solution To combine elements from popular culture and the contemporary world to create designs in Autocad that can be viewed from different angles.
air mags 90 This shoe is designed to commemorate both the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future and Kobe Bryant’s retirement from the NBA. I took elements from several Nike shoes such as the Kobe Elites, Air Max 90s, Roshes, and Marty Mcfly’s Nike Air Mags sneakers as inspiration in creating these shoes.
concept car This car is designed with the Homer-mobile from The Simpsons and the DeLorean from Back to the Future in mind. I wanted to synthesize these two ideas of futuristic mobility with my own twist. I designed the car to be both blocky and streamlined at the same time to retain the paradoxical theme of retrosuperfuture to the car.
KOBE AIR MAGS 90
habitat is everywhere challenge Design presentation assets for a landscape proposal for the UC Riverside Chancellor’s mansion. A group of six landscape engineers and six graphic designers must work together to present their approach of maximizing habitat.
constraints Must collaborate with people in a non-related field and come up with presentation material that can be understood by experts and non-experts alike.
solution Design a book and brochure to help guide the council in their decision. The book and brochure are designed in conjunction with all engineers and some input from the other designers.
book design This book was designed mainly by me and Brendan Jackson. Both of us did half of the typographical and layout treatments for the book and edited each other’s spreads. The book is thematically connected through the use of color and certain gimmicks such as replacing all the ands with orange crosses (x).
brochure This brochure was designed as a guide for the main presentation. It contains a map of our groups plan for the redesign of the mansion. It also contains tips for a smaller scale plan that one can accomplish in their own home or garden.
visual appropriation challenge Create a campaign to increase awareness of visual appropriation and copyright laws in general. This topic is often misunderstood because the it is very confusing and most cannot even define it.
constraints Everything must be accomplished within the span of five weeks. Cannot appropriate images in any of the work. Have a clear opinion on visual appropriation.
solution I decided from the start that I will be using guerilla tactic to help me spread my message on visual appropriation. These items can be dropped off and leave a lasting impact.
reminder cards These cards were designed similar to those of Catholic prayer cards which contains info about the church it comes from and several verses from the Bible. My version has info on visual appropriation and copyright laws. It leads one to a better understanding of the topic and to my website where related comics are published.
visual conversation During the course of this project, I was having a purely visual conversation with one of my friends, Franco, about visual appropriation. We communicated without language and presented our conversation in a medium that we deem appropriate. I chose that of a political flyer, similar to Bernie vs. Hillary, in which they display their own opinions on various subjects.
comic tracts These comics are designed to assimilate with “Chick Tracts� that are in counters everywhere ranging from churches to taco pubs. These comics have a similar preachy tone and cartoon style, but differs in its message. Chick tracts are mostly associated with Christian beliefs, while mine are associated with my beliefs regarding visual appropriaion. There is a link and QR code in the back of these books to an online publication.
italian festival dtla challenge Promote a cultural festival in Los Angeles with a variety of promotional products and packages. Have a thematic approach or a mascot for the event.
constraints Focus on Italian culture, while maintaining that Los Angeles vibe since it is an LA event. All products must have a pervading theme throughout.
solution Use Michelangelo’s David as a mascot because of his iconic Italian connection. His hand gesture will be the biggest thematic approach because of its communicative effect.
poster and packages The poster was designed to promote the festival using its main mascot, David. The packages were designed as a combo to be sold and enjoyed together. With all these one can puff on a fine cigar, while they eat a canoli and sip cappucino.
brochure The brochures were designed to lead festival attenders to a variety of places they can visit during the event. There is information inside that lists the events going on and food being sold. The brochure also doubles as a souvenir. Once the festival is over, one can unfold the whole brochure to reveal a poster behind that reveals the meaning of Italian hand gestures.
cal poly pomona challenge Create a calendar and posters featuring iconic Cal Poly Pomona architecture and animals. All assets must be thematically in sync and follow CPP’s graphic standards.
constraints All images used must be related and/or taken at Cal Poly Pomona. Use of color and type must comply with CPP’s graphic standards manual.
solution I spent a week going around campus taking various photos. Then came up with a stylistic approach in unifying several images together in a calendar and several posters.
calendar The calendar’s images were handpicked from a set of 500 photos that I took during the duration of a week at Cal Poly Pomona. The stylistic approach I took was to extract the textures of the images and reapply them on several layers. The typographical treatment is derived from existing and implied lines.
posters This poster series is inspired by Cal Poly Pomona’s architecture. The photographs used were given a similar stylistic treatment as the calendars. The typographical approach varies from poster to poster in its dominance by comparing the scale of the text and the image.
animal photography challenge Photograph animals in a variety of compositions. Take risks in photographing intriguing subjects and settings.
constraints Use manual camera settings. Take all photographs in natural lighting if possible.
solution I went around my city, park, pet stores, and campus to find animals and create interesting compositions.
