I have been studying Natural Juice Therapy for almost two decades now and I’m excited to announce that I’ve condensed everything I’ve learnt into an extremely substantial Juice Master Academy online course. With the launch of a new official website and controversial blog, Juice Master Jason Vale explains why he wants to start a debate about the NHS

OK, so I am a little late to the party, but better late than never! I have been asked for years if I would do blogs and vlogs, but always resisted due to time restraints. However, as the new Jason Vale official website (jasonvaleofficial.com) went live, I thought I’d include a blog section where people can keep up-to-date with my latest rants and opinions on what’s going on in the world of health. I will also be doing the odd vlog or two, when the mood or general outrage over something inspires me to do so. I have always been quite outspoken, especially on the subjects of health, fitness, nutrition and addiction, and I am more than aware (and fully appreciate) that I am not everyone’s cup of tea. However, in my blog I intend to really get stuff off my chest. It’s not always going to be pretty and many won’t always agree with what I am saying, but such is life and the freedom of speech. Having said that, I feel many will be pleased that I am bringing an alternative and, at times, controversial voice to the arena. There is a lot of talk surrounding the underfunding of the National Health Service (NHS). It is easy for most people to jump into anger mode at politicians and scream that they aren’t doing enough, and all that’s needed is more money. I fundamentally disagree with this opinion and believe that we all, not just politicians, need to do what we can to help the NHS. Ask not what the NHS can do for you, but what YOU can do for the NHS At a later date, I plan to take a long look at who is ultimately responsible for the ‘broken NHS’ and what we all need to do, as a collective, to try and fix it and make it work – as intended. I say ‘as intended’ because when the NHS was first made available, it was very clear what it was set up to do, who it was developed to help and what

treatment it could offer. Today, seemingly almost anything can be got on the NHS and I feel it’s our collective responsibility, along with the politicians, to start doing what we can to remove some of the burden on this wonderful institution. This starts with taking some responsibility for our own health, some responsibility for what we can and are willing to pay for outside of the NHS (if able) and, moreover, for recognising that some things simply shouldn’t be funded by it. We are in a situation where much-needed cancer drugs are refused by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the NHS due to expense, while at the same time people receive ‘luxury’ treatments, costing thousands of pounds, for free. I will go into what I view as ‘luxury’ treatments in another blog and yes, it will rustle a few feathers, but I think a huge paradigm shift is needed in how the NHS is run. We also need a massive re-evaluation of what should and should not be available on the NHS. The sheer scope of treatments has risen to include a plethora of things which clearly should be paid for by individuals themselves. Things which aren’t medical emergencies or genuine preventers of future disease (and trust me, there are plenty!). On top of this, we have 'big pharma' manipulating medical drug studies in order to flood the NHS ‘market’ for huge financial gain. Tamiflu is just one example, and I will talk further about how millions of pounds of NHS money was needlessly spent on this drug and many others. The NHS is perhaps the biggest ‘customer’ of all for 'big pharma' and if they can convince the right people why their drug is absolutely necessary, then BINGO! – they’ve hit the big government money jackpot. I hope this gives you a taste of what I wish my blog to be about. In the meantime, I hope you like my new, small and simple website and that you get involved with the blog and any debate which may (no, WILL) arise from it.

From soap star to Strictly contestant, Gemma Atkinson loves a challenge and a daily juice keeps her on track It’s Wednesday afternoon and Gemma Atkinson has just enough time to catch up with Juiced! magazine before she heads to her next appointment, even though she’s been on the go since 4am. It’s another busy day in a neverending, crazy schedule, but she isn’t one to complain. In fact complaining doesn’t figure at all in Gemma’s make-up, which brims with positivity, gratitude and a natural care for others.

It’s not that she’s not ambitious, and having joined the Strictly Come Dancing class of 2017, there’s plenty of drive to achieve more than she already has since her first role as Lisa Hunter in Channel 4’s Hollyoaks in 2009. As she teams up with a pro dancer for Strictly Come Dancing, she’s also busy in her role as presenter on the Gemma, Matt and Mike Show, the primetime breakfast slot on Manchester’s radio station, Key 103. It’s a leap from her screen role as Carly Hope in Emmerdale, and several thousand miles from I’m A Celebrity..., Hollywood films and theatre, including a West End run in Calendar Girls.

