P R E FA C E The studio is structured as introduction to urban design representation and how it is used as a means of design thinking. The premise is that urban design is best understood and expressed through study and representation of the built urban environment. Hence the studio will focus on the study and representation of the key urban elements in cities and will be structured in multiple modules running through the semester, each culminating with an exhibition of the outcome. These modules will significantly focus on effectively capturing and communicating the spatial qualities of the urban built environment. Module 1 will involve perceiving and representation of the key elements of urban design. The premise is that building types, urban blocks, streets and public open spaces form the key elements that come together to make any functional urban space. The exercises in this module will enable student with methods to study each element and how they contribute to the scale, form, character and their relationship with the larger urban context. Module 2 will be the final exercise which will involve design of public places The learning outcome of the studio are: to prepare design drawings to graphically communicate the key spatial characteristics of an existing urban built environment with focus on its elements and prepare a design for a given urban area in the form of a framework plan, design analysis and 3-dimentional illustration to represent the design. As a student specifically in the moduel-1 the focus was more towards exploring the informality in the Indian public realms. Rajasthan was taken up as a focused region to explore some of these examples related to the focused area like Ghnata Ghar of Jodhpur and market streets from the Udaipur and Jaipur.

Elements of Urban Design : Building Typologies

The exercise is designed to develop method of efficiently capturing various attributes of the built form based on the various typologies and its relationship with the context and ground. Exercise requires student to identify, categories and represent the prevailing building types in our cities and develop their skills to draw building footprint and its three3D form that also abstracts architectural language along with it relationship to ground. Students are require to identify two buildings out of the none typologies, representing one from Indian context and one outside the Indian context. Buildings are represented through isometric view with the in scale figure ground diagram.

The study of building typology starts with the smaller unit focuses more on quality of living that is independent bungalow. It’s a zone where every city has their diversity presented. The major thing to observe in this typology is the percentage of edge porosity and the fanistrartion possibilities. Both the partially fanistrartion and open access houses have their benefits.

Residential Apar t m en t s Cities : Mumbai, Tokyo Countries : India, Japan

This residential typology focuses upon how the toady’s modern concept of living vertically implemented in the two densely packed neighborhoods in the world. The typology is incomplete without the intervention of podium or the layer of mixed use massing at the ground level. That makes the module it self feasible and flexibility to repeat.

Of f ice Buildings Cities : Mumbai, New York Countries : India, U.S.A.

The office building typology has diverse array of scales, depending on the site dimensions as well as the urban context of the any city. In case of cities like New York, the setbacks are absent and the building facades directly encloses the street envelop. There is a no proper definition of front and back facade of the building. In the Indian context there is a considerable level of setbacks, that makes such public building less interactive with street envelops. BUILDING TYPOLOGIES : ELEMENTS OF URBAN DESIGN CEPT UNIVERSITY

H otels Cities : Lukhnow, Denver Countries : India, U.S.A.

The hotel buildings are the unique in the overall urban form of the any city. In terms of scale and dimensions it differs from the rest of the others. The sheer Difference is in the scale and the facade language makes it different and unique from other ones. The size of the footprints also determines the holding capacity of the building.

Commercial Hos p it a ls Cities : Mumbai, San Francisco Countries : India, U.S.A.

Commercial hospital buildings are the second unique typology in the city’s urban form. It generally has simple fanistrartion patterns but the various proportion of heights makes them unique. Generally such typology of buildings are observed more in a liner footprint size because it accounts more possibility of accommodating wards and beds.

Learnings : Building Typology The study of building typology elaborates a point that distribution of such typologies plays a very crucial role in defining the fabric and urban form of the city. The whole above study can be concluded by the following three major learnings or inferences from therm : I. There has to be a proper attention towards the left over or the space in between the building. II. It is extremely important to understand how much important is the ground floor of the building to create interaction. III. Fanistrartion of the building also plays a major role depending upon the typology and level privacy requirement. BUILDING TYPOLOGIES : ELEMENTS OF URBAN DESIGN CEPT UNIVERSITY

Synthesis : Built Density

The synthesis week is design as a week of compilation in which the groups compile all the work that done till now on a specific topic. Built density is an attribute that can represent, how much built area is covered under the certain stretch or a block. The study focuses upon understanding the attributes and the variables of such block in which the built density is varying from 40% -80%. In which the various studied urban blocks are categorize in the cluster of four and then analyzed in terms of their average heights, built to open ratio and their built characters through 3D and two dimensional maps. The data is also being represented to statistical analysis on graph as well.

