no surprise that Marr’s unique island jam dub hop is taking the Tampa area by storm, but how does he find his inspiration? It’s easy for the 20

Gators Cafe and Saloon isn’t just a bar or restaurant, it is an experience. Guarding the threshold is Captain Morgan and a herd “alligators.” Volleyball nets are to your right and straight thru is the worlds longest waterfront deck, equipped with binoculars enhancing the breathtaking views. Bring the family including in-laws (2 floors & 5 bars you will never see them!) For the more distinguished guest, park your yacht on their boatslip and quench your thirst sipping a signature cocktail. The menu compliments the originality that singles Gators apart: coffee rubbed rib-eye, ULTIMATE nachos (a meal on its own!) or a 12 oz. Chili cheeseburger. M.O.D. Jeremy premiered a decadent, airy, crisp beer battered fish for guests to sample. Visual stimulation is everywhere, admire the alligators handcarved in the saloon bar, historical and hysterical memorabilia on the walls. Gators has successfully unified multiple WOW concepts from an exotic menu at the tiki-bar or listening to dueling pianos sipping a dirty banana (yum!), brew tasting in the saloon, shooters in the arcade/pool area or an original rum cocktail on the deck, they have it all.
You can find this DJ roaming the halls of SPC a lot these days. Campus started up just a little bit ago so Rollin Covell, aka DJ Rollin, has got his head in the books. But there is more to this student than it seems. When I first came across Rollin, it was through a highly anticipated performance from his HipHop group he is with. They go by the name of The Real Clash, and I caught a performance at Suite Six in St. Petersburg. When I walked in and saw the dim glow of green and a DJ by the name of Rollin on stage, I was a little taken back. You could feel the vibe of his entire group and know that in one way or another, he had everything to do with what I was hearing. I know he was talented, so I wanted to give him another listen. Lucky for me, I managed to catch a show that he puts on every so often at The Green Lemon over in Tampa. I met up with Manny Marr (yes, from the music section, page 20) to hear some of his live tracks and there was DJ Rollin yet again taking me back with his flawless transitions and perfect track selection that made The Green Lemon and my night just about perfect. I know that I will keep my eyes open for this DJ in 2014, I have a feeling we will see a lot of him!

While dining in the Tampa area “good Italian” is oxymoronic. Exception, travel to the infamous and eclectic zone of Y’bor and treat your pallete to an authentic Italian meal. Be prepared with an appetite, as you enter Bernini, tantalizing aroma’s of garlic, basil and tomato beckon your taste buds. Old world charm, sophisticated and classy describes the interior. The service, warm, friendly, and they always seemed to know what I would need in advance. The menu reads local favorites with the very talented chefs twist (Pistacho crusted grouper), unusual cuisine (a half duck with a dried cherry & vanilla demi-glace) or authentic Italian (caprese, or my favorite beef carpaccio). I arrived in time for $2 Finlandia Martini’s, the lemon drop was highly (and I know why) recommended by a patron. After three selective and delicious appetizers, I chose the Applewood Bacon Pizza. Please realize, Italian food means Nonni’s gravy to me, but even she would devour this scrumptious dish. Crispy applewood bacon, whole mozzarella cheese and a slightly sweet plum tomato sauce. Another strong recommendation is the Pork Osso Buca...amazingly tender. Save room for tiramisu! “Mangia bene!” FEBRUARY 2014

MOVIES POTPOURRI: THE MOVIE, well kinda...
