old tow n
t o w n
The project will works as a vending machine and will develop through two industrial shelving units that become part of the furniture, vertical communications and building services. Moreover one of these shelves appears at the public space of the market. The building is embedded in the wall of the market. This is why the way zenital light enters the building is important for the interior volumes and the paving of the square.

The project in this area consist of:
1
. Large warehouse and distribution centre for the market and its area.
2
Distribution of car parks and numbers of car spaces in the Old Town and in the other neighbourhouds. Difficulties that the Old Town traders have in loading, unloading and storing their goods. Furthermore, they feel that they are outside the consumer chain that is better developed in other parts of the city. Lack of car parks.
Distribution of population in Santiago. In spite the problems for living in the Old Town it continues being one of the most populated neighbourshoods (12.000 inhabitants) in the city at the same tiem of the New Town.
. Supermarket that will improve the non-perishable goods offer.
Lack of facilities for everyday shopping in the Old Town. Moreover, the shops are just for tourists, so the residents must go to other neighbourhoods. The Ring Road is the street thar surrounds the Old Town and is the axis that my proposal will lead.
Distribution of shopping areas in Santiago. On the left they are described the most important commercial streets in the Old and in the New Town and the type of shop. On the right they are described the where are the new shopping malls in the outskirts and the type of shop.

Among these 5 new elements, the one that I chose to develop is the one located in the Plaza de Abastos: the Old Town market. As other traditional markets in Europe, the Plaza de Abastos is being abandoned and when it is closed, the public area at the surrounds becomes in an uncomfortable space. Preserve the building and the main trade activity including new uses in order to complement the business: 24 hour occupancy of the building beyond the normal trading hours and to include leisure activities
