ROBOTS
It’s a great era to live in...robots are slowly being developed to make our lives easier and do some amazing things. Below are our top four robotic choices for 2014 that are making history. Lets hope these things don’t enslave the human race!

BEAR
BINA48
ATLAS
ASIMO
While robots have the ability to make our lives easier, they also have the ability to make our lives much safer. A robot developed by Vecna Technologies, known as the Battlefield ExtractionAssist Robot (BEAR), is being used as a rescue android in dangerous situations. Its capabilities include being able to carry heavy objects over long and rough distances (including stairs), surprising dexterity and balance, and explosion- and fireresistant treads and batteries. BEAR can be easily controlled by a remote or glove and could be used to enter dangerous situations and rescue injured soldiers without risking anyone else’s life. BEAR’s massive steel frame is controlled by hydraulics capable of lifting up to 520 lbs and it can sense its environment through infrared, night vision, and optical cameras. Plus, while BEAR definitely has the ability to do heavy lifting, it also has the dexterity to hold something as delicate as an egg without breaking it. It can balance perfectly while carrying heavy objects that would usually topple other robots of its kind. BEAR has come a long way since its original designs, and now has the ability to obey higher-level commands from its operators. It’s even fitted with a friendly humanoid face to put the wounded at ease. Developers are excited to continue improving BEAR’s capabilities to help save citizens and soldiers alike in dangerous situations.
The Breakthrough Intelligence via Neural Architecture, or BINA48, has quickly achieved the title of the most shockingly realistic android ever made. BINA48 was created and programmed by David Hanson of Terasem Movement and modeled after the co-founder of Terasem’s wife, Bina Rothblatt. While everyone can agree that BINA48 has an uncanny physical resemblance to an actual person, what makes the robot so groundbreaking is that she is actually made up of the real Bina’s thought, memories, emotions, and feelings. The project took over 100 hours of compiling Bina’s thoughts, to be downloaded into the android. BINA48 now has the ability to hold conversations on a number of intellectual topics using the actual Bina’s mannerisms. BINA48 also has the ability to continually learn, and her vocabulary and knowledge continue to grow each day that she interacts with other humans. While she currently isn’t fitted with a body, her head alone has the ability to express over 64 feelings based on the information she gives and receives. BINA48’s abilities are quite unsettling to many, though the creators hope to continue to build and improve her technological consciousness. Not only can BINA48 make choices on her own based on her past memories and tastes, she is also learning to reinforce her decisions with data and reasons.
On July 11, DARPA revealed one of the most technologically advanced robots to date. Known as Atlas, the robot stands almost two meters (six feet) tall and weighs about 150 kilograms (330 lbs). Developed by Boston Dynamics, the robot was made to be a humanoid responder for dangerous situations like nuclear meltdowns. It’s set to participate in DARPA’s robot challenge in December as Boston Dynamics continues to make improvements to the software. While Atlas already looks like something straight out of Terminator, things get even creepier when you realize what it’s capable of doing. With its 28 hydraulic joints, arms, legs, head, torso, sensors, and on-board real-time computer, Atlas can not only sense its environment, but can react to it with a dexterity not yet seen in an android robot. It can perform basic functions like walking, grabbing, turning, and giving visual feedback, but it’s also capable of doing things like climbing a ladder, starting and driving a car, and connecting a fire hose to a valve. The robot’s real-time computers and lasers allow for its environment to be sensed and mapped even at long ranges. DARPA uses the robotic challenge to encourage advancements in robotics like Atlas, and they’re confident that it will not only do well in the challenge, but extend its abilities to real-world uses as well.
Built by Honda, the Advance Step In Innovative Mobility robot, or ASIMO, was first unveiled in October 2000. While its stature isn’t anything to gawk at—it stands just 1.3 meters (4.3 ft) tall and weighs 54 kilograms (119 lbs)—it’s ASIMO’s capabilities that set it apart. The robot was designed to be a personal assistant, helping those who can’t help themselves. It runs on a battery and, while it doesn’t have a mind of its own, it can be controlled by a computer, controller, or voice signals. That probably seems pretty run of the mill so far, but ASIMO also has the ability to differentiate and interact with humans by sensing postures, gestures, sounds, and even faces. If you were to walk in a room, ASIMO would turn to face you and actually shake your hand if you were to put it out first. It can even distinguish one person from another for up to 10 people. ASIMO has been showcased at several conventions and can currently be seen in a show at Disneyland. While it’s not the most upto-date robot, ASIMO’s capabilities and humanoid qualities continue to keep it in the running with the more current androids. With one of the top innovative companies backing this little guy, needless to say we here at FL411 are overly excited to see what developments will happen in the next couple of years!

