A DAY IN A LIFE OF YOU

8.

MORNING. As I wake up by the sun rays touches my face and the thick wall from the left side of steel frame roof window giving the heavy shadow mixed with dim light. I heard the bird singing welcoming a new day. On the right side of the bed, there is a small rectangular wood table where I always check my phone every morning. I get of the bed with semi-concious condition my feet meets the soft brown carpet while trying to reach to open the reddish curtain behind my working desk. Cupboard on the left side of the bed where I store all the books, snacks, and, drawing tools. I grab my laptop on the right side of my bed and begin to write my task. As my laptop sits on my lap the sunlight dance with clouds giving movements for the shadows. Sometimes I heard cars moving and people working on construction in front of the window. While I’m working with my laptops sometimes I grab some cream crackers from tiny plastic dark brown wood wood grain and texture. At 9:30am I closed my laptop tidy up my bed and prepare to go to the morning lecture. After finish preparing everything I open the door to go, while I walk I hear a squeaking sound from the door being gently closed.

AFTERNOON. After I finish my lecture I come back to room again open the cold stainless steel door knob. my nose smell a hint of parfume mixed with the room scent fromn the wood wardrobe, desk, and carpet. Sit edge of the wall beside wood finish door. I can feel a slight changes of temperature from my room when I change my clothes. I spare my little time to lay down while day dreaming on the bed that has a creaking sound while thingking for what to do next. After that moment I grasp my Ipad on the slowly devour the sunlight the space becomes daarker, shadow becomes heavier. On 6:48 I rise form my bed to prepare my diner.

NIGHT. Continue working on my light brown desk I sit in this cold crooked chair watching the city folds with shadow. The space is now illuminated by the yellowish artificial. Phones on the lweft side of laptop occasionally beeping with my headphones on. A foot step and a door shut seldom hear echoing below. The cold air blow my feet gently when I almost finish my work. When work finish I reach my pen and sketchbook filling the void with all kind of immagination spilling from my mind, then I rest my head to the pillow as I stare to the peculiar ceiling comapnied bt shadow hiding behind it. Hand reach the lamp button. Eyes are shut. Ready to dream until tommorow comes.

HOUSING TYPOLOGY

DONNYBROOK QUARTER STUDIO GROUP A, TYPOLOGY 4.

Donnybrook Quarter is a low rise, high density street based city quarter located on a prominent corner site just south of Victoria Park in Hackney. The scheme is laid out around two new tree lined streets which cross the site creating very strong spatial connections with adjacent neighborhoods and a handy cut through for their residents. The streets have an intimate scale being 7.5m wide and bordered on each side by two and three storey buildings. At their intersection, at the heart of the scheme, the two streets broaden out into a delightful tree lined square. Throughout the project public space is heavily overlooked by the residents on either side. Balconies and oriel windows overhang the street, terraces and the numerous front doors create a sense of ownership and the opportunity for personalisation (pots, deck chairs, hanging baskets) The project was commissioned by Circle 33 Housing Trust in 2003, after it was selected as winner of the Architecture Foundations' high profile 'Innovations in Housing Competition' from 150 entries worldwide. It was handed over to residents on January 2006 .

DONNYBROOK QUARTER

DONNYBROOK QUARTER

PROGRAMME The donnybrook quarter site is densely packed with 40 housing units on the tight plot, Peter Barber has socially counteracted this by creating a public void on the central proportion of the site. As well as the fact that each property’s outside space is generally limited, this creates a space where residents can pass by and interact with each other with the large amount of space which is offered. This central part of Eden Way is made even more functional with the addition of benches for seating and further greenery to give a better feeling and experience which encourages the use of this main element. The open layout of Donnybrook quarter means that is a common cut through route for pedestrians in the area, this allows interaction between neighbouring housing estates. Donnnybrook quarter also contains shops and ammenities which is unique in comparison to the large sum of neighbourhood dwellings. The roads surrounding the complex are very busy and popular main roads, as the quarter is pedestrianised a calming and serene atmosphere is created in contrast to the main street. This contrast promotes the architect’s intention to appreciate the ‘public social life of the street.’ The complex is designed using two pedestrianised streets leading to the main ‘heart’ of the complex where the two paths cross. It use a very soft boundaries usch as trees that separate between street within the resindence and the house , becaus of the gesture that the architect provide many people who live there tend to decorate their front doors and windows. This notion explain that the idea of architecture and cities being animated by the activity of their occupants and architecture being nothing until the people have overlaid their lives onto it. The image above shows the diagram of microcosm of Donnybrook quarter, it explain the connection of the facade to the street such as Balconies overhang the streets, bay windows create strong visual connections with the street and also act like little display cabinets. When you go back there are flower arrangements in windows, teddvies that gives personalisation of the facade. That clearly express the Walter Benjamin idea.