“
If you’re a bit messed up, it gets 4 out of 4, if you’re sober, then it’s a solid 3 out of 4…
“
Sjustometimes movies mess with
your head, and sometimes you just know that if you’re a little drunk or high, you’d enjoy it more. Well, Potpourri is one of those movies! Basically the story of 5 philosophy students who have a paper due the next day, and if the paper doesn’t pass, they’re all out of college, Potpourri starts with a movie reviewer watching the movie with us! Well, the friends decide that the concepts involved in the course are too deep for them, and if they expand their minds with drugs, they might do a better job of understanding them…. and so, illicit substances are taken, and each student goes on a differ-
ent trip. One heads into a strange musical romp, two wind up in medieval times fighting for a princess, and the others end up in a zombie apocalypse. And, in the end, papers are turned in and…well, that would be giving it away, wouldn’t it? Potpourri is really just that, it’s a potpourri of genres all mixed up, and what could end up a big mess, somehow it all works. It does become a bit confusing toward the middle, but writer/director Elliot Diviney manages to pull it all together in the end to make Potpourri an excellent little head trip of a movie! I’m giving Potpourri 2 different ratings, if you’re a bit messed up, it gets 4 out of 4, if you’re sober, then it’s a solid 3 out of 4….but it’s worth seeing either way, you’ll just enjoy it more one way! HESAID/SHESAID Myth No. 1: It’s OK to skip Valentine’s Day
the 411 MYTHS of
VALENTINE RELATIONSHIPS Y
es, it’s that time of year again. Love is in the air and while a few of you may actually relish this time of year, most of you are probably confused as to what your other expects of you. After all, Valentine’s Day is a day to test your interest. However, don’t let the pressure get you down. Along with the stress also comes an invaluable opportunity to impress. A quick review of the following Valentine’s Day myths might surprise you — they may even burst some of your long-held beliefs about the holiday. So read on and you’ll be in good shape to minimize your effort and maximize the advantages that Valentine’s Day can afford you.
Why this is false: She might realize that it’s a hyped-up holiday, but that won’t get you off the hook completely. She’ll see her friends going on dates and wonder why you aren’t stepping up to the plate. What to do instead: You can keep Valentine’s Day low-key and celebrate it in your own way. Plan an activity that you both enjoy and declare it your own celebration — like ice skating or hiking. Any activity that you do together will show her that you gave the day some thought.
Myth No. 2: You’ve only been dating for a few months, so you won’t celebrate
Why this is false: While you might not want to do anything overly romantic with a new girlfriend, that doesn’t mean you have to ignore it. If you don’t acknowledge Valentine’s
Day at all, she might wonder if you are really interested in her. What to do instead: Don’t plan anything romantic. Instead, think of a fun activity. Try scheduling in a dance class or a cooking class to mix things up. Or, take her to see a comedy show — anything to get the two of you laughing together.
Myth No. 3: You have to celebrate on February 14th
Why this is false: No one says you have to celebrate on the same day as everyone else — that’s so conventional. What to do instead: Pick another day in the week to plan your date and declare that day your own personal Valentine’s Day. Places will be less crowded and you won’t be made to feel like another sheep in the crowd. She won’t care when you celebrate as long as she sees you’ve put some thought into it. She may even appreciate mixing it up.
Valentine’s Day gift
Why this is false: Actually, this myth is not entirely false. Lingerie can be a nice part of a gift for a self-assured woman, bearing in mind that you need to know her size and style preferences. But usually, she’ll like that to be part of a sexy gift — not all of it. What to do instead: For a really sexy gift, try buying a book on massage techniques that you can learn together or — if you are good and ready for it — a copy of the Kama Sutra. Keep in mind that a little originality will go a long way this Valentine’s Day. Forget boring conventions and have fun with it. The secret to a successful Valentine’s Day plan is making it your own. With just a wee bit of foresight and planning, your woman should be so pleased that she’ll be bragging to her friends about you all year long.