“I’m loving doing radio for now,” says Gemma. “It’s Manchester’s #1 radio show and I’ve known Matt and Mike (her co-presenters) for years, so it feels very comfortable. But going into Strictly, I’m going to be putting on my stilettos and frocks and trying to compete for that glitter ball. I never thought those words would come out of my mouth. “It’s a challenge. I think you should always push yourself out of your comfort zone with stuff, and this for me is completely out of my comfort zone. I just want to have fun with it, plus you get to learn a new skill, so I’m going to take the opportunity and run with it. My aim is not to go out first. I would

love to get to the final, absolutely. For me learning to dance itself is a milestone, so if I come away from the experience being able to say I can dance, then that itself is great.” So, with a gruelling three-month schedule of Strictly rehearsals and performances ahead, and having taken to headphones and microphone like a proverbial duck to water, is acting on the back burner for Gemma? “No definitely not,” she says emphatically. “If an opportunity comes along, you’ve got to grab it with both hands. I definitely felt the radio show gave me the chance to try something different, but I am 1,000 per cent not giving up on acting.

“On the surface, acting looks glamorous but it’s hard graft. I’m still working hard and am on the go from 4am, five days a week. I’m enjoying the experience of radio, but I love acting. “Since doing the radio show, I have a new routine – once we come off air and have our after-show meeting, I head to the gym, four times a week, for an hour. I can then jump on the train to London to meet my agent if I need to, or to meet up with friends, but I have to be in bed by 9.30pm so I can get up at 4am!”

Healthy passion

Whatever the challenge, Gemma tackles everything she does with bags of enthusiasm, and works hard to maintain the stamina a career in show business demands. Passionate about fitness and nutrition, Gemma is in great shape, boosted by a recent stay at Juicy Oasis – her third visit since it opened. “I love it,” she says. “The scenery is breathtaking and I have the chance to switch off and unwind. We never know how hectic life is until we stop. To not have to think about anything and to be able to relax is sheer bliss. “I love the yoga classes, walks and hikes at Juicy Oasis, and when you’re fuelling your body with such good nutrients, you start to feel amazing. It’s like giving yourself an MOT and I think you need to give your digestion a rest at least once a year. “I had juiced before I visited Juicy Oasis, but I didn’t really understand it properly. Now I juice every day, even on holiday, and take one to the radio show to have mid-morning, which keeps me going to lunchtime. “Juicy Oasis gets better and better and, having stayed when it was brand new, it’s been brilliant to see it flourish. Jason has worked so hard and the team are passionate about what they do. Lots of people I chat with are on their second or third visit, which I think is proof of the value of a stay.

“This time I visited with my mum and her husband, and they loved it too – they lost 10lbs each and thought it was fabulous, they’ll definitely be back.” Family and home life are important to Gemma, who is more than happy to switch her LBD for nights in. “I’m a home girl at heart,” she says. “I love going to my mum’s and sister’s and hanging out with her kids. I would like children at some point, perhaps the other side of 35, but I like my life at the moment. Glitzy events are hard work and while I have to go for work, it’s a hassle to figure out what to

Veggie Layered Lasagne Ingredients for the cheese sauce

boiling water.

Serves 2 Cashew nuts 100g or 2 large handfuls Filtered water 60ml/2fl oz Goat's cheese (soft) 100g/3.5oz Mustard 1 flat tsp Himalayan rock salt 1 pinch

Heat the oil over a medium to high heat, add the onion and garlic and cook for 5 minutes or until soft. Add the tomatoes, pepper, vinegar, quinoa, basil, cayenne pepper, salt and stock. Stir well, then reduce to a medium heat, cover with the lid and allow to cook for a further 5 minutes so the sauce thickens (stirring frequently).