SPATIAL CONFIGURATION The buildings consist of a two-bedroom flat on the ground floor, above is located two maisonettes with access from the courtyard garden. This design allows high density housing in a small area. One hundred and thirty people inhabit the forty housing units, twenty-five percent of them being provided as affordable housing. The spatial configuration of Donnybrook quarter clearly aims to promote a sense of community both within the complex, and with surrounding neighbourhoods. Within the room layouts this is demonstrated by the external features such as the courtyards and balconies, and internally by the ‘back of pavement terrace’ meaning that the front door opens directly into living room / kitchen.

MASTER PLANNING As Leith has been overwhelmed with years of gentrification and change which has had an impact on their community and overall living, this project wanted to revive this social involvement with the community-based workshop to build rafts, the central events seating and the smaller workshops inside the shipping containers which will be the source of money through the events that can revive social realtionship in wider urban context and source of profit for the economy

CONTEXT AND PROGRAMME The proposed master planning is across the dry dock site. within the site there is a high working population so this proposal provide a facility for people to have a recreation to do something out from the busy everyday life. The job is dominate by design base industry this can be used as an opportunity for creative people to build and create and event for wider urban context to enjoy. Surrounded by the commercial and housing the design can be easily access by walking distance. it is also located in the secondary heart of bussiness after Newhaven and port of leith with their famous Royal Britannia Yacht can attract more people to come and experience Leith.

In this project The main philosophy of the design is to create a housing for people who live in Leith. Othe objectives is to incorporate urban farming that compliment the housing. Through carefull thinking in design process, the goal of this project is achive a house that can liven the atmosphere in leith. located in the long strip of grass with river view it becomes the new opportunity for people to interact with the site. Through analyzing the site, Leith has many design and art base job, that makes this site become a good place to work for young proffesionals. Because the design is focusing on the social aspect, a set of social analysis from Van Eyck and Jan Gehl are the main precedents and also carefully think on form of design can influence, enhance social unconciously.

The pedestrian street on the dry dock si quite wide and bright making a good opportunity to attract more people. This kind of opportuniy is there but not visible due to rapid highrise housing development restrict people interaction making the site is to cold in social aspect. Job population in Leith is dominate by design and art industry, more than a hundred company in leith are based on design industry. Due to rapid housing and design indusrty many people outside Leith come here to work and live temporarly in the site, but some of them choose to live there and have a family resulitng rapid increasing in family type population.

GRADIENT OF INTIMATION Dwelling + is a housing project located in Leith, Edinburgh with its rich social, maritime, insdustrial and transport history. Currently Leith transform from maritime insdustrial to housing and design industry. In a city with increasing young proffesionals population who work and live here making a rapid housing property growth. Due to a constant development of high rise housing , the social interaction in the site keeps decreasing. This project proposes a housing project that gives social regeneration and urban farming community that instills a new and healthy way of living. The diagram above explained the density of intimation between people arround the street. The river is the most highly populated by pedestrian, when it is far away from the river the intimation between people are less dense and more populated by vehicle. I also strive to study the social and community within the site and significant places around the site by layering all the activity and community, and history, that later become part of my design

34.

DWELLING +

The collage explained the layer of social geography of the site (Economy, culture, and community) separated into their own zones that can be enhance through festival.

PROGRAMME This project is for young proffesionals and family. This 3 storeys high building is a perfect distance for vertical interaction. The tiered terrace on the front both act as facility to interact to neighbors, people outside and also act as privacy and surveilance. On the ground floor all unit is a private housing for four people family with a garden at the front and back for them to grow. Second and third floor on the left side is single private housing for couple and young proffesionals, on the right side is three bedroom housing for young proffesionals and couple with additional shared spaces such as kitchen, laundry room, dining room, and an outdoor garden with view to the river. Communal urban farming is provided in the middle of the housing with community workshop for public ensuring strong social relationship between neighboors and urban context. For urban landscaping rather than static scene of scenery garden, plazza is a perfect solution to make the site become mvore seducing for people to come both wall in behind replaced by small steps to provide more social circulation an also as time goes it can merge the landscape with the adjacent parking area. The storage room on the ground floor is used to store tent for food festival and healty community dining in urban farming this plazza ensuring a strong volumetric relationship to the smaller scale single-family residences in the property and the larger commercial area, inviting a warm social space throughout the building form a network of healthy community connections that support residents within the building and build social connections to the city beyond.

35.

DWELLING +

36.