Myth No. 4: Lingerie makes a good

f you’re in the St. Pete Beach area (more specifically around Treasure Island) and are looking for fun in the sun mixed with party time antics and adult beverages, than look no further than Caddy’s on the Beach. This quality gem has been a staple of the Treasure Island area for years, and has a reputation as the best place to grab a drink and relax on the water. This ocean side establishment is a 20 something’s diamond in the rough, and is a great place to start or finish a marathon day on the beach. You’ll definitely be impressed by the surroundings, whether you decide to sit inside the facility or out. The decorative indoor area will allow you to recharge the batteries after hanging in the sun for hours with your friends. It will also give you a different experience than the beach side lounging area does, which is great because when you get tired of your surrounds, you can change them up. The artfully playful décor is usually complemented by a DJ or band of sorts, whom never play a bad piece. This makes the atmosphere at Caddy’s unrivaled in the area, and shows why they’ve been a Treasure Island main stay for so long. One thing is certain you can’t go to Caddy’s on the Beach and have a bad time. Even if you’re in a sour mood heading there, whether due to traffic, or a bad day in general, once you park you’ll be transported to an island paradise that will have you sipping on your favorite drinks under a beachside table or cabana in no time flat! What’s that, oh you’re hungry you say, well Caddy’s has some good news for you: they’ve been long known to have Treasure Island’s best barbeque, so eat up!
BESTBEACHES
You’ll be able to indulge in some delicious down home fixin’s while staring at the scenery and the amazing Gulf of Mexico too. One taste of a Caddy’s BBQ Combo will have you rarin’ to go and reaching for another cold one. If you’re looking for more of a classic meal, try their St. Louis style ribs, which have been voted best on the beach. At Caddy’s, once the food is gone and your stomach has settled it’s time to get back in the game, and grab another round. If you’re feeling a little too full for more beer don’t worry, Caddy’s has thought of everything. They actually offer a full liquor bar to make sure you can get to your hazy paradise whichever way you want. So grab a classic beach cocktail such as a Mai Tai, or even a Margarita for a little Mexican flare and continue to enjoy all that is Caddy’s. Just make sure to tip the staff and you’ll be in your own little slice of heaven until it’s time to retreat back to the real world. If you need a break from the lively action at all corners, just head out for a relaxing walk on the beach to soak in Florida’s pristine coastline, and amazing views of the Gulf. After you decide it’s time to pull a Maverick and reengage, then head straight back to the bar and take advantage of one of the many specials Caddy’s runs throughout the week and weekend. The bottom line is that the bartenders are always cheerful, and the surroundings will have you wondering what time, and day it is after you sink in and let loose. Make sure you have your party hat on when visiting and you’ll love the upbeat tunes coming from every speaker, as well as the culture erupting all around you. This place is truly what a beach bar should be. Don’t let the neighborhood vibe from the road fool you, Caddy’s is like your favorite redneck uncle’s mullet, business in the front, and all party in the back. If you’re down to eat some delicious home style food, pound drinks for days, and dance the night away, I would make Caddy’s on the Beach your next (and possibly only) stop on St. Pete Beach, plain and simple. CIGARS:
The heart and soul of Tampa
An amazing but true comment by Tampa, Florida council member Linda Saul-Sena as a City Council motion to designate 15 area cigar factories – none of which make cigars anymore – as historical landmarks was debated last Thursday. Saul-Sena told the Tampa Tribune, “They’re the heart and soul of the city.” Tampa’s long history as the cigar-making capital of America is undisputed and both the West Tampa and Ybor City areas were home to dozens of factories over the last century. There are 15 factories which could be designated: • A. Santella & Co., at 1906 North Armenia Avenue; • Andres Diaz, at 3102 North Habana Avenue; • Balbin Brothers, at 1202 North Howard Avenue; • Bustillo Bros. & Diaz, at 2111 North Albany Avenue; • Garcia y Vega/Villazon & Co., at 3104 North Armenia Avenue; • La Corina, at 202 South 22nd Street; • La Mega/V. Guerra at 201 North 26th Street; • Morgan Cigar Co., at 2802 North Howard Avenue; • Perfecto Garcia, at 2808 North 16th Street; • Salvatore Rodriguez, at 402 South 22nd Street; • San Martin & Leon, at 2202 North Howard Avenue; • Samuel I. Davis, at 900 North Howard Avenue; • Tierra Del Lago, at 1908 North 36th Street; • Thompson Cigar, at 200 North Edison Avenue; • Y. Pendas & Alvarez, at 2301 North Albany Avenue. Five of the 15 sites are unwilling to accept the designation since designation as a historical