Ingredients for the tomato sauce Red onion ½ medium Garlic 2 cloves Fresh tomatoes 6 medium Sun-dried tomatoes 150g/5oz Red pepper 1 medium Fresh basil 20g or 1 handful Vegetable stock cube 1 Boiling water 120ml/4fl oz Olive oil 1 tbsp Apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp Quinoa (or bulgur wheat) 40g/1.5oz Cayenne pepper 1 pinch Himalayan rock salt 1 generous pinch

Ingredients for the layers Courgettes 2 medium Olive oil 1 tbsp Ground black pepper 4 pinches

PREP

Preheat the oven to 220°C (450°F/ gas mark 7).

PREP for the cheese sauce

Put the cashew nuts in the container of a hand blender and blitz for 10–20 seconds until they turn into ‘flour’ (leave in the container).

PREP for the tomato sauce

Remove the ends, peel and finely dice the onion and garlic. Finely chop the fresh and sun-dried tomatoes. Remove the core and seeds from the red pepper and finely chop. Roughly chop the basil, discarding any hard stems. Dissolve the stock cube in the

Meanwhile... prepare the layers Remove the ends from the courgettes and cut lengthways into thin slices (about 0.5 cm thick). Place them in a dish and drizzle with the olive oil, turning so all are coated.

GRIDDLE

Heat a griddle or frying pan and cook the courgette strips over a high heat, turning regularly until they are cooked on both sides (you will need to do this in batches). If these are ready before the sauce, just allow to cool.

Meanwhile... make the cheese sauce

Add the filtered water, goat's cheese, mustard and salt to the cashew ‘flour’ in the hand-blender container and blitz for 10-20 seconds until it forms a smooth sauce.

Assemble

Place a layer of courgettes on the bottom of the baking dish (cut to size if needed). Next create a second layer using half of the tomato sauce, followed by a third layer using half of the cheese sauce. Repeat with the remaining ingredients and finish with the ground black pepper.

Cook

Pop in the oven and cook for 15 minutes or until the lasagne starts to brown.

Veggie bangers n mash with red onion gravy Ingredients for the bangers Serves 2 Almonds 60g/1 large handful Pumpkin seeds 40g/1 large handful Himalayan rock salt 2 pinches Ground black pepper 2 pinches Leek 1 small Garlic 2 cloves Mushrooms 4 medium Baking apple 1 small Olive oil 1 tbsp (+11/2tsp for tray) Dijon mustard 1 heaped tsp

Ingredients for the gravy Red onion ½ medium Fresh thyme 10g or 1 handful Vegetable stock cube 1 Boiling water 200ml/7fl oz Olive oil 1 tbsp Balsamic vinegar 1 tbsp Dijon mustard ½ tsp

Ingredients for the mash Sweet potatoes 3 medium Boiling water 1 litre/35fl oz Olive oil 1½ tablespoon Himalayan rock salt 1 pinch Ground black pepper 1 generous pinch

PREP the bangers

Place the almonds, pumpkin seeds, salt and pepper into the hand-blender container and blitz for 20 seconds until it turns into a fine ‘flour’. Scatter 1 level tbsp of the ‘flour’ onto a large chopping board. Remove the ends from the leek, peel the garlic and finely slice both. Dice the mushrooms into small pieces. Peel and remove the core from the apple and finely chop.

Prepare the gravy

Peel and chop the onion and thyme. Dissolve stock in 200ml of boiling water.

Prepare the mash

Peel the potatoes, chop into small chunks and place in a pan.

Make the gravy

Heat the olive oil over a medium to high heat, add the onion and cook for 5 minutes. Add the stock, thyme, vinegar and mustard, reduce to a medium heat and simmer for 15 minutes with the lid off. Then reduce to a very low heat and continue to simmer until needed.

Meanwhile... make the mash

Pour boiling water over the potatoes, bring to the boil and cook for 15 minutes or until soft. Drain the water, return the potatoes to the warm pan, add the oil, salt, pepper and mash. Replace the lid.

Meanwhile... create the bangers

Preheat grill to a high heat. Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the leeks, garlic, mushrooms and apple and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Then add the cooked ingredients to the ‘flour’ in the stickblender container along with the mustard and blitz for 10 seconds. Pop in the freezer for 15 minutes to firm. Divide mixture and roll into 6 fat sausages, place on a pre-floured chopping board and lightly coat. Place on an oiled baking tray under the grill and cook for 6-8 minutes, turning part way through.