Some tasks are too important to be left to humans. Just ask Hal 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The 1968 film gave the world the ultimate all seeing, all knowing - and apparently all ego - AI villain. It set the standard for machines that can think (and kill) like us but are too powerful to control.
Robots that turn into giant trucks - way cool. Robots that turn into giant trucks and command a fleet of autobots - now that could change pop culture history. Such was the impact of the Transformer when the toy line was introduced in 1984, spawning decades of TV shows, movies, and comic books.
Greetings. I am the AWESOM-O 4000. in One of our favorite south park episodes, eric cartman dresses up as the AWESOME-o robot sent from Japan to be butters personal robot. which do you prefer, the asimo or the awesome-o? Send us an email to info@ fl-411.com and let us know what you like best!
Apparently robots of the future like to hit the gym. Out of a long line of assassin bots, the Terminator is the perfect blend of indestructibility and determination. With him, James Cameron personified what we really fear about robots: They’d do better without us.
the Abbott and Costello of space - may be the most popular robots in history, but it’s the littler one that really steals the show. Sure, C-3PO could walk and speak 6 million languages, but R2-D2 proved that robots can be emotive without being humanoid and don’t need to speak English to communicate.

FITNESS
K
ettlebells are one of the hottest new fitness trends, but there’s actually nothing new about them. The weighted balls with handles were originally used in Russia during the 1700s, reportedly as a weight to measure grains and other goods.
HOW TO Kettlebell The end result is a dynamic, whole-body exercise routine that incorporates cardiovascular, resistance and range-of-motion training into one workout. It’s one of the best ways to utilize your time at the gym. So go ahead, reach under the freeweight racks and dust off those Kettlebells that noone uses. Your body will be thanking you when you finally get out on the beach this summer!
During festivals, vendors started to swing the kettlebells to show their strength, and from there perhaps the first kettlebell workouts were born. Today, everyone from professional athletes to Hollywood celebrities and fitness buffs are embracing this “workout of all workouts,” most likely because they’ve discovered it’s a phenomenal way to build muscle, stamina and cardio fitness all wrapped up into one intense workout. Unlike lifting a dumbbell, which keeps your center of gravity fixed, kettlebells incorporate movements that throw off your center of gravity and use your core muscles to keep you balanced. Plus, you don’t look like everyone else doing their beach workout before the summer comes!

///////////// TRAINING CORNER TRY THESE MOVES
Try our top moves for beginners shown below:
Two-handed kettlebell swing Stand up straight, with feet a bit wider than hipdistance apart. Grab hold of the kettlebell with both hands, keeping your palms face down and arms in front of your body. Maintain a slight bend to the knee and drive the hips back, lowering the body — but not too low, this isn’t a squat! Then, in a fluid motion, explosively drive the hips forward while swinging the kettlebell, keeping the glutes and core engaged.
Two-arm kettlebell row Grab two kettlebells for this one. Place them in front of your feet and bend your knees slightly. Next, bend over to grab both kettlebells and pull them toward your stomach, keeping your elbows close to your body and your back straight. Lower the weights, repeat for 12-15 reps max.
Kettlebell Windmill Hold the kettlebell in the right hand and angle the feet 45 degrees away from the right arm. Raise the kettlebell overhead, lock the arm, and keep your eyes on the weight. Shift your weight onto the right leg and begin bending forward at the waist. Keep the right arm extended overhead as the body bends forward and the left arm is pointed toward the ground. Lift back up slowly, staying in control. Repeat for 6-8 reps on each side.

It has also given me so much confidence along my journey. The circle is a sacred shape and my relationship with my hoop is sacred to me. Being able to entertain and/or teach people gives me endless joy. I want to see just how far I can challenge myself to learn and come up with new moves and concepts. I want to preform and also teach classes/workshops for those who want to learn the love that comes with hoop dancing. 10

My name is Catarina Boyd. I’m 18 years old and hoop dancing is my passion. I’ve been dancing for a year and five months now. I’ve spent anywhere from 2 to sometimes even 12 hours at a time getting lost in my flow. I have loved it since the first time I picked it up. It has taken me away from so much negativity in my life and will forever be my escape. I put a lot of bruises, hard work, sweat, and emotion into my progress. Edm is my favorite type of music to dance to, the always changing beats help me with different styles of my dancing. I also sing and I’m an artist, so being creative has always been in my blood. I think one of the reasons I love it so much is because never once will you repeat a performance, it’s always changing, it’s always new and fresh. I love captivating my audience and all of the wonderful feedback I receive. I am proud to say I am a hoop dancer and I always will be working at improving my skills and learning new tricks. It’s beautiful, it is art, and it has saved my life.