SMOKE landmark will require the owners to maintain the buildings and accommodate a long list of requirements. Bubba Ellis, the owner of the A. Santella Cigar Factory building (built in 1910!), told the Tribune that the preservation guidelines are so voluminous that “it makes ‘War and Peace’ look like the drivethrough menu at Steak & Shake.” The owner of the Y. Pendas & Alvarez Cigar Factory building, Jeff Freeman, told the paper that he does not have the money to keep the building to standards which could be imposed by preservation boards and other governmental entities. The matter will be taken up once again on November 17, with discussions to continue in the interim to satisfy the recalcitrant five. According to Ciudad de Cigars: West Tampa by Armando Mendez (Florida Historical Society: Tampa, 1994), Tampa cigar history dates back to “1838, when Count Odet Philippe settled in the Tampa Bay area and brought with him a female slave who had learned the art in Cuba. Although the unnamed slave’s principal job was to produce cigars for his personal use, Philippe, who operated an oyster shop near Fort Brooke [now downtown Tampa] sold the excess cigars to the soldiers of the fort.” By 1890, there were 129 cigar factories in Key West, but in 1892, the Del Pino Bros. Factory was established in the Tampa area. By 1893, there were 18 in Ybor City and 25 in West Tampa. Some of the factories up for designation produced some of the most popular brands in the U.S.: • The Perfecto Garcia factory’s namesake brand was one of the most popular cigars in the Midwest
in the 1940s and 1950s and is still made today (in the Dominican Republic) for the Arango Cigar Company. • Perhaps the most popular brand in the country in the 1950s was Gold Label, made by Gradiaz & Annis, which occupied the Samuel I. Davis factory from 1929-33. Gradiaz & Annis eventually bought the Morgan Cigar Company (a 1907 building also up for designation) and G&A was eventually bought by General Cigar Company in 1964, now a unit of Swedish Match. One of Morgan’s brands, still in production, was Don Sebastian, a handmade mass-market brand now made in the Dominican Republic. • General also owns the Garcia y Vega/Villazon & Co. factory, opened in 1907, which created the famed Garcia y Vega brand – still widely sold today – and was revived by Villazon (now a unit of General Cigar) in 1971. It produced many machinemade brands, including Bances, Lord Beaconsfield, Pedro Iglesias, Topstone, Villa de Cuba and Villazon Deluxe. These are now made in the Dominican Republic. From Russia with leaf! More evidence that the popularity of cigars continues to spread worldwide, this time in Russia. Seeing a roller making fresh cigars is nothing new to American audiences, but it’s new to Russians passing by the picture window at Old Havana, a restaurant in southern Moscow. The roller is 68-year-old Carlos Valdez Mosquerra, who learned the trade in Cuba starting at age 15 and worked for much of his career at the La Corona factory. He’s still a part of the Cuban cigar trade, on loan to Old Havana since April. He will return to spend the Russian winter in the Caribbean sunshine of his native country. His wife and five children all work as rollers in Havana. Mosquera said he is well paid as roller, both in Russia and at home. He noted that the monthly stipend for rollers in Cuba is only 500 pesos (about $20), but is helped by state-supplied or subsidized goods. He’s been a traveling ambassador for Cuba’s cigar industry, with stints in China, Scotland and South Africa among other stops. The nine different shapes he makes by hand in Moscow go for the equivalent of $35 to $87 apiece, extremely expensive, but quite popular. “Cigars equal pleasure,” he told the Moscow Times, “When you are smoking a cigar, you feel you are on cloud nine.” One interesting part of the story by correspondent Svetlana Graudt was this passage: “Mosquerra said he was not bothered by the incongruity between his life in Cuba and the unrestrained pleasures he has seen around the world. “‘I was born in Havana at the time when Cuba was still capitalist,’ he said. ‘So I know what it can be like.’” Tampa truly is an amazing place to be! FEBRUARY 2014
