AD2.1 Obstruction : dereliction and the subtle reclaim of a broken city - Jubal green

Obstruction

brief Architecture of the modern city often falls into a state of trends and fashions that leave the wider context to fragment into history. An alternative way of designing would be through subtle changes to the often forgotten context. This would create a longuage of organic and indevidual design. the language could then be adopted over time with new buildings and cities to create a subtle archetype.

Site history: The area of Eastgate has changed a lot over time. The once prosperous district was filled with factories that helped propel Leeds into its current state. However this changed when the inner city ring road was built in the late1960’s, unknowingly cutting off the area and leaving it to dereliction. Many of the factories that stood have been demolished and replaced by car parks. New development plans have been made to demolish the remaining buildings and try and reconfigure the surroundings. The site as it can be seen today will only remain for another eight years. projected build of site

As I explored the site I found overriding sense of dereliction. In particular the covering of the buildings and the damage left to decay. This area however is still used, still inhabited and holds potential.

The common factor :

I then focused on one common factor that affected the buildings in the area. The Lyons Works building Is an old building set to be demolished, but had OSB coverings.

response

Homogeneous covering creates informed new majority of mass to building.

The implied geometry is still represented through the opposing matirial.

Fragmented beauty can be glimpsed through the coverings

This response represents the idea of somthing of history and art, being hidden. The interesting factors of this model is the implied geometry and the object identification using fragmented elements.

Applications to the site

The site is covered in Osb and informs a structure that makes its way through all the buildings.

Applications to the site

the osb implies a larger structure that continues until it hits the vanishing point.

giving these shapes a mass makes it seem aplicable to whole area. a structure of the area that runs through the whole site. the Oriented strand board (osb) on the extirior implies a hidden geometry.

cutting away into the mass leaves the intirior as the form. leaving the extirior to cover and hide the dimentions.

Sketch development:

I explored with the idea of hidden pockets of light and structure that revealed by the hidden dimentions.

time capsual

Many warehouses become derelicet and exposed to the elements, and the building itself has seen the environment around it decay grow and change. However dispite the changing extirior, the interior remains as a capsule of the past. The structure acts as a camera itself and retains that information to be discovered again.

The obscura:

The obscura takes in the surroundings and captures them within the chamber. This is similar to the Lyons building surroundings altering and leaving parts behind.

required spaces

The facade is pushed and pulled to bring out a new intirior form

3m

3.5m The ideal height for a photographic studio is 3m, by cutting through the floor planes I can use the full hidden dimetions of the building.

Use of OSB for a possitive outcome:

Stealth Barn by Carl Turner Architects uses osb for the warm textures it creates, the formulated board can be made into huge sheets. This makes the lines of the roof clean. The contrast of new material and deprecated surroundings work well, and the light within the building portays the warm attributes.

Final model

The Views in the model show hidden spaces that lead to the darkroom below.

The Osb is angled to let light in and capturing the surroundings.

OSB variations and elements to be applied to the full building:

sketches

The osb here acts as a shutter and transfers between condemmed and open depending on the angle of view.

model development

The OSB here lets the light slip through, signifying signs of life within.

Here the OSB is used to express a different idea of condemed deraliction. The OSB being outside the building leads us to believe the OSB is protecting the building under constrution.

Lightwells sink in from the roof, and with the OSB the light is spread evenly across the different people.

The OSB crossing the front of the building gives a subtle expression of change within the building and around it.

The models made made up elements of the OSB running thoughout the building and with this in particular, the osb creats an illusion, and opens the building out to the public gradually.