DWELLING +

PROCESS The design is based on modular type building in a series of cube diagram striving to achieve a house that has a strong social relationship between the outside and inside. first attempt of design the building shape is in straight line making it very intimidating to the adjacent building and also the postion of the design itself is not inviting at all. The outside stair is very big and unprotected as in Scotland is very cold and rainy, making it not comfortable, because it takes more time for people to enter the house. By moving one part of the building to the back and change the positioning of the building it siginificantly change the spatial relationship between the private and urban connections creating an inviting housing for public and also good privacy.

MATERIAL White painted brick is used fo rthis housing and copper finish steel structure for urban farming. The brick materials represent a transformation from old insdustrial era to modern design era. The scaffolding responds as a harpoon gun at the shore for whaling that becomes the core industry back then, connecting the contemporary icon with a historic monument through its construction referencing the reconstruction that the city has experienced. For Urban landscaping local grey stone gneiss is used, because of its unique characteristic in wet and dry condition. In dry condition the stone has nice contrast between the existing gobble stone. In wet condition the material amplify the color vividness change the space atmosphere completely and it also has the same colour with the river. It feels like the house floating on the river when it rains. The wall on the front of the river is blue stone with azul bahia finished gives a nice contrast with the greystone and the feature as a molding people gesture become one of the key interest of the landscape Through a series of material research, this housing is made from white painted bricks, because the site is surrounded by tall building white painted bricks suit the building because of its refelective character eventhough white tile bricks look more reflective but its character is like a mirror, when the site it s dark the tile brick also dark, but not for white painted brick. Scaffolding structure is used because its thin so it does not take many space and also strong enough to load the urban farming.

ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE

ENGENEERING EXPERIENCE

Engineering Experience Moon - Duncan Jones Group Fii Construction of identity through space in the scene starting in 00:32:28 to 00:41:08. As Sam confronts his Doppelganger, the sequence plays on the different ways each character appropriates space. Each has a slightly different personality – one irascible, the other more contemplative – which is played out in how they interact, adapt and use spaces around the recreation room.

66.

ENGENEERING EXPERIENCE

Our focus to begin with was on spatial qualities and interactions within a space. Our ideas were tangible and not really heading anywhere. Through model I were exploring projections and distortions to create an atmosphere and to produce interesting interactions between objects and the figure. The idea is very vague resulting no narrative or true focus

67.

ENGENEERING EXPERIENCE

68.

To emphasize the isolation we filmed in a small clinical space and allowed sounds to echo. We placed a chair in the scene but didn’t use it. This was to exaggerate the loneliness and to create a sense of things being slightly confused and out of place, like in our given scene where there is a ping pong table in the scene which is a two player game, but only one person resides in the space. We use a basketball as the intermediary, which allows for the interaction between the two clones. The basketball is also a representative of Gerty, who in the film sympathises with the two Sams and shows emotion in a way you would not expect from a robot. To emphasize the emotions of the two clones and the difference in state of mind between the one who has been in space for three years and the one who is only just experiencing it, I produced some maquettes that reflected this; through a closed in space around the head - emphasizing the isolation of being alone for three year - and through an open box that hadn’t yet begun to create that isolated feeling.

69.

From the beginning, we were exploring a way to make our project into a potentially interactive experience. We explored the idea of Gerty effectively being the one telling our narrative. The narrative of our film became a projection of Gerty’s thoughts, feelings and memories. We explore the interaction of the two clones through the interaction with Gerty. I came up with the idea of creating an installation, which showed our film through Gerty. I did this by making a periscope looking into the mind of Gerty where an ipad would be playing our film and the periscope represent the sense of isolation and the length symbolize a window to look at the earth far away from moon.

70.

ENGENEERING EXPERIENCE

72.

ENGENEERING EXPERIENCE

REFLECTION At the beginning of the project I felt a slight confusion and excitement of the project, because it is strange and new for me to make an installation from a movie. I also felt curious to learn new skills and creative thinking in this project, hence it is interesting and relatively challenging, it enhance me to interpret, understand, and feel a movie to recreate it as a model for installation that reflect and tells the meaning and concept of particular scene within the movie. In collaboration process, it is unexpectedly pleasing to interact and share ideas with the engineer, because I thought engineer is believes in static and stability in contrast architect is about movement and aesthetic. We complement each other to combine art and engineer. The group did not work quite well at the start of the project. We are very quiet and sometimes one or two people missing. Hence lack of communication, we split our group again into two, one group focusing in film making and I focusing in designing the installation. We tried to do that and I realize is not going to work, because the idea between the film and installation keeps colliding each other, resulting lack of relationship between the concept of the installation design and the film. So I initiatively strive to encourage all the group members constantly asked and manage to organize a meeting all together as much as possible. At the end we can manage to work together. I also contributed to share ideas in film making and we discuss and experiment to relate and represent the film through my installation design. In conclusion we slightly change some of our concept and manage to connect both aspects.