SERVE

Spoon the mash onto the plate, top with the sausages and finish with the lovely gravy.

I have always loved bangers and mash, but since leaving ‘mystery food’ behind (what’s in the average meat sausage? Exactly, it’s a mystery!) I had to find another way of getting the wonderful classic tastes of this dish. Now making a good veggie sausage isn’t as easy as it may appear and it took me a while to get this right. What I will say is, if making your own veggie sausages seems like a little too much faff for you, feel free to go and grab some good ready–made ones. Whatever route you go, a good veggie sausage on a bed of sweet potato mash with some red onion gravy is one classic you won’t want to miss.

This is a true British classic; it’s one of those extremely comforting dishes which immediately transport you back to childhood and makes you want to curl up on the sofa with a good book.

No sheep shepherd s pie! Ingredients

15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serves 2 Red onion ½ medium Garlic 2 cloves Sweet potatoes 3 medium Tomatoes 6 medium Mushrooms 4 medium Leek 1 Black-eyed beans 120g/4oz or ½ tin Olive oil 2 tbsps Apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp Ground cumin 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1 heaped tsp Boiling water 1 litre/35fl oz Himalayan rock salt 1 pinch Ground black pepper 1 generous pinch Vegetable stock cube 1

MEANWHILE...

PREP

Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F/ gas mark 6). Remove the ends and skin from the onion, garlic and potatoes and dice the ingredients. Chop the tomatoes and mushrooms into small cubes. Remove the end from the leek and slice thinly. Drain and rinse the beans.

COOK

Pour half the olive oil into a large pan and warm over a medium to high heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the tomatoes, mushrooms, beans, vinegar, cumin and mustard, cover with a lid, reduce to a medium heat and cook for

Place the potatoes in a pan, cover with the boiling water and boil for 15 minutes until soft. Whilst the potatoes are cooking, heat the remaining olive oil in a frying pan and cook the leeks for 3 minutes until it softens and starts to brown.

MAKE THE MASH

Once the potatoes are cooked, drain away the water, return the potatoes to the warm pan, add the salt and pepper and mash. Then add the cooked leek, gently combine and replace the lid.

THICKEN

Once the vegetables have cooked for 15 minutes they will have released their juices. At this point add the stock cube, stir well to ensure it is totally dissolved and continue to cook for a further 5 minutes with the lid off using a stickblender pulse for just 6 seconds, so that some of the sauce is blended to create a thicker sauce, but the majority is still in its original form. If you don’t have a stick blender, you can blend 4 tbsps in a regular blender and then return to the pan and mix well.

CREATE

Pour the filling into an ovenproof dish, cover with the mash and leek topping and pop in the oven for 15 minutes to brown.

Meet two inspiring readers whose lives have been transformed by the power of juice When Juiced! magazine reader Danielle Drayton won a trip for two to Juicy Mountain, Jason’s Turkish retreat, in our launch issue, she had no idea it would be a life-changing experience. But the power of juice often surprises people. Danielle and her husband Rhys first heard Juice Master Jason Vale when he spoke at a seminar alongside personal-

development maestro Tony Robbins. Inspired by Jason’s talk, the couple immediately went home and watched Super Juice Me!, his groundbreaking documentary. Having suffered from ulcerative colitis for ten years, Danielle knew she had to start to juice. Embarking upon a seven-day plan, boosted by cabbage shots, the

couple were quickly hooked on this amazing source of liquid nutrition. Danielle’s colitis was soon in remission and amazingly her prescription medication was reduced from 12 to one tablet per day, and she ceased to need anti-inflammatory injections for her condition.

We were determined to beat this and, although it was really hard, we shaved 11 minutes off our time on our second attempt, which was a huge achievement. “We enjoyed a fantastic juice workshop and experienced delicious real fresh lemonade made by the team, and both Rhys and I started to crave juices – we couldn’t believe that we didn’t feel hungry at all. In fact our first meal before we left Göcek was an avocado salad, and we couldn’t finish it! “At the retreat we also got to try

meditation, which I was a bit nervous about as I didn’t know how to and thought I wouldn’t be any good, but it turns out no one is really amazing at it! Thoughts will always come into your head, but it’s about recognising this and refocusing on your breathing. “Juicy Mountain is a truly magical, spiritual place and I was able to empty my mind, forget about the world back home, focus and relax. One day a member of the team read a poem at the ‘Limestone Mountain’, which made me cry – I felt so moved and lucky to experience such a special moment.