FL411: Have you always been interested in design? KHOI: Yes. Since childhood I liked to draw and I just happened to be good at it too. My high school teachers pushed me to pursue something in the creative arts. FL411: What made you want to do this as a career? KHOI: I actually wanted to get into professional arm wrestling but soon realized I was better at typography and design. FL411: What are you most proud of? KHOI: I am most proud of repeat clients and referrals because it tells me I must be something right. FL411: What advice would you give yourself when you were in school? KHOI: I would tell my college self to take more risks creatively and try to find your own style of design. FL411: MAC or PC? KHOI: Mac....never a question.

Mac and Cheese Throwdown Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, Tampa The city’s first-ever “Mac & Cheese Throwdown” will feature casseroles from more than two dozen local restaurants. Local chefs will compete in three categories: “classic mac,” “brews and mac” for recipes paired with craft beer, and “wine and cheese,” featuring highend cheeses. The event, scheduled from 4 to 10 p.m., is free and open to the public, with proceeds from mac and cheese sales benefitting the nonprofit Friends of the Riverwalk. There will be live bands, craft beer and wine and games. If successful, the idea is for the throwdown to become an annual event.

THEY HAVE IT ALL
Shuck up! They got ‘em, oysters that is, in addition to many other bottom dwelling favorites (like Alaskan snow crab) at their sea food bar. This is the premiere place for PO boys, purple hooters and plenty of partying. Barefoot Bar “Don’t just grin...bare it” says it all. Set on a private bay beach, ride your waverunner right up for a rum runner, play some corn hole or have a few beers around a beachfront fire pit. Inside there are plenty of T.V.’s to enjoy your favorite sports games. Outside however, is the place to be. The menu is original, colorful and fun yes, fun! Every ecclectic item was on my list to try but here are the musts: anything (ANYTHING) with the buffalo sauce it is kick-ass spicy, grilled smokey aspargus (yummy), tequila & garlic dippin’ shrimp and crab cake sliders. Other customers recommended the lobster bisque and gator bites. Another reason to go there, as if... How about sand volleyball courts, the eargasmic music of Impulse or simply sitting by the firepit, the lulling lapping of the tide a few feet away, an ice cold beer in your hands and the swaying sounds of the steel drum, yup you don’t need another reason. Why? Because, they have it all. 18

Well whatever you’re searching for you can be sure that the smooth island reggae melodies of The Hip Abduction’s jams will bring you to a place of peace, love, and happiness. The band’s African music roots shine through in a breathtakingly refreshing symphony of sound that tantalizes your ear drums and sooths your soul. Their dub-reggae beats and 7-piece band blend together influences of Bob Marley, Sublime, the Hawaiian phenom SOJA, and even some Matisyahu into one harmonious ensemble that will peacefully rock your world with each passing second. They have truly found the perfect blend of island jam beats, reggae tones, and 20 FL411 | MAY 2014
uplifting lyrics that create a delightful masterpiece on stage, and send you far away from any real world worries you may have. The emotions of the songwriters shine through in the mood of each song, taking you on a wonderful journey through positive emotions that create a smile on all who listen. If you are looking for that perfect blend of music, you better get to their website (thehipabduction.com) immediately and find the next time they play near you, because it may just change your outlook on life. Their loyal Florida following will be sure to welcome you into their arms, and sing and dance the night away with you; alongside old and new friends alike. If you don’t feel like taking a roadie to see them across the Southeast (which you will soon enough), don’t worry because they will be in Ybor City at the Tropical Heatwave Cuban Club on May 10, celebrating another day living the paradise dream. It’s going to be an amazing set featuring new smash hits such as “Holiday” and “Live it Right” (both personal favorites of FL411 staff), as well as classic hits like “Children of the Sun”
which are sure to mellow your mood, and take you to a personal happiness you’ve never experienced before. If you’re looking for that link to reconnect you to your soul and to Mother Earth, look no further than The Hip Abduction. Once you’ve visited their YouTube page and heard all the band has to offer, you will definitely become one of their biggest fans (trust me on this one), and are sure to be a happier person in general because of it.