73.

APOLOGIA

74.

For this project my personal objective is to challange myself to approach my work using materials that I have never tried which is plastic. I choose bioplastic as my specific material protagonist by studying on bioplastic characteristics, and also peotics of it. I also studied on how to layout an public building which I never learn before. The bigest advantage of this project is learning the material itself, because it is a new material and not many buildings using plastic. My design approach in this project understansding the film making and design can compliment each other. I made a ‘dream theatre’ atmosphere for my building where the space frame becomes a part of lighting construction in theatre and the facade become my stage background.

EXPLORING EXPERIENCE

EXPLORING EXPERIENCE

site analysis PLASTIC

Greatly characterised as a liminal zone between Scotland and England, Berwick-upon-Tweed is a town with a long history the layers of which create a very interesting palimpsest of stories of materiality and making. The topography of this narrow coastal plain is penetrated by rivers (including Tweed) and is underlain by sedimentary rocks of limestones, shales and sandstones that are concealed in the inland by glacial boulder clay. Sandstone travels through the town as a key building material along with pantiles and brick (earlier construction periods) made from local clay deposits. Rock formations wrap around the area from Pier Road to Magdalen Fields and cliffs are also visible at low tide. The industrial history of the town contributes to this with the cooper industry, the grain trade and iron manufacturing flourishing during the 18th and 19th century. In parallel, the Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival, has been celebrating arts and film for more than 10 years now aiming to “develop new territories in which to flex our emotional and intellectual muscles”. The theme is different each year, proposing a sense of fluidity that can greatly inform the projects. The stability of its annual repetition is combined with the change of the theme into a dynamic aspect of a multi-purpose building for an art practice, because the site is very near The Maltings my program is to enhance the opportunity of film making and digital art for berwick art festival in scale aspect, as the maltings is the big cinema and my building is the ‘mini theatre’ by incorporating recyled plastic miniature as a new tool to explore film making and also giving chances for people who live in berwick to learn film making, hence giving the site a new place for meeting place and socialize . What I also find within the site, the space is very dense giving no prospect for the building. So to solve this problem is by making my own view within the building and also giving view for nearest building, by using changable costum painted bioplastic facade panels that can change annually following the theme from Berwick Art Festival.

CONCEPT Stitchpad building within the site become the starting point of my design idea. I interested in the layer of material history as shown in the site pictures two contrast of material build from different time. My building following the same languange, using giant plastic cube covering an arches concrete. The thin sheets of bioplastic facade panel representing a material from future in contrast a solid, thick concrete wall and arches representing the material of old. The timeline diagram on the left side explained my concept of time and history where the old one replaced with the new one.

81.

82.

MATERIAL POETICS In this project I choose bioplastic, because of the unique characteristics of bioplastic that can rot which gives a changing color of light each year and also the translucency of bioplastic resulting a colourfull diffuse lights that gives a sense of dreaming experience where the light and shadow are hard to define combine with cast concrete make the reflection from bioplastic, makes the concrete has interesting play of vivid colours.

83.

84.

PROGRAMME The main purpose of the building is to increase awereness of plastic consumption, education centre, and meeting space. There are 2 artists who live permanently as an professional film model maker who also teach visitors in digital film making and model making, and the other 2 artist as an experimental bioplastic painter, who create and experiment with the facade panel. The building also has a small scale recycle plastic factory gathered from nearest area to become the main source of material to make miniatures and small furniture that later can be exhibit and sell in shop. To further reduce plastic waste, I create recycled plastic coins as a ‘new currency’ that can be used to get discounts from collaborated local businesses. In every households of berwick they get blue bags to fill with unwanted plastic, when they hand them in for recyling they receive blue plastic coins in returns. The building also provide a large multipurpose space in ground floor. In summer the building become a giant ‘cabinet of curiosity’ where all people who lived in berwick can study to make miniature and film making preparing for Berwick Art and Film festival. In Winter it it change to become a food fair and culture fair for people to gather in winter.

CRANE PERSPECTIVE DRAWING

CRANE ROUTE PLAN AND CRANE MOVEMENT

CONSTRUCTION DETAIL The crane can move move freely on the rail provided on the space frame above. Using Vitrocsa technology the wheel can turn in 90° corner. Hydraulic system to move the arm. For the facade panels are using steel clips that move like gils to attach the panels from the crane from the bottom part first to clip the panel bottom part, left and right for second clip and top after the crane release the panel. For the roof construction is using space frame attach to 50cm thick reinforced concrete to hold roof and facade which I can achive a very thin strips of steel panels resulting a clean facade to show the bioplastic painting without any obstruction from large steel beam frame.