Make a wish

“Experiencing a holiday where you interact with other people so much was new to us, and one we definitely want to repeat. On the last day we all made a wish on the ledge, overlooking the incredible view from the mountain, and mine was to return to Juicy Mountain every year from now on. “Back in the UK, I came home to find my clothes looser and we had both lost eight pounds over the week. I felt stronger and leaner and had so much energy and vitality. We have continued to eat clean and juice every day, and we have no intention of stopping!” ■

MY JUICE JOURNEY

Procrastination is one of the biggest obstacles to having the life we want, and for Jenny Thomas the decision to finally listen to Jason Vale’s Stop Smoking in 2 Hours app was the catalyst for change. Having downloaded the app six months previously, Jenny was desperate to quit the habit and in February 2014 finally committed a mere 120 minutes to breaking her addiction for good.

“Jason’s app was the catalyst for change and I would never have gone to Juicy Oasis without it” “It only took a couple of hours and, like so many things, once I’d done it I couldn’t believe how easy it was,” says Jenny. “That was it, I had jumped on my path to freedom. “A friend suggested a visit to Juicy Oasis and I decided to book a stay. The first few days, my body and mind went into a state of shock. Apart from netball, I hadn’t done any real exercise in years and my lungs were those of a 30-40-a-day smoker, so I found the exercise pretty tough but also really good fun and it helped me work out some of my frustrations. Cucurb-it! Vegetables from the squash family such as sweet butternut and fleshy courgette are so versatile. Courgette’s mellow taste makes it great for juicing and the meaty texture of both courgette and butternut makes them perfect candidates for spiralising or adding substance to main dishes too. This refreshing juice will take you right back to summer with an uplifting hit of ginger to awaken the senses. Courgettes are a good source of potassium, manganese, magnesium, vitamins A, C and K and folate.

Flower power Cauliflower is now at its best and makes a perfect substitute for rice or couscous. Perhaps because the most commonly recognised variety is the white cauliflower, it is wrongly judged to be less nutrient-rich than greener members of the brassicaceae family such as broccoli and cabbage, although research tells us otherwise. Sulfur-containing glucosinolates found in the white vegetable are believed to support the digestive, immune and cardiovascular systems. On a chilly autumn evening, this ‘oh so good for you’ curry will satisfy and soothe when only a hearty bowl will hit the spot. Rich in anti-inflammatory nutrients including vitamin K, this knobbly vegetable is a star ‘super food’.

Cut the lime in half. Put the coconut oil in a wok or large frying pan and place over a medium heat. Add the butternut squash and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the onion, chilli and garlic and cook for 10 minutes. Add the coconut milk and turmeric and squeeze the lime into the pan. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove the leaves from the cauliflower and cut into quarters. Place in a processor and pulse until it is broken down and resembles cooked rice. Alternatively, using the large holes, grate the cauliflower. Put the olive oil in a pan over medium heat, add the cauliflower, salt and pepper and cook for 5 minutes stirring frequently. A healthier and more interesting twist to the starchy white potato mash, this orange version will really tickle your tastebuds.

Super Recipe: Carrot Mash with Salted Pumpkin Seeds & Balsamic Vinegar Carrots 6 large Boiling water 400ml/14fl oz Pumpkin seeds 1 tbsp

Himalayan rock salt 1 generous pinch Balsamic vinegar 2 tbsps

Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F/gas mark 4). Peel and chop carrots into small chunks. Place in a pan, cover with boiling water and cook over a medium-high heat for 10 minutes, until soft. Place the pumpkin seeds and salt on a tray in the oven for 5 minutes and then remove. Drain the carrots, return to the pan and pat with kitchen roll to remove excess water. Add half the balsamic vinegar and mash using a hand blender or food processor until smooth. Have you ever started a new juice plan only to hear the critics – often our nearest and dearest – circle with doubts and negativity? It’s not that they want to put us off better nutrition, but the ‘risk’ is that we could eat too many fruit and vegetables. Here’s how the scenarios typically go, and here’s why they are nonsensical arguments against the unarguable benefits of juicing.