For opening ceremonies, we are headed to The Brass Monkey. Baltimore in the tropics we are going in light with a decadent, scrumptious “all killer, no filler” crabcake and stick with a bucket of beer, we have 9 bars to go! Time for Italy to shine. Next stop is Gennaro’s for an authentic Italian Mimosa (vitamin C) and every good athlete needs their carbs so Penne Pasta with Spinach and Olive Oil will give us energy. Take the plunge, to the dive bar we go. Shadracks for a couple shots of Fireball and hanging out with the biker crowd. Admire the Harley’s and off to the main event. Stopping at Sea Critters Cafe we are definitely sharing the Knock Out Punch, a delicious blend of rums, tropical juices and spices served in a fish bowl. Give us two straws and top it with Bacardi 151. A quick power snack, Caribbean fish wrap with mango salsa, leaves us just enough room for dessert, a Reef Runner with coconut and mango rums, Blue Curaco and O.J. Our sports bar of choice is The Wharf, a Killians on draft and catching the score of the hockey game. The game is tied and in overtime, so we might as well order a Belgium Waffle draught, kick back and watch patrons park their boats on The Wharfs’ boat slip. Mi Amore, indulge in a little romance at the Restaurant Su Ottava, a glass of Pinot Noir, freshly baked Italian bread and a delectable appetizer “Capelli Infornati” mushroom caps filled with fresh crab meat. Now off to the closing ceremonies. In the heart of Pass A Grille we will begin at the first floor of The Hurricane. Yes, that means a hurricane cocktail, up to the second floor a signature and well deserved Colossal Margarita salted rim and fresh lime, the conscientious connoisseur take note: the menu is allergy friendly and Kosher available. The third floor is where we reach the gold. Sit down and take in the tranquil and serene views of the Gulf on the roof top bar crowning our achievement with a snifter of Grand Marnier.

SPORTSTALK
How Manning could owe New Jersey money since he lost the Super Bowl. by Greg Campbell
As if Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning
didn’t have enough pressure to win the Super Bowl on Sunday, avoiding the New Jersey tax authorities can be added to the list. New Jersey is one of several states that impose a socalled “jock tax” on visiting athletes who compete on their home turf. And thanks to the convoluted arithmetic required by the New Jersey tax code, if the Broncos lose to the Seattle Seahawks, and if Manning continues playing for the Broncos next season, his New Jersey tax bill for Sunday’s appearance could be bigger than his paycheck for the game. New Jersey bases the tax bill for athletes on a
Sea Hags Chocolate 10 x 5.825.indd 1 | AdFEBRUARY 2014 320020023FL411
calculation of the number of days they’re in the state for official business and their overall yearly income. Each player on the winning team will earn $92,000; losers get $46,000 each. After the Super Bowl, Manning’s 2014 income to date, when playoff bonuses are included, will be either $157,000 or $111,000, depending on whether the Broncos win or lose, with a respective tax bill of $1,575 or $982. Where it gets complicated, according to an article in Forbes, is whether or not doctors will force Manning to retire based on an offseason exam to evaluate extensive surgery Manning had on his neck. If he’s cleared to keep playing, his 2014 earnings will be either $15,157,000 or $15,111,000 (again, depending on whether the Broncos win or lose). Earning an extra $15 million would generally be considered a good thing, but in that event, his overall 2014 income would push him into New Jersey’s top tax bracket, Forbes reported. And the tax bill will be collected before he’s earned the money. So in the event that Manning does continue playing, his tax bill would be $46,989 on the $92,000 bonus for winning the Super Bowl, or 51.08 percent. However, if the Broncos lose, the tax bill would
be $46,844 on the $46,000 losers cut, or 101.83 percent. In other words, Manning will owe New Jersey $844 for the privilege of losing the Super Bowl, assuming that he continues playing next season. “At this point,” wrote Forbes guest columnist K. Sean Packard, a CPA, “his only tax-planning tools would be to retire or demand a trade in the offseason.”