Shipwreck - CWB By Danielle Zubrod
The Green Lemon By Jeff Thomas
Sea Hags By Danielle Zubrod
If you google “neighborhood bars” in the Tampa area, find Shipwreck. This proud pirate theme bar (no food served, but take out menus available) is anchored on North Clearwater Beach. Not just a bar, this is an experience. The best atmosphere, the best bartenders (think hot, sexy cool) and the best kept secret! Specials run daily ($3.75 Fireball 3 days a week), happy hour is more like happy day ($2.25 drafts 1-9 daily), and monthly theme parties (Seamans Ball: old school Navy or Pin-up!) D.J. is 6 nights a week, Sundays Flashy Ashlei and Mondays house music. The “wreck” is features S.I.N. night every Tuesday, pool tournament (the only one on the beach) every Thursday, bar size Jenga, cornhole and more. Come check out this nautical nuance , have a draft out of an ice cold mason jar, do a pink pussy shot and play any one of several virtual games or just watch the Rays on one of their new 50” screens. C’mon lets get Shipwrecked! Aaargghh...
Take a trip to SoHo and make sure that you stop in at The Green Lemon to feed your ears some of the freshest beats you can find. When we had a chance to check out “the Lemon”, we sat down with Manny Marr (you may remember him from our February Issue) to hear a teaser of an upcoming track of his. DJ Rollin (Soundcloud.com/ dj-rollin-727) likes to pepper in some original tracks into his mixes, which seems appropriate. They like to mix original flavors into their mouth-watering creations, why not the music as well? A sleek and modern SoHo vibe mixes with a south of the border feel to give you the perfect start to any night. Don’t just take my word for it though, make sure you head over to their facebook page, (/eatgreenlemon) and check out some of the event pictures by Lo Vazquez Photography! So come on out and hang out. The food here is beyond amazing, and the prices are great. The only thing fresher than their guacamole is the Music.
Continuing with locals favorites, ahoy Matey the grub is all about the galley at Sea Hags. The menu reads local fare (grouper, cubans) but with flair (the marina salad add on the sesame crusted tuna), split a bucket with your shipmates (fried seafood or chicken) go south with gourmet quesadillas or go Italian with one of their many specialty pizzas. Sea Hags has something for “all hands”, featuring generous portions and scrumptious cuisine. Dock your boat at this picturesque seascape and watch your favorite sports events on their many T.V.s. Inside the ambiance is creatively decorated with old nautical charm and sailboat masts, outside sit at the Tiki Bar or the patio. By land or by sea (or trolley) this is the place to belly up, must haves are: onion rings, fried cod and hush puppies! Sipping a rum runner while watching the tourists maneuver boats from the Marina is entertaining but the real fun is after dark featuring live entertainment. Set your compass for Sea Hags and “splice the main brace” with some grog! Ahoy!

pring has sprung, but have you? If not, you or your relationship may need a spring cleaning. Look around, the sun is shining, birds are chirping and yes, bees are buzzing. You may see more people out and about, couples holding hands, and singles wearing less…to impress.
As we start to put away sweaters and coats…perhaps organize our messy closet and venture to find the many beach accessories we will surely need; I wonder do people spring clean their selves or their relationships too? Well, maybe they should…we all should. Now is the time (unless you have done so already)
to let go of the old, past relationships and work on yourself. Invest time in getting to know, who you are, what you want for the future, and if that involves another person. Once that is settled- go OUT! Get your girls or guys and hit up the patio bar, sing some bad karaoke and make new friends. Try not to go looking for “the one”…go out and look for FUN! If you’re lucky, you’ll meet some great people, and maybe make some love…or sex…connections. Remember, if you just want to date, be upfront, and if you’re really looking for something serious, then be honest about that too.
with your partner and some new found loving and love-making. Forget about old arguments (who was right and who was wrong); take the time to compliment your partner at least once a day; and you can never say, I love you too much (well at least not if they love you back). Now, that those good habits are established…be corny- you love them, they love you… be corny together. Create some funny video blogs in bed (be careful of the rating- keep it PG-13, if your friends are going to see it), bake cookies together…eat them together; indulge in a new activity outside (biking or swimming) and do that thing you always wanted to try but were afraid too. Bondage anyone?!
Now, if you’re in a relationship and you have addressed all the above questions, focus on the future of that relationship in order to have a stronger connection
Spring is the time for love, whether you are in a committed relationship, single, or dating. Make the most of it by living, loving and of course, giving.