Have you checked with your GP that it’s ok to juice for a week? This makes no sense. I have never heard of anyone who has said to their friends, 'So, I have decided to go to Vegas for a week, get absolutely s**t faced, eat a lot of crap, do no exercise and be out every night until late,' to be met with a reply of, 'I think you should ask your GP if it’s safe to do so.' Yet the moment you tell them you’re having green juices – BOOM! 'Oh, I don’t think that’s a good idea, have you checked with your doctor?' How have we reached this stage? We are experiencing the worst obesity and lifestyle illness epidemic in history. One which no medical or dietetic person would dispute would be massively improved if we consumed more fruits and vegetables. A major study into the effect of fruits and vegetables on disease was published by Imperial College London in 2017. It calculated that if we increased our intake of fruits and vegetables to ten portions a day, it could prevent 7.8 million premature deaths a year. It also identified specific fruits and vegetables which reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. I can’t understand why anyone, especially the medical profession, would discourage anything which gets more fruits and vegetables into a person. Yet the government guideline states:

Juicing can only ever count as one portion of fruit or vegetable The National Health Service's (NHS) website states, at the time of writing: Do juices and smoothies count

towards my five-a-day? Unsweetened 100 per cent fruit juice, vegetable juice and smoothies can only ever count as a maximum of one portion of your five-a-day. For example, if you have two glasses of fruit juice and a smoothie in one day, that still only counts as one portion. Your combined total of drinks from fruit juice, vegetable juice and smoothies should not be more than 150ml a day – which is a small glass. For example, if you have 150ml of orange juice and 150ml of smoothie in one day, you'll have exceeded the recommendation by 150ml. Future generations will look back at this stage in human development and be unable to figure out how this advice ever appeared on a government advice website. A portion is 80g or 3oz – in real terms, a small banana, pear, three heaped tablespoons of peas or a large handful of spinach. How is it possible that if I place these into a blender and make a smoothie that I have reduced the four portions to one portion?! This is a magic trick worthy of a David Copperfield show. In fact it’s even more crazy in the case of blending (or smoothie making) as the fruit/vegetable is whole, so how, if you put say five portions into a smoothie, does it turn into one because you’ve blended it? Does that mean if you chew your whole fruits and vegetables when eating them, they also only count as one portion no matter how many you eat? After all, you have chewed them – which is all the blender did!

This argument doesn’t stand up when talking about juicing either. Yes, a juicer extracts the insoluble fibre from fruits and vegetables but this does not feed the body – it cannot penetrate the intestinal wall, so how can you lose nutrition you wouldn’t have received in the first place? All freshly extracted juices contain pectin, a soluble fibre, so to say juices have no fibre is false. I would go further and argue that in freshly extracted juice form, the nutrition is more bio-available – meaning more nutrition gets to where it’s needed.

If you have ten portions of fruits and vegetables in juice or blend form, it does count as your five-aday I don’t care if any qualified dietician or medical practitioner says otherwise. How can you have a study where Dr. Dagfinn Aune, one of the researchers, writes: 'Fruit and vegetables have been shown to reduce cholesterol levels and blood pressure and boost the health of our blood vessels and immune system. This may be due to the complex network of nutrients they hold. For instance, they contain many antioxidants, which may reduce DNA damage and lead to a reduction in cancer risk,' yet we still have government guidelines which discourage a method for getting more of the good stuff in your body? If you're a happy camper eating ten portions of fruits and vegetables daily in a wide spectrum of colours, feel free to skip the juicing and blending and munch away. Equally, if you know that juicing and blending are the only ways to achieve this, ignore the naysayers of every description (including the ‘qualified’ ones) and do so to your heart’s content. I know I will. ■