Olympus OM-D
Olympus
The world of photography has certainly improved by leaps and bounds over the years, and this has also led to a thriving cottage industry of wedding photographers who have seemingly mushroomed in recent times. After all, it is a whole lot more affordable than film photography as you do not need to have that kind of innate skill right from the get go – just shoot and pray that one shot out of the many will look good when loaded onto the computer. Still, this is not to discount the fact that eventually, quality work and skill will win in the end, and having the right tool would go a long way in helping you along your journey. With the Olympus OM-D E–M10 camera, this interchangeable lens camera will merge outstanding image quality, speed and power of the flagship Olympus OM-D E-M1 and the Olympus OM-D E-M5 into an extremely compact and stylish all-metal body.
Orion headphones beacon
Not all headphones are created equal, which is why there is always a ready market for the higher end models, mid-range devices as well as entry level ones. Once in a while, something that is more special than the rest would also pop into the picture, and this is where the $49.99 Beacon Audio Orion Headphones makes an appearance. The Beacon Audio Orion headphones are colorful on-ear stereo headphones that be accompanied by a one-button in-line microphone and remote control, where you can pick from two color combinations – Red/White or Black/Blue.
Dr who collector series dalek
Are you a huge Doctor Who fan? If you have answered in the affirmative, then you would know that if there is anything at all to do with Doctor Who, merchandise included, it would be worth checking out the $199.99 Doctor Who Collector Series Dalek Watch. Touted to be one of the last vestiges of the great Time War, this is a limited-edition Doctor Who Dalek timepiece which comes in a beautiful gold case.
Being more than just a pair of headphones, you could more or less call this a fashion accessory as well. After all, doesn’t your choice depict who you are as well as how you “consume” your music? At least this particular pair is stylish enough, and would be able to pass off as a decent purchase. Clearly sitting somewhere in the mid-range side of things, they will boast of the vibrant styling that you would find in modern over-ear headphones, where it will play nice with any audio device that has a standard headphone jack. As for the remote functionality of its in-line microphone, it will be compatible with majority of the other smartphones out there in the market. | FL411 33 FEBRUARY 2014

FL411: Whats up Tyler. Whats going on in your world? Tyler: Aside from starting up a semester at USF and working? Not too much. I am loving this Florida weather, I wouldnt want it any other way. FL411: USF, which campus? We noticed there are a few around. Tyler: I go to the Tampa campus. It’s up by Busch gardens. I know that there is a campus in St. Petersburg but I don’t have any classes over that way. When I come over there it’s for First Fridays or to hit up the beach every once in a while. FL411: Where can you been seen around town? Tyler: Well, since I live closer to the USF Tampa campus, I tend to stay out this way. I guess you can find me out and about in South Tampa. The DRYNK just reopened as some 3-D thing I have been wanting to check out. Other than that, I’ll see you at the beach! FL411: Tyler, thanks a lot for your time. Do you have any plans for Spring Break this year? Tyler: Oh a little of this, a little of that. Haha. But its hard to plan something when I have the best beaches in the country right here! See ya later FL411!
FL411: Welcome to FL411! What do you want to tell our readers? Jackie: Hey FL411 my name is Jackie… I have been living in Florida for about 8 years now.. I recently moved to Madeira Beach from Fort Lauderdale about 6 months ago. I am loving it here especially seeing all the dolphins and manatees while I’m out paddle boarding!! I look at it as I live where you vacation hehe. FL411: What do you do down here in FL? Jackie: I am currently working at the Double Tree in North Redington Beach as a Food and Beverage Manager. I am also a licensed massage therapist which I do on the side part time.. Busy Busy Bee!! FL411: Where can our readers find you around town? Jackie: If you are looking to find me around the town, the beach is the first place you should look… I love playing beach volleyball, laying in the sun all oiled up, or just hanging at the local tiki bar with some friends! If you haven’t been to the toasted monkey yet or the undertow I recommend you check those places out they have a great crowd and volleyball courts.. two for one in my book. When im not on the beach I have to get my gym fix in at Beach Front Fitness. and just relax and enjoy whatever the rest of the day brings. | FL411 37 FEBRUARY 2014