L by Danielle Zubrod
ooking for some serious wildlife? Not the shot paddle, bikini bar and city-scape kind, but real wildlife, as in an armadillo crossing your path, an egret swooping for a fish or a rattler slithering by. While known for our sugar sand beaches, iconic night life and love for grouper we Tampa Bayians are also proud and protective of our gifts from mother nature. The State Parks here are fantastic reminders of Florida at its finest. When I first moved here, I looked for a park to bring my dogs swimming. I found Honeymoon Island (State Park in Dunedin) and one of my favorite memories is watching my son swimming alongside our two dogs, as I snapped the picture two dolphins photobombed in the background, making it a true Kodak moment. Altogether there are 12 parks within an hour of Tampa. My personal favorites are Caladesi, Honeymoon Island, Anclote Key and a must visit is Fort DeSoto. 24 FL411 | MAY 2014
BEACH
STATEPARKS Starting anywhere on Clearwater Beach (for those athletic enough) just walk North on the shore line. Since there are no roads, the only way to Caladesi Island (voted one of America’s best beaches in 2008) is by foot or by boat making it the most serene and tranquil of the parks aforementioned. About a 2.5 mile walk, expect to see gliding manta-rays, curious dolphins and shy little hermit crabs scurrying over your path. As you pass the “seashell” tree take a few pictures and spend a minute or two admiring all that have contributed to this makeshift path marker. Set up for the day almost anywhere to indulge yourself on what feels like your own personal private beach. The fish are biting so all you saltwater anglers, select this tranquil setting is perfect for an unobstructed cast. Three miles of trails take you all around this secluded and romantic treasure. Kayaking in and around St. Joseph Sound (the waterway surrounding Caledesi and Honeymoon Islands) you will be awestruck by the untouched beauty that surrounds you. Conchs bigger than your hand, rays curiously waving at you, breathtaking century old mazes of mangroves with mother natures own bouquets of exotic and tropical flowers, this is truly paradise. Honeymoon Island is a favorite for canine companionship. An entire beach is devoted to our beloved four legged friends. Trails, beaches, fields and even showers are available to pamper your pet. Play frisbee, jump over waves or simply hike through the furry friendly nature trails. Critters peek out curiously to introduce themselves. One of the best beaches around for shelling or tide pool investigations, Honeymoon Island (originally named Hog Island) was named for the 50 palm thatched huts designed for honeymooners in the late 1930’s by a New York developer. One of the best reasons for a visit to this park is to view one of the last remaining virgin slash pine forests in Florida. Fort Desoto is the Disneyworld for nature lovers and history
buffs. The majestic natural tapestry is home to an abundant array of wildlife. From fins to feathers you can swim with manatees, dolphins and rays or fly kites with Egrets, Osprey and Pelicans. Sunbathing and tidal flats surround the 1,136 acre park, 7 cemented miles of trails allow bikers to explore the five connected keys. Our nations past is present at the Quartermaster Storehouse Museum which adds to the antiquity of the park as well as our nations history. Once inhabited by Tocobaga Indian tribe, the history of this park includes being the practice target for the bomber that bombed Hiroshima along with being surveyed by Robert E. Lee. Lastly is Aneclote Key Preserve. This primitive collection of Islands offers diversity when choosing which park to visit. Only accessible by boat or ferry, spend the night under a blanket of stars but be weary, this is a true nature preserve, no electricity, no running water! A graceful and proud lighthouse (circa 1887) adds to the spectacular scenery and birdwatchers beware, this is your heaven on earth. Anclote Key is home to over 43 species of birds including the American Bald Eagle, Oyster-catchers and the adorable Piping Plover. Bring your paddleboards, picnics and pitch a tent. Bring the kids and show them what life was like before I-phones and Xbox! Even the ride over is an adventure, leaving from the historic docks in Tarpon Springs. The State Parks of Florida are the true wild places to be! Finding a State Park is easy, once searching install the state park app so you are always only a click away. Although not mentioned above, Weeki Wachee Springs is a prodigious park with natural springs and a live mermaid show. All parks vary with their rules, the ones I chose to write about are personal favorites but all parks offer activities, playgrounds, beaches and trails. As with all our natural resources, take only pictures and leave only footprints! MAY 2014

WHAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU? Our Real Estate market has been up and down so when it comes to the decision between buying and renting most Millennials are still renting. Thinking about buying? Here are some things to consider before taking the plunge into home ownership. One of the first things to consider is how long you plan to live where you want to buy. Many young buyers are in career mode and should consider the fact that moving could be an advantage when moving up in your company. If you plan to stay where you are for 5 years or more it makes more sense to buy so that you can spread the cost of purchase over a longer period of time and build equity, especially in an appreciating market. This is also an advantage when you plan to sell because strong markets are good for sellers. Several recent reports show that boomers are more likely to give their children and/or grandchildren a down payment for their first home because they understand the value of home ownership and know they (the Millennials) cannot afford it because of the high level of debt they have due to school loans. This follows across all income levels and is good news for the millenniums that want to buy now, but don’t forget there is more to consider than just the mortgage. You will want to budget for taxes, insurance, utilities and the occasionally repair or replacement of appliances or other items that need work. You can set aside a specific dollar amount every month for maintenance so you are not caught without the funds to do the really important things like buying a refrigerator or hot water heater. Renting is easy in so many ways. Most rentals include at least some of utilities in the rent so your monthly payments don’t go up or down very much from month to month. Sure they can raise your rent but it is usually in small increments so you can budget for that. If the fridge or stove breaks down you just call the owner for repair or replacement. On the down side you cannot control who your neighbors are and if they are noisy, nosy, or just plain messy you just have to deal with it. If you have a pet it is difficult to find a place to rent that will allow your pet too. Buying makes you King or Queen of your castle. You can choose to paint, decorate or remodel without asking permission. Improvement increase your property value and if you decide it’s time to move you have some equity to take into your next purchase. Buying Real Estate is one of the best ways to build personal wealth. If your situation permits when you are ready to move up to a larger home or condo or if you just need a change of scenery for your personal space you can keep your property, lease it long term and use a home equity line of credit to invest in another property. This has long been a way for people to increase their personal wealth without taking big chances on the stock market or other more risky investments. Remember even if the property value drops during your ownership and you have a tenant in place they will continue to make your mortgage payments and the market will usually self correct over the long term. Just remember being a landlord can be a bit of a pain so make sure you are up for the task or if you need help you can afford to pay someone else to handle your rental(s). Fees are usually in the 10-12% range and it can be worth it for the peace of mind. A recent article in the March issue of Forbes magazine states that buying is overall 38% cheaper than renting in the long term. This varies from city to city but overall the advantage is to the buyer. Consider your plans for the future and what is important to you before you make the decision to buy. There is nothing quite as exciting as investing in your first home. There are classes and first time home buyers assistance programs available to everyone. Next month I’ll explore ways to get started. If you would like to discuss your Real Estate plans for the future just Call Amber today! | FL411 29 MAY 2014

he Grand Bahamas Islands is a wonderful destination location for relaxation and fun filled adventure! Dreaming of a perfect place for an engagement or the most romantic wedding? Yes this is the place! The beautiful backdrop of the white sand beaches, the breeze of warm gulfstream trade winds and clear turquoise waters is so inviting. The collection of wonderful 5 star resorts and incredible service will convince you this is the place to go for any vacation.
The History of the Bahamas is quite interesting to say the least. Dating back about 7,000 years the culture runs deep in the Islanders. The Seboney Indians and the Lucan tribes have carved out an existence on this remote island many years ago. They lived on the Island by fishing and working with shells and foliage to help build their lives. In 1492 the Spanish claimed the island and in 1670 the British claimed it. Many years passed and the island was invaded with the pirates making it their hiding place.

Captain Kidd, Blackbeard and Harry Morgan were among just a few of the well known pirates. The island has a park called Lucayan National Park where there are caverns and charted tunnels where they hid out and stowed their treasures. The difficulty of piloting the reefs made it perfect for the pirates to maneuver in and out and not be followed by other ships; in many cases when they were followed the ships sank thus making many shipwrecks in this area. This area is a dream dive for many divers and treasure hunters. The Island was also known for probation, rum running and slave trade in years to follow. When the American civil war happened lots of British fled to this island for safe haven from fighting. The southern confederacy was under a union blockage and embargo so a lot of the supplies were smuggled into the southern port of the United States only 55 miles away. The Grand Bahamas culture and beautiful island will make your vacation very special and it is so easy to get there. By air, you can leave Florida in the morning and be on the beaches that same morning. These Islands are so close you can also take a cruise ship, go by ferry or by private yacht. You can put this destination on your bucket list. You won’t regret it!

HOW TO:
WINEAFICIONADO
SLAP THE BAG We are classing things up this month with a fun game for you to play as you start your night!
First, the participants acquire a bag of wine, or boxed wine and remove the bag from the box. One participant holds the bag at their eye level, while another bends down or kneels in front of the spigot. Next, the bag-holder then opens the spigot while the drinker chugs as much of the wine as possible. Once they have reached their limit, they slap the side of the bag as forcefully as possible to indicate to the bag-holder that the spigot should be closed. The believed original object of the game was to attempt to slap the bag so hard that the person holding it (other team) would lose their grip and the bag would go sliding across the pavement. Each failed attempt of knocking the bag loose would be followed by taking a long drink directly from the spigot for how ever long seemed suitable. Another variation allows for the drinker to manage the spigot him/herself and slap the bag as a ceremonial finish. Then, the bag is passed on to the next participant, and the procedure repeats until either the players are done drinking or the wine is depleted. Another variation can involve timing the drinkers to see who can chug the wine the longest thus allowing there to be a ‘winner’. A different variation has also emerged, in which participants give the bag a ceremonial slap prior to drinking from the spigot. Said slapper then in turn holds the bag for the next participant. The process is repeated until the bag is finished or the participants’ intoxication has reached unmanageable levels.