the sport and are (whatever their shape or size) athletes in their own right. She rejects the idea that there is one type of runner, encouraging anyone to get out there and have a go. BEFORE YOU START Running is a relatively inexpensive sport, but if there is one thing worth investing in it’s proper footwear. Specialist running shops will assess your style on a treadmill and match you with a suitable shoe. SET A GOAL Having something to aim for is a brilliant way to stay motivated and give you a reason to improve. Start with a 5k fun run where there isn’t the pressure of a formal race, but enough of a challenge to make you train – most will reward you with a shiny new medal for your efforts. GET SUPPORT A running buddy can be great motivation and help keep you focused as you spur each other on. If you don’t have anyone to run with, find a local club that suits your needs – most will have sessions designed for new runners. If you would prefer to run alone, download an app such as C25K to use as your virtual coach. BUILD UP SLOWLY The key thing to remember is that it’s not a race. Well, it might be one day but for now you’re training your body to a new way of working. Always take time to warm up and down properly – it’s the most crucial part of your run.

hy on earth are you reading this article? Sit with this for a few minutes… May I share with you a yogic secret: the universe, which asks nothing of you, through yoga does require one action from you. That is you be absolutely honest with yourself. Be honest about your feelings and fears, your actions and intentions, the whole lot. Mind will arise there, mind will impose the vision, the description, the thought of how things should be. Mind then correlates the gap between what is and how things should be. From this festering ground of discontent arises the ‘ambitious one’. This is the one who plots all you have to do to set your world to rights. Have you noticed how demanding and relentless this one is? It smiles brightly and promises much, such as how great life will be when, and only when, yet there is much to be done for this ‘only when’ to be arrived at. Have you noticed that you do not ever arrive? You do not see the ‘ambitious one’ clearly, because you are unwittingly mesmerised by it and collapse into assuming it as your identity.

Enquire within

Yoga shows the way and it does not take much to step back from it and rest as the essence of being. From this non-involved, wide-open perspective it is easy to see how aggressive and controlling the ‘ambitious one’ is. It might even be described as sinister and vicious. Often, it will not let you rest. You do not see this because you first allow yourself to be seduced by it and you seem to become it. It knows no true rest and it knows no peace.

Yes, the ‘ambitious one’ does throw you crumbs along your path. It will humour you with achievements, success, status. It may even fit you into a Little Black Dress. As spiritual pretence, it may create the illusion that you are ‘living in the moment’, or convince you that you are ascending consciousness. It will conjure up all kinds of false stories to appease you, yet most certainly such satisfaction will be short-lived. Even if you have the wherewithal to feel or say ‘thank you’ soon you will become dissatisfied. Therein begins the process of the rug being pulled under your feet. Saying ‘thank you’ may have helped fly the magic carpet of desire a little longer, but magic carpets cannot fly on autopilot.

Joy to the world

It is easy to be thankful for the pleasant things in life, yet are you on detox? In your decision to detox, have you noted certain things you do not want in your life? Is it 7lbs of excess weight, a ‘bad back’, sluggish digestion, a stressed mind or darkness within? Is there that within you for which you are not thankful, that you must clear before you are satisfied? May I suggest as an experiment that you practise gratitude for everything in life. Who is that one within you which has the wisdom, courage and equanimity to see everything as it is and without consequence, refrain from defining things as good, bad, beautiful, ugly or indifferent? Discover this and absolute peace, contentment and tranquility are endlessly and effortlessly available to you. Simply in just being, you will exude a sense of gratitude, joy and love for life. I am not suggesting becoming an inert spiritual vegetable; being around ‘juicy people’ is not a safe place for vegetables to be.

No pretence

In fact this contented one is very useful and effective at getting done that which needs to be done. Just as important, it is also clear about what does not need doing. In truth it has no vested interest at all. It is secure in and as itself and does not seek recognition for its achievements. Karma Yoga suggests that action in ‘doing without desire for the fruits of the action’ lets you follow a path towards liberation, possibly enlightenment. It is natural to always be demanding. Personality as the ‘mini-me’ is very calculating, constantly choosing where to invest energy. With that comes the anxious state of needing return on investment. Can you observe such tendencies in your life? Gratitude is useful; in the moment of being gracious, you practise awareness. This may help realise the innate aware state. Awakening this is one of the most natural, restful and profound yoga paths. Reverting to my question: Why on earth are you reading this article? In doing so is the vibration (Sankalpa) of your being resonating as the fullness of life, joyousness and contentment. The Sanscrit word Santosha, meaning contentment, is one of the early pillars upon which yoga practice is founded. Discover this. I have not referred to ingratitude or being ungrateful. Well, the endless sky is the space of stardust, from which every atom of you has been birthed. Infinity is your Cosmic Mother. And what does a mother have in store for an ungrateful child? Love, yet likely fewer presents. If it is presents you desire, you can try to play the game of gratitude. The Cosmic Mother knows what is going on. We cannot fool her. As Cat Stevens says, ‘There is no need to pretend!’ ■