BUI L T DENSITY Its is the factor connected with the urban blocks, it largely talks about the building footprint sand its ratio compare to the block area.

Design of a Public Place - Filling up the Urban Void : Ahmadabad

The second module of the semester focuses upon the application of the all collected analysis and learnings of the moduel-1 that is more related to understanding the elements that makes the complete urban fabric of the any city. In this module the students are require to identify a problem or a project related to design of public place inside the any city of the choice. Here the mo-duel two focuses upon the sensitive issue of underutilized potential of the spaces beneath the flyover. One of the example is taken into the city of Ahmadabad to taste the selected approaches and design strategies as per the site analysis and interferences.

Flyovers act as a secondary transport link in the ring radial connectivity in the Ahmadabad city. In-spite of having in sufficient number last year AMC has proposed 35 new flyovers in the city. If we primarily focused towards the CBD area of the city, it has basically two typologies. One that goes parallel to Ashram road and one that goes perpendicular to it and meet river bridges. Surrounded by largely commercial built-forms and high density traffic lanes.

Is there a Real Need of Flyovers ? To cater to the rising high density traffics and increase in the number of vehicular congestion increases the load on the arterial roads. Delayering the traffic movements into different parts seems to be much preferable solution for the cities.

Underutilization of Spaces Each flyover has acres of underutilized spaces below them.

In the city there are 15 flyovers, due to the unplanned use of the underneath spaces the majority of the spaces are not utilized as per the desired usage. That is why almost 20-25 acers of underneath spaces are still underutilized. Many times traffic congestion and encroachment to the surrounding lanes are demonstrative of the situation and mess that has been created underneath the flyover. The constant increase in the traffic pressure increases the traffic congestion and decrease the quality of life around that area. That is why it is really important to de-layer the transport movements in terms of segregating the pedestrian, vehicular and bus movements. In many cases BRTS (Janmarg) act as a ray of hope to solve this situation. In which the designated lane for the public transport in a way solving the congestion problem. That is why it is important to utilize the underneath spaces to create important urban marker as well as establish an opportunity to delayer the movements.

Design Ideology The major emphasis is given in the proposal to connect and establish the continuous flow of pedestrian connectivity throughout the underneath stretch. For that the continuous lane of 2.0 meter attached to the fast moving traffic lane of 7.25 meters on both the side. In continuation to that at certain possible junctions safe and raised pedestrian cross overs are created by connecting them to the surrounding lane. Also the existing footpath widths are increased from insufficient width of 0.9 meters to 1.25 meters to establish a comfortable flow of pedestrian activity. A Way For ward

Potential location of implementation and project feasibility

Conclusion : A Futuristic Prototype The design will act as a futuristic prototype for the city. In which many of the old or the upcoming spaces beneath the flyovers can be design like this. The major point of view to consider is the each design will be different because the programmatic and spatial approaches will be derived from the neighborhood. That will give each a different identity. The future feasibility of the project can be seen as there is a proposal of 35 new flyovers under the tank and the construction of metro also opens up wide range of prospects about treating underneath spaces.

Learnings

Journey at a glance The studio was conducted with the formate of two modules one that gives understanding and second a chance of implementation . That combination was a key behind the successful learning curve. Also every outcome was culminated into a exhibition, hence the representative language of the urban design drawing was a paramount importance in the whole process. The first three exercises of the module one delayering the elements of the urban environment was helpful to create the clear understanding regarding its scale and proportion in city context. In continuation to that at the end four week quick design exercise in the module two was an invaluable experience. In which it was actually a exercise of testing some of the learnings and inferences on the real existing site.

In that also the in depth process of right from creating a conveying diagram to understanding and identifying the issue was a major learning curve. Still the derivation of all of it to make an create a cohesive and holistic urban design drawings and diagrams, that can convey the strong and provoking ideas to the communities and end users of the city.