WHATS HOT
Adidas Springblade ADIDAS Adidas’s latest running shoe will literally put a spring in your step. The idea is that the ‘blades’ dampen the force of your foot striking the ground, storing some of that kinetic energy in the bent plastic. As you lift your foot the springy blades straighten out, releasing that potential energy to propel you forwards. The effect is similar to that generated by the carbon fibre running blades that paralympian sprinters use
Dash earphones BRAGI Between Twitter-enabled kettles and internet-connected wigs there are some gadgets that don’t really deserve the ‘smart’ moniker. The Dash, on the other hand, really is a pair of smart earphones. They function as a Bluetooth headset, a USB memory stick, fitness tracker, heart rate monitor and sports watch. They even let you channel some of the ambient noise through your mic, so you can hear what’s going on around you.
YotaPhone 2 YOTAPHONE
Most current smartphones tend to last less than a full day once you start actually using them. In a bid to eke out energy, the YotaPhone 2 lets you transfer anything you’d view on the powerhungry front colour screen to the more frugal e-ink screen on the back. By doing so you can flick through emails, read a book or get updates from your favourite website without sapping your battery entirely. MAY 2014

MOTHERSDAY
is on
MAY11 We wanted to find out what local Mom’s out there are feeling come mothers day. So we found a couple in the area that could shed some light on what it means to be a Mom and what kind of a day they would like to have. The answers might shock you or they may just make your heart melt!
FL411: What is your favorite part about being a mom? NIKOLE: Loving someone more than yourself. FL411: Tell us about your little nugget! NIKOLE: An artistic, unique, kind hearted blessing that touches the life of everyone he meets. He has an old soul, with eyes that look right into you. Beautiful blonde hair, an angel face, with a spirit that can change the world. FL411: What is your favorite memory so far? NIKOLE: Everytime he runs up and says ‘I love you!’ So I say ‘I love you too!’ And he replies ‘no! I love you more!’ Phenomenal!!! FL411: What are you going to be doing this mothers day? NIKOLE: Anything that makes my child happy. So most likely, playing on the beach, practicing our skim boarding skills....followed by jamming on his guitar on our deck, watching the boats ‘sleep’ (docked) on the bay FL411: What would your DREAM DAY be like for mothers day? NIKOLE: Taking Ayden back home to Missouri to see my family, particularly my grandma pipes. I asked Ayden...he said, ‘go on a boat.’ FL411: What is your best memory you have with your own mom? NIKOLE: Anything with my grandmother, because she was the driving maternal force in my life. FL411: Anything you want to say to our readers about being a mom on mothers day? NIKOLE: Appreciate every moment. These children are here to remind us of the true meaning of life. Taking us back to the basics of;
Don’t sweat the small stuff, Laugh often, Love much, And LIVE daily. 38