You’ll see things like wholemeal pitta breads, German rye bread, fresh salmon, salad leaves, rocket, sunblush tomatoes, rice, quinoa, buckwheat, feta cheese and crackers of some kind. You might find the odd Gü dessert or a block of cheese – we are all human after all!

The original Turbo Charge Smoothie. All of the juice pioneers I read never introduced avocado into their meal replacements and I wondered why. It seemed they were into juicing and only juicing, whereas I am a big believer in juicing and blending. Katie Price also made this smoothie ‘famous’ over a decade ago when she first did my 7lbs in 7 Days Juice Diet. It is my ‘go to’ main green blend and it just has the perfect balance of nutrition whilst being slightly sweet and creamy, with an earthy edge!

YOU’VE HAD SOME AMAZING ACHIEVEMENTS OVER THE YEARS, BUT WHICH ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF, AND WHY? There are many so it’s genuinely hard to choose. I’d have to say the building of Juicy Oasis. This was a mammoth undertaking, especially with no experience in hotels, building or having the money to actually do the project. It was the hardest project, which made it the most rewarding. However, by the time some read this article, there may well have been another goal fulfilled which usurps this one.


Q&A

IF YOU CAN’T GET TO A GYM, HOW DO YOU WORK EXERCISE INTO YOUR DAY? I am extremely lucky. I have organised my life so that I always have access to some way of doing exercise. I am currently into spinning and have a really good Stages bike at home, as well as having a dome full of them at Juicy Oasis in Portugal (my second home). When I’m not spinning, and when my hamstring now allows, you’ll find me bouncing on a mini trampoline. I also love sports of all kinds, especially football, volleyball and tennis, which I get to play when at the retreat.

TELL US A SECRET ABOUT YOURSELF. Then it wouldn’t be a secret, so by definition I can’t really answer that.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TASTE/ FLAVOUR? That’s like asking your fave film, it all depends on mood. I think I’m the same as most people, I like sweet, savoury and earthy, it just all depends on the moment.

DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO ENJOY A JUICE WITH? Almost impossible to answer. There are many people I’d like to do dinner with, I'm unsure if they’d all want to have a fresh juice though! Elvis, clearly, the true king of rock 'n’ roll, would be super cool to share a juice with, but I think he’d have preferred something slightly stronger. I’d also love to share a juice and kick a ball with David Beckham, Robbie Williams, James Corden and Rod Stewart.

IF YOU COULD ONLY TAKE ONE GADGET ON YOUR DESERT ISLAND, WHICH WOULD IT BE AND WHY? Well, oddly, I wouldn’t take a juicer (no electricity may be an issue!) so I think it would have to be a jet ski, which makes far more sense.

TECH-FAN OR TECHNOPHOBE? WHAT HI-TECH ITEM COULD YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT? Like most people I couldn’t live without my phone. I say phone, what I mean is my portable mini computer. I travel a great deal and my phone and mini MacBook are my must-haves at all times. I’m always writing, dealing with emails or replying to social media questions/posts, so these are two amazing pieces of tech which I’d be lost without.

WHICH REALITY TV SHOW WOULD YOU LOVE TO APPEAR ON? I was asked to be on Celebrity Big Brother once, but I’d rather pluck my nasal hairs with a fish fork! I’d be useless on I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! because I’d be cool with just having the rice and beans they provide, so I’d definitely have to skip all the trials. I’d have to think hard if I were ever offered Strictly Come Dancing. I used to breakdance as a teenager, but that’s hardly Latin ballroom! I’m also unsure if I’d ever have the time but, of all the reality shows, that’s probably the only one I’d even think about doing.
