CHAPTER ONE CONCERNING THE USE AND NECESSITY OF SMELTING

The method most generally used for separating Metals from the Earth and Stones with which they are begotten, in order to reduce them to their due Purity and Perfection, and the method (at the same time) most appropriate and in conformity with their N ature, is by means of Fire, in ovens, which when used for this purpose are called smelting furnaces. This was practised. in the World from the beginning of the knowledge and use of Metals, until the treatment of ores by amalgamat ion was discovered and put into practice in this Imperial Village of PotosĂ­, the most famous and richest of the finds of this N ew Century and N ew W orld. And, although, as has been said in previous treatises, all the ores of Gold and Silver may be amalgamat ed, for many of them smelting is necessary, and for the very rich it is more suitable; and it is thus that its use in this Village, and in other mining Districts of the Kingdom, has never been interrupted . The base metals must necessarily be treated by fire, and by it all may be perfected. Vain will be the 185