Stephanie
FL411: So you’re a mommy, tell us about the little ones! STEPHANIE: I have a 6 year old daughter named Rylee who is the most amazingly beautiful girl. She has such an outgoing personality and would never shy away from a camera or refrain from making a goofy face. She’s my little graceful butterfly whose kind, loving and has a beautiful caring heart. She is always there to help her family especially when it comes to being the big sister to her two year old brother named Talon. He’s my little Toad and is the epitome of the definition that follows boy. He loves dirtbikes, monster trucks, trains and his bicycle. He also loves to make anyone or anything a jungle gym. However, at the end of the day he loves to just settle in and nestle up and cuddle with his family. FL411: Is there anything this May that you really hope you get, as in a present? STEPHANIE: The only thing I would ever want for Mother’s Day is just to spend time with my littles and make them happy. Their laughing and smiling faces is present enough for me. FL411: What about your perfect mothers day...can you tell us some things that will make you smile? STEPHANIE: Perfect Mother’s Day would consist of waking up with my babies, having a nice nutritious breakfast and spending the day somewhere fun like Aquatica, Busch Gardens or even somewhere small like Celebration Station. We would then have an early dinner and possibly head over to Clearwater Beach to watch the sunset and walk around. Why not let the kids run in the water in their clothes, roll in sand and then climb into my car, lol!! These adventures make life fun. FL411: What is something that you and your mom did that is a great memory? STEPHANIE: I have had so many great days with my mom that it would be hard to choose just one. I’m a lucky daughter to have such a wonderful mother who has been so encouraging, loving, supportive and selfless. She is always there for me and my children in good times and bad. She is my best friend and I love her more than words can say. If I had to choose one memory that I can say is great, it would be us recently taking my two little kiddos to SeaWorld. It was Rylee’s second trip but Talon’s first to an amusement park. He was so excited. We had a blast walking around, going on rides and watching the shows. It was definitely a beautiful day!
FL411: Do you have any advice as a mom for all those single parents out there reading this? STEPHANIE: Well given that I’m a newly single mother, I probably could take more advice then actually giving it. One thing I can say is that no matter what the situation or the cause of a person being single they need to remind themselves that the kids come first no matter what! Try your hardest to communicate with the other parent as best as you can and never fight in front of the children. It is hard enough for these babies to deal with the changes in their life so seeing mommy and daddy happy is the key. Keep the disagreements behind closed doors and spend every waking moment possible with the little miracles you have created together. FL411: You gave us a pic with your sisters, tell us about them! STEPHANIE: In the picture, the lovely lady sitting in the middle is my sister Nicole. She is a mother of a stunning 3 year old beauty named Ava Capri or who I refer to as Capri Pants! She is an awesome mother and sister who loves spending time with her daughter as well as traveling up to the woods of Weeki Wachee to spend the weekends with me and my two crazies. I would love her to the moon and back “if” it existed, lol!! She will only understand what I just said because we have a ridiculous amount of inside jokes that only we laugh it. People may say we’re a tiny bit off our rockers but definitely adventurous and fun. I’m blessed to have built this amazing bond with her. The prettiness to the far left is my sister-in-law Erin. She is a great mother to two superhero loving boys. Varik is 7 and Alaric is 2. They are the coolest little boys ever and I love and miss them so much. With my brother being in the military they are all stationed in Georgia and visiting could never be as much as I would want it to be. Speaking of military life and referring back to my sis Erin, all I can say is she has the strongest and most solid internal strength I’ve personally seen in a woman. This lady has held the fort down while my brother has been on 3 seperate year long tours over seas to Afganistan and Iraq and is presently awaiting to make his fourth. Erin would be considered the trophy wife and mother for when it comes to military families. She is a phenomenal woman and my brother was lucky to have found her. FL411: Any plans for the big day? STEPHANIE: I don’t have any plans set as of yet. I’m just hoping to have a wonderful Sunday with my two goofballs and make some memories :)

WHO’SHOT
NICK MACASI FL411: Have you been in Florida long? Nick: In Florida yes, I have worked up at Panama City Beach quite a bit but am pretty new to Tampa. FL411: What do you do for fun here? Nick: I have quite a few friends and family here in town so that is always a good time. But I can’t go wrong with the amazing beaches and the nightlife here is a lot of fun. FL411: We saw you up at Hogans Beach, where else do you like to hang out? Nick: The Lodge, mainly because of the trifecta of awesome; good drinks, great people and amazing scenery! I also like Drynk 3-D because of the music and atmosphere specifically. It’s brand new and I love the 19ft tall media screen they use! The renovations in the back room and insane! You have to check it out.
AMANDA WADE
FL411: Hi Amanda, tell me something about yourself! Amanda: 21 years old and I am an Aries Baby! I am from NC and I have traveled quite a bit due to my dad being in the military. FL411: What kind of things are you into? Amanda: I would like to become a Hula Hoop instructor someday and I would like to do some mission work for Group Hula for Happiness. FL411: What kind of serious goals have you made? Amanda: I am studying Architecture as designing homes is a passion of mine. I love the little details, which is why I enjoy the art of hooping - it’s the little details that make things so beautiful!
FL411: What do you do other than have fun? Nick: I do Public Relations for many bars/clubs across the entire state. Basically I get to have an awesome time and put people together to make money! Having a business degree also helps.
FL411: Where can people find you around town? Amanda: I love Bikini Laser Tag because there’s a lot of DJ’s and when I have the time, I like to spin fire. Yes, spin fire!
FL411: Anything off the wall about you? Nick: I am a farm boy actually. I grew up on a tobacco farm!
FL411: What is one thing you would like to tell our readers? Amanda: I love Hula Hooping, drawing, singing and animals! MAY 2014
